2013 Fiery Foods & BBQ Show

Inspired by a tabletop display of Old El Paso products I saw at the New Mexico Chile Conference back in 1988, Mary Jane and I decided to launch this show despite the fact that our main shows at the time in-volved customized cars, trucks, and motorcycles. When we counted the money left after paying all the bills for that first show, we discovered that we had made about a hundred dollars, and I remember thinking, “Okay, we’ve got something here.”

Twenty-five years later, and looking at the 420 show photos we scanned to make the television commercial, memories came flooding back to me, and almost all of them were good. Sure, we’ve had the oc-casional fistfights, petty thefts, exhibitor disputes, and minor illnesses, but those are far overshadowed by some astounding success stories from our exhibitors. Consider Garden Fresh Salsa, still with us after becoming the largest fresh salsa company in the world. Consider the huge accomplishments of Dave’s Gourmet and Blair Lazar’s superhot enterprises. Of course, our show wasn’t totally respon-sible for all the good fortunes of our exhibitors—but we were there, year after year, always giving confidence to the the new companies entering the industry.

At the first show, the habanero chile—the first superhot pepper—was introduced, and now we have the Scorpion—with more than more than three times the heat. At the first show, our general public at-tendance was about 500. Last year we set a record with attendance of 17,000. At the first show, Chuck Evans of Montezuma Brand exhibited with us. This year, he’s back!

It’s been quite a run over the years, and we give a big round of thanks to everyone who’s helped the show to prosper: the exhibitors, the at-tendees, the general public, the venues (particularly the Albuquerque Convention Center and Sandia Resort and Casino), Disco Display House, who decorated my first show in Albuquerque in 1976 and has been with us since then, Wayne Scheiner and Company, who have handled our show advertising over the years, and the public relations companies Shiroma Southwest and The Garrity Group. It seems silly to say, “Thanks, we couldn’t have done it without you,” but it’s true, we couldn’t. So a big thanks to everyone.

2013 Scovie Winners Report

By Emily DeWitt-Cisneros

It was another great year for the Scovies, with 805 entries, topping last year’s 792 for the all-time record. The number of companies par-ticipating was 133, of which 93 won at least one award, and 40 did not place. Congratulations to Lusty Monk Mustard, of Albuquerque, New Mexico for claiming top honors as the Grand Prize Winner in the Tasting Division. Jungle Heat Sauces and Jellies of Ontario, Canada was the Grand Prize Winner in the Marketing and Advertising Divi-sion. These two winners will each receive a Disc-It outdoor cooker. In seventeen years of Scovie contests, this is only the second time a New Mexico company has won Grand Prize—the last one was Chile Jam-min’ Stuff.

The big winners were Sean’s Booyah! with 34 awards and Garden Fresh Salsa with 21 awards. Lusty Monk Mustard had five awards, including the Grand Prize in the Tasting Division; Jungle Heat had 13 awards, including their Grand Prize. Jimmy Luv’s Bloody Mary Mix had four First Place awards—all were wins in the Beverage catego-ries.

About Lusty Monk from their website, www.lustymonk.com:

Lusty Monk Mustards are fresh-ground, hand-crafted, and full of flavor and fire. Lusty Monk is a family-owned, quality-conscious com-pany, devoted to the idea that condiments should never be boring. We lovingly craft the mustard in small batches, and we encourage our brethren to slow down and savor each bite.

In medieval Europe, there was a widespread belief that mustard was an aphrodisiac. As a result, some monks were forbidden to eat mus-tard, lest they fall prey to carnal desires. Other monasteries embraced mustard making and turned it into an art form. We salute these “lusty monks,” and in that grand tradition, we handcraft our mustard in small batches, with all-natural ingredients that would make our monastic predecessors proud.

Grab your own jar of Lusty Monk Mustard at booth #316 & 318!

About Jungle Heat Sauces from their website, www.jungleheatimports.com:

Years ago a crazy Canadian couple were looking for a simpler way of life, so they boarded a plane and headed for Costa Rica. They decided that the tranquility of Ojochal, a small village nestled deep in the jungle two km off the Pacific coast, was the perfect spot. They quickly learned that living in the middle of the jungle comes with a huge price tag—not only the countless challenges adjusting to their loca-tion. It was also a huge adjustment to the isolation, missing family and friends. It takes time to find your new comfort zone. Then there was the language barrier...the language was Spanish, and they knew none. What a way to learn really fast! In spite of all the obstacles, they began running a small soda fountain. Cooking was their passion, delicious comfort food their specialty. Serving with a big smile and a laugh or two came naturally for the crazy couple. Ron and Adie’s quickly became a favorite hangout.

In the quest to make sure their food was the best it could be, they started creating new sauces. The lack of resources added that pinch of limitation. Cooking over an open fire added that dash of challenge to every batch.

Churning out batch after batch, then trying new recipes on the un-suspecting was always great fun. When friends began asking to take home Ron’s Hot Sauce in pop bottles, and when the villagers began to save old salsa jars for them, Ron Savoie and Adrienne Kenney knew they had a winner.

Visit their website and try Jungle Heat Sauces for yourself!

The 2013 Scovie Awards CompetitionCongratulations to This Year’s Grand Prize Winners:

Lusty Monk Mustard and Jungle Heat Sauces & Jellies!

Scovie Grand Prize Winners Receive a Disc-It Portable Outdoor Cooker. Check out the amazing Disc-It and taste some great food at Booth #107, 109 & 111.
