VORTEC™ ENGINES The Vortec™ engines that power every Sierra 1500 are given that name for good reason. They feature “vortex technology” that swirls and tumbles the incoming air and fuel for optimum power and response. Vortec™ V6 and V8 cylinder heads feature kidney shaped valve placement that facilitates a centrally located, long-life spark plug to help promote better combustion. This eliminates the need for 2 spark plugs and double the ignition system, the way some competitors do.

hyBRID TwO-MODE ELECTRONICALLy VARIABLE TRANSMISSION To conserve fuel at low speeds or under light loads, this transmission has two integral electronic motors that engage to give you smooth, effortless power. There’s no debate – fuel efficiency is a top priority these days. Just because you need the capability of a full-size pickup doesn’t change that reality. In fact, it makes fuel efficiency even more critical. Sierra 1500 models incorporate a series of technologies that enhance fuel efficiency. Engine management systems like Active Fuel Management® and Variable Valve Timing (VVT) help the 315 horsepower 5.3-litre Vortec™ V8-powered Sierra XFE achieve 13.7 L/100 km city and 9.1 L/100 km highway ratings. That’s significantly better than the comparable Ford F-150 V8-powered pickup.* The technological breakthrough in the Sierra lineup continues to be Sierra Hybrid, with the only hybrid powertrain technology available in the full-size pickup class. Its innovative Two-Mode Hybrid System includes a 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS), an Electronically Variable Transmission (EVT) and a regenerative braking system that together work in conjunction with the 332 horsepower Vortec™ V8 with Active Fuel Management®. The system can run on gasoline power alone, electric power alone, or a combination of the two. The result: Sierra Hybrid has a rating of 10.1 L/100 km city – less than the Honda Accord V6 and the Ford Fusion V6.** That’s a remarkable achievement for a truck capable of carrying a payload of up to 693 kg (1527 lb.) and a maximum trailering capacity of 2767 kg (6100 lb.). ENGINE TECHNOLOGIES: HYBRID TECHNOLOGIES:

VARIABLE VALVE TIMING (VVT) VVT monitors and adjusts engine valve open and close timing for near-peak levels of torque across the entire range of engine speeds. This not only provides added responsiveness in low-speed driving and while passing or trailering – it also optimizes fuel efficiency.

300-VOLT NIMh BATTERy PACk Nickel-Metal Hydride battery pack can store a lot of energy in a small space. In fact, Sierra Hybrid’s 300-volt battery pack is strong enough to propel the truck for significant distance on electric power alone, yet it ’s small enough to fit under the rear seat.

ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT® This technology seamlessly deactivates or reactivates four of the engine’s eight cylinders. That means when Sierra is hauling a light load or cruising on the highway, it can operate on just four cylinders. When more power is required for passing, or when carrying a heavier load, Active Fuel Management® draws upon the power of all eight cylinders. Active Fuel Management® is included in the VortecTM 5.3L and 6.0L V8 engines.

REGENERATIVE BRAkING SySTEM During normal deceleration, regenerative braking uses the motors in the hybrid transmission as generators to slow the vehicle by applying electrical resistance rather than using brake friction. At the same time, the motors are capturing that energy as electricity and storing it in the 300-volt battery pack, making electric power available for the next acceleration cycle.

There’s a fundamental difference between a vehicle that can be adapted to handle the specific demands of trailering and one that’s actually engineered from the ground up with the rigours of towing in mind. Sierra is such a vehicle. A list of its standard trailering features includes: trailer sway control that helps keep your truck and trailer heading in the proper direction and a Tow/Haul mode in the six-speed automatic transmission that reduces shifting to maintain power and torque. You can take Sierra’s towing abilities to the next level with the available MAX Trailering Package. It ups the ante with a 403 horsepower 6.2L VortecTM V8, as well as trailer-friendly features like a heavy-duty 241 mm (9.5 in.) ring gear in the rear differential, heavy-duty external engine oil and transmission oil cooling systems, an Eaton® automatic locking rear differential and a weight-distributing hitch. The result is a towing capacity of up to 4853 kg (10,700 lb.). Now that’s a truck built for towing.

1 AUTOMATIC LOCkING REAR DIFFERENTIAL Sierra is the only full-size pickup to offer an industry-leading Eaton® automatic locking rear differential. When one rear wheel starts to rotate approximately 100 rpm faster than the other, the differential automatically locks up and the two wheels rotate at the same speed to help you make the most of the available grip.

2 TAP-UP/TAP-DOwN DRIVER ShIFT CONTROL While all 2013 Sierra 1500 models come with an automatic transmission with a Tow/Haul mode, those equipped with the VortecTM 5.3L and 6.2L V8 engines also receive tap-up/ tap-down Driver Shift Control.


4 FRONT CRUSh ZONE In a serious frontal impact, the front sections of Sierra 1500’s hydroformed frame rails are designed to crumple in a controlled fashion to help dissipate crash energy before it reaches the passenger compartment.

5 DUAL-STAGE FRONTAL AIRBAGS† To help reduce your risk of injury, Sierra 1500’s airbags adjust their force of deployment based on the severity of the impact. In addition, sensors in the front-passenger seat measure the weight of the seat’s occupant and disable the front airbag automatically if it detects a child or a smaller adult.

6 SIDE-IMPACT hEAD CURTAIN AIRBAGS† In certain side impacts and rollover situations, the head curtain side-impact airbags unfurl from the roof rail and act like a protective curtain for the occupants of the outboard seats in both rows.

7 SEAT-MOUNTED SIDE-IMPACT AIRBAGS†

Driver and right front-passenger seats are fitted with seat-mounted side-impact airbags for additional thorax and pelvic protection.

hIGh-STRENGTh FRAME RAILS The Sierra 1500 frame features extremely strong, fully boxed hydroformed front frame components. The middle sections of the frame are also made of strong boxed sections, to provide strength where it’s needed most to handle heavy loads. The rails taper at the rear to reduce unnecessary weight.

REDUCED MAINTENANCE All Sierra 1500 engines feature extended life accessory drive belts, extended life coolant and extended life spark plugs to help reduce your overall cost of ownership.

TRACTION CONTROL SySTEM To make the most of available traction on many road surfaces, traction control measures and compares the speed of the truck’s wheels. If it senses one or more wheels starting to spin, such as on a slippery surface, the system applies individual brakes and manages engine power to slow the wheel down and maintain traction so you can move forward with greater control.

AUTOTRACTM 4X4 In addition to the usual 2HI, 4HI, 4LO and neutral operating modes, Sierra SLE and SLT’s AutotracTM 4x4 drivetrain includes an ‘Auto’ setting. When engaged, the system constantly monitors for wheelspin and automatically adjusts torque distribution to the front and rear wheels as the situation requires.

DRIVER INFORMATION CENTRE The Driver Information Centre (DIC) monitors a wide range of functions like transmission coolant temperature, engine oil life and tire pressure. It also features an exterior temperature readout and an 8-point compass display on all models, except WT.

TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SySTEM Any time your Sierra is riding on an under inflated tire, the standard tire pressure monitoring system will deliver an alert via the Driver Information Centre. Benefits include improved fuel efficiency and longer tire life.

GM OIL LIFE MONITORING SySTEM This system automatically assesses your engine oil condition and alerts you when a change is required. The benefits can include reduced oil change frequency, which cuts down service requirements and helps minimize your consumption of non-renewable resources and cost of ownership.

hILL hOLD ASSISTTo help keep you from rolling backwards when moving off from a stop on steep grades, Sierra’s standard hill hold assist feature will keep applying the brakes for 1.5 seconds after you release the pedal to give you time to move your foot to the accelerator.
