Ten Years of proving

Demographics Don’t Define Destiny

For the past ten years, KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools has been work-ing to equip students with the academic skills, scholarly habits, and character traits necessary to be successful in top quality colleges and the competitive world beyond. We began in 2003 with two flagship middle schools and over the years have grown into a network of seven schools serving more than 2,000 prima-ry, middle, and high school stu-dents. The KIPP Through College program serves more than 800 alumni on their journey to and through college. By 2018, we will serve more than 3,300 K-12 students.

Demographics Don’t Define Destiny

College was just an idea before KIPP.

Charles King, an alumnus from KIPP WAYS Academy, explains that college was just an idea for him until he enrolled in KIPP. “At KIPP WAYS Academy college was the top priority. I knew the first day of school that I was in the Class of 2011 (the year I would gradu-ate high school and matriculate college) because a giant banner hung in our hallway to remind us.” Charles remembers the banner followed them every year to each hall they occupied. “College went from being just an idea to being a goal.”

CHARLES KING, 2007

I was on a different path than my peers. KIPP alumna Jazmin Flemings credits KIPP South Fulton Academy (KSFA) for ensuring she was the first person in her family to attend college. She describes her first years at KIPP as difficult. “I was an only child who thought everything was about me. I did not like KSFA at first, from having to wear a uniform to attending school from 7:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. to having homework every night. I had an attitude and talked too much. Ultimately, I realized that I was on a different path than my peers in my neighborhood. They were not talking about college or their future.”

Like Charles, Jazmin attributes her focus to the visual reminders. “We wore shirts with the year we would graduate from college on the back—2016. “Going to college became something I had to do, not just something I could do.”

My parents were learning about college along with me.Charles remembers the focus on college at KIPP WAYS Academy impacting his parents. “When I began learning about the path to college, my parents were learning with me.” School staff held work-shops and provided support to students and their families about high school options and necessary college preparatory coursework.

Charles ultimately received a scholarship to attend high school at The Darlington School in Rome, Georgia.* Charles credits his reli-ance on the KIPP WAYS Academy values of scholarship, teamwork,

integrity, perseverance, and fun to ensuring his successful climb to college. “We saw the values listed in the hallways, we talked about them in class, and we lived them in our interactions with our fellow teammates. And I have realized that the values are not limited to KIPP WAYS Academy; they are life lessons that I draw upon every single day.”

KIPP prepared me well. During Jazmin’s eighth grade year the rigorous process of choosing a high school began. “It was like applying to college! Our teachers made sure we understood high school was an important part of our climb to college.” She chose to attend Carver Early College so she could take college coursework at Georgia State University while in high school, and says, “The rigor and structure at KIPP South Fulton Academy prepared me well for the demands of high school.”

To ensure our students are prepared for college, KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools implements a rigorous college preparatory curriculum aligned to Common Core Georgia Performance Standards, which now begins in Kindergarten and continues through high school. To gauge our students’ progress toward college preparedness, we use the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment, a national norm-referenced test that provides

teachers data on student academic progress throughout the year. KIPP Atlanta Collegiate offers AP coursework and students monitor their college preparedness by taking a suite of ACT assessments. Additionally, the KIPP Through College program supports our alumni by providing tutoring, hosting workshops and college tours, and serving as an additional support network for our students on their journey to and through their college years.

I plan to be the principal of a KIPP school.

Charles is now a junior at the University of Georgia (UGA) who spends his summers working with KIPP. He has interned at the KIPP Metro Atlanta regional office and

with the KIPP Foundation. At the Foundation, he spent two sum-mers supporting the KIPP School Leadership Program in Chicago.

Charles has plans to continue his journey with KIPP. majoring in middle school education at UGA, he intends to be a KIPP teacher, and ultimately, a KIPP School Leader. “I have plans to be the principal of my own KIPP school in Atlanta called KIPP Ignite Academy,” he says proudly.

KIPP changed my life. Jazmin is a sophomore at the University of West Georgia major-ing in biology, with aspirations of being a dermatologist. She continues to keep in touch with KIPP staff, and she spends her academic breaks tutoring students at KIPP South Fulton Academy and volunteering with the KIPP Through College office. “KIPP changed my life, and I want to pay them back. Giving of myself and my time is the least I can do.”

This framework of support, dedication, and perseverance produces significant results. KIPP Metro Atlanta students consistently outperform their peers on the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT). The Georgia Department of Education recently recognized KIPP STRIVE Academy as a 2012 geor-gia school of excellence. In 2013, 93% of our alumni graduated from high school and 87% received college acceptances.

Our students also excel in areas beyond academics. In 2013 KIPP South Fulton Academy and KIPP STRIVE Academy won awards in

regional debate tournaments, and KIPP Atlanta Collegiate won the state debate championship. KIPP Metro Atlanta students participate in Junior Achievement. KIPP STRIVE Primary students participate in a robust choral program and perform at events citywide. The KIPP WAYS Academy and KIPP Atlanta Collegiate bands perform at sporting events, com-munity events and take national tours each year.

Your support will ensure our work impacts many more students in the metro atlanta area.

2013 mAP RESULTS Our youngest KIPPsters are far outperforming the national norm on the measures of Academic Progress (mAP) test, which is administered in fall and spring to assess academic growth over the year.

2013 HIGH SCHOOL EOCT RESULTS KIPP Atlanta Collegiate students outperformed their peers on the 9th Grade Literature and Geometry End of Course Tests (EOCTs). Statewide, student scores in algebra declined as the new Common Core-aligned algebra assessment was introduced. This test is indicative of the increased rigor of the Common Core, and we are working hard to ensure our students are equipped to meet the demands of this new curriculum.

2013 EIGHTH GRADE CRCT RESULTS Our eighth graders outperform their peers on GA’s Criterion Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT).
