    Division J!

    2013

    Dear District 33,

Toastmasters International, Where Leaders Are Made!

I hope you feel a sense of pride as I do knowing that we have the

vehicle which empowers individuals to become better communicat

and leaders. In our club workshops, club members participate in a

self-paced program where they develop their own communication

leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.

District 33 is one of 88 districts throughout the world. Toastmasters International is in 12

countries, boasts a membership of 292,000 in 14,350 clubs. We envision to be the first-ch

provider of dynamic, high-value, experiential communication and leadership skills

    development.

Our District Mission is to build new clubs and support all clubs in achieving excellenceWhen we do this, we will touch more lives by giving the gift of Toastmasters and help ea

club member become a more effective communicator and leader.

Historically, from 1976-1992, our district had a 16 year run in a row of being distinguish

something very rarely achieved by any district, anytime. For the last 10 years, we have be

    distinguished only three times.

This past year, District 33 finished number 58 of 88 districts. During the Hall of Fame

proceedings at the Toastmasters International Annual Convention last month, I felt so

disappointed that, despite our hard work and efforts last year, District 33 was not recogni

as a successful district. Katy, Lorrie and I watched our neighbor districts 4 and 52 receiv

their awards. We are determined that our district will be among those recognized next ye

In addition, at our recent District Executive Council meeting, your district leaders decidetime we put our district back on top where it belongs. At this meeting, the leaders agreed

collectively, and I might add with great enthusiasm, to gain recognition in the Distinguish

District Program. Together, we look forward to again becoming one of the leading distric

the world and to get back to where we rightly belong!

Why should we care about this? We dont need to do it because we are not in competitiowith any district. We compete only with ourselves.

Do we want to be recognized among our peers? Yes, I believe we want to take pride in o

district and be proud of our accomplishment.

But, most importantly, Toastmasters membership gives all of us an opportunity to serve o

fellow man. By achieving this exceptional goal, we KNOW we have made a difference in

many peoples lives, and changed them for the better in magical ways.

This year our district is celebrating its 40th anniversary year. Join me by Embracing

Excellence and by working together with integrity, we can make this a year to rememb

I wish you much success on your Toastmasters journey.

    Things Are Buzzin In B!

Our re-formed Division B is off

to a good start. Were finalizing

    Officer Training, and weve

    emphasized another focus this year.

What you ask? Its an emphasis on

new Officers being trained on the ins-

    and-outs of individual Club practices

by their predecessors. I know, I know

this has always been an integral part

of training but in recent years we feel

it has slipped just a bit.

    Also training-related, we have

taken steps to re-focus members on the

many resources of the Club Leadership

Handbook and the back pages of the

    Competent Communicator Manual.

Theres a lot of helpful stuff there.

Weve also endeavored to make our

    Side Order Cookbook a

compilation of 23 documents meant to

    supplant the Handbook available.

    Short Takes: We also have

two new Clubs being launched, with a

third due to commence in January. Its

keeping a lot of folks busy . . . The

Division B Fall Contest is set for

October 26 at Poinsettia Pavilion in

Ventura. Will be good fun . . .

    Setting Realistic Goals

With respect to goals, should our

    ach extend beyond our grasp?

We would all agree that it good to

t high goals except when such

    oals become unrealistic.

    ach member that welcomes the

    pportunity to join a Toastmasters

ub comes with a grasp of certain

    tributes. Building upon existing

    tributes while providing for a

    arning experience for each

ember to achieve his or personal

oals as well as those of the Club

hould be an objective of every

    lub. However when the personal

oals of the members are not

igned in the same direction as

ose of the Club, distorted or

    nrealistic goals may result. In

    xtreme situations, even conflict

ay ensue. Members may come to

    erceive pressure from Club

aders to achieve goals outside of

eir reach. On the other hand, the

    lub may perceive it members

cking in enthusiasm.he important points to take awaye basically these. For Club goals

be realistic, first the goals of the

    embers must be aligned with

ose of the Club. Secondly, clubaders must receive the buy-in or

    ommitment of the members.

nally, since goals are dynamic, ere is the requirement for

    eriodic review by both club

    aders and members.

    Goal is to Empower Thru

s we embark upon the journey of

he phrase Knowledge is Power is

We is key in Division F! What do

mean? It means that together (d

    (4) Create Opportunities for Leadership

This four-fold vision will help keedivision strong and vibrant in the c

In addition to the vision, weve

    where We is KEY!!

Division E GovernorSandra Eacret, ACB, CL

    Engaging Excellence

In Division E, we are building on

    Districts motto of Embracing

Excellence by integrating it with our

    own motto: Engaging Excellence. Our

    Area Governors are exceptional leaders

who work cooperatively as a team to

achieve our goals. We are on track and

    aiming to achieve Presidents

    Distinguished Areas and Division at

this point, to support the District 33

    goal of Presidents Distinguished

    District.

Three new clubs are in the works: one

    (Carpinteria) is close to chartering,

needing a few more members; a

second, connected with VandenbergAFB, is in the beginning stages of

planning; and a third (an LGBT club) is

a bit further along than being just a

twinkle, as Katy Porter puts it.

We will work as closely as possible to

regenerate 5 clubs (5% of our club

base) which presently have 12 or fewer

    members. Club Coaches and Mentors

are being suggested as ways of

strengthening these clubs. AreaGovernors may also present Moments

of Truth to motivate club officers and

members to do all they can to bolster

their rosters. Our goal is to bring

membership in these clubs up to 20 by

    June 31st, 2014.

DISTRICT 33 TOASTMASTERS IS ABOUT BUILDING LEADERS

AT THE SUPPER CLUB, WE MAKE IT HAPPENEvery Toastmasters club has its own distinct personality, stemming not only from the interpersonal dynamics of its members, also from the unique way in which it implements its core mission and vision. Common to all clubs are the goals of developingmember communications and leadership skills, but unique to The Supper Club is the emphasis that it places on the cultivatioleadership ability through an expanded role played by the Toastmaster at each meeting.

The Supper Club holds a dinnertime meeting once a month at a different restaurant in East Ventura Countyarea. At eachmeeting, the role of the Toastmaster goes beyond that of the Toastmaster in most other clubs. The Supper Clubs Toastmasis responsible for the planning and conduct of the entire meeting, either by direct personal action or through delegation to othThe Toastmaster chooses the venue, selects the theme, arranges for a meeting flyer to be prepared and publicized, ensuresroles are assigned, and of course conducts the meeting. And at the end of the meeting, it is a tradition in the Supper Club ththe general evaluator comments not only on the meeting but on how well it was planned in advance and carried out.

In taking this all on, the Toastmaster doesnt have to go it all alone. Since the focus of the club is in learning by doing, there

many resources within the club membership to turn to for support. The majority of the club members have attained the level Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM). One is a Past District Governor and winner of the District Best Mentor award. Others arepast or present District, Division, and Area officers. All are always willing to freely share their experience and helpful advice.

With its focus on leadership, the Supper Club is still by no means lacking in communications training. With its flexible meetinformat custom-tailored by each months Toastmaster, the club provides an ideal setting for accommodating the delivery ofspecialty speeches, including the longer projects often found in advanced manuals.

Is planning and leading a meeting in the Supper Club a daunting undertaking? Not at all. Its exquisitelyfun and rewarding to take on the challenge and be successful. Remember that The Supper Club holdsa wealth of talent at mentoring and coaching. The club is rich with knowledge and experience yet warmwith friendliness. If youre looking to advance to the next level in your leadership ability and are willing toinvest in just one additional meeting per month, then The Supper Club is for you. Check our website, athttp://thesupperclub.toastmastersclubs.org/ to see where we meet each month and come join us! If you

want more information, feel free to contact The Supper Clubs VP Public Relations, Brenda OBrien,[email protected] call 805-217-8771.
