• Voted unanimously to participate in the City redistricting process and established guiding principals:
Conform with the California Constitution definition of a community of interest: A community of interest is a contiguous population which shares common social and economic
interests that should be included within a single district for purposes of its effective and fair representation.
Keep neighborhoods together Limit gerrymandering as much as possible Create a majority student district
• Shared intended process with forty-two (42) neighborhood groups. • Established a subcommittee to produce plan variations for review by entire
group.
The Redistricting Process
• Four (4) variations were presented with over 40 participants providing feedback.
• Subcommittee took back comments and returned to group with two (2) map options for ratification.

• Over thirty (30) participants voted unanimously to submit based on the following principles:A City Charter conforming map (keeping existing
councilmembers in their districts)One map onlyLimit dividing neighborhood groups
The Redistricting Process
• In the third and final meeting a ratified map was accepted with a vote of 15 yea, 3 abstain, 0 nay. It created:A West Berkeley DistrictKept all neighborhoods together with the exception of the
accommodation for two councilmembers.A student majority district that included the North Campus
dorm but did not include the southeast Greeks.Maintained major arterial boundaries east of San PabloWith two exceptions conformed to < 1% deviation (this could be
addressed by shifting some north University Avenue major apartments currently located in District 1 into District 3)
