his talk was entitled as “High-Mobility Semiconductor MOSFETs for Beyond the Silicon CMOS Technology”. He addressed the issues of Ge and III-V materials as a potential alternative of widely used silicon and their associated pros and cons; as the trend in CMOS industry kept with the continuous scaling down of devices. His lively lecture drew a wide group of enthusiastic audiences, all IEEE members, exceeding 70 in number from various universities—BUET, RUET, AIUB, IUT, UIU, EWU to name a few. An interactive session between Professor Haque and the participants over the issues he brought forth marked the successful end of the DL program.

A day long workshop on VLSI Design Using Cadence EDA Tools was held on 8th July 2013 in VLSI Laboratory, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka, Bangladesh. The event was jointly organized by Department of EEE, BUET, IEEE EDS/SSCS Bangladesh Chapter and IEEE GOLD Affinity Group of IEEE Bangladesh Section. Due to the limitation on the numbers of licenses of the Cadence EDA tools, total number of participants were limited. The participants had to pre-register for the event. A total 15 (fifteen) IEEE Members attended the workshop, where 11 are members of IEEE GOLD Affinity Group of IEEE Bangladesh Section. The workshop started at 10.00 AM. IEEE GOLD Bangladesh Chair, Mr. Sajid Muhaimin Choudhury introduced the speakers at the beginning. Chair of IEEE EDS/SSCS Bangladesh Chapter, Prof. ABM Harun-ur Rashid conducted the first session. He gave basic idea on CMOS technology, fabrication process and VLSI design flow. Afterwards Shah Md. Abid Hussain, Lecturer, United International University, conducted the Tutorial sessions. Participants were given hands on training to effectively create and edit schematics for use with the full suite of Cadence® simulation and layout tools. Participant created the schematic of a macro cell using Virtuoso Schematic editor L, created symbol and performed Spectre simulation to verify functionality of the cell. In the evening session layout of the macro cell was created, Design rule was check, Layout Versus Schematic was done and post Layout simulation including parasitic extraction was performed. The daylong workshop included two light refreshments and a lunch for all registered participants. At the end of the workshop, Chair of IEEE Bangladesh Section, Prof. Pran Kanai Saha distributed certificates among the participants and gave a concluding speech, thanking the participants and the organizers. The event concluded at 5.00 PM.

IEEE EDS/SSCS Bangladesh Chapter organizes a seminar on Graphene for Transparent Flexible Electronics and High Speed Devices on Sunday July 28, 2013 at Huawei Lab, 5th Floor, Dept. of EEE, ECE Building, BUET. 40 participants attended the seminar of which 23 were IEEE Members. The talk was conducted by Dr. Samiul Haque, a Graduated from Warwick University in 2003. Dr. Haque also did his PhD from University of Cambridge, UK in early 2008 in Carbon Nanotube based sensors. His focus was on compatibility of nanotubes and nanowires of CMOS platforms. He joined Nokia in March 2008 in Helsinki Nanosystems division to work on graphene and CNTN based devices.

Dr. Haque’s talk fouces on Graphene which has recently attracted tremendous interest in various research areas due to its exceptional electrical and mechanical properties. Its unique band structure is notably being exploited in nanoelectronics to achieve novel high-speed devices such as field effect transistors and frequency multipliers. Application of Graphene in areas of novel user interface technologies, Battery, Solar Cells, RF Devices, Antennas and Novel Sensing applications on Flexible and Stretchable platforms were discussed. It was also emphasized that future wearable devices, displays and photovoltaic devices require materials which are mechanically flexible, light weight and low-cost, in addition to being electrically conductive and optically transparent. Transparent material

such as indium tin oxide (ITO) is the most wide spread transparent conductor in optoelectronic applications, however the mechanical rigidity of this material limits its use for future flexible devices. In the race to find novel transparent conductors, graphene monolayers and multilayersare the leading candidates as they have the potential to satisfy future requirements.

The talk was followed by a refreshment and informal discussion of the speaker with the attendee.

Section and Department of EEE, BUET on Saturday 3rd August 2013 at the VLSI Lab of the Department of EEE, BUET. The title of the Seminar was. “New High-end Processing Technologies: From New Memories (PCRAM, ReRAM) to High Mobility Channels (III-V, Graphene)”. Dr. Zia Karim, Sr. Director, Business Development and Global Customer Support AIXTRON Inc., 1139 Karlstad Drive, Sunnyvale, CA 94089, USA (Email : [email protected]) presented the lecture. To keep up with the diverse applications of memory devices, a number of next generation memory options are being studied, such as STTRAM, PCRAM and ReRAM. The memory configuration is also changing to 3-D structures. In addition, the demand for low power high performance Microprocessor is a must for future Logic Devices involving high mobility channel FinFET using III-V films and Graphene. Dr Zia focuses on all aspects of the above topics. A very interactive discussion was held after the seminar.
