2013 Alumni Survey Summary of Results
Marymount’s Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness conducts a survey of Marymount’s alumni every fall. The survey asks alumni to evaluate their experiences at Marymount and report professional and educational achievements since graduation. Survey results are used to examine Marymount’s effectiveness in providing its students with a quality educational experience and to identify where to make improvements.
Survey Administration and Response Rate
A paper survey was mailed to Marymount’s alumni in fall 2013 who graduated in 2008‐09 and 2011‐12. Alumni who did not respond by mail received an email reminder. Thirty‐two percent (32%) of graduates and 24% of undergraduates responded resulting in an overall 28% response rate.
Key Findings from 2013 Alumni Survey
Overall Ratings of Marymount Experience
At least 80% of undergraduate and graduate alumni rated their overall experience and the academic quality as good or excellent.
Only 75% of undergraduate and 66% of graduate alumni rated their advising experience as good or excellent.
Contribution to Personal Development
With undergraduate alumni, their Marymount education most influenced their openness to new experiences.
Graduate alumni indicated that their Marymount education contributed most to developing an interest in lifelong learning.
With all alumni, the university contributed least to their development of spirituality. Educational Preparation
In terms of obtaining specific skills through their Marymount education, on average, both graduate and undergraduate alumni rated their preparation to find sources of information the highest.
Using average ratings, graduate alumni feel least prepared to use technology and undergraduates to conduct research.
Career and Employment Information
60% of undergraduate and 71% of graduate alumni were employed within three months of graduation.
The first job after graduation was directly related to their studies for 50% of undergraduates and 64% of graduates.
20% of graduate and undergraduate alumni respondents indicated that they found employment at their internship site.
37% of undergraduate and 22% of graduate alumni have pursued additional education since graduation.
Relationship to the University
43% of undergraduates and 33% of graduates indicated that they feel connected to Marymount. If given the opportunity to do so, 68% of undergraduate and graduate alumni would choose
Marymount again.

This survey is really long...
The strongest aspects of my MU education were persuing my Bachelor of Liberal Studies and other things that I had experienced during this time which were more helpful to me in order to accomplish my studies.
The small classes allowed closer interaction amongst students and professors for which I'll forever be grateful. It allowed me to get to know one of my all time favorite professors in a way I never would have like when I was at UVa.
The closeness of the Marymount community was not only motivational, every professor was truly invested in my education and success.

The curriculum was broad enough that I could work in any field. The internship was a great experience (even though I dreaded it). It helped with me being able to get out there.

The majority of the nursing professors were very strong and I appreciated that many were pursing research in the nursing field. The program had an internship program that was very useful. When I entered the nursing field, I felt very prepared.

I was able to start the nursing program the semester after getting accepted (didn't have to wait for a specific term); clinical experience was great...I look at student nurses now and feel like they aren't taking the best advantage of their time in clinicals‐‐I felt like my instructors made sure that we participated actively. The nursing externship was also highly beneficial, too!

I feel that my education at MU was comprehensive and prepared me well for the career path I chose (nursing). I also felt that the faculty took excellent measures to prepare me for the national credentialing examination to become certified as a registered nurse (NCLEX).

What aspects of your MU education needed the most improvement? Arts and Sciences
None. I feel that it was exactly the environment I wanted, which was exactly what it claims to be.
MU is really trying to do what the institution supposed to do for its people surrounding it; that is faculty, students, and staff.
Job finding
Fashion Merchandise program needs improvement in making sure the graduates of this program have an understanding and mentor in finding jobs in the related field. I felt that the program needs to be able to have students compete with FIT, Parsons and etc fashion institutes who all are competing in the same industry. Needs more of the business side, factories and etc. We need to be realistic in finding fashion jobs for our graduates.

Because the school is small, there's excuse not to have more personalized education, specifically when it comes to projects, and most importantly, within the English department, more encouragement and time ought to be spent on helping students with personal projects that take them beyond the general objectives of a classroom setting. Academic requirements are confusing with all the "cores" and what classes qualify and which don't. If you get it wrong, even by one class, you're screwed. Also, important classes for major are only offered once a year and at one time. Makes it hard to get everything done without dragging out your time in college.

The undergraduate IT program needs more hands‐on technical training. I had to wait til the last semester of my graduate program to take the technical class which should be offered in undergraduate studies (IT 670). This would make the program more appealing.

I was very upset that Marymount charged me for my own internship. That's ridiculous, nobody does it. I felt robbed.
I think my personal weakness is oral communication. I think everyone hates to present and to just throw students upstage to present research topics is like throwing a student into a pool who doesn't know how to swim. I think one‐to‐one meetings or appointments with an advisor every semester or every class that has a presentation listed in the syllabus would be a good idea. That way, students can have professional feedback before their really on the stage.

There are a few teachers that I really do not understand how they are teaching. This really lowered my view of the school because I felt like MU would hire anyone and accept anyone. Parking. Seating. Class arrangement.
The social aspect suffered for me. When i first came, I was the only upperclassman stuck in a dorm of freshmen. I was older than my RA. That affected how I participated socially and did not find a social circle to hang out with until the next year. There needs to be better consideration for that.

The placement of our internships during our last semester was very unorganized, and we felt we had little choice in where we were placed. The internship was one of the best things about the program and very important to our careers and networking. We would have all liked more control.

The HESI was tough! But passed NCLEX the first time!!
The cost was the most devastating part of the education. Organization of the program needed improvement.

Since working in the nursing field and working with new graduate nurses, I feel I didn't receive the same clinical experiences or sim labs that other new nurses did. I started in the ICU directly after graduating and had never even placed a foley in a patient during nursing school. I would recommend sim labs or more hands on experiences.
Preceptorship. Difficult to get a position in an area where you have interest, little guidance. My preceptor left for a 6 week vacation 2 weeks into my preceptorship, so I spent most of my time assisting the PCAs. I learned more as an ER technician (my job during school).

Marymount needs to do a better job with labs. Also, the HESI is ridiculous and not necessary. There is no correlation to the NCLEX (which I passed the first time). MU also needs to do a better job at recruiting professors and clinical instructors. With the exception of a few, the teaching was sub‐par.

I think the test at the end of the online program needs to be reevaluated. Many online nursing students have worked in their speciality fields for years. They do not remember all the details from Pysch, OB, or PEDIATRICS. These sections were not reviewed in the online program ; however, the expectation is to take a comprehensive test at the end. I do not agree with this theory, It causes increased stress upon the student. If a student has passed the boards why do they need to retake this course when obtaining their BSN? Many schools do not require this testing at graduation.

I think the education itself was excellent. It is very pricey, though. I accumulated a lot of student loan debt because I was considered a "grad" student in the 2nd Degree Accelerated BAN program‐ and was ineligible for grants from the state/federal government. I don't think that is really fair and we shouldn't be punished for wanting to better ourselves.
I don't have any complaints.
Curriculum
Courses without clinical components were poorly taught by poorly prepared professors. School of health administration was inaccessible and unwelcoming to student suggestions and opinions. General disorganization and commitment to last‐minute communication made finding out even basic logistical information a challenge. Id say about 60% of my professors were unprepared and below average. The 40% who were prepared and above average were phenomenal.
Cost.
Big range of quality in staff hired to lead nursing clinicals in hospital rotations. Need to have more stringent requirements for these positions.
Better preparation and more resources with the license registration/NCLEX registration.
Better communication between staff and students.

Marymount was a great choice for me. I enjoyed the four years I spent there.
Marymount gave me an excellent education for the Interior Design field. I wish there had been classes/courses offered about FFE specifications and how to get involved with probono or humanitarian/social impact projects.
In hindsight, if I could do my education over; I would have selected a college or university that takes a more serious and professional approach regarding a student's education over what Marymount University offered.
I so enjoyed my experience at MU; I would love to come back as a professional one day!
I believe MU is an outstanding school; I feel the Fashion Merchandise Program needs a facelift! We need more experience and present day Professors/Teachers who can teach, educate and mentor students on the trials and tribulations of the fashion industry. Cover the whole spectrum from the USA to overseas.

Health Professions The woman who works at Lynn Uniforms (the place nursing students are recommended to go for
nursing uniforms and supplies) is rude and tells students they must buy supplies they don't need. I would not recommend that place to ANYONE!

Forensic Psychology is not a widely available program and I feel the one at MU was very strong. The counseling program is CACREP accredited, which has proven to be very beneficial.

Most of the physical therapy staff professors were excellent, all of them were at least good. I appreciated the opportunity to work as a graduate assistant in the chemistry department while I was a physical therapy student. Marymount's physical therapy program does a yearly study abroad to Costa Rica which is an excellent experience.
The faculty was very understanding and approachable. The set up of clinical rotations while taking specific classes (ortho rotation while taking ortho classes, etc).
The health promotion program at MU broadened my perspective as to what the field included and the opportunities that were available. The nursing research and epidemiology class were particularly helpful in this.
There were a few excellent professors who knew how to teach and allow for learning and application.
What aspects of your MU education needed the most improvement? Arts and Sciences
A focus on objectives and goals, reducing the weight of opinions when it comes to papers/projects/etc. There were times when papers were changed between drafts to expound on what commentary asked for, just for the grade to turn out worse for doing precisely that. That, and working on the slight fear of the sciences/math that seemed to crop up from time to time. The department needs to reassert its title as Arts and Sciences, as both sides can find a synergy from building on the information from the other. Cultural exchange and exploration going hand‐in‐hand with trade and financial exchanges, etc.
I would say helping older, returning students get up to date on the latest technology. One cannot assume that every student is proficient in this area. Also, the library is too small and I had to use ILL constantly or go to other libraries.

Alumni Development (networking job opportunities) biggest regret to not staying at GWU is power of alumni network . They take care of each other. Privileged to go to GWU alumni event at annual ACHE meeting (we don't exhibit, have etworking events, or any other presence) and gt more job prospects in one hour than I got in 2+ years at Marymount!
Deliverables for classes. Some professors did very little in the way of homework while others had us do great amounts of homework.
Internship opportunities; some of the HCM courses need more structure (at least from when I was a student).
More MBA class offerings at Reston
My biggest complaint about the Marymount MBA program is‐‐ Some of the professors I encountered at Marymount were totally not capable of teaching MBA level classes. In at least 3 classes, I felt like I would have been better off just reading the book...as the professor did not add any value, just consumed time and money. On the other hand, some of the professors were top notch...It does the University (and the students) a tremendous injustice to employ unqualified professors; you really should read the student surveys furnished at the end of each class. For example, I did not learn a thing in my quantitative methods class...which is a very important skill I feel I have been cheated out of the opportunity to further hone.

Ballston Campus facilities are terrible. A urinal in a men's room was broken for 18 months. And parking is woefully inadequate.
Career Development. When I was there, the office listened very little to what I said and pushed me into an internship because it was the first they pulled out, when it had nothing to do with the area I wanted to go into. It also only informed us of job opportunities for those who had 5‐10 years experience in the field which, being students, most of us didn't have. It was really frustrating to have a department that is created to assist the students that didn't listen and didn't put out information applicable to the audience.
Far to expensive for a piece of paper and required fluff online courses with zero value.
I don't think we got much help getting jobs in the public schools. We had no job fairs and were only informed of the Catholic Job fair. That is only small percentage of the jobs. I really think their should be information about all the county job fairs sent to MU students. Students should be given a list of possible questions that will be asked. Have some suggestions when filling out the application. I also didn't have a good scope and sequence project. No real good templates where given. I think a few templates given to students would really help them in their future career . I feel like MU could do a lot more to support students in their job search.
I feel like there was little to no student engagement. Before _____ passed she would work very hard to put students in touch with professionals and organizations (e.g. Threat Professionals) which made me feel very involved in the professional arena. I felt that connectivity disappeared after her.
I felt like I was trying very hard, and getting a lot out of my time there, and getting good grades. But, other students would turn in poor work and do just as well as me (in terms of grades). Some education courses didn't seem well planned (Research, Social Studies). Professors seemed disconnected from students/class.

I had a teacher or two that didn't seem to be all that engaged.
I only attended Marymount for graduate school, and I thought everything about my program (school counseling) was so helpful, informative, and perfect for preparing me for the real world.
I still regret that I had _____ in Criminal Behavior, as this could and should have been one of the highlight classes, but she really ruined it. My advisors chamged about every year, I wish I had had someone with a clear concept.
I understand that when I was in this program it was still fairly new, so I can give some leeway to the academic failures I encountered. However, 3 issues I have still bug me to this day! 1) Some of the 'teachers' that were used in a few of the classes were completely wrong for the job in that they lacked education, training, and understanding of the topic they were teaching. 2) The academic advising/counseling provided was utterly lacking and unacceptable! Due to lack of information provided me I was left with almost no options by way of an internship, which is imperative in finding future employment. I did enjoy my internship, but it did not provide me with any info or opportunity for said employment. 2) I'm appalled at the lack of guidance for those of us seeking a career in criminology and law enforcement. To this day I have yet to find and acquire a position in my field due to lack of experience and guidance.

My advisor, _____, had very little knowledge of the course offering system and several time advised me incorrectly on which classes I should take and when. I almost had to attend Marymount for several extra semesters because he either didn't take the time to ready my academic road map or when he did read it he didn't bother finding out if the classes I intended to take were available when I intended to take them. He basically just said it looked ok and I shouldn't have a problem getting through my program with the road map I had planned out. He also made a mistake when filling paper work that was required for my teaching license causing it at first to be denied. Basically, he ruined what had otherwise been a positive experience at MU.

Not being from the area finding an internship was somewhat difficult, but also allowed me the experience of job seeking in a new area. As a graduate student it was easy to miss the other benefits of MU like intramural sports and activities.

The administration‐‐ I was told in my first semester, BY MY ASSIGNED ACADEMIC ADVISOR, that she was retiring soon and would not be able to advise me in any meaningful way (this after trying to track her down, via multiple emails, and then telephone calls). She told me to make relationships with other members of the staff. It took her 6 months to retire, and in the meantime, I was not able to be reassigned to another advisor. It was ludicrous. I was in a counseling program, and it didn't seem like anyone in the administration wanted to help me figure out the ropes. It also seemed like the advisors in general hadn't been told anything about the curriculum; they all seemed to be flying by the seat of their pants.
The Ballston facility could use an update as many aspects of the classroom are old.

The relationship between the PDS program and FCPS was difficult to navigate. Student teaching was more painful than it needed to be, largely because of a mismatch between time and realistic expectations for all parties.
The technology course was the most ridiculous waste of time ever! Thankfully, I already was competent.

Very very few of the classes offered on the degree plan were actually offered during my tenure. Basically felt like MU was enticing people to attend by saying they had all of these class opportunities when in reality, there were few. Had to scramble to graduate in time because of this, which was unbelievably frustrating, especially because I was so interested in those classes that were never offered.Need more teachers. Need teachers who actually know the subject material ‐ for my stats class, I ended up teaching most of the time because the professor himself clearly didn't know the material, and wasn't even in the psych department. WAY overpriced. I would never pay that much money for an education lacking in opportunities and MU doesn't stand out amongst any other institution available. In general, a very poor experience.

Getting rid of worthless professors like _____ before she completely destroyed my interest in Health Education. Lucky for me another professor stepped in. I will never forget the horrible horrible class I had to endure with her. I really hope she has been removed from your faculty. She belongs in a lab doing resarch not teaching fundamentals of health education.
The physical therapy department could use a stronger anatomy department ‐ they currently use the cadaver lab at GWU which is fairly cumbersome, but I did appreciate the access to the cadaver lab and the opportunity to dissect.

Caliber/professional pedigree of students was low. Some strong professors, but not many. If I could do it over, would have attended Georgetown or GWU.
I can't say enough good things about the Human Resource Management professors for the masters programs. It's been a while since I graduated, but they made a real impact on me.
I don't regret the stress and time requirements of attending school FT and work. I learned a lot and met a lot of great people.
I enjoyed my time at MU.
I keep getting letters that ask me to apply to MU, which I find very irritating. It feels as though my degree did matter. Why contribute more if it as if I did not already attend?
I would recommend supervising the quality of the class content better for contract teachers that are brought in from the professional world to teach MBA level classes. The vast majority of the full‐time Marymount teaching staff I encountered are fine teachers and know their subject material well...it's the "professionals" brought in to teach you need to keep your eye on.
Location in Arlington, VA was a good commute.

After completing program, I hand carried a note, asking for some advice, but I received no response. That left a bad taste in my mouth.
Graduation requirements should all be in one place on the website. I cannot tell you how infuriating it was to use the page marked "Program Requirements" (http://www.marymount.edu/academics/programs/cmhc/programReq.aspx) and then find out at the last minute that these weren't all of my program's requirements. (It doesn't mention anything about a research requirement). I nearly had to stay an extra semester to finish. I am a long‐term planner, and this really didn't sit well with me.
I am glad that I had the opportunity to earn my degree at Marymount ‐ I was supported in doing so both by staff and faculty.
I loved my program‐ everything from the classes, to the teachers, to the experiences.
I'm glad I went to MU. I wish you had add on endorsement programs so I could get additional certification in ESL without starting from square one. I will get it, and someone will get my money. I'd rather go back to Marymount and use the courses I already took to get that degree, but I don't think MU has anything set up for that. I would also be interested if you had a Reading Specialist program. My teacher _____ was such a great teacher. I think if she was leading the program it would be an fantastic program. She is an amazing teacher I know with her leadership I would learn a lot or relevant information.
Marymount is a faith‐based school. At the Reston campus, I didn't get a sense of that at all.

I wish MU would embrace a tobacco free campus policy. I have very sensitive lungs, and I often entered the Ballston campus holding my breath to avoid inhaling the cigarette smoke of several students outside the building smoking. MU for the most part does a great job with keeping up with the times, but they are behind on this one ‐ especially since we now know so much about the harmful effects of second‐hand smoke.
