BLUE MAN GROUP

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 8 P.M.SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2 P.M.

One of the most highly requested shows in IU Auditorium history is back by popular demand!

No one knows how to make a more inspired mess than Blue Man Group. Whether they’re beating on drums and generating a kaleidoscopic spray of airborne paint, or catching flying gumballs with their mouths and spewing the paint onto canvases, the bald-and-blue characters approach each messy, noisy enterprise with the expertise and determination of children. And the audience responds with unadulterated, uncomplicated, grin-inducing joy; with howls of laughter; with childlike wonder and delight. You might say that Blue Man Group is child’s play for adults.

At a Blue Man Group theatrical show there is something on the bill to fascinate and entertain everyone. It’s vaudeville for the twenty-first century: instead of an array of comedians and singers and monologists and dog acts and jugglers sharing a bill, the Blue Men—abetted by a few musicians—offer an array of wildly imaginative flights of fancy, ranging from primitive to sophisticated, in a variety show quite unlike any other.

But even when the audience is in a heightened state of exhilaration, the Blue Men are often teaching them something—even if the audience is unaware of it.

“The paint on the drums for us is a visual representation of the music,” says Puck Quinn, creative director of character development and appearances. “We want to create a visceral experience. We want you to feel it in your gut. That’s why we have as big a drum as we can find. Because that drum will literally vibrate your viscera, your guts will resonate.”

Paint and vibration aside, connecting to the audience and creating a community within the walls of the theater is what matters most to Blue Man Group.

People sitting in the front rows immediately feel a part of the proceedings, as they are given slickers to protect their clothes from paint and other possible splatterings. The Blue Men also make an enormous amount of eye contact with the audience, both from the stage and by interacting with them. Most famously, a woman from the audience is chosen to join them onstage for The Feast, and share in a repast of Twinkies.

“It’s all about the connection,” says co-founder Phil Stanton. “And we also wanted to make a statement about how important the live experience is. Even though technology has made it so that we don’t have to have that live experience, there’s something about our humanity that will always need it.”

DENNIS JAMES HOSTS HALLOWEEN

SATURDAYOCTOBER 26, 7:30 P.M.

The kitsch of silent film combines with the clamor of spooky sounds in this favorite IU Auditorium Halloween treat. Get ready for one of the most unique and family-friendly theatrical events around as IU alum Dennis James, along with fellow musician Mark Goldstein—together known as the Filmharmonia Duo—accompany the playfully eerie sci-fi silent film classic Aelita, Queen of Mars!

The duo has played for sold-out crowds and received numerous standing ovations across the globe for their unparalleled musical accompaniment, which combines pipe organ music with experimental electronic sound effects instrumentation. James, an Indiana University alumnus, will provide virtuosic accompaniment on the organ, and the pioneering 1919 Soviet musical instrument invention: the theremin. Goldstein further enhances the production with the buchla lightning wands, an electronic musical device that, in order to play properly, provides a show of its own—with Goldstein waving and dancing about the stage.

Aelita is the story of an engineer named Los, who, pursued for the murder of his wife, escapes to Mars on a flying machine of his own invention, accompanied by two unlikely companions: the detective investigating the murder and a good-hearted Red Army soldier. On Mars, Los falls in love with the planet’s ruler, but is also imprisoned, enslaved, and involved in a revolution. How will he escape back to Earth? What is to become of him and his companions?

Aelita launched Filmharmonia’s career accompanying silent films in 1991. Filmharmonia’s celebrated combination of traditional silent film scoring and authentic, period instrumental textures has consistently received critical praise and standing ovations at festive Aelita screenings worldwide. The film features fascinating sets and intriguing costumes designed in the Soviet Constructivist style by several of that avant garde movement’s most famous practitioners. The source music was selected from a published set of Soviet film cue music provided by Naum Kleiman of the Moscow Cinematheque.

From Singapore to Vienna to Salzburg, Filmharmonia’s compelling organ and eerie electronic music have fascinated audiences around the world. A critic raved, “I wasn’t sure how I was going to like the electronics, but the score was a mélange of Gounod’s melodies, Bach’s Passacaglia in C Minor, and wonderfully eerie sci-fi effects. I loved it!”

Dennis James exclaimed, “With the project being a glorious pioneering example of the sci-fi film genre, it will work quite well for a Halloween crowd—with rockets, space travel, Martians… who could ask for anything more?”

NASHVILLE SYMPHONY WITHBELA FLECK

WEDNESDAYOCTOBER 30, 8 P.M.

Get ready for one of the most unique and exciting classical performances to hit the Auditorium stage as the world-renowned Nashville Symphony is joined by the incomparable Béla Fleck this October.

Led by music director Giancarlo Guerrero, the Nashville Symphony has established an international profile with its innovative programming and steadily expanding discography. Although internationally renowned, Mr. Guerrero is no stranger to Bloomington or IU—having lent his talents as conductor of the IU Festival Orchestra three of the past four seasons. With the arrival of Mr. Guerrero to the Nashville Symphony in 2008, this 14-time Grammy nominated and seven-time Grammy Award-winning ensemble has continued its spectacular rise to prominence with an ambitious schedule of recordings, commissions, and world premieres—bolstered along the way by the Symphony’s music advisor and prestigious member of Indiana University’s own Jacob School of Music faculty: Leonard Slatkin.

This year, the Nashville Symphony is partnering with the groundbreaking and extraordinary banjo musician Béla Fleck to present one of the most unique pieces of orchestral music ever composed, Fleck’s own Concerto for Banjo and Orchestra (co-written with Béla’s longtime collaborative partner Edgar Meyer), which he premiered with the Nashville Symphony in 2003. A piece created, according to Fleck, “to explore the new possibilities of the banjo as a member of the orchestra, while respecting its roots in bluegrass and jazz.”

Béla Fleck is the most lauded banjo player in the world. Known for his passion, humor, and impressive skill, Béla has made a name for himself by placing banjo into unique and non-traditional settings, arrangements, and collaborations. A gloriously decorated musician, Béla is a 13-time Grammy Award winner, and has shared Grammy wins with Asleep at the Wheel, Alison Brown, and Edgar Meyer. His Grammy nominations (25 and counting) span more unique categories than any other musician in history—a range that includes country, pop, jazz, bluegrass, classical, folk, spoken word, composition, and arranging.

The Nashville Symphony always provides an orchestral performance that is exciting, captivating, and inspired. In addition to the Concerto for Banjo and Orchestra, the Symphony will be performing some of its most loved and highly lauded repertoire—including Joseph Schwantner’s “Chasing Light,” and Dvorák’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World. Classical music listeners from novice to aficionado are guaranteed to have an incredible evening of music and majesty.

DAVIDSEDARIS

THURSDAYNOVEMBER 7, 8 P.M.

Few authors could label book reading sessions as comedy and sell out at venues world wide, yet David Sedaris can, and comfortably holds his own against all the standups and talking heads on the fringe.

This November, master humor writer David Sedaris will bring his signature social satire back to IU Auditorium. The king of self-deprecating comedy, Sedaris uses his words to paint pictures of situations both familiar and ridiculous, mining everything from his upbringing in an eccentric Greek family to his odd jobs in the years before he started getting paid to write.

This performance comes on the heels of his newest book release: Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls, a collection of essays and other works released in April 2013 that follows in a long line of irreverent, self-deprecating, and highly-regarded literary releases. Experience live the hilarious brilliance that created the national bestsellers Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, When You Are Engulfed in Flames, and Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk, followed by an interactive Q&A session and book signing with the satirist himself!

Although now permanently residing in France, Sedaris travels widely for book tours and appearances, and never ceases to find inspiration everywhere: a foul-mouthed conversation between a polished, genteel-looking couple was the source for one essay, while trying to kick a lifelong smoking habit inspired another.

In addition to his literary selections and public appearances, 2013 saw the release of the first film adaptation of his work, C.O.G., which premiered at the Sundance film festival in January. Sedaris is also a frequent contributor to The New Yorker, and can be heard reading his original radio pieces on NPR’s This American Life in a sarcastic, slightly nasal voice that’s hard to hear without breaking into a smile.

He was Time magazine’s Humorist of the Year in 2001 and has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album.

Entertainment Weekly calls Sedaris, “The preeminent humorist of his generation,” and Publishers Weekly writes “Sedaris’ sparkling essays always shimmer more brightly when read aloud by the author. And his expert timing, mimicry, and droll asides are never more polished than during live performances in front of an audience.”

BALLETHISPANICO

SATURDAYNOVEMBER 16, 8 P.M.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage month this October, IU Auditorium is proud to present one of the most culturally significant Hispanic artistic groups in the nation: Ballet Hispanico.

Celebrating 42 years of dance and culture, Ballet Hispanico is recognized as the nation’s premier Latino dance organization. Founded in 1970 by artistic director and recipient of the National Medal of Arts Tina Ramirez, and now under the dynamic new artistic leadership of Eduardo Vilaro, Ballet Hispanico has emerged from its grassroots origins as a dance school and community-based performing arts troupe to become the foremost dance representative of Hispanic culture in the United States—with a professional company that tours nationally and internationally; a school of dance unique in its emphasis on ballet, modern, and Spanish dance as its core curriculum, and extensive programming for public schools both in New York and around the country.

Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, Ballet Hispanico has performed for over two million people, appearing in such major venues as The John F. Kennedy Center, the Auditorium Theater in Chicago, UCLA’s Royce Hall, Wolf Trap, Jacob’s Pillow, Boston’s Celebrity Series, and The Joyce Theater—as well as countless national television appearances.

The company’s innovative repertory fuses ballet, modern, and Latin dance forms into a spirited image of the contemporary Hispanic world. The company boasts a rich and diverse repertory of over 100 works by the foremost choreographers and emerging artists of our time, and more than 75 new works have been commissioned from choreographers of international stature—such as Alberto Alonso, Talley Beatty, Graciela Daniele, George Faison, Vicente Nebrada and Ann Reinking, and such dynamic young artists as Susan Marshall, Ramón Oller, David Roussève, Pedro Ruiz, and William Whitener. These choreographers represent the diverse spectrum of American and Latino nationalities, and their works expand on founder Tina Ramirez’s legacy of exploring the diversity of Latino culture through a fusion of classical, Latin, and contemporary dance powered by theatricality and passion.

An explosive celebration of culture through dance, Ballet Hispanico is an unforgettable performance experience for the dance aficionado and novice alike. The Star-Ledger states, “Ballet Hispanico knows when to turn up the volume, and when to turn it down. This dance company can wake up the neighborhood with a sudden, brassy shout or it can croon softly in your ear, whispering words of love.” Or perhaps the Chicago Sun-Times put it best: “quite simply, stellar.”

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET

TUESDAY–WEDNESDAYJANUARY 28–29, 8 P.M.

Travel back in time to a magical moment in rock ’n’ roll history—a famed and fateful recording session that brought together music legends Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins for the first and only time.

Million Dollar Quartet, the smash-hit Broadway musical inspired by this real-life, impromptu clash of the musical titans, brings you inside the recording studio with these four major talents who came together as a red-hot rock ’n’ roll band for one unforgettable night.

On December 4, 1956, Carl Perkins and his band, along with Jerry Lee Lewis, laid down some songs—including what would become one of the best-known Perkins songs, “Matchbox.” Perkins and Lewis were later joined by Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, and they held an impromptu jam session that would become the stuff of legends. A newspaper man at the scene wrote, “This quartet could sell a million,” and they were soon dubbed the Million Dollar Quartet. This was the only group performance of the four legends-to-be—a cultural flashpoint that captured the birth of rock ’n’ roll as four great musicians, with troubled lives and complicated careers, came together to forget everything but what they loved to do most: express the riotous joy, immense beauty, and poignant sadness of life in songs that shoot straight to the soul.

Million Dollar Quartet was conceived by film producer and writer Floyd Mutrux (whose works include Dick Tracy and Mulholland Falls) and Colin Escott (writer of Hank Williams: The Biography) and was a 2010 Tony Award nominee for Best Musical.

Audiences can’t help but be swept away by the incredible story and captivating tunes that permeate the show. This live musical stage experience features some of the best songs in rock ’n’ roll history, including “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “That’s All Right,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Walk the Line,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Who Do You Love?,” “Matchbox,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Hound Dog,” and more.

Performing these iconic songs takes considerable skill and talent, as the cast members pull off not only spot-on vocal representations of these rock legends, but play all instruments live. These portrayals not only capture the look and feel, but also the spirit of these timeless legends.

Critics and audiences across the country are falling in love with Million Dollar Quartet. The LA Times declares Million Dollar Quartet is “a jukebox musical that remembers to keep plugging in quarters,” and says, “[this show] stays loud and fun.”

ALVIN AILEY AMERICAN DANCE THEATER

WEDNESDAYMARCH 12, 8 P.M.

Join IU Auditorium as it celebrates America’s most lauded and beloved dance ensemble, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, as they feature their signature work Revelations.

Born from a now-fabled performance in March 1958, Alvin Ailey and a group of young African-American modern dancers, struggling to break the dance world free of its racial prejudices, became the first professional company to fully embrace cultural diversity, welcoming dancers of all races and backgrounds. Since that fateful day, the Ailey company has become the foremost modern dance company in the world—having performed for an estimated 23 million people at theaters in 48 states and 71 countries on six continents, as well as millions more through television broadcasts.

Now led by choreographer Robert Battle, with influence by emeritus director Judith Jameson, the Ailey company continues its legacy of highlighting the multicultural beauty of the American experience through works that celebrate the struggle, elation, joy, and pain of its citizens’ past, present, and future.

Groundbreaking and heartbreaking, spiritual and soulful, Ailey’s iconic works draw upon his “blood memories” as inspiration. This is the essence of his most popular and critically acclaimed work, Revelations, and countless others throughout Ailey’s lifetime.

Born out of Ailey’s childhood recollections of people, places, and experiences in and around his rural church, and using African American spirituals, song-sermons, gospel songs, and holy blues, Revelations fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul. More than just a popular dance work, it has become a cultural treasure, adored by generations of fans.

Seeing Revelations for the first time or the hundredth can be a transcendent experience—with audiences cheering, singing along, and dancing in their seats from the opening notes of the plaintive “I Been ’Buked,” to the rousing “Wade in the Water,” and the triumphant finale, “Rocka My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham.”

Despite its distinctly African American roots, Revelations’ spirit is universal, and since its premiere, the ballet has been performed continuously around the globe—transcending barriers of faith and nationality, appealing to universal emotions, and becoming the most widely-seen modern dance work in the world.

From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Arthur Laurents’ book remains as powerful, poignant, and timely as ever. The score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim—a collection of standards that includes “Tonight,” “America,” “Maria,” “I Feel Pretty,” and “Somewhere”—is widely regarded as one of the best ever written. And the extraordinary, Tony-winning choreography by Jerome Robbins completely changed the language of Broadway dance.

This tour, based on Arthur Laurent’s acclaimed 2009 Broadway revival, offers a bold new direction that builds on the show’s raw power and emotion to create an experience unlike any that came before it. Fresh and revolutionary, this production reaches an authenticity and gritty reality never before seen in this classic work. In an additional twist, performers will occasionally speak or sing in their character’s native Spanish—emphasizing the realism of this story of clashing cultures.

Variety says, “The true stars of West Side Story are Jerome Robbins’ graceful, endlessly expressive choreography and Leonard Bernstein’s score, which still sounds bracingly modern a half-century after it was first heard. The music is a primal force.”

Beautiful, breathtaking, riveting, and raw, this production has enough life, love, and energy to inspire—whether this is a patron’s first or 50th West Side experience. Audiences will be captivated by the stunning visuals, the heart wrenching performances, and the unparalleled dancing in this, the most beloved Broadway musical of all time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSCan I order tickets online?

Yes, just visit IUauditorium.com for full details about our online ordering services.

What’s the difference between a Gold and Silver Subscription?

A Gold Subscription is an order with at least one ticket to five or more event titles. Benefits include first priority seating, exclusive Sit with Friends service, and free ticket exchange (see subscriber benefits, page 28). Becoming a Gold Subscriber is the way to ensure you get the best available seats. Silver Subscribers order at least one ticket to one to four event titles. Becoming a Silver Subscriber ensures good seats, even if you only want to attend a few shows. Plus, you’ll avoid long lines and your tickets will be sent to your home address. (Note: Silver Subscriber orders will be filled in August in the order in which they are received. Prior to August, only seats for Gold Subscriber orders will be selected.)

What if the seating area I select is sold out?

If this happens, you will be contacted by our box office staff and provided with additional options. If you are placed in a lower-priced seating level, the difference in price will be refunded.

What kinds of accessibility services are offered by the Auditorium?

We strive to accommodate all of our guests. If you require wheelchair-accessible seating or have other special needs, please contact the box office at (812) 855-1103. Limited space in front of IU Auditorium around Showalter Fountain has been designated as accessible parking for those with handicapped permits. In addition, amplification headsets are available upon request at all performances. Large-print and Braille programs and audio descriptions are also available for each event with 14-day advance notice. For more information, please contact Guest Services at (812) 855-5739.

How do I get the IU Bloomington student discount?

Each IU Bloomington student with a current, valid CampusAccess student ID may redeem one student-priced ticket per event for their personal use. Simply ask for a student-priced ticket at our box office window, or mark the student-priced option when purchasing online. Although the student need not be present at the time of purchase, they will be required to present their student ID upon entry. Those without ID upon entry may be asked to return to the box office in order to upgrade their ticket for the general admission price.

I’m a student, but not an IU Bloomington student. Can I still receive a student discount?

We’re sorry, but only students enrolled on the Bloomington campus of Indiana University may use a student-price ticket to gain admission.

Can I sit with my friends?

Yes. There are two ways in which you can place this type of order. You can simply order all tickets on a single order form with one method of payment. Alternatively, if you are a Gold Subscriber (see page 28 for subscriber benefits) you may submit up to four order forms together with separate methods of payment. EACH order is charged an additional $10 service fee. All orders to be combined must be submitted to the box office at the same time, either in person or mailed together in the same envelope. Orders are filled according to the newest subscriber’s priority number.

Do I have to pay all at once?

When you become a Gold Subscriber by choosing five or more events, you are entitled to take advantage of the convenient 50/50 Payment Option in order to secure your great seats. Just check the Payment Option box on the order form or online, and 50% of your total subscription order will be billed to your credit card when your order is received. The remaining 50% and an additional $10 handling fee will be automatically billed to your card at the beginning of August. It’s one of great benefits of becoming a Gold Subscriber! (See page 28 for the other great subscriber benefits.)

Can I pay by bursar billing online and over the phone?

Yes. By using bursar billing for your order, your tickets will be mailed to the address on file beginning in September.

Is IU payroll deduction available?

Yes. The minimum order for IU payroll deduction is $100. The deadline for payroll deduction is August 27, 2013.

What is the $2.50 facility fee that is included in each ticket price?

IU Auditorium collects $2.50 from each ticket sale for any event held at IU Auditorium and places it into a special account. Funds in this account are used for facility capital purchases and improvements. The funds are also used to pay for repairs and maintenance. This means of financial support helps ensure IU Auditorium will continue to be a source of community pride for many years to come.

For more facility information, visit IUauditorium.com.

Avoid traffic congestion and the quest to find a parking spot on show nights. We offer FREE PARK AND RIDE on performance nights, courtesy of IU Campus Bus, from the Poplars 4 and Atwater 5 Garages to IU Auditorium and back after the show. Bus stops are marked with a on the map. Please assemble at these pick-up points, which are also marked by signage. Auditorium staff will be present to assist you. The buses run one hour prior to the curtain time and provide frequent pickups. Departures are available after the curtain goes down at the end of the event.

Atwater Garage is at the corner of Atwater and Faculty Avenues; Poplars Garage is located on Sixth and Dunn Streets.

Self-parking is available at two nearby locations.

While parking at IU Auditorium is limited, you may park at Jordan Avenue 3 Garage, located just east of IU Auditorium on Jordan Avenue between Third and Seventh Streets. A small number of handicap-accessible spaces are available next to IU Auditorium. Self-parking is also available in two lots at Indiana Memorial Union 1 2 .

This student wants to order 4 tickets to the performance of CHIMES OF CHRISTMAS (2 adult tickets, 1 IUB student ticket, and 1 child ticket). She writes the date on her order form and fills in the circle for the seating area she wants. She then writes the number and total cost for each type of ticket she wants.
