Dr. Laurence Benedict Alex-ander, a New Orleans native working at the University of

Florida with a 26 page curriculum vitae of accomplishments and experience, became Chancellor of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff July 1, 2013. A triple threat in his own right, he has every reason to be proud of his impres-sive dossier – but according to him, he’s just getting started. Dr. Alexander is the youngest of five children reared by their mother, a sin-gle parent, in the Desire Housing Proj-ects (a public housing facility in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans). Desire was known as the poorest housing de-velopment in New Orleans bordered by railroad tracks, the Mississippi River, the Industrial Canal and a corridor of industrial plants. It was known among locals as “Dirty D.” (Desire has since

been demolished, but has been noted historically as one of the city’s most crime-ridden areas). “I was too small to know the level of poverty that existed at that time,” said Alexander. “[I had no idea of] how shabby the projects were. I believe I was protected from that in some way.” Of his mother, Alexander says: “She did a really fine job. I can only imagine how difficult it must have been for her at that time.” After he finished fifth grade the fam-ily moved to another location in New Orleans. Influences early in life compelled him to become a journalist. “I actually found myself wanting to be the person that brought the news to the world, tell the stories that would help to change lives and change conditions in the world.”

Dr. Alexander worked for more than a decade in various journalistic positions including copy editor for The Philadelphia Inquirer, contributing writer for Tulane Law School’s The Bench, staff writer for The Times-Pic-ayune and Houma Courier, and edi-tor-in-chief of Driftwood in New Or-leans. He completed his undergraduate degree in Drama and Communications at the University of New Orleans and a Master of Arts in Communications and Journalism from the University of Florida. During his successful career at the Times-Picayune, he renewed his inter-est (that he developed as an undergrad-uate) in the courts. “I was really interested in their im-pact on society - how they functioned, made decisions, interpreted the law and how constitutional law affected our lives as it relates to injustices like Brown vs. Board of Education.” This interest landed him at Tulane University School of Law where he

pursued his juris doctorate with the goal of covering courts. When he finished law school, his focus changed as his eyes were opened to legal and policy research which ultimately led to an opportunity to fill a faculty position at the University of New Orleans. “I really felt like I had found my calling. This is one of the things I was really meant to do with my life. Education is a proven method of assisting people and helping them find a pathway out of poverty.” His academic path led him to Temple University where we worked as Assistant Professor of Communications and eventu-ally the University of Florida (UF) where his career skyrocketed. “When I came to Florida, I really came ready. I was ready to hit the ground run-ning – I had several projects in the works, several projects in my head, had developed a teaching style and my own notes, prac-tices and policies. I had become a solid classroom teacher and was ready to take on the challenges.” Although confident, Dr. Alexander says he never came in with the attitude that he

had it made. He asked deans, chairs, asso-ciate chairs and whomever he could talk to about what it would take to be successful there. He listened intently and made up his mind that this was something he was going to put his heart and soul into. He feels that “the best leaders are those that continue to learn.” His student centered approach to teach-ing garnered several awards and honors from the University of Florida including the Distinguished Alumni Professor Award, Distinguished Faculty Award, membership in the Academy of Distin-guished Teaching Scholars and Faculty Award for Outstanding Teaching, to name a few. Among the litany of awards, he is most proud of the Freedom Forum Teacher of the Year Award he received in 2002. A national award, recognition is given for ex-cellence in teaching and leadership in the core areas of print and broadcast journal-ism. “It was a very prestigious honor to have been chosen among your peers as one of the best educators in your field. It was a

very proud moment.” He is also very proud of the Distin-guished Alumni Professor Award he earned while at the University of Florida in 2001. The award is only given biannually to one faculty member. Chosen from a finalist pool of more than 200, Dr. Alex-ander made it to the final four nominees and came out on top. This honor enabled him to receive a stipend to travel to dif-ferent alumni chapters of the University of Florida (known as Gator Clubs) and rotary clubs to do presentations about his research and various talks about public law, politics and journalism. “It drew me closer to the area of alumni relations. It gave me the chance to really get out there and work with alumni, our foundation and its board.” Another perk of the honor included a seat on the national board for the UF Alumni Association. He was able to take part in decision making and experience working on the same level the board mem-bers did. He also received an appointment to the board of directors for the UF Athlet-ics Association where he was able to work with the athletics director and coaching staff which gave him a better understand-ing of how athletics and academics can work well together for the success of the university. Although Dr. Alexander has enjoyed a successful career in journalism and education, he knew he was capable of more and wanted to make an even greater impact. “I was at the point of my career where I wanted a leadership opportunity to apply the skills I have attained over the years.” His first voyage to Arkansas started as a finalist for the Provost position at the Uni-versity of Arkansas at Little Rock. That was when the door of opportunity opened – he was then made aware of the Chancellor

search at UAPB. In his job as Associate Dean of The Graduate School at UF, he worked essen-tially on diversity recruitment and was fully aware of UAPB and its academics. He started looking at the opportunity and saw great potential where his skills could be applied. He was also captivated by the his-tory of the institution and induction of the Ph.D. program in Aquaculture/Fisheries. “It shows a real sign of maturity when a University can advance to the level that it has the trust of educational leadership in the State to put programs in place to confer the highest degree that is awarded. I think it speaks well of what can be accomplished at UAPB now and in the future.” His family is supportive of the oppor-tunity and is just as elated as he is about the road ahead. His wife Veronica was delighted when she got the news. His sons Brandon, David and Tyler were wowed by the announcement initially and see it as a great opportunity for him. Brandon is an academic advisor at Santa Fe College while David and Tyler are currently pursuing

college degrees. He noted that David started out as a business major and recently changed course to follow in his father’s footsteps – he is going into public relations while Tyler is majoring in biology. “I’m glad they saw their father working hard these years and are able to see that hard work has a payoff. They are very proud that Dad is at an HBCU.” Dr. Alexander met his wife while attending the Uni-versity of New Orleans. They both majored in drama and communications, but met for the first time in Spanish

class. Their relationship flourished after he finished law school at Tulane University. They were married a year later. Suffice it to say that this new chapter in his life will be full of meetings, planning and implementation of his strategies and ideas; however, it is just as important to be able to regroup and rejuvenate to be an effective leader. He likes playing golf, looks to undertake motorcycle riding and wants to take time to explore Arkansas. Dr. Alexander is honored to follow chancellors like Davis, Johnson and others and looks forward to bringing in a new era to UAPB. Having worked for the past 26 years as an administrator, Dr. Alexan-der is well acquainted with the ups and downs of administration at large, complex institutions and has learned a lot of lessons along the way. He looks to galvanize the excitement and expectation of change that comes with new university leadership. “I believe people at UAPB are sincere and are ready to move even higher – and I am ready to lead.”

The BowtieHis earliest recollection of wearing a bowtie was when he graduated from Kindergarten. He also remembers his mother dressing him in a bowtie for Holy Communion at st. Phillips Catholic Church near the Desire Projects where they stayed. He continued to wear them off and on through the years and likes the variety it brings. “Bowties are in fashion again and are worn more often, but wearing them also allows me to have a connection with younger african american men.”If you look around uaPB’s campus, you are likely to see a male student in a bowtie on any given day. Dr. alexander also likes to be different, noting that it’s much more common to wear the long tie. “When you show up in a bowtie, you are making a clear statement that you dare to be different. I truly believe that [doing something different] is what it takes to be successful, to be the best and stand out. I’m being my true self when I wear a bowtie.” Now with the charge to purchase several black and gold ties, he now has to find a place to store his blue and orange ones and other Gator apparel. “It’s time to roar with the Golden lions.”

On May 29, 2012, Dr. Calvin Johnson left the leisure of retirement to serve as interim chancellor of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. His career in education as a teacher and faculty member spans more than 30 years. He served in the Arkansas House of Representatives from 1998 to 2004 and former member of the Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Johnson earned his bachelor’s degree in agriculture education at UAPB and a master’s degree in counselor education from the University of Central Arkansas. He completed his Ph.D. degree in adult education and public school administration at Kansas State University. According to Johnson, his role as dean complemented his role as chancellor since many of the things that deans are required to do are very much tied into the work of the chancellor. Dr. Johnson reflected on the past year and recalled some of the highlights of his tenure: Initiating the first annual Chancellors Excellence Awards; renewal of accreditation for the Teacher Education program; and success of athletic program.

“Being able to hold the trophy when the football team won the SWAC championship is a memory I will never forget.” He is also very proud of the progress the university has made toward improving customer service. It was disappointing for Dr. Johnson when he attended the meeting where the Arkansas Natural State Board of Nursing decided to close the Nursing program at UAPB. “I understood what they were saying;

nevertheless, it was a program that several students were interested in.” It was also very difficult to have received the news of a possibly tragic accident involving the Vesper Choir in March. Thankfully, the resilient group only suffered minimal injuries and were able to complete a successful tour. Adjusting the scope of consideration when running an institution was the most noticeable difference from years as a Dean - you are required to engage a different group of individuals and do your best to make a fair decision. With the goal in mind to remain viable and competitive, Johnson touted accreditation of programs such as teacher education; however, funding continues to be the biggest hurdle to overcome. The balancing act comes in when trying to meet productivity standards and serve the university’s historic mission to serve students that are not considered to have the best odds of graduating. “I think we should be commended for taking those students that other institutions, in some cases, will not admit and moving them into the mainstream of academic success.” When thinking of faculty and staff, Johnson feels thankful and is appreciative of all employees of the university.

“I’m always reminded of the importance of every employee when I see workers taking care of the grounds and making sure we have a clean work environment each morning – to me, all of that makes up the university community.” Specifically to faculty, he is thankful for their support of the university and his position as Interim Chancellor. He urges them to continue working together and be aggressive in asking and working for what they want and ultimately transfer that resolve to their students. “We must do a better job in preparing our students for the next level,” says Johnson. “We must require them to learn their subject matter. Whatever it takes, we have to work with them to get it done.” He is passionate about valuing every student and doesn’t like seeing any of them leave the university. Dr. Johnson is always thinking something could have been done to retain them - helping them work through financial aid, academics and social adjustment with an emphasis on mentoring and a precedence for high expectations. “We can’t give students the answers – we have to make them dig for it – and then recognize them for finding the answer.” When asked about what he would tell Dr. Alexander, he said he would urge him to understand the culture of a historically black college, its faculty, and students, have high expectations and be patient to work with individuals to maximize their potential. “If [faculty and staff] know you support them and are interested with them, they will do what they need to do to raise the bar.” Johnson believes coming in with an open mind along with doing assessments in terms of where people are and where they need to be will help Dr. Alexander have an enjoyable experience at UAPB. When asked what was ahead of him after July 1, 2013. Dr. Johnson said he looks forward to learning how to be retired - he’d only been out of the office from his position as Dean of the School of Education for 10 months before accepting the position as Interim Chancellor. He also plans to visit elderly family members, grandchildren that are growing up too fast and pursuing personal projects. He also mentioned helping out in other areas at UAPB, noting that he sees some areas where he may be of assistance. “I do not look forward to sitting at home and doing nothing. That’s not me, I can’t do that.

University Relations and Development graciously acknowledges the Pride Magazine and Tisha Arnold for contributing the narratives on both Dr. Laurence B. Alexander and Dr. Calvin Johnson.

Thank you for the financial support you give to students attending the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). My goal is that we strive to be student focused, success driven, and mission based. To accomplish this, I will rely in part on the many alumni and friends like you who understand that success comes with a cost. You know funds are needed to assure that our students receive an education that will allow them to keep pace with professional and industry standards and that our physical plant, learning environments, and our academic and extracurricular programs remain relevant. As I move forward to preserve the legacy of greatness to which this institution has attained, I will be ever vigilant to assure that our students have the resources needed to outperform their counterparts in the job market, our faculty and administrators meet or exceed the qualifications needed to perform their responsibilities, and that our physical plant is well-maintained. Our level of success depends in part on the level of your continued generosity. Again, I thank you for being a vital part of the quality education our students receive.

Thank you for your gifts that benefit students attending the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

You should see the faces of the students who benefit from your generosity—the smiles, the excitement, and the serene expressions of knowing they will be able to meet their financial obligations. Those of us who interact with the students see first-hand the power of giving—it’s a wonderful thing to see.

Each year hundreds of students rely on the contributions of our alumni and friends and each year over 1500 individuals do not disappoint them. In 2012-2013 nearly $400,000 was awarded to students for scholarships, books and school supplies. Many of the students had no other options for paying for tuition, fees, and the other expenses of attending college.

You make it possible for dreams to become reality and for this we thank you.

Sincerely,

Dr. Margaret Martin-HallDirector of the Office Relations and Development - Title III Program Administration

As I continue in my role as Chairman of the UAPB Foundation Fund Board, I am very encouraged by the commitment and continued support from individuals like you.

The generosity, devotion, and commitment many of you display for the legacy of Branch Normal, AM&N College, and now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff are encouraging. It is because of alumni and friends like you that this institution has grown and prospered through 140 years of progressive, albeit, challenging eras. Our supporters are responsible in part for historic growth. From meager academic and extracurricular programs, to an institution boasting a PH.D. in Aquaculture/Fisheries, an internationally acclaimed choir, the marvel of M4, the NCAA’s “Big Dance” and SWAC Champions, we applaud those who have been with us as an integral part of our ongoing successes.

As you continue to embrace our tradition, personify our pride, and add to our legacy, please be ever mindful of the honor we feel in having you remain an essential part of the future success of UAPB.

Sincerely,

Larry CooperFoundation Fund Chairman

The Vesper Choir had an outstanding year of performances on campus, in the community and at venues in several cities in Arkansas. During the year the Choir sang at fifteen churches and schools in Arkansas, and eight churches and five schools while on spring tour in Chicago, Milwaukee and Detroit. Outstanding among the special performances were: A performance at the Coahoma Community College Choral Festival held in Clarksdale, MS; a November appearance with the Arkansas Choral

Society in their 85th annual “Messiah” performance held at the First Pentecostal Church in North Little Rock; three Christmas concerts performed with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra at Robinson Center Music Hall in Little Rock; as well as performances at East Arkansas Community College in Forrest City and South

Arkansas Community College in El Dorado. Special thanks are extended to our faithful and generous alumni and friends in Chicago, Milwaukee and Detroit for their support of our annual spring tour. The UAPB Vesper Choir says thank you presidents and members of those chapters for providing the Choir with lodging, many meals and a wonderful spirit of cordiality, friendship and fellowship.

The University Museum and Cultural Center, established in fall 2004 through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Postsecondary Education, HBCU Title III Initiatives, is a self-supporting UAPB exhibit hall funded solely through grants and private donations. Created for historical reference, this impressive edifice holds past photographs, programs, sports memorabilia and legal documentations from Branch Normal College, AM&N College and the University as it is known today. This is the permanent home of the “Keepers of the Spirit: L.A. Davis, Sr. Historical Collection” which documents the more than 140 years history of UAPB. Each floor of this three story building uniquely captures the essence of UAPB’s history from the first steps taken as a promising higher educational facility for African Americans to the ground-breaking steps of entering into the University of Arkansas Systems. In celebration of the university’s 140th Homecoming Week, the University Museum and Cultural Center developed two new interpretive exhibits entitled “Welcome Home: Things Aren’t What They Use to Be.” Features include primitives used during the early 20th century and “The Elite Eight: Fraternities and Sororities at UAPB” – a visual account of former black historical organizations chartered on this campus. In addition to the Keepers of the Spirit exhibit, the museum also features a large collection of catalogs, yearbooks, letters and other ephemera that document the lives of the people who helped to mold the history of the university and the Arkansas Delta. The story of this institution is told through a series of large scale photographic panels with text, memorabilia and other artifacts. Also, the museum offers innovative educational programs and changing exhibits on the mezzanine level designed to increase awareness of the accomplishments and contributions of African Americans.

Yulanda Riley and the team of students, Travis Adams (Political Science ’12), Mariam Kaleem (Biology ’12), Marion Muhammad (Business Management ’13), and Joseph Robinson (Psychology ’12), participated in a case competition in San Bernardino, California and received the first place award for the 2011 National Case Study Champions presented by Black Voice Foundation, Incorporated. The foundation’s mission is to develop diverse talent through creative professional development that will provide students the “Opportunity of a Lifetime”. The program targets students who do not know they could be passionate about showcasing their talents and abilities to prospective universities, employers and global opportunities. The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and California State University-San Bernardino topped a list of 150 minority

institutions nationally that were invited to participate in the competition. In September, the Foundation assigned each team a task to develop a creative and diverse recruiting plan for an

employer in order to increase the employer’s standings as an employer of choice for students on their campus. The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff ’s team presented strategies United Parcel Service (UPS) could use to recruit diverse groups of college students. Riley is the Project Specialist/Career Coach in the Office of Career Services and is coordinating a project to “Increase Retention through Career Preparation.” This project is funded in part by a grant from the U. S. Department of Education, Office of Post-Secondary Education, Institutional Services Program (Title III, Part B, Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program). Your continued support will assure programs like this one continue to provide outstanding career experience for our students.

PRIORITY GIVINGAll donors are important to the advancement of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). Donors who give to one of the three top priority areas (Unrestricted, Lifeline Scholarship and General Scholarships) add greater strength to their gift. Of the priority areas noted, unrestricted dollars give the university the greatest flexibility to address important areas of need – those that directly impact the students we educate.

On the following pages are the names of individuals who have supported the plea for donations to the areas of unrestricted, Lifeline Endowed Fund, and general scholarships.

CORPORATE AND FOUNDATION MATCHING GIFT PROGRAMThe University continues to be grateful for the support of its corporate partners. The companies and corporate foundations listed on this page are those that have provided contributions to the University and its Foundation through their matching gift program. The University urges its alumni and friends to investigate the matching gift program that may be offered through their companies. Some companies offer programs, which will match one-for-one, two-for-one, or three-for-one. The program may even extend to the employee’s spouse.

This is an excellent way to multiply gift dollars and have a greater impact on academic programs. To take advantage of a company’s matching gift policy an employee may obtain a form from their company’s corporate giving office and send it in along with their gift.
