Our Mission: To enable children challenged by autism and individuals facing life challenges to triumph, to realize their maximum potential, and to live truly happy and fulfilling lives.

Mission Statement

“The Son-Rise Program® changed my life and the life of my daughter, who showed all the signs of early-stage autism. Today she thrives because I knew exactly what to do: ignore all of the dire predictions and immerse her in ... the principles and techniques.” Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, #1 New York Times bestselling author of I Can See Clearly Now (and many other books)

“Before I came to the Option Institute, every day was a struggle. After an 11 year losing battle with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome ... a short trip to the grocery store was enough to wipe me out. I would forget even the simplest things, and my mind seemed like it was in a fog much of the time. I felt like I was in a living hell.

After attending my very first Option Institute weeklong program, I was able to climb the mountain on the property, attended classes, went out to eat, went swimming and woke up rested and relaxed for the first time in years.

Now, I work a 40-plus hour week ... and still have plenty of energy left with which to enjoy my life. I am pursuing physical activities, such as hik-ing, biking, and kayaking ... I have my health and my life back, thanks to the tools I have learned.” Ellen Stanley, Maine Manager/Developmental Therapists

Statement of Purpose At the Autism Treatment Center of America®, a division of the Option Institute®, we teach parents and educators to implement The Son-Rise Program®, an internationally recognized method for children with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental challenges. The Son-Rise Program is based upon the idea that joining children in their own unique worlds before asking them to join us in ours makes it possible for these special children to defy their often very limited prognoses.

At the Option Institute and Fellowship International Learning & Training Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, we help people surmount life challenges and live happier, more self-empowered, and more successful lives. Through our personal development programs and the methodology of the Option Process®, we enable people to re-frame how they see events, circumstances, and themselves so that they can cultivate inner strength and emotional well-being.

“We listened numbly as our son was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and with Childhood Dysphasia. We were told that he had little chance of a successful future even with special education. He lined up his toys instead of playing with them. He was not giving us eye contact or following simple commands. He would bang his head when things did not go his way. He seemed generally unhappy, almost constantly whining. Everywhere we went, I was told that he would be dependent on others for the rest of his life.

Then we went to The Son-Rise Program. As soon as we returned home, we began our program; and within 6 months, he was using language. One day he walked up to me and spontaneously announced, ‘I love you, mommy!

We did a program with him for 3 1/2 years. Incredibly, when our son went to kindergar-ten he tested normal in all areas. At our final evaluation with The Son-Rise Program the teacher said to us, ‘You’re done’ and I sat in tears at my dining room table—a truly unfor-gettable moment.

How do you thank someone for helping to save your child? For helping you bring him back to your world? What The Son-Rise Program has done for us is priceless. We will be forever grateful.”

Guiding Principles: Autism Treatment Center

of America®

1. Each child on the autism spectrum is a gift … to be cherished and embraced exactly as he/she is.2. Nothing can match the love, dedication, and real commitment of the parent.3. Rather than forcing children to conform to a world they do not understand, we join them in their world first.4. The children show us the way in, and then we show them the way out ... inspiring each child to love human interaction.5. Children on the autism spectrum are capable of limitless growth and change.

It started with a dream. We wanted to create a very special retreat center. No matter what kind of intense challenge you were facing in your life, you would be cared for with a loving and totally nonjudgmental atti-tude. You would be given the tools to LIVE BIG! To be the very best of yourself so that you could overcome even the most seemingly insurmountable obstacles! And you came.

At first, the staff consisted only of me and my wife, Samahria – plus one additional person to cover the phones. Samahria and I would teach every class then do one-on-one dialogue sessions at night with each participant. As we worked 7-day weeks, we kept our big dream in sight. And the first small group of you came. We taught our classes in a small unheated barn (with blankets for participants during New England’s colder months). Mattresses leaned haphazardly against walls, to be spread across the floor when that same room transformed into participant housing each night. You all pitched in with meal preparation, washing the dishes, staining the sides of buildings, and cleaning rooms. All of us were so excited to do anything and everything to create and support a hope-filled sanctuary where the Option Process® and The Son-Program® would be taught to people from across the globe. And you came. And because you came, and you donated generously, here we are 30 years later, with a staff of almost 80 dedicated professionals, working with thousands of individuals and families each year from over 100 differ-ent countries on every inhabited continent. Samahria and I know what it is to overcome massive life hurdles. In one key example, our own son was diagnosed with severe autism. Although we were told that his condition was hopeless, we didn’t give up. We created The Son-Rise Program to help him (against every scrap of advice and guidance we received), enabling his complete recovery – and now helping thousands of other families and their children. We all know the profound meaning of someone reaching a hand out to us at our lowest point and saying, “I’m here for you. I believe in you. I’ll help you turn what others call a curse into a blessing.” When you’re told that your child with autism will live a life of suffering, and everyone around you agrees. When you’re diagnosed with cancer, and every message you’re given is one of fear. When you’re going through a di-vorce, and it seems like your entire life is falling apart. For over three decades, we’ve been there for people like you, no matter what the challenge. And you’ve been there, holding hands with us, giving life to something unique in the world. Thank you, thank you, thank you for building this dream with us.

With love and gratitude,

Bears (Barry Neil Kaufman)

The 2013 fundraising year was successful because of you, our donors! Your commit-ment allows the Option Institute® and Autism Treatment Center of America® to serve so many people from around the world; we could not do our work without you.

For the second consecutive year, your philanthropic efforts have allowed us to raise $2 million. As a result, we were able to provide $1.7 million in financial aid to those program participants who would not otherwise have been able to attend our courses and training.

Our donors are the lifeblood of what we do; every time a donation is made, it is a priceless gift. Thank you for your continued generosity, investment, and support in our pursuit to enrich the lives of so many.

We could not be more appreciative that the resources that our donors have provided have impacted the lives of thousands of individuals and families. Donors are our part-ners, holding hands with us and traveling this journey step by step. Thank you for being there when your help was most needed, and thank you for your belief in all that we do!

“We participated in The Son-Rise Program® several months ago with our son. His prog-ress has been amazing! In the past few months, he has said over 30 words, and he had never spoken before. His eye contact has increased dramatically. He has even begun to use 2 and 3-word sentences. More importantly, the sound of his laughter echoes through our house. I don’t know if I could ever express how grateful we are to you for being there for us. Thank you so much for everything.”

The 1980’s:Several key structures are built, including: • The Option House, site of all group classes. To this day, when running two concurrent group programs, we continue to host classes in this very special venue, with its giant-stained glass window. • The first and second Son-Rise Program® buildings. • The Ravine House, living quarters for our program participants. The foundation of much of our future curriculum is created: • The first classes on the Option Process Dialogue®, our signature method of helping individuals. • The Son-Rise Program Intensive® (working with parents and their children with autism) and the first advanced training course for these parents.

Some highlights of the Option Institute’s last 30 years:

The 1990’s:Great expansion in every area for the Institute. • Bears writes his best-selling book, Happiness Is A Choice, attracting a new global audience to the Option Process, the Option Philosophy™, and the Institute’s group programs – even spawning the Happiness Is A Choice (later Shortcuts to Happiness) program.

The 2000’s to Today:Thanks to our generous donors participating in a her-culean capital campaign, the Institute constructs two monumental buildings: • The Hilton Summit House, a breathtaking structure that is now our primary teaching facility. • The Taylor-Roy Residence, providing beautifully upgraded living quarters for program participants – and also allowing people with disabilities extremely easy and convenient access to both the Mountain House and the Hilton Summit House.Critical innovations occur in our teaching: • Bears writes PowerDialoguessm, presenting for the first time every aspect of the Option Process Dialogue. • The month-long Mentor Certification program– a boot camp-like total immersion curriculum that allows participants to become proficient and qualified in the Option Process® Dialogue. • The development of The Son-Rise Program Social Developmental Model, enabling parents and educators to track their children’s social develop- ment and plot out precise curriculum for growth. • The development of a career-track training system for Son-Rise Program Child Facilitators and Teachers.

The 1990’s continued:The construction of two crucial new buildings: • The beautiful Mountain House dining facility. Participants from every inhabited continent can locate a tiny piece of home simply by looking up, where scores of national flags hang from the ceiling. • The current Son-Rise Program building, situated on a piece of property purchased directly across the street from the original campus. Not only is this building and property ideally located, but it sets the stage for The Son-Rise Program expansion that would happen a decade later. • A game-changing leap forward in The Son-Rise Program: The Son-Rise Program® Start-Up, the first group program for parents – a course that forever altered the landscape for families with children on the autism spectrum. Families who have previously needed to wait almost two years can now get help immediately. Instead of working with a maximum of two families per week, we can work with a hundred, leading to international growth. After the BBC in the UK films and airs the hit documentary, “I Want My Little Boy Back,” which followed a Son-Rise Program family’s journey, the Institute holds a Start-Up course in London with 275 participants.

14

At the end of 2013, The Journal of Communication Disorders revealed findings of the study, “Promoting Child-Initiated So-cial-Communication in Children with Autism: Son-Rise Program Intervention Effects.”

Although studies have been published which validate some of the individual techniques of The Son-Rise Program, this is the first sci-

entific study evaluating and demonstrating the effectiveness of The Son-Rise Program as a whole. This peer-reviewed study, conducted by Northwestern University in the U.S. and Lancaster University in the U.K, showed scientifically significant improve-ments in children who received Son-Rise Program treatment compared to a control group who didn’t receive any Son-Rise Program treatment.

What’s especially remarkable is that the children in the experiment demonstrated quantifiable results in only a week of The Son-Rise Program, showing improvement in three key areas:1) Social/communication skills 2) Interactive attention span and frequency of interactions 3) Spontaneous social communicative interaction (This piece is crucial. It denotes child-initiated interaction as opposed to prompted interaction, revealing the child’s own desire to interact with others vs. doing it because he/she is told to.)

Empirical data thus validates what we at the Autism Treatment Center of America® have seen for thirty years. Now that The Son-Rise Program has support from the scien-tific community, we expect the study to serve as a catalyst, opening the door for families to get funding approval for program tuition from local and/or state sources – and greater support for their Son-Rise Programs from professionals and their communities.

Study Validates The Son-Rise Program®

“I am a physician who treats thousands of children & adults with Autism Spec-trum Disorders, and I have seen The Son-Rise Program in action both for my own son and for countless others. The program is sensible and useful for affect-ed persons with ASD’s of all ages, and I refer patients to The Son-Rise Program frequently. The results have been scientifically validated and are excellent both for the family and the patient, and I’ve seen the objective improvements in my patients with my own eyes.” Phillip C. DeMio, M.D., Executive Director: American Medical Autism Board, Chief Medical Officer: U.S. Autism & Asperger Association (USAAA), Ohio

“In my practice of psychiatry in a teaching hospital over several decades, I have never been introduced to a set of clinical principles as powerful, elegant and effective as those of The Son-Rise Program®. By joining children in their world, practitioners of The Son-Rise Program endeavor to eliminate the sense of isolation so often expe-rienced by children on the autism spectrum. The outcomes are truly stunning: children make concrete and sweeping progress, often far outstripping their original prognosis, and parents overcome feelings of devastation and learn to accept, enjoy, and meaningfully help their children.” Ted McCarthy, M.D., Maine Former Chief of Psychiatry, Mercy Hospital

“I came to the Option Institute at the age of fifty, desperate, depressed and in a deep pit without a way to climb out. Many years of therapy, anti-depressants and other medications from former physicians and institutions had left me hopeless. Twelve days at the Option Institute changed the manner in which I view my entire life. The choice is mine – create the greatest version of me possible or remain miserable. If I choose the former, the Option Institute has the framework, tools and love for me to get there.”

Dear Donors and Participants,

Thank you for making 2013 such a successful year! Without your commitment to the work that we do, we wouldn’t be able to continue offering life-changing programs to people from around the world. This year has been a fantastic year for the Institute as we have grown revenues as well as made key invest-ments in our future.

In 2013 the Institute has increased program revenue by 0.5%, and donations have grown by 3% - resulting in the greatest amount of donations received in a single year!

This year the Institute has made the following investments: • Our marketing budget was increased by $127,000, allowing us to better reach and serve current and future participants. This has enabled us to: ˚ Create a new service hub for our teachers and parents to track their children’s progress. ˚ Begin developing our first online training classes, reaching participants from around the world who want our teaching but are unable to travel to our Berkshire location. ˚ Begin redesign of both the Option Institute® and Autism Treatment Center of America® websites. • We began a new class of trainees to become Son-Rise Program® Child Facilitators – our first level of trained service providers for our Son-Rise Program. • We invested in renewing and updating resources for better client experiences, such as Spanish language manuals to serve our growing client base in Latin America.

Additionally, the Institute has kept our administrative costs low, with only a 3% increase.

Finally, two exciting facts for you to ponder: • This year, 81% of our donation funds provided financial aid directly to families and individuals in need. • This year, 29% of our budget came from donors …

From people just like you! Just imagine how many more people we could reach if everyone donated at their ability. Helping people change their lives is our passion and our mission, but as you can see, it takes more than passion to keep our work here alive. Won’t you please help us continue this work?

With appreciation,

Christie S. EllisChief Operating Officer & Treasurer

“Long before medical science understood that the brain is fluid and can be changed, The Son-Rise Program was treating children and adults with autism using this principle to guide them. Our children are not ‘stuck’ with neurological problems. Autism is not hard-wired. I know this as fact, for my own son fully recovered from autism to become the pres-ident of his 6th grade class today (in a regular, mainstream school) thanks to my family’s adoption of The Son-Rise Program. As a medical professional, I know that medicine today offers little to these children other than a dismal prognosis. It doesn’t have to be that way! Not only do many children completely recover using this program, but whole families change and grow and thrive.”
