For Allen Edmonds’ 90th Anniversary last year, we invited customers to share stories about their experiences in their Allen Edmonds shoes. We published 90 of them in a book that we called simply:

“90 Stories for 90 Years.” We gave the book to our employees, suppliers, business partners and other VIPs at our big celebration party in October, which included a private concert of great American music by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. It was a memorable evening.

Many of the stories in the book were reflections of how Allen Edmonds shoes were at the center of touching father-son experiences. It’s a theme we hear often —

“I first learned about the importance of good shoes and about Allen Edmonds from my dad. He never wore anything else….” A few of the stories from that book are included in this catalog. I hope you enjoy reading them and that they make you think

of your own family and stories. If they do, we’d love to hear from you.

As I write this note in my office at home, I’m surrounded by pictures of my own four kids at younger ages. The oldest is now older than her mother and I were when we were married (exactly 30 years ago this week) — so my overwhelming thoughts are about how fast time flies and how precious family time has been. I don’t pine away for high school or college days, I wouldn’t want to start my career over again — but what I wouldn’t give to have a chance to have our kids young again and to do it all with them once more. There’s an almost 20-year-old picture here of my dad and me at our last Father-Son Tournament at the golf club together, too. Wow…

Growing up in my family there were two things the men bonded over: golf and Allen Edmonds. not necessarily in that order. My family hails from Columbus, Ohio, the proud home of arguably the greatest golfer of all time, Jack nicklaus. Inspired by the Golden Bear, my brother and I were brought up on the golf course. To this day, there is nothing better than hitting the links with my dad and my brother.

One of my earliest memories is playing on a local course with my dad. His name is Avrom and mine is Eyton. not the most common or easy-to-pronounce names, I know. When we were paired with another twosome, my father decided to make it easy on our new friends by giving us easier

to pronounce names. He introduced himself as Allen and me as Edmond. As a seven- year-old, I had no idea where he came up with the names. nonetheless, it became a long running joke in our family.

When my dad bought me my first pair of Park Avenues, the significance of the two names became very clear. Allen Edmonds has been a constant side plot in the story of my adult life. Through graduations, job interviews, and weddings, Allen Edmonds has been there with me. If you asked me which suit or tie I had worn at the many milestones in life, I would have no idea. But if you ask which pair of Allen Edmonds I was wearing, I could tell you in a heartbeat.

It was a Sunday night ritual — watching The Ed Sullivan Show. In the 1950s, the depth and breadth of television shows were minuscule when compared to today. Ed Sullivan showcased numerous entertainers of the time. Among my early favorites were Topo Gigio, Elvis Presley, assorted plate spinners from Europe and, of course, the Beatles and the rolling Stones. Also important to me was that the Sullivan show was the launching point of many African American entertainers as well. Among the dozen who were guests of Sullivan were James Brown, lou rawls, Gladys Knight, The 5th Dimension, the Supremes, and ray Charles.

For me, the Sunday Sullivan show stood out for another reason. Inextricably coupled to the show was the “opportunity” to shine my shoes. My father, a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and Korea, insisted that school shoes were to be shined and readied for the week. After teaching my disinterested older brother and me the many facets of a great shine, he sat with us every

Sunday night to make sure the weekly task was done right.

As I began my career in education as a classroom teacher, the training stuck with me. My dad had always stressed the importance of good grooming and a good shine, and I continued the practice.

My career goal was always to become a school superintendent. With that in mind, I remembered some of my dad’s words of advice: “Always dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” My Park Avenues were part of that. A colleague and friend of mine frequently referred to them as my

“superintendent shoes.”

Eventually, I wore real “superintendent shoes” on a daily basis. During my career I counted the seven pairs I owned as the most comfortable and best-looking shoes on the market. The Marine Corps, Ed Sullivan, Allen Edmonds, and, of course, my father, made it all possible!

By age thirteen I had already grown to 6'1". like most tall teenagers, I was a clumsy, skinny kid. not only that, my shoe size matched my age, 13. Back in the early seventies, it was very hard to find a shoe that size and even harder to find one that looked good.

Every pair of shoes I tried on looked stretched out before me like water skis. The last thing a thirteen-year-old wants is to look uncool in front of is his peers. I was in trouble.

One of my dad’s friends suggested we go to Chernin’s Shoes here in Chicago. So my dad and I went to check it out and, of course, I thought, “Here we go again, more ugly- looking shoes.” Much to my surprise, the sales rep brought out three very nice looking pairs of Allen Edmonds. I was elated that I too could now have some cool- looking shoes. After hearing me complain

for years, I think my dad was more excited than I was.

Fearing I would never have the opportunity to buy cool shoes again, I convinced my dad to buy all three pairs. I couldn’t wait to wear my new shoes to school the next day. My father kept telling me they had better last through high school. It made me a little nervous because I had four years to go. In the end, they lasted the full four years and long after, because I protected them with my life. I cleaned them each and every day and made sure to protect them from the elements.

Today I own several pairs of Allen Edmonds shoes for casual, business and, of course, for golf. The lesson I learned at thirteen had stuck with me all these years! It’s all about the shoes.
