Who are These People?

There are 3 ways visitors can come into your program/department:

• Visiting Resident • Visiting Medical Student • Observer/Shadower

• You have to know what type of visitor they are so you know what set of paperwork to do.

• It is up to your department to accept a visitor or not (except UofU medical students)

Visiting Residents • Under the authority of the SOM GME Office

(see GME policy 7.1)

• Must be in an ACGME-accredited program • If not, go immediately to Observer/Shadower instructions

• Forms (both on GME website): • Visiting Resident Training Agreement • Visiting Housestaff Packet (includes liability

insurance either from home program or the resident) • If there is a problem with the resident getting this, go

immediately to Observer/Shadower instructions

Visiting Medical Students • Under the Authority of the SOM Student Affairs

Office • Must be meet eligibility requirements (student

affairs handles this) • There are a “course director” (faculty) and “course

coordinator” (admin) for each course, may or may not be you and you program director

• You must communicate with the student (where to go on their first day, etc.)

• The only paperwork is the evaluation

Visiting Observer/Shadowder • Observer and Shadower are interchangeable

terms • Under the authority of the University

Information Security and Privacy Office • There is a GME Policy about this (7.2) • What they can do is more restrictive than

residents and medical students • Anyone can accept an observer, not just the

program director

Workforce Member • University of Utah Health Sciences Center

Confidentiality and Information Security Agreement • Must also do University on-line HIPAA training and

submit certification with these two forms
