IOWA WESLEYAN COLLEGE PHIL ANTHROPY REPORT | 2013-201402

When Governor Terry Branstad spoke this past fall on campus at the unveiling of the James Harlan statue, he said he “was impressed with the bold vision for Iowa Wesleyan for the future,” adding

that there is “a lot of can do attitude in Mount Pleasant.”

I’ve heard similar sentiments everywhere I go. People are starting to take note of what is happening here. I’m constantly reminded of the incredible history of accomplishment that has taken place at Iowa Wesleyan. Like it was in Harlan’s time, the Wesleyan community of investors, alumni, trustees, faculty, staff, students and friends continue to move the College forward. And, today, we are on the threshold of a new era in the life of Iowa Wesleyan. In this new annual report, you will see the names of the investors who believe in the College, and who are excited by the possibilities. For those of you who have invested through your generous gifts, you have our heartfelt thanks. Our community owes you an immense debt of gratitude, because it is you who hold the future of the College in your hands. Many of you have heard me talk about the vision for the College. In the coming months and beyond, you will read and hear about the Commission on the Future of Wesleyan. The Commission comprises a representative network of visionaries who are working diligently to formalize a blueprint for Wesleyan’s future. Ultimately our goal is to become the regional, comprehensive university for southeast Iowa and beyond. At its core, that means we will expand on the College’s original mission and seek new partnerships and new educational opportunities. We will be adaptive and agile; we will embrace evolving technology to deliver conferences, webinars, and online programs to all learners within the region. During this past year, we have established new partnerships in Mount Pleasant, Burlington, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Ottumwa, Macomb, Illinois and beyond, and we’ve begun to think of new delivery systems and how we can best address the educational needs of the region’s citizens and businesses. Today’s students are life-long learners seeking new certifications or online opportunities to improve their chances for a successful career and a meaningful life.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

We will build on our strengths in education, nursing, business, science, music and the arts, criminal justice and the behavioral sciences to provide the tools and education that both traditional and non-traditional students in southeast Iowa need and want. We are ready to respond and are open to new ideas. Will we abandon our historic residential four-year baccalaureate model? In a word: No. We will continue to be the Iowa Wesleyan that so many of you know and love. That historic mission provides us with the foundation from which to expand into new and emerging educational enterprises. This past year, you have watched as we have worked to stabilize and grow within a dynamic competitive environment. We’ve made some noteworthy progress and, yes, there is work yet to be done. We are stronger today than we have been in a long time, and I have every confidence that, with your continued support, we will turn some heads and show people what we can do with a strong vision and some enthusiastic investors. Thank you for your commitment to developing leaders and changing lives.

A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

On behalf of the Board of Trustees of Iowa Wesleyan, I would like to thank those of you who made a gift to the College this past fiscal year. Your support is so important to what we want to do going forward.

This past year we entered a season of stability and growth at Iowa Wesleyan. Today, we have a clear vision for the future; a vision that continues to develop leaders and change lives. Wesleyan springs from the collective wisdom of many of you and it will be your investments in the College that will help realize the vision to serve southeast Iowa as its only regional, comprehensive university.

I have been a part of the Wesleyan community for many years. I’ve had the privilege to know and work with many presidents, faculty, staff and alumni. We’ve all had the best interests of the College in mind. Today, I’m encouraged and energized by a new commitment to the success of Iowa Wesleyan.

When you give to Iowa Wesleyan, you are in fact saying: “Yes, I want to invest in this vision.”

So take a look at the names in this report. It contains the names of people like you, people who have signed on and said “Yes” to a prosperous future for Iowa Wesleyan.

My promise to you is that my colleagues on the board will work with the president to enliven the vision and put the strategic tools in place to see it become a reality. We welcome your involvement and thank you for your financial investment.

Sincerely,

Don WileyChairmanBoard of Trustees

WARREN AND JILL LUDVIGSEN— GIVING BACK AND GIVING THANKS

For Warren and Jill Ludvigsen philanthropy is in their DNA. Their lives are marked by an impressive history of volunteering and seeing what they can do to help others. Iowa Wesleyan has certainly benefitted from their

generosity, as has their church, blood drives, homeless shelters and laid-off professionals.

Their friends, co-workers and church family see Warren and Jill as kind-hearted, caring people, who feel blessed with rewarding lives, and who wish to help others find a semblance of solace when times turn difficult.

For Bryan Mincks ’71, who has known the Ludvigsen’s since they were students, Warren and Jill are role models for how alumni should be. “I’ve always said that Warren and Jill are the epitome of alumni at Iowa Wesleyan. They are dedicated to the College. They’ve given of themselves financially and with their time. Whenever there was an alumni event, Warren and Jill were there.”

Their Wesleyan story began Thanksgiving 1972. Warren was studying business and economics, while Jill gravitated toward home economics and business. They each stayed on campus during a Thanksgiving break and ran into each other in town. They started dating, and after graduation in 1974, married and moved to Wheaton, Illinois to start their post-Iowa Wesleyan lives. But as Warren puts it: “I will always be thankful I stayed on campus for Thanksgiving break.”

A guidance counselor at Pelham High School was familiar with Iowa Wesleyan and thought a smaller school with a more personalized education would be more suitable for Warren, who was a first-generation college student in his family. “The College was a perfect fit for me,” Warren said.

For her part, Jill was raised in Elmhurst, Illinois and graduated from high school in Geneva, Illinois, a suburban town of 20,000 nestled along the Fox River 45 minutes southwest of downtown Chicago. She found Iowa Wesleyan to be an agreeable mix of positives. “IWC attracted me because it was a small college, far enough away that I couldn’t go home every weekend, but not so far that it would be difficult or expensive to travel home.”

After graduation and getting married, they moved to Wheaton, Illinois. Warren pursued an MBA at Roosevelt University, while Jill worked in food service in the Chicago area. Wheaton has been their home for the past 40 years, including the time when Warren served as vice president of institutional advancement at Iowa Wesleyan for 15 months in 2009-2010. He would leave his Wheaton home each Monday morning at 3:30 a.m. for the four-and-a-half-hour commute to Mount Pleasant. Every Friday evening he’d return to Wheaton, and during the week, he lived in a small apartment on the square.

Both feel very strongly about investing in Iowa Wesleyan. “I had to pay my own way for my college education,” Warren said. “But because others were generous with their contributions and support, it afforded me the opportunity to attend Iowa Wesleyan.”

Jill has similar sentiments. “I believe Iowa Wesleyan was the best choice for me and I truly hope many more generations of college-bound students will have the opportunities that we have received. Giving financially is a small price to pay for everything we have received from our association with Iowa Wesleyan.”

A college romance has yielded a lifetime of generosity

Today, after years in the hospitality business, Jill is the executive director for Friends of Danada, a non-profit organization which supports the Forest Preserve District of Du Page County, a popular venue for weddings, corporate programs and fund-raising events. She recently celebrated her 20th year managing the staff and volunteers.

Warren is the vice president of sales and marketing for Regal Cutting Tools, a manufacturer of tap, drills and end mills with locations in Roscoe, Illinois and Loris, South Carolina. As part of his responsibilities, he travels frequently across the country and in recent years has made several trips to South Korea, China and Germany.

They both have cooked breakfast at a homeless shelter for 15 years. They both are active in their church, serving as ushers and

communion bread hosts. Jill makes all the baptismal banners and helps Warren maintain the landscaping.

Still, Wesleyan holds a particular attraction to them. It is where, after all, it all began. Warren wants friends of the College and alumni to think of the experiences that Wesleyan has offered

them. “Think of the people you met, the benefits you derived and make the dream possible for others. Always remember that the cost of a college education at Iowa Wesleyan is not entirely covered by the students. When we attended Iowa Wesleyan, there was

somebody we don’t know who helped make our experience possible.”

“GIVING FINANCIALLY IS A SMALL

ASSOCIATION WITH IOWA WESLEYAN.”

JOAN GERLING CALLS ON OTHERS TO RISE TO THE CHALLENGE

09

If I had grandchildren, I’d want to make sure they went to college,” Iowa Wesleyan alumnus Joan Gerling ’64 says. “That’s why I want to help. Anything I can do, I want to do.

That’s why we’re all here, to help each other.”

Joan, a former third grade-school teacher in Mediapolis, has helped many students at Iowa Wesleyan through her generous contributions over the years. In addition to the $100,000 endowed scholarship for education majors at Iowa Wesleyan, Gerling has been a regular donor to the Wesleyan Fund, and will be offering a $25,000 matching grant during the 2015 Spring Campaign. She also has supported several campus improvement projects, including the Chapel renovation and residence hall renovations. The plaza in front of the Chapel is named in honor of Joan and her late husband, Roy.

“Iowa Wesleyan has such a beautiful campus,” Joan says. “They take such wonderful care of the grounds. The chapel (renovations) are outstanding and the stained glass windows are beautiful.”

One of her favorite projects has been the recent residence hall renovations. Although Joan didn’t live in the residence halls while attending Iowa Wesleyan, she understands the importance to both current students and to prospective students.

“Residence hall life is so important,” Joan says. “I’m so proud of that (renovation).”

Joan was born and raised in Columbus Junction, graduating from high school there in 1943. She earned an education degree (which at that time was a two-year program) from Drake University. She returned to southeast Iowa, began teaching at Mediapolis, and married Roy in 1947. She had been teaching for several years when licensure requirements changed to a four-year degree. She began taking summer classes at Iowa Wesleyan while teaching during the school year.

“I didn’t get to know people” the way students who live in the residence halls do, she says. “That’s why I wanted to support the renovations.”

The Gerling’s farmed near Mediapolis, and later Carman. After several years of carpooling to get to summer classes, Joan graduated in 1964. She remembers that her last class was an art class taught on Saturday mornings, and one of her most memorable classes was a biology class with Dr. R.W. Poulter. “I learned an awful lot in that class. He was just outstanding,” she says.

Joan, who was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2013, from Iowa Wesleyan states, “I want to help as many as I can.” She and Roy had a son who died as a child, which inspires her to help other young people. “It makes me feel good that I can help other children go to school.”

Her own philosophy on giving is simple and to the point: “If you can help do something good for others, you should.”

“As long as I continue to live, I will continue to give.”

“I WANT TO HELP AS MANY AS I CAN...

IT MAKES ME FEEL GOOD THAT I

CAN HELP OTHER CHILDREN GO TO

SCHOOL... AS LONG AS I CONTINUE TO

LIVE, I WILL CONTINUE TO GIVE.”

AN ENDOWED LEGACY FOR TWO TEACHERS

Last spring, Gloria Lehmann established the Reverend Dr. Martin E. Lehmann & Gloria J. Niehaus Lehmann Endowed Scholarship for elementary education majors, almost 50 years to the day from when she graduated

from Iowa Wesleyan in 1964. “I just wanted someone to have an opportunity to become a teacher,” she said from her home in rural Sperry in southeast Iowa. “It was 50 years since I graduated, so it was the right time to invest in Iowa Wesleyan.”

Before his death in 2011 at the age of 96, Martin Lehmann had had a distinguished career as a clergyman and teacher, having served as a pastor for 20 years, including 12 years in Burlington, before becoming a professor of church history at Central Seminary in Fremont, Nebraska, and Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The year the couple married, Martin took a sabbatical from teaching that took the Lehmanns around the world to visit some 14 countries. Their journey began in Hawaii and included Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lampur, Indonesia, India, the Holy Lands, Greece, Austria, Germany (where they spent five months), France, England, then home to the United States. In addition to visiting historic church sites, Martin was conducting research on a German missionary who worked with cannibals in Sumatra.

To Gloria, it was a life-changing experience for someone who had never been out of the Midwest. “It was quite the thing being in areas where there was extreme poverty. You gain an appreciation for what we have in the United States.”

Gloria had been an elementary school teacher in Huron and the Mediapolis Community School District for 10 years before she began commuting with her brother to Iowa Wesleyan to complete a bachelor’s degree, building on a teaching certificate she received at what was then Burlington Junior College. “Iowa Wesleyan was close and had a good reputation,” she said. Following graduation, she taught mostly third and fourth grades, teaching everything except music. “My classes averaged between 15 and 28 kids, depending on the year,” she said.

The couple returned to the Sperry area in 1986 following Martin’s retirement. It was Gloria’s hometown and with Martin’s time in Burlington, the area felt like home. She has lived there since. Recently, she was on campus to establish the scholarship and meet with education students. “Teaching was common territory for us,” she said, so the scholarship felt a fitting legacy.

Gloria Lehmann sees opportunity to help others become educators

PAUL AND JOYCE DENNISON—ADVOCATES FOR A STRONG IOWA WESLEYAN

When he was a teenager in Knoxville, Iowa, Paul Dennison discovered the power of radio. He sweet-talked the management of KNIA AM into letting him have his own radio show, so

he could play rock and roll, and the resulting Top Tune Times convinced him that radio was his future. He’s never strayed from that certitude.

Following his graduation from the Brown Institute of Broadcasting in Minneapolis, he went to work at the Newton, Iowa radio station for eight years before he was approached by a former rival in the radio sales world, Frosty Mitchell, to consider launching a new FM station in Mount Pleasant. The year was 1977, and FM radio in Iowa was little more than elevator music. Paul, and his wife, Joyce, helped change the small community of

Mount Pleasant through the impact of its own radio station.

When it comes to Mount Pleasant opinion-leaders, one need look no further than Paul and Joyce Dennison. Not only is their radio station a Mount Pleasant institution, but they spend a lot of their personal time and treasure giving back to the community. They are also passionate advocates of Iowa Wesleyan. To hear their long-time general manager John Kuhens tell it, they are great people, who understand not only the importance of a strong radio station in the community, but a strong college, as well. “Mount Pleasant is a much better place because of Iowa Wesleyan,” Kuhens said. “And Paul and Joyce understand that the College makes Mount Pleasant a better place and when it comes right down to it, Iowa Wesleyan makes Mount Pleasant a bigger town than it is.” Paul and Joyce have 44 years of radio stories to share, but Paul remembers with fondness the weekend he and a young attorney named Tom Vilsack stayed on the air all weekend during a radiothon to raise money to build a new football stadium. It was the idea of the then future Iowa governor and Secretary of Agriculture. The results were better than either of them could have expected. “It was really something to have the high school football coach and superintendent of schools not being able to speak because they were crying as we had raised more than $600,000 to build the field,” Paul said. Today, Maple Leaf Stadium is still home to both Mount Pleasant High School and Iowa Wesleyan College.

Although Paul gets much of the attention because, as he puts it, he hasn’t been shy about personal and professional publicity, he feels that the limelight needs to shine on Joyce as well. “She really is the heart and detail of the group,” Paul said.

Still, the honors roll in. In January, the James Harlan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution named Joyce and Paul recipients of the 2014 Community Service Award. Recipients are chosen for having “contributed to their communities in an outstanding voluntary, heroic, civil or benevolent manner.” Being named “Citizens

Their radio station—KILJ—is a Mount Pleasant institution that has kept Mount Pleasant entertained and informed for more than four decades.

12

Page 15: 2013-2014 Philanthropy Report

IWC.EDU

of the Year” a few years ago also was a highlight. Paul has also been named Iowa Broadcaster of the Year, and Paul and Joyce have served as Henry County fundraising chairs for Iowa Wesleyan.

For her part, Joyce’s personal list of contributions to the Mount Pleasant community is formidable: T.T.T., P.E.O., Women’s Club, First United Methodist Church, the community theater, Midwest Old Threshers, and the Southeast Iowa Symphony to name just a few. “Being a part of helping our good small town is a rewarding reason for living,” Joyce said.

Joyce sees her work in the community, ultimately, as an expression of thoughtfulness. “Thoughtfulness was my mother’s greatest gift to me,” she said. That’s one of the reasons why she loves Responsible Social Involvement at Iowa Wesleyan. “RSI helps teach kids thoughtfulness and volunteerism.”

Paul, too, has had some recent honors. A few years ago, he was appointed by Governor Terry Branstad to serve on the Iowa Arts Council, a statewide office that is part of the Department of

Cultural Affairs. As part of his work with the department, he was among the key leaders of the effort to bring the statue of James Harlan to the Iowa Wesleyan campus. The statue was unveiled at a special ceremony last August. Paul’s colleagues on the council elected him president last year.

With all of their community accolades, both Joyce and Paul view Iowa Wesleyan as one of the community’s most important assets.

“People don’t realize how important Iowa Wesleyan is to this community,” Joyce said, with Paul adding: “I always put Wesleyan first in terms of economic and cultural impact.” He can’t imagine what Mount Pleasant would be like without the athletic, cultural and arts events that Iowa Wesleyan brings to town.

They both see the value of giving to the College and when

they have the opportunity, which is often, they encourage others to do likewise. “I grew up in a town without a college,” Joyce said. “I know that Iowa Wesleyan has a lot to offer, and we all need to do what we can to keep it strong.”

KILJ has had interns from day one, and Paul believes that the relationships forged benefit everyone—the students, the community and certainly the radio station. Michael Mendoza ’13, was able to complete an internship at KILJ during his senior year. “During that time he would do live sports shows with our sports department. These included results from IWC sporting events. In addition, he would bring coaches and athletes in for live interviews, giving listeners an insight into the Iowa Wesleyan sports teams and athletes,” Paul said.

“AND PAUL AND JOYCE UNDERSTAND

THAT THE COLLEGE MAKES MOUNT

PLEASANT A BETTER PLACE AND WHEN

IT COMES RIGHT DOWN TO IT, IOWA

WESLEYAN MAKES MOUNT PLEASANT A

BIGGER TOWN THAN IT IS.”

JURINE BORTON MOOREEMBRACES HER WESLEYAN HISTORY

For Jurine Borton Moore ’60, Iowa Wesleyan was a “right f it.” Not only was she able to achieve a double major in physical education and home economics, she was able to participate in a variety of campus and community

activities as well. Those experiences helped shape her decision to give back to Iowa Wesleyan in terms of time, talent and financial investment.

“I feel so blessed to have a degree from Iowa Wesleyan,” Moore says. “Iowa Wesleyan provided such a wide variety of learning opportunities and ways to be involved.” In addition to her classwork, Moore played basketball, was on the Courier news staff and was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She was also president of the IWC Home Ec Club and vice president of the Iowa College Home Ec Club.

“Being able to accomplish so much developed confidence as well as personal and leadership skills,” she said. “The diversity I experienced at IWC opened my desire to help all humanity and influenced my interest of expanding our family by having foster children.” In addition to their daughter, the Moores helped raise seven foster children.

Moore taught for 25 years and coached for 18 years. She has been active in ISU Extension work as well as serving as an Iowa Farm Mediator and business consultant. She also enjoys traveling throughout Iowa, the U.S. and foreign countries.

Her enthusiasm for IWC and for travel have combined with unique results. In 1995, Moore met and befriended Patrick L. Saisi ’95, then student body president, when she delivered a speech at the College’s annual Leadership Dinner. Saisi asked Moore to be

his parent at his graduation that spring, as his parents were unable to make the trip to Mount Pleasant from Kenya. Moore was happy to stand in. The two continued to correspond, and Moore was honored to travel to Africa herself in 1997 to attend Saisi’s wedding.

“I’ve traveled many places in the world, but indeed, that was some experience!” she said.

But the connection between Wesleyan and travel had an effect on Moore long before that. While getting ready for her first long vacation in 1966, Moore realized she needed to have a will and funeral arrangements. Aware of the positive influence IWC had on her, she chose to include the College in her will.

“I wanted to give back so others would have a chance to experience what I did at this wonderful educational institution!”

She has continued to give back to Iowa Wesleyan by serving on the Alumni Association Board of Directors and as a Class Representative. In 1992 she added the College to her planned giving through an irrevocable, paid-up insurance policy. As an alumna with an estate plan, Moore became a member of the IWC Heritage Club.

“All alumni should want to give back in their own way–with their time by helping with events or on a board; by donating annually or for special occasions; or by attending activities like Homecoming, at least every five years. Stay in touch! It’s always rewarding to share old friendships, make new friends and keep up with IWC.”

UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP LEADS TO RENOVATIONS OF STUDENT DINING HALLWelcome to Wesley’s Diner

At last fall’s ribbon cutting, the Iowa Wesleyan community unveiled a series of enhancements to the College’s dining hall. This underscored its commitment to improving spaces on campus for students.

The renovations, which totaled more than $140,000, were fueled by a unique partnership between the College, Sodexo—its food service vendor—and Iowa Wesleyan alumni. The genesis of the plan began with some early conversations in 2013, when a fund was announced to honor Carol Nemitz and her 50-year commitment to the College. The fund, eventually named the Carol Nemitz Fund for Student Enhancement, attracted participation among alumni. With interest gaining for renovating the campus dining hall, conversations began with Sodexo about joining with the College to provide capital improvements to the facility. With Sodexo’s investment and funds from the Nemitz fund, work on the dining hall began in earnest in the Spring of 2014. New flooring was laid, walls painted, seating replaced, stairway railing enhanced, murals installed, lighting improved and new branding and graphics were featured throughout the space. In addition, first floor enhancements were made in the Social Hall and post office.

“We were able to do much more by stretching the dollars and working with a unique partnership to enhance the student experience,” said Meg Richtman, vice president for development and alumni relations. Zachary Cronkite, student body president and a junior psychology major from Washington, Illinois, said at the ribbon-cutting: “I think (the renovations) are absolutely wonderful…It makes it a much warmer place for students and visitors. The area now allows students to relax and hangout outside the dining hall, too. The renovations in my opinion were great, and I’d give it a ten out of ten.”

Representing Sodexo at the ceremony were Russ Benischek, general manager; Carla Carlson, district manager; Dannie Crozier, general manager and district support; Alyssa Boruff, district marketing; and Judy Jessen, district human resources. Linda Buchanan, vice president for student development served as emcee, and President Steve Titus talked about the “Importance of student spaces and experiences.” A student competition was held to create a new name for the space. Kaitlyn Dirth ’16 from Burlington, won the competition with the name of Wesley’s Diner.

DEEPENING YOUR COMMITMENT THROUGH THE WESLEYAN FUND

This is an exciting time at Iowa Wesleyan College. We are embarking on a new era of philanthropy through our rebranded annual fund named – The Wesleyan Fund.

The rebranding process allowed us to examine the core values of the fund and expand the ways in which giving can be celebrated. This began with the creation of a brand for The Wesleyan Fund. The brand strives to highlight the historic legacy of Iowa Wesleyan by placing the cupola, which crowns the top of Old Main, as the visual centerpiece. ‘Stay bold.’ is the tagline that compliments the ‘Be bold.’ integrated marketing campaign for Admissions.

New initiatives to enhance participation in The Wesleyan Fund include a robust volunteer program, the return of a student phonathon program, personalized campaign outreach, and sharing donor stories of giving. Additionally, the launch of a new online giving platform makes the giving process, including the option of recurring gifts, seamless. All initiatives have the common goal of enhancing your philanthropic experience and increasing the opportunity to deepen your commitment to Iowa Wesleyan College.

Your gift to The Wesleyan Fund is critical to every student on campus. The impact of your gift makes the Wesleyan experience possible for students like Becca and Andrew (featured below). It allows them to study and thrive in a place that is helping them grow and inspiring them to ‘Be bold.’

We invite you to celebrate the bold spirit of Iowa Wesleyan College and ‘Stay bold.’ in your commitment through The Wesleyan Fund.
