Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT)

2013 District PERT Training

1Return signed Test Administrator Security Agreement to confirm attendance.

Training is being recorded.

Requires high schools to evaluate college-readiness of students before grade 12High schools began to administer the PERT in fall 2011.Other approved assessments that can be used to demonstrate readiness are ACT, SAT, Accuplacer (CPT)Students who do not meet college ready scores will be required to complete postsecondary preparatory instruction before high school graduation. 2Section 1008.30, Florida StatutesPERT will be administered in high schools because it is used in Florida colleges. Other assessments that can be used to demonstrate readiness are the ACT, SAT and the CPT which is College Boards Accuplacer. Broward will only supply PERT tests.

The statute states a student who does not demonstrate readiness after completing the PERT or other approved assessment, must complete postsecondary preparatory instruction. Students are considered college and career ready when they have the knowledge, skills, and academic preparation needed to enroll and succeed in introductory college credit-bearing courses within an associate or baccalaureate degree program without the need for remediation. These same attributes and levels of achievement are needed for entry into and success in postsecondary workforce education or directly into a job that offers gainful employment and career advancement.

College and Career Ready3The purpose is to provide the needed college-ready competencies in high school so that students are ready to enter college prepared to enroll in a college-level, credit-bearing course.

Florida is looking to better prepare students for college and reduce the remediation rate.

PERT is Floridas common placement test. It is used by all 28 Florida colleges and all public high schools to determine if a student is ready for college credit courses in reading, writing and math.

The PERT has been aligned with the Postsecondary Readiness Competencies (PRCs) identified as necessary for success in entry-level college credit coursework. What is PERT?4The Postsecondary Readiness Competencies (PRCs) are skills identified by high school, college and state university faculty as critical to college readiness in mathematics, reading and writing.

PRCs are true assessments of what students need to know before enrolling in ENC 1101 and MAT 1033

What are Postsecondary Readiness Competencies?5Read SlidePERT testing window starts Oct. 28, 2013 and goes to May 30, 2014Tests may be administered during regular school hours, before school and after school but must always be administered by certified school personnel.(McCann Help Desk is open on Saturdays 9:00-5:00) for schools who want to administer PERT test on Saturdays.

PERT Administration Window6College readiness evaluation is required for 11th grade students who scored:Levels 2 or 3 on Grade 10 Reading FCAT 2.0 Levels 2, 3, or 4 in Grade 10 Algebra 1 EOC Special Diploma students for whom the FCAT is an appropriate assessmentDepartment of Juvenile Justice studentsCharter School studentsFull-time public virtual school students

.GRADE Students Required to take PERT7Students who meet college readiness with CPT, SAT or ACT are exempt from taking PERT. In fact they do not test PERT.

PERT Reading increased from 104 to 106. PERT Writing increased from 99 to 103. PERT Math increased from 113 to 114.

ACT Reading increased from 18 to 19.

A student who scores below the college-ready scores must enroll and complete postsecondary preparation instruction in 12th grade prior to high school graduation.

All students entering grade 9 in the 2011-2012 school year and after must pass the Algebra 1 EOC or attain a comparative score of 97 on the PERT Math for a standard high school diploma.

PERT MATH score 97 does not represent college ready. PERT college ready score is 114 or above.PERT Concordant Scores/PERT Math College Ready Score9Computer adaptive test (C.A.T.)Reading, writing and mathematics subtests25 operational questions on each subtest plus 5 field test questionsEach test item is aligned with a PRCItems have been approved and aligned by Florida facultyAccommodations available based on IEP or 504 Plan (Braille, large print, paper and pencil, and audio versions)

PERT Test DesignThe PERT is a computer adaptive test which means the computer adjusts the difficulty of questions a student receives based on the students response to previous questions in an attempt to identify their ability level in fewer questions than a traditional paper and pencil test.

A students score will be based on their responses to 25 questions and there are an additional 5 field test questions that serve to continuously test new questions and update the item bank. Each question on PERT is aligned to a Floridas Postsecondary Readiness Competency and was approved by Florida college faculty.

PERT tests are untimed within one school day.

Administration times are:Mathematics 37 minutesReading 1 hour, 3 minutesWriting 33 minutes

Average PERT Testing Times11 Each student will receive the same number of questions for each subtest. The test is not timed. The average completion times are 37 minutes for mathematics, 33 minutes for writing and an hour and 3 minutes for reading.

Students may be administered PERT more than once in the same school year if the student did not score college ready on their first attempt.

If the student does not achieve a college ready score on their first PERT attempt in a subject area/areas they are allowed to be administer a PERT Retake test in that subject area/areas but only after there has been sufficient time for remediation.

Contact Student Assessment & Research if a student has taken both attempts at PERT and still have not achieved a college ready score.NEW - PERT Retakes12List of eligible to students to test has been submitted for upload into College Measured Success.

List of eligible students to test will also be posted to Data-warehouse (DWH Reports Folder)

High Schools will be responsible for managing your own ongoing list of students who test PERT, ACT, SAT, CPT.Student Upload List13

23Districts/high schools may choose which postsecondary preparatory instruction courses to offer from the following approved courses:

Math for College Success (1200410) - 0.5 creditReading for College Success (1008350) 0.5 creditWriting for College Success (1009370) 0.5 creditEnglish 4: College Prep (1001405) 1.0 creditMath for College Readiness (1200700) 1.0 credit Refer to the Comprehensive Course Table https://www.osfaffelp.org/bfiehs/fnbpcm02_CCTMain.aspx24Postsecondary Preparatory Instruction Courses10/23/2011The only courses that are approved for postsecondary preparation instruction are the five courses listed. This is because the course work must be aligned to the postsecondary readiness competencies of the Florida College System. _______________________STOP HERE_________________Administrators, guidance counselors, and teachers are encouraged to consider courses carefully before selecting the most appropriate course for student enrollment

For example, A student who scores in range of 96-112 on the P.E.R.T. Mathematics may be placed in either the Math for College Success or readiness course. Likewise, a student who score in the 84-103 P.E.R.T. Reading range may be placed in either the success or the English 4: College Prep course.

Students who enroll in Mathematics for College Success, Reading for College Success, and Writing for College Success may not earn core academic credit to satisfy graduation requirements. These courses count as high school electives. These courses will satisfy elective credit for State University Admission purposes and Bright Futures 4-year Gold Seal Scholarship requirements. Refer to the Comprehensive Course Table to verify eligibility information.

Math for College Readiness and English 4: College Prep count as 1.0 credit courses and will satisfy core mathematics and English graduation requirementsBright Futures Scholarship Program eligibility requirementsState University System admission requirements.ReadingFreshmen Composition Skills I (ENC 1101)English 4: College Prep(1001405) or other English (EN) courseScores of 104* - 150WritingFreshman Composition Skills I (ENC 1101)English 4: College Prep(1001405) or other English (EN) courseScores of 99*-150MathematicsIntermediate Algebra (MAT 1033)Math for College Readiness (1200700) or other mathematics (MA) courseScores of 113*-122College Algebra or Higher (MAC 1105)Recommend Advanced or Accelerated CoursesScores of 123-150PERT College-Ready Scores*Course Placement Options25CPT and P.E.R.T scores are valid for two years. If a student achieved a college-ready score and they are dual-enrolled, they are exempt from testing.

Students scoring at or above the college-ready cut score are eligible for dual enrollment in college-level courses provided that they have a 3.0 unweighted GPA and meet any additional admission criteria specified in the district Dual Enrollment Articulation Agreement.

A 2.0 unweighted GPA is required to enroll in career certificate courses.

A student who has a college-ready score for reading and writing may enroll in either the English 4: College Prep course or ENC 1101 (must meet admission requirements above). The student may also choose other course options available at the high school (e.g. AP or honors)

A student who has a college-ready score in math of 113-122 may enroll in Math for College Readiness, but may also be considered for MAT 1033 (must meet DE admission requirements above). MAT 1033 will count toward college electives, not math core for degree requirements. A student who completes MAT 1033 with a C or higher may take MAC 1105.

A student who has college ready math scores of 123-150 may be placed in advanced or accelerated courses, and may be considered for MAC 1105.
