A Message from Our Leadership

Dear Supporters and Friends,

With a daily attendance at the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence (BGCL) exceeding 400 youth, we are dedicated to continually implementing new recreational and educational activities in support of our three core program areas: character and leadership, academic success, and healthy lifestyles. Over the 2013-14 program year, this effort included a new enrichment program with 300 third and fourth graders from Guilmette Elementary School, as well as a seven-week summer program to maintain academic skills acquired during the school year.

Our success in both areas was due to community partners who assisted with invaluable resources. They include Andover Bread Loaf, Addison Gallery of American Art, Beyond Soccer, Brooks School Day Camp, Camp Marist, Elevated Thought Foundation, Greater Lawrence Community Boating Program, Ground-work Lawrence, Latino STEM Alliance, the Lawrence Public Schools, Methuen Karate Association, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, One For Health Foundation, and the Merrimack Valley YMCA.

Also during the program year, BGCL was a proud participant in the Boys & Girls Club of America’s National Youth Outcomes Initiative. BGCL strives to be one of the top Clubs in the nation, and now there is data indicating our success in that direction.

While BGCL exceeded state, regional, and national averages in nearly every category, one result stands out: fun. In fact, 72 percent reported that BGCL is “doing great” (as opposed to “doing fine” or “room to grow”), compared to 57 percent of Clubs statewide, 55 percent regionally, and 49 percent nationally. Similarly, BGCL attained higher averages in the categories of overall safety, sense of belonging, and adult connections.

We are extremely encouraged by the positive results overall, but particularly this feedback. Kids must have fun, first and foremost, or they won’t come to the Club where they can then be exposed to all the other valuable programming we offer.

We have high goals and expectations, and we continue to be on the right track toward providing kids with incentives and tools to improve academics, make healthy decisions, and become great leaders in the Club and community. The survey data empowers us to do even more for the youth we proudly serve.

Thank you for your contributions to this shared success, and for your ongoing support in all that we still strive to accomplish. We are grateful for your contributions.

Gratefully,

Markus Fischer Thomas M. Burkardt Executive Director President

Our Mission

Our mission is to enable all young people of Greater Lawrence, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

For 123 years, the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence (BGCL) has been in the forefront of delivering innovative programs and activities for some of the poorest children in the poorest city in the state. BGCL fills a void by providing a safe place where they can learn, grow, and acquire skills through lasting relationships with caring staff members and dedicated volunteers. BGCL takes its stewardship role seriously, and continually refines and enhances offerings in order to meet the changing needs of the community.

Our Goal: Expand, Exhance Offerings for Our Members

Since the partnership between BGCL and Guilmette Elementary School launched in September 2013, new opportunities have served as a pathway to increased academic performance and student achievement. While students come to BGCL as part of the regular school day, their teachers attend professional development workshops. Activities include Kids in the Kitchen, seasonal sports, swim and water safety instruction, creative arts, dance, digital arts, chorus, yoga, karate, environmental explora-tion, indoor rowing, FIRST Lego League robotics, and Passport to Manhood & Smart Girls. We’re grateful to the local organizations that make so many programs possible!

Through the free ZAC Camp offered in conjnction with The ZAC Foundation, more than 100 6- to 9-year-olds learned the importance of water safety through swimming classes, class-room curriculum, and various hands-on activities during April vacation. Special guests included Boston Celtics forward Brandon Bass, who cheered on kids during their swim lesson, and Kim Garbarino, who discussed the perseverance required in swim-ming the English Channel. BGCL was selected as a host site due to its commitment to advancing water safety locally.

Longtime volunteer Lou Bernieri, executive director of Andover Bread Loaf, collaborated with BGCL education staff members to create Slice of Bread Loaf, a writing, arts, and performance program for elementary school chil-dren that begins with a two-week summer workshop and continues every other week through much of the year. The Slice is staffed by trained high school writing leaders from the BGCL. Young writers create literary treasures throughout the year, while discovering new confidence and talents in writing, poetry, and the arts.

Each day, as hundreds of children stream through our front door, they are welcomed by staff members who are like family. Members are greeted by name, quizzed about their recent test or sporting event, and embraced in a culture of hope and high expectations.

The staff at the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence is the critical ingredient that turns activities and programs into stepping stones toward academic success, healthy lifestyles, and community involvement. Their deep knowledge of the city of Lawrence, area schools, Hispanic culture, and Club history and tradition is the basis for lifelong, life-changing relationships with our members. Nearly half of our staff members are alumni of the Club, with up to 48 years of service at BGCL! This consistency creates a stable home-away-from-home, where each child can rely on a caring adult for encouragement in setting goals and working hard to achieve them.
