Dear Alumni & Friends, Muskingum has a rich history filled with tradition—none more significant than the Muskie spirit that results in the generosity and support we receive from you year after year. Your support inspires us to continue to enhance our teaching, our campus, and our community.

Your generosity and your vision are evident across the University. You have brought to fruition five new, state-of-the-art facilities—including the newly dedicated Louis O. Palmer Gallery. Currently, the library is undergoing a renovation and expansion that will be complete in 2015.

With this report, we gratefully acknowledge the

We celebrate the service and dedication of those Muskies who during the 2013-2014 year graciously shared their time and wisdom with our students as speakers at Convocation and Commence-ment. We also share with you the extraordinary alumni and faculty who were honored with the Distinguished Service Award, the Distinguished Faculty Award, and induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame.

The past year has been one of accomplishment accompanied by a deep sense of gratitude. With the ongoing success of our campus building initiatives, our students have access to classrooms and laboratories that

feature advanced technology to enhance their learning experience. With 65 academic majors at the undergrad-uate level and 15 graduate programs, Muskingum provides a rigorous academic environment where students and working professionals can expand their knowledge and broaden their perspectives to see and serve the world in new ways.

You have also established nine endowed chairs to ensure that superb teaching will remain a hallmark of our University, and you have helped to keep a Muskingum education affordable for our students. Your gifts allow us

to bring to life, every day, our timeless mission to educate students intellectually, spiritually, socially and physically.

We have provided a solid educational foundation that has developed generations of leaders, and with your ongoing support, there will be many more generations of Muskies in leadership roles for years to come.

PRASHANT GUPTA ’95

Prashant Gupta earned his Bache-lor of Arts degree summa cum laude from Musking-um, with majors in economics, accounting and German and a minor in comput-er science. He re-ceived the Fourth Year Award for

Superior Scholarship, and his name is engraved on the plaque of honors that hangs in Montgomery Hall outside of the President’s Office. He earned his Master of Science degree in accounting from the University of Virginia.

Mr. Gupta has been the chief financial officer of LAMB Partners, a Forbes 400 family enterprise, and partner and chief financial officer of DSC Quantitative Group, a privately held financial services firm providing quantitative alternative investments solutions to institu-tions, investment advisors, family enterprises and individuals. He has overseen all investment, accounting and taxation matters for both Chicago-based entities.

Prior to serving as CFO at LAMB Partners, Mr. Gupta was a senior manager with Ernst & Young, where he specialized in hedge funds, mutual funds and broker-deals, including serving in an international jurisdiction and overseeing more than 100 hedge funds varying in size from start-ups to multibillion-dollar funds.

He and his wife, Jennifer Pingledis ’96, reside in Wilmette, Illinois. They are the parents of Elainia, Erenia, Mira and Nikhil.

Dr. Bill P. Lovejoy is a distinguished alumnus and educator who has changed the lives of countless students in his classrooms and through his philan-thropy dedicated to teaching excellence.

While earning his Bachelor of Science degree in geology, he was a scholar athlete on the varsity football and baseball teams and he served as sports editor for the Black and Magenta.

Following his graduation from Muskingum, he completed a Master of Science degree in geology from the University of New Mexico in 1958, and a Doctor of

Philosophy degree in zoology from Oregon State Univer-sity in 1972. His early career as a geologist for Shell Oil Company took him to New Mexico, Texas and Oregon.

Dr. Lovejoy joined the faculty of Georgia Southern University where, during several decades as professor of bi-ology, he profoundly influenced generations of students and colleagues with his superb teaching and insightful research. He retired from Georgia Southern as professor emeritus.

His late wife, Martha Johnson Lovejoy, was a member of the Muskingum Class of 1952 and a well-loved and respected classroom teacher who shared her enthusiasm and love of learning with her elementary school students.

Dr. Lovejoy created the Bill and Martha Johnson Lovejoy Endowed Chair in Biology to ensure that superb teaching will forever remain a hallmark of the Muskingum heritage.

SYLVIA RAPP SABIA ’72

Sylvia Rapp Sabia is a native of rural Zelionople, Penn-sylvania, where she was raised in a strong United Presbyterian tradi-tion. Attending a Muskingum choir performance at her church led her to enroll following her

graduation from Seneca Valley High School.She earned her Muskingum Bachelor of Science degree

in biology magna cum laude. She served as president of Beta Beta Beta and was elected to the sophomore women’s honorary Cwens (now Lambda Sigma) and the Senior Women’s Honorary. She received the Fourth Year Award for Superior Scholarship, and her name is engraved on the plaque of honors that hangs in Montgomery Hall outside

the President’s Office. She was an active participant in many aspects of campus and residence hall life.

Ms. Rapp Sabia earned her Master of Physical Therapy degree from Duke University. She became the first full-time physical therapist at Highlands Medical Center/Jackson County Hospital in Scottsboro, Alabama, where she enjoyed a distinguished 32-year career before retiring in 2005.

She continues to serve others through her dedicated leadership in the Scottsboro Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where she has contributed her time and talents as a deacon, elder, assistant organist, Chancel Choir member and director of three handbell choirs. She expresses her lifelong love of sacred music as a vocalist, pianist, organist and handbell player, and her hobbies include birding, crafting, scrapbooking and baking.

She is married to Arthur A. Sabia, Jr., a civil engineer and graduate of the Polytechnic Institute of New York University. They reside in Scottsboro and are the parents of Susan Eliz-abeth Sabia, who currently attends the University of Mon-tevallo (Montevallo, Alabama), majoring in speech pathology.

Dennis D. Grant is a distinguished alumnus, employ-ment attorney, educator and Muskingum Uni-versity trustee, who has changed count-less lives through his dedication to excellence.

As an attorney with Bailey Cavalieri LLC, Mr. Grant focuses his practice on labor and employment law. Highly respected in his field, he is a frequent and sought-after presenter for legal professional development seminars, and he has taught labor and employment law for The Ohio State University and for Capital University’s Paralegal Institute. Mr. Grant has received multiple recognitions by his peers, including as a Best Lawyer in America, Ohio Super Lawyer, and Ohio Top Lawyer. He has twice been named the Profes-

sional of the Year in Labor and Employment Law.Mr. Grant has served on the Muskingum Univer-

sity Board of Trustees since 1972. He is a member of the Board’s Executive Committee, currently serving as secretary and previously as vice chair. His leadership has had a profound impact on the University, helping shape Muskingum for the future and impacting the lives of generations and generations of students. He was a 2012 recipient of a Muskingum Distinguished Service Award.

An enthusiastic outdoorsman, Mr. Grant shares his skills in hunting, fishing, and trap and skeet shooting as a hunter education instructor. He has served as secretary and a director of the Ohio Hunter & Trapper Education Instructor Association.

Mr. Grant earned his Muskingum Bachelor of Arts degree in history cum laude and his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan Law School (Ann Arbor, Michigan). He and his wife, Martha Brouwer Grant ’62, reside in Columbus, Ohio. They are the parents of Craig Grant, Wendi S. Bootes and Doug Grant.

ESTABLISHING LANDMARKS

WILLIAM F. ACCORSI ’54William F. Accorsi has enriched the lives of others through his acclaimed work as an artist and author/illus-trator. His work appears in museum exhibitions, galleries and private collections across the U.S. and abroad. He is the only artist to have been awarded

two solo exhibitions at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City.

Mr. Accorsi’s extraordinary work—known for its “great sense of play”—encompasses sculpture, painting and draw-ing. His three-dimensional pieces incorporate materials such as wood, wire, beads, buttons and other found objects. The Maine Public Broadcasting Network documentary, His Own Master: The Art of William Accorsi ( Jan Cannon Films), follows Accorsi at work in his studio.

Mr. Accorsi is the author/illustrator of two monographs, Toy Sculpture and Accorsi Puzzles, and eight children’s books. Known for their interactive puzzles and colorful tactile objects, his highly engaging children’s books have earned many awards, including Parent’s Choice, and have been translated into multiple languages. Mr. Accorsi earned a Bachelor of Science degree in edu-cation. He taught for seven years before devoting his career to art and writing. He lives in Woodstock, New York.

LAURA KLEMA HILL ’74Dr. Laura Klema Hill is a leading clinician, scholar and educator who has dedicated her career to serving others as a specialist in eating disorder education, prevention, treatment and research. She is the founder, president, CEO and chief clinical officer of The Center for Balanced Living, a non-profit clinic in Worthington, Ohio. Dr. Hill oversees the center’s patient care offerings and leads the center’s ongoing research initiatives on integrating neurobiological research into new standards of patient

and family care. She also serves as clinical assistant professor of the Department of Psychiatry in the College of Medicine of The Ohio State University.

Dr. Hill is the lead author of the Family Eating Disorder Manual (2012), and

her articles regularly appear in professional journals. She has shared her work through more than 750 national and international conference presentations, is a founding member of the Academy for Eating Disorders, and the 2011 recipient of the National Eating Disorder Associa-tion’s Lori Irving Award for Excellence in Eating Disor-der Prevention and Awareness. Active in her community, Dr. Hill has chaired the United Way’s Health Impact Council and served on the Healthy and Fit Task Force.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Muskingum, a Master of Education degree in counseling from Wichita State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in counseling from Kansas State University. Dr. Hill and her husband, Nicholas, live in Granville, Ohio. They have one child.

MARSHALL C. PHELPS, JR. ’66Marshall C. Phelps, Jr.’s expertise in intellectual property strategy has shaped economic development, entrepreneur-ship and innovation worldwide. As corporate vice president for intellectual property and licensing at Microsoft Cor-

poration, he played a leading role in the firm’s emergence as one of the world’s largest intellec-tual property companies, with over 60,000 pat-ents, extensive copyright holdings and numerous trademarks. Previously, as corporate vice president at IBM, he managed a portfolio of over 40,000

intellectual holdings and transformed a costly overhead function into a $2 billion annual profit center. Mr. Phelps currently is an executive consultant and CEO of Article One Partners, the world’s largest patent research community.

His book, Burning the Ships: Intellectual Property and the Transformation of Microsoft (2009), is an authoritative source on transforming corporate culture through intellectual property strategy. He has served as a visiting professor at Cornell University, Duke University, the University of North Carolina and the University of California at Berkeley.

An inaugural inductee of the Intellectual Property Hall of Fame, Mr. Phelps is an advisor to the National Academy of Science and a member of the board of directors of multiple corporations. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude from Muskingum, a Master of Science degree in advanced management from Stanford Graduate School of Business, and a Juris Doctor degree from Cornell University School of Law. He was honored with a Muskingum University Doctor of Humane Letters degree in 2011. Mr. Phelps and his wife, Eileen, live in New Canaan, Connecticut. They have two children.

WILEY W. (CHIP) SOUBA, JR. ’75Dr. Wiley W. (Chip) Souba, Jr.’s career in medicine, science and education has been distinguished by his academic ex-cellence and educational vision. His innovative approaches to leadership development have helped transform physician education and academic medical center administration.

He is the vice president for health affairs and dean of the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, where he also holds faculty appointments as professor of surgery and professor of business administration in the Tuck School of Business. Previously, he served as dean of medicine at The Ohio State University and on the medical school faculties at Penn State University College of Medicine, Harvard

Medical School and the University of Florida College of Medicine.

A prolific author, Dr. Souba has published three books and nearly 500 scientific articles, abstracts, papers and book chapters. He has also served as editorial chair of the Journal of the American College

of Surgeons’ and as co-editor of the Journal of Surgical Research. He has received numerous honors and awards for his achievements, including an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Muskingum University.

Dr. Souba graduated summa cum laude from Muskingum with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. He earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Texas Medical School Houston, a Doctor of Science degree in nutritional biochemistry from the Harvard School of Public Health and a Master of Business Administration degree from Boston University. He and his wife, Lynne, live in Hanover, New Hampshire. They have two children.

At Muskingum, Mr. Caldwell served on the Board of Trustees for nearly five decades. The University’s Philip and Betsey Caldwell Hall honors the extraordinary generosity of him and his wife, Betsey, both lifelong champions of excellence in higher education. In addition to a bachelor’s degree in economics from Muskingum, Mr. Caldwell held a Master of Business Administration from Harvard University. He died July 10, 2013 at the age of 93.

Mr. Warren joined General Mo-tors Corporation in 1955 as a teacher and conference leader at the General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan, and advanced to the position of vice president of industrial relations. In that role, he promoted joint pro-grams with UAW and was instru-mental in negotiating a breakthrough in cooperation with Japanese auto-makers, resulting in a joint operating agreement for a GM /Toyota au-tomotive factory in California. Mr. Warren also was part of the leader-ship team that developed the Saturn concept for GM, a new model for management and labor collaboration.

Throughout his life, Mr. Warren was dedicated to his church and com-munity. He was a member and clerk of session of the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church and a member of the General Assembly Council of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Mr. Warren also served as president of the Board of

Trustees of Muskingum and received the University’s Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Warren and his late wife, Jane Stepp Warren ’49, were generous philanthropists; their primary benefi-ciaries were the Presbyterian Church and organizations that served children. He held a bachelor’s degree from Muskingum and a master’s in education from the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Warren died October 11, 2013 at the age of 87.

Ms. Saunier will be remembered for her sharp wit, passion for wom-en’s rights, zest for life and love for Muskingum. She took great pride in knocking down barriers for wom-en and was one of the first female executives at the Mead Corporation in Dayton. The December 5, 1977 issue of Time magazine recognized her as an emerging leader in women’s rights with her impartial chairing of the fourth session of the landmark National Women’s Conference in Houston, Texas. She worked tire-

lessly in support of the Equal Rights Amendment and chaired the na-tional board of Planned Parenthood. Ms. Saunier spent 25 years in New York City, where she rose to man-aging partner at Sibson Consulting. She later returned to her Ohio roots to take a job in Governor Theodore “Ted” Strickland’s administration.

Ms. Saunier grew up just down the hill from Muskingum and was a Muskie through and through. She held a bachelor’s degree from Muskingum, a master’s degree from The Ohio State University, and completed the Program for Management Development at Harvard Business School. Saunier served on the Muskingum Board of Trustees for 13 years and was recognized with Muskingum’s Distinguished Service Award. She died November 1, 2013 at the age of 67, after a long, dignified battle with cancer. Her ashes are inurned in the Muskingum Columbarium.

Muskingum mourns the loss of three beloved alumni and former Trustees: Philip Caldwell ’40, Alfred S. Warren, Jr. ’48 and Anne Marshall Saunier ’68.

Mr. Caldwell earned a place in history as the first non-family mem-ber to head Ford Motor Company and by orchestrating one of the most dramatic, successful turnarounds in corporate history. He established Ford as the best-selling truck brand in the nation; introduced the Ford Taurus, which would become the best-selling car in America; and created such a strong labor-relations climate that he was named an honorary member of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union. In recognition of these contri-butions, Mr. Caldwell was included in Harvard Business School’s book, In Their Time: The Greatest Business Leaders of the Twentieth Century, and was inducted into the National Business Hall of Fame and the Automotive Hall of Fame.

Every year, Muskingum recognizes three faculty members for their outstanding contributions in teaching, scholarship and service. For 2013-2014, Distinguished Faculty Awards were presented to:

Dr. Shelley Amstutz-Szalay, Assistant Professor of Biology, William Oxley Thompson Award for Excellence in Teaching, for her commitment to her students and her investment in their success.“Dr. Amstutz-Szalay understands the needs of students and the challenges that they face, particularly in the sciences,” said Dr. James E. Callaghan, Vice President for Academic Affairs, who presented the awards. “In addition, she helped develop refined assessment tools to measure student learning and success. Her dedication to students not only is evident but also is genuinely sincere and grounded in solid assessment practices.”

Dr. Amstutz-Szalay joined the faculty in 2008. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Baldwin- Wallace College, her Master of Science degree from the University of Michigan and her doctoral degree from Walden University. The award for excellence in teaching is named in honor of an alumnus, class of 1878, whose career combined teaching, ministry and service. He went on to become one of the most influential presidents of The Ohio State University.

Dr. William T. Kerrigan, Arthur G. Cole and Eloise Barnes Cole Distinguished Professor of American History, William Rainey Harper Award for Outstanding Scholarship, including his authorship of Johnny Appleseed and the Ameri-can Orchard: A Cultural History. Published by the prestigious

Johns Hopkins University Press, Johnny Appleseed “is getting a lot of attention,” Dr. Callaghan said. “It has quickly become a selection of the History Book Club, and a portion of the final chapter was accepted as the lead essay by the highly regarded Antioch Review.”

Dr. Kerrigan joined the faculty in 1997. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Austin College, his Master of Arts degree from Texas-Christian University and his doctoral degree from the University of Michigan. The award for excellence in scholarship is named in honor of William Rainey Harper, Muskingum class of 1870, recognized as one of America’s greatest education innovators. Dr. Harper was the founding president of the University of Chicago.

Dr. Larry Normansell, Harry and Mary Evelyn Laurent Distinguished Professor of Psychology, Cora I. Orr Faculty Service Award for his broad spectrum of service to the university. “He is devoted to students and to student success,” Dr. Callaghan said. “From first-year students to upper-class and transfers and more, you can count on Dr. Normansell to step up and be available to not only assist but also to take a personal interest in the success of our students.”

Dr. Normansell joined the faculty in 1986. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern Illinois University and his Master of Arts and doctoral degrees from Bowling Green State University. The service award is named in honor of a faculty member and administrator who served Muskingum with devotion and distinction for four decades.

SUSTAINING THE VISION

Four alumni—Dan Wesson ’78, Adam Lescalleet ’03, Ryan Lescalleet ’03 and Nicole Blubaugh Moran ’05—are the 2013 inductees to the Muskingum Athletic Hall of Fame.

Dan Wesson, a football stand-out, was named to the First Team All-Ohio Athletic Conference as a defensive tackle in 1976 and 1977. He also was a member of the 1975 OAC Championship team. A three-year let-terman, Dan was captain of the 1977 squad. He was even more impressive on the wrestling mat. Dan was a four-year letterman, an NCAA National Qualifier in 1976 and team captain in 1976 and 1977. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in physical education and, after graduating, con-tinued to share his athletic talents with Muskingum. From 1979 through 1981 he served as assistant football coach and head wrestling coach. During that time, Dan built another impressive

wrestling track record, coaching 10 national qualifiers and five All-Amer-icans. His wrestling teams finished 20th, 27th and 33rd in the NCAA Division III National Tournaments in 1979, 1980 and 1981, respectively.

Adam Lescalleet was a three-time All-American and three-time All-OAC and All-Great Lakes Region honoree. He led the region in scoring his senior season and placed third in scoring as a sophomore. A three-time OAC Player of the Week, Adam finished third at the NCAA National Championship. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in business.

Ryan Lescalleet was a two-time All-American and three-time All-OAC and All-Great Lakes Region honoree. He also was a five-time OAC Player of the Week and five-time college tournament medalist winner. Ryan participated at the NCAA National Championship three times, finishing 19th in 2003. He

earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in business.

The 2003 men’s golf season will forever be considered the “Lescalleet legacy.” That year, the brothers led the Muskies to a perfect 20-0 regular sea-son, won tournament championships at the College of Wooster and Ohio Wesleyan University, and vaulted Muskingum to the top of the rank-ings in the Great Lakes Region.

First Team All-Central Region and three-time First Team All-OAC honoree. In 2005, she was named Academic All-OAC. Nicole was a key contributor on four OAC regular season championship and four OAC Tournament championship teams. From 2003-2005, she helped lead the nation-ally-ranked Muskies to three straight NCAA World Series appearances. Nicole also helped Muskingum set numerous records, including fewest losses in a season (5-2003), fewest runs allowed in a season (66-2003), most home runs by a team (48-2002), highest fielding percentage in a season (.975-2005) and most runs scored in a season (350-2005). Her personal statistics were equally impressive—a .408 career batting average, with 229 hits, 168 RBIs, 141 runs scored, 50 doubles and 31 home runs—and earned her recognition as the Barbara Steiner Outstanding Senior Female Athlete. Nicole holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education.

heading into the NCAA Champion-ship. The Fighting Muskies ended the season ranked 13th in the nation. They set school records for wins in a season (116) and regular season winning per-centage (.821). Nationally, the Muskies ranked third in Division III in fairway percentage (.614), fourth in greens in regulation (.539) and eighth in putts per green in regulation (1.984).
