Thousands of butterflies in Kuwait They were everywhere...

Hello Michael, Thanks for the latest edition of EEK - I have yet to read it. However, I thought I'd respond to your comment about the butterflies [we wrote about the thousands we saw out in Kuwait City, Ed.]. I don't know the type but I have seen this phenomenon before - it seems to happen in cycles although I can't quite remember the last time it was the turn of the butterflies. In the past (I've lived in and out of Kuwait since the 1980s) I have also seen swarms of ladybirds and locusts, not, I hasten to add, in the same year! I particularly remember the locusts because I was out on a field trip with a class of children at the time. The ladybirds, like the butterflies, are delightful I'm afraid I can't say the same for the locusts! Interestingly enough, I was watching OSN news yesterday and heard that the east coast of USA is preparing for an onslaught of cicadas which only come out every 17 years - there will be billions of them and, apparently, the noise level will be equal to a rock concert! I guess we can be grateful for small mercies and the gentle, beautiful and SILENT butterflies fluttering around us! Enjoy your weekend. Regards, Odette

Does anybody know what kind of butterfly this is, and add more to Odette’s delightful “report” (left).

In addition to his captive opening email address, Ryan Buist - above, with fellow research Scouts - sent us this stunning initial report titled “Seagrass Decimation in Doha Port”. Read on…

Why are Seagrasses important? Seagrass provides many benefits to Marine Eco-systems and the environment as a whole. The habitats created by seagrass meadows help im-prove the diversity and number of marine ani-mals. Seagrass meadows on reef flats and near estuaries act as nutrient sinks, adding to or fil-tering nutrient and chemical inputs into marine ecosystems. Seagrass also helps to stabilise coastalsediments, helping clear the water and

Dear Sir, My name is Ryan Buist, a 14 year old Kiwi who has lived in Kuwait for almost 10 years, and am part of Boy Scouts of America Troop 965. I am working on a project for my Eagle Scout Rank about seagrasses. I am going to confirm to what extent seagrasses still exist in the sites where they were found in 2008 and to try and raise awareness about these seagrasses in Kuwait. I have already visited one site and it does not look promising. I have written an article, which is attached, about our visit and I was won-dering if it would possible for you to publish it in EEK! magazine to help in my effort to raise awareness. If you would like more information about my project or Troop 965 please contact me either via this email or by my mother's mobile: [number supplied]. Thank you for your consideration and assistance, Ryan Buist

improving water quality. These meadows also provide food and shelter for many organisms and act as a nursery ground for prawn and fish spe-cies that are commercially important. I am a 14 year old Kiwi (New Zealander), study-ing at the Kuwait English School and a member of Boy Scouts of America Troop 965. I am cur-rently leading a project to fulfil a requirement

for the Eagle Scout rank. My project will try to find out what seagrasses still exist in Kuwait and to raise awareness of their importance to the world’s oceans. Seagrass Watch HQ, an international organisation trying to protect the 6 known species of sea-grass, supplied me with some data they had re-ceived about the two species found in Kuwait

from 2008. In this information, it was shown that the seagrass meadows in Doha were easily visible on the intertidal zone and at an average 8cm in length. This is far from what the situation is like now. On the 8th March 2013 I led a survey of the Doha Port seagrass site, with the help of members of Troop 965. Our discoveries were very worrying. The intertidal zone is covered in algae, the sea-grass only visible if you’re standing on top of it and then it is only an average 3cm in length. But

when you look around you see possible reasons why: A factory on the coast was constantly bil-lowing out fumes ; A vehicle, whose driver has obviously decided that the intertidal zone is his personal 4X4 area, driving all over the algae and the little that is left of the seagrass; The algae itself is a reason. Its population has grown so much that it smothers the seagrass and blocking the little light that reaches the undernourished seagrass. The destruction does not stop there. Many of the

general shellfish that live among the algae and seagrass meadows have died due to pollution of the Gulf. In addition, there is evidence of the overpopulation of another species that feeds predominantly on the algae thus choking off the food available for the other shellfish. Also, fami-lies go out onto the intertidal zone, taking all sizes of mollusks, destroying the population bal-ance. It is truly a sad sight to see.

I will be conducting two further surveys of sites on the Southern coastline and will be reporting my findings – stay tuned! Ryan Buist For more information on seagrasses visit: http://www.seagrasswatch.org/home.html

Seems Dr. John Hayes is quite a popular fella in town. Yea. So, he does magic with his stunning series on busi-ness and franchising right here on EEK!’s pages, then goes and starts the Kuwait Leadership Mastery (KLM article EEK! issue #2 April 2013), and now this! Check out 248AM’s response (left, we agree, stunner line there from “The Doc”) Published in Kuwait Times - and soon on our pages as well - a killer series on the blogosphere in Kuwait.

And why is this so hot? Well, because hit by hit Kuwait has one of the highest ratios of “residents vs blogger” in the universe. Easy. So the questions is, de we really nee….oooooh-kaaaay. Noooo, we won’t even speculate or comment. Why don’t you sit closer and read Dr. Hayes’ articles over the next couple of weeks. Folks, this is going to get interesting. BOOM! Dr. Hayes lets rip! This guy just seems to hit nerve after nerve - in the best possible way!

There are, so far, 396 bird species recorded in Kuwait, or so we think. The number may have changed today with a new species discovered by some dedicated birdwatcher an hour ago. So, by the time the "Birds of Kuwait: A comprehensive visual guide" was presented last September, the autumn migration had started for the birds of the Western Palearctic (*) and, just days after the book's official "opening" at the luxurious KUFPEC** Headquarters, four more species were discovered by the amazing amateur birders in Kuwait. Maybe this spring migration will reveal more...

Having a book like this is a good, updated base-line: We now KNOW and SEE, in absolutely stun-ning photography of 36 photographers, 18 of whom Kuwait-based or Kuwaiti nationals, which birds visit Kuwait, which ones live here, where they hang out and what their international status is. And putting all this info together wasn't easy: In only nine months from the birth of its con-cept, the book was delivered to its sponsors in 1500 copies. In the meantime, photographers of several nationalities were consulted, character differences and opinions were revealed (because

all birders, all over the world, are extremely passionate regarding... what else? Their passion. Have you watched last year's Hollywood movie "A Good Year"? This is exactly IT!). A team of six (Graham Whitehead from KUFPEC, Mike Pope from KORC, and "the Biodiversity East four" Nancy Papathanasopoulou, Aris Vidalis, Vasso Vlami and Stam Zogaris) in three different countries and two different continents worked on it intensively, daily, sometimes around the clock. A further team of four (the Kuwait Orni-thological Rarities Committee) revised and brain-

stormed (emphasis on the word "storm") in Ku-wait, as soon as the drafts and proofs started appearing. Some inevitable Middle-Eastern de-lays in processes and procedures did not facili-tate things. All were often on the edge, such an endeavor was not meant to break all previous records in such massive work. 416 pages, 6000 photos to choose 1500 from, 36 photographers to coordinate in 7 different countries and deliver in 9 months. But it did. Record-breaker in the re-gion, the Birds of Kuwait, despite some inevita-ble imperfections, have spread their wings and took off the ground. The sponsors generously

offered it to schools, libraries, international or-ganizations. Generously they ordered a reprint. It, too, was delivered. And now the sponsors generously aim higher: The world. Beyond the whopping 3,5 kg of a monument-hard copy book, the Birds of Kuwait go electronic. The contract was signed with Bio-diversity East (www.bio-e.org) only a little time ago, and the work is in the making: Three elec-tronic products, taking it into all electronic de-vices: Smartphones, Tablets, Computers: An ebook, internationally available at Apple's iBook-store; an App for iPhone, iPad and Android, de-picting the birds in a functional list as a field guide; last but not least, a website comprising all the info of the book, for everyone to consult, featuring important links and additional features for any enthusiast, student, researcher. To de-liver in five months from today. Watch this space! Like with Kuwait Sea Base, the iPhone App that Biodiversity East produced last June, putting for the first time regional wildlife in Apple's inter-national App Store, this "Phase 2" of the Birds of Kuwait book is bound to travel the globe and be downloaded or used by all bird enthusiasts in the world, including many education professionals, researchers, amateur ornithologists, libraries and natural history museums. With a previous international reputation of "being made of sand and oil", Kuwait is now, largely thanks to these recent environmental education efforts, finding its place next to other

countries in the region who project their envi-ronmental wealth a lot. And is definitely pio-neering the "electronic version" of information/awareness on its nature. It took a visionary Chairman, Mr Nizar Al-Adsani of KUFPEC, a wonderful fieldwork friend and ally, His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed Yousef Al-Sabah, Assistant Undersecretary of Border Secu-rity Affairs and Chief of Police, a team of friends and supporters (individuals and organizations), 36 amazing photographers and a tiny group of passionate professionals at Biodiversity East to help Kuwaiti birds break their relative silence and spread their wings to the open, in all their beauty and might. First Kuwait and the region, now the world. Fits with some of the birds' pro-file, anyway. So many of them have traveled the world to migrate here. Better tell the whole world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Palaearctic Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Company, www.kufpec.com. Ladies and gentlemen were in party attire as they attended the CUP CAKES & HIGH HEELS event which took place at THE ONE Tea Lounge Café in Salmiya on the 18th March 2013. The High Society Fashion event included a touch of elegance a mix of style and the scandalous affair between 19 year old Kuwaiti fashion designer Ali Al Saad, celebrated makeup artist Jihad Salmassi and Hair stylist Abeer from Dazzle Beauty Salon. The results had the guests whisper-ing, talking and gossiping. Selections of Ms. Tiffani’s Jewellery pieces were also on display.

THE ONE Cafe served the guests a selection of canapés, teas and of course mouth watering cupcakes, scones and cream. Hotel Missoni Six Senses Spa awarded the prize for the most stylish lady of the evening as well as donating two spa gift vouchers; guests also received gifts from THE ONE Salmiya and Tea Gschwendner . Hi, my name is Georgina. I am a teacher living in Kuwait. I am originally from the UK and have lived in Kuwait for just over 5 years. I am passionate about many things in life and foremost- my friends and family. I was driving to work one morning in January of this year, listening to some music that I listened to when I was at university and I suddenly felt a buzz and happy feeling. Having recently been told that a family member had been given the ‘all clear’ after treatment for cancer, I felt the sudden urge to want to do something ‘good’ for a society and support a cancer charity. I tried in vain over the next few months to arrange a big event in Kuwait, inviting DJ’s from the UK and Dubai to participate in a fundraising event. I had support from many wonderful people but as venues are few and far between here, it was a fruitless exercise. I then decided to utilise my impulsive and idiosyncratic behaviour to good use and throw myself out of an aeroplane instead! I have skydived once before in 2009 and always wanted to do it again, so where

better than in my neighbouring country of Dubai?! Well, I’ve done it! Prior to the jump I was really excited and nervous at the same time but what kept me going? …the con-stant flow of kind messages of support and praise from friends and family for what I am doing. We are only on this planet once and you should make as many people as happy as possible in that short time! If you would like to support this good cause, click on the link at the bottom of the page! I will email photos of the dive to EEK soonest, but meantime I th9ught I had to share my experience with you!! Thank you Georgina

IAmJester.Com is a website that wants you to play! In a world where people have become so dis-connected and im-mersed in their tech-nology, the founder of IAmJester.com wanted to bring back old school board games in the hopes of getting people interacting and playing to-gether again! What is IAmJester.Com exactly and how does it work? IAmJester.Com is an online store that sells board games, and delivers them to you within 2 hours. The idea is that whenever you are sitting with friends or family and you’re bored, instead of turning on the TV or picking up your phones, you order a game and play it together. The process is pretty simple, you go onto the website where you see the selection of games avail-

able, place your order and voila! To help you choose we have also made it so you can filter the games by recommended age, number of players, play duration or genre. What’s with the weird name? Well I always get asked this question, why call a website I Am Jester? The name came from wanting the concept to be an interac-tive experience, you are not visiting a web-site you are visiting Jester, whose sole pur-pose is to entertain people and bring joy. So far the reaction has been pretty good; people have fun interacting with Jester

through his Twitter and Instagram accounts. Does IAmJester.Com also throw game nights? Yes we have done three so far, all of which have been a blast! People come and play the games, meet other people and have a good time. Whenever we are having one, we announce it on Twitter and Instagram so

be sure to follow us if you are interested. Website : www.iamjester.com Telephone : 96 95 25 95 Twitter : Hello_Jester Instagram : Hello_Jester Facebook : IAmJester.Com

Ladies DUBAI, UAE:-Due to overwhelming demand and with thousands of regional Justin Bieber fans still believed to be looking to lay their hands on Justin Bie-ber concert tickets when the first Dubai show sold out-Done Events is proud to announce that Justin Bieber will now per-form a second Dubai show on May 5th. “No no sir, really, just take the card from the internet connection and put it in your mobile phone. Sometimes

they lose the signal, but if you put them in the phone the signal is there you can see it.” This is how I was told

how stupid I am for believing for one second that my internet was not working.

How could I?!

Let’s see, internet speed “red arrow up” 0.04 KB/s, “green arrow down”…uuuuhp, there now its 0.00KBs… OK, let’s “Disconnect” again….wait a few seconds…aaaaand

“Connect” again…OK, OK, now its “green arrow down” 1.44KB/s - CHECK - Google’s page does not open (LOL never mind CNN’s!) - CHECK – a single 23kb photo in a

classified ad does not open - CHECK - the signal strength bar on our connection strength indicator shows 5/5 bars, that’s good isn’t it - CHECK – we’ve restarted our

machine three times now - CHECK – we’ve tried the internet connection on our, and on a visitor’s laptop - CHECK – and urmmm, no luck right? RIGHT! So then folks,

why, why, whyyyy would the technician on the other end tell us to put our internet connection card into a mobile phone to “catch the signal again”?!!!!! COME. ON.

WE. ARE. NOT. THAT STOOPID!

After calming down we politely ask for a ticket number, you know, the number against which our complaint or technical query has been posted. “No no sir you see

there is no problem on our side, you must fix it on your side.” So we said “my dear habibi, listen, we’ve had this problem a few times before, are you sure about your

facts, will the phone trick fix it?” To which followed “must be”.

OK, we do the card swop change thing. Signal, as before, is great. We wait 7 minutes (supposedly this helps the card to “grab” and then “hold” the signal?) and we put

it back, try to connect to the internet, and low and beho……false alarm? Yup…NO INTERNET CONNECTION. :)

So, we’re asking you, have you also had connection problems lately? Because the last “CHECK” we have for you, for two straight days running (14 and 15 April) we

had virtually zero internet. We had stunning signal though! Are there others out there in EEK!land who have this internet problem? If you have a second to spare,

please write us and tell us about your internet non-connectivity issues. Oh, and of the level of non-support you got from the help desk.

(You HAVE to wonder what ever happens to those recorded phone conversations that “could be used for training purposes”?)

Well well wel...another earthquake shakes Kuwait, this time a lot more tangible. Early reports and internet chat indicated a strong earthquake of 8.0 magnitude had reportedly struck Iran, near the border with Pakistan. The National Center of Meteorology and Seis-mology later confirmed an earthquake of 7.8 in magnitude had struck in Iran. Graphics & info: www.earthquakestoday.info

If Three Dog Night, once the most popular

band in America, told us that “One is the

loneliest number.” But in business, it may

be the most dangerous number. It’s one

number that can put you out of business

fast!

Fact: You have one supplier for a

product or service that’s critical to your

customers. If something happens to that

supplier, what happens to your business?

Will your customers wait until you find an-

other supplier?

Fact: You have one piece of equip-

ment. It breaks down. What now? Your

customers won’t mind that you can't help

them today, and maybe not for a month?

Fact: You have one contact who

can send more business your way when-

ever you need it. He falls out of grace and

gets replaced. What now?

Fact: You have one star sales per-

son. She gets a better job. What now?

Fact: The one politician you backed

just lost re-election. What now?

Fact: Your one employee in Ac-

counting knows who owes you money. He

just got run over by a bus. What now?

How many ones you got?

You get the idea.

One of anything in business is al-

most always a wreck waiting to happen.

Start looking for the ones that exist in your

business now.

And just in case you’re thinking

that two is better, remember that Three

Dog Night also told us, “Two can be as bad

as one.”

How many systems you got?

It’s often said that people are a

business’s greatest asset. Sounds good,

doesn’t it? But most employees don’t be-

lieve it. And with good reason, especially if

they’re not paid well or treated well.

The truth is, people come a little

lower on the valuation scale. Product, ser-

vice, location may all out-score the impor-

tance of employees. So do systems.

How many systems operate your

business?

Systems (not people) make busi-

nesses work efficiently, effectively, and

happily. The most valuable businesses are

operated by a series of systems that peo-

ple follow. There are systems for opera-

tions, marketing, sales, training, customer

relationships, etc. Each system may be

propelled by several more systems. In Op-

erations, for example, there may be sys-

tems for HR, IT, Finance, etc.

Systemization is one of the rea-

sons why franchised businesses are suc-

cessful. You may not own a franchised

business, or care to, but you'd be ex-

tremely happy if your business ran like a

well-oiled franchise operation. Who would-

n't want a business like McDonald's or

Starbucks or Holiday Inn or Sign-A-Rama?

These businesses never stop generating

revenue for their owners, and that's with-

out the owners ever stepping foot into

most of the locations.

How does that happen?

Systems.

Systems that tell people what to

Mike and fellow EEK!ers, Apologies for the overdue update for EEK - too many other priorities seem to have gotten in the way, as you know. Nevertheless, a snippet for this weeks edition. I had a short visit to Sharq Harbour last week, mainly to see and photo-graph the Common Black-headed Gulls in their breeding plumage before their imminent departure north for the breeding season. There weren't that many around, as many had already left - but I must admit they do look smart in their new 'kit'. I noticed a Great Cormorant (these

birds will also be heading north soon) fish-ing around the Dhows in the Harbour. It was catching a mix of live and dead fish discarded from the fishing boats and really gorging itself. For those that don’t know, Cormorants dive and swim underwater to catch their prey. After a long dive, it came up with quite a big fish. They normally shake the fish, then rinse, shake, rinse and flip it a few times so that they can swallow head first. Unfor-tunately, this Cormorants coordination was a little out, after one shake it failed to hold tight and the fish looped through the air and fell about 1-foot away from the Cor-morant. Before it could blink it's green eye and

work out where it's breakfast had gone, this immature Heuglins Gull swooped down from above (where it had been eye-balling this Cormorant for some time) and literally snatched the fish out of the water before the Cormorant had time to recover. This was a classic, you snooze, you lose - thanks for the snack! Cheers, Mike. Spend more time with Mike Pope at his brilliant blog: kuwaitbirding.blogspot.com

Now available in Kuwait from Al Mulla and Be-hbehani Motor Co. W.L.L. (MBMC), the Fiat Fiorino - which won the Best Light Van Award in the 2012 Van Fleet World Honours -represents a whole new choice for the light van market thanks to its compact style, useful performance and exciting styling. Designed to be agile in ur-ban surroundings, the new Fiorino is easy to park and highly economical to operate.

The Fiorino is already enjoying success in the Kuwaiti market, with MBMC recently completing a delivery of 14 Fiorino’s to Taw9eel.com. “Headquartered in Kuwait, with local offices in Riyadh, Cairo and Dubai, Taw9eel Group is one of the leading e-commerce groups in the Middle East. We operate the region’s largest e-

commerce websites Taw9eel.com and Sheeel.com with delivery to 9 countries across the Arab world,” said Frank Berger, Operations Manager at Taw9eel.com. “We chose the Fiat Fiorino due to its capability, proven reliability, competitive pricing and low operating costs, all of which are vitally important factors to us - especially when these vehicles will be delivering a 24 hour service throughout Kuwait.Plus, of

course there is the added reassurance of dealing with MBMC.” Developed through a joint venture between Fiat and PSA, and manufactured at the Tofas plant in Bursa, Turkey, the Fiat Fiorino occupies a unique LCV segment, being the first ultra-compact vehi-cle to have been specifically designed for use in busy towns and cities. “The rapid growth of e-commerce has led to a substantial increase in demand for small vans to deliver goods and services ‘the last mile’ to homes and businesses. In this context, compact dimensions and outstanding manoeuvrability out-weigh the need for excessive carrying capaci-ties,” said Bassam Shehab, Fleet Sales Manager at MBMC. “With an overall length of only 3,864 mm and a turning circle (between kerbs) of just 9.95 metres, allied to a load capacity of 650 kg and a maximum load length of almost 2.5 me-tres, the Fiat Fiorino sets new standards in ultra-compact urban van practicality - we’re delighted that Taw9eel.com chose the Fiat Fiorino, espe-cially given the strong competition in its seg-ment.” Powered by a 1.4-litre 75 bhp petrol, the Fiorino offers strong performance, reliability and econ-omy with the added benefit of environmental friendliness. Thanks to long service intervals and

the arrangement of some engine components, maintenance or repair times are considerably reduced, thus making it very cost effective to run.The 1.4 litre 16V 4-cylinder engine is coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox and produces 75 bhp and 118 Nm of torque, returning fuel con-sumption figures of 6.3l/100km, with low noise and vibration levels. At just 3.86 metres in length, the new Fiorino van offers surprising interior dimensions, with a capacity of 2.5 m3. This can be increased to 2.8

m3 and the working length expanded to 2.5 me-tres courtesy of a fold away passenger seat. A range of safety equipment, including ABS anti-lock brakes with EBD, three-point seat belts with pretensioner, load limiter and driver’s airbag, all come as standard. A passenger airbag and rear parking sensors are also available. The Fiorino’s comprehensive passenger and load protection features also include high energy absorbing areas around the driver’s compartment, while large bumpers offer protection at low speed and are easily removed for minimum repair costs.

The operational capability of the Fiorino range can be further enhanced through a choice of one or two sliding doors, foldable front passenger seat, panelled bulkhead with or without glass partition, removable loading area light with torch function, longitudinal roof bars, etc. For ease of loadspace access, the load threshold is just 527 mm high. The full-height, asymmetri-cal (60/40) rear doors can be opened through both 90 and (via retractable tie-rods) 180 de

grees, and customers can specify either one or two sliding side doors. Every Fiorino version boasts a 1,046mm loading width between rear wheel arches, six strong, practical load securing rings and a robust nine-rung, steel ladder cab/load compartment partition. With security in mind, the Fiat Fiorino also fea-tures separate front and rear door locking (so that the load area can be used with the cab locked), alarm and a deadlock that disables the door’s interior handle. The Fiorino is the latest addition to the revital-ised Fiat Professional range, which aims to build sales and market share both in Kuwait and throughout the Middle East region over the next few years. “The Fiat Professional range has already made a major impact in the Kuwait fleet market - the range of competitively priced, strong and reli-able products available through MBMC also in-cludes the Doblo and Ducato as well as the Fiorino - we’re currently developing a number of very promising deals with a number of other ma-jor corporations in Kuwait and are very excited about these new additions to our range,” said Shehab.

Kevin works for the U.S. State Department, but might have to play hooky from work if his beloved Washington Capitals actually make the playoffs this year. The Premier Goal Academy, under the patronage of H.E. the British Ambasador and sponsored by Porsche Centre Kuwait, Behbehani Motors Company, hosted the Brit-ish Royal Navy football team from HMS Monmouth at Bayan recently. Crew members were enjoying a welcome break from duties at sea in the Gulf with a short stop over in

Kuwait. Coaches and senior players from the P.G.A. in association with Everton F.C. provided the opposition for a very confident and physically daunting navy team. After a thoroughly competitive and enjoyable encounter it was the fast feet, superior skill and clinical finishing of the P.G.A. team that won the day by 8 goals to 5.

Pet Passage Pet Import & Export Services Karen Orobey +965 6697-5644 [email protected]

I am leaving Kuwait on the 18th April 2013. I am currently in a beautiful 1 bedroom apartment in Shaab. The apartment is in a newly built block (about 1.5 years old) in a very nice part of Shaab with excellent road connections beating those morning jams. The apartment is on the 15th floor and has a small bal-

cony (with sun lounger) with amazing views of the Gulf and over looking Salmiya. The apartment is available from the 19th April with rent paid up until 1st May. The apartment comes fully furnished and ready to move in to with all modern items. A summary includes:-OSN connections, 32 inch

Samsung TV, Samsung DVD player, Whirlpool silver large fridge freezer, Indesit washer / dryer, gas cooker, large corner sofa from Safat Homes, Bar table and stools from Safat Homes, Ikea double size bed, wardrobe, x2 display cabinets, side table, wooden coffee table from Safat Home, large lounge rug, iron, ironing board,

hoover. The apartment is very homely and well kitted out including a new hard plastic shower screen, blinds, curtains, kitchen cutlery, pots, pans, water filter, flowers, vases, cushions, etc. Basically its a mod-ern home to move in to without any hassle of purchasing items! All items are maximum one year old - many slightly less (nothing is on credit). I paid in total over 1500KWD and given my departure from Kuwait happy to accept 1000KWD for everything including the remaining 12 days rent! (move in from 19th April). I pay

375KWD a month for the rent - you can negotiate with the provider where necessary. Contact: [email protected] Or +965 9725573

EEK! wants to thank you for your active participation in our classifieds section. To make it work even better for all of us, consider the following: 1) EEK! has the final decision on whether an ad gets published...or not. 2) We provide absolutely NO guarantee whatsoever that the advertised items will sell.

They may. Price your items right, we’ve rarely seen “real” collectables for sale! :) 3) Never ever expect EEK! to go out according to your house sale date or time -

a.k.a. send your sales listing in ten days or more before your sale starts. 4) We will not send out a listing as a separate email if you missed that week’s issue. 5) We try to keep a listing in for two weeks, don’t expect to have your ad “in the next

12 issues of EEK!” 6) Mark your email clearly with “CLASSIFIED SALES” or “HOUSE SALE”, or “CAR FOR

SALE” or something similar in your email’s SUBJECT LINE. 7) EEK! never gets involved in the transaction or negotiation of advertised goods. 8) We will not send the ad as placed in the e-mag to the advertiser “to get approval

on the layout”...never ever.

BUYING ADVERTISED ITEMS Every now-and-again we get mails from buyers and sellers telling us about their experiences

with sellers and buyers, respectively.

Allow us to make a few comments which we feel are important to note:

1) EEK! does NOT get involved in the interaction between buyers and sellers.

2) Refer to “1)” above.

3) Note to buyers; once you’ve made arrangements with the seller, get your business done as soon as

possible. The seller - and allow us to use these words ( :) - could not care less about whatever

“situations” you may have. We’ve seen this time and again, regardless of your arrangements, sellers

mostly tend to have a “first come first serve” attitude (for many good reasons!).

4) Cash is king. When the seller has “here’s you’re KD50 for that TV” vs. “let me get some money and I’ll

be back”, the aforementioned will always get the deal...ok, lets say in most cases.

5) In four years we have NEVER seen anything on these pages sold with a warrantee - don’t expect one

and if possible check and see if the goods you’re buying are in working order!

6) Pick up your purchases ASAP. Once you’ve paid your money, the seller is absolved of all responsibility.

7) Once the seller has left the country, don’t expect much support from him/her about stuff you bought

and are now locked up in their old empty apartment and the harris does not want to release it etc etc.

8) Refer to “1)” above...yes, again, please. :))
