More Highlights WV PBS

Our 2013 summer learning initiative will help kids continue building key literacy skills throughout their summer vacations. Significant research has shown students experi-ence substantial learning loss when they do not participate in educational activities during summer months. To help bridge the gap, West Virginia PBS is presenting PBS KIDS programming, along with a host of other fun and education content presented across a variety of platforms, to encourage literacy and independent reading. The initiative will kick off with 10 weeks of themed programming featuring reading-re-lated episodes from different PBS KIDS series, beginning with a new episode of Wild Kratts, on June 3. Stay tuned on June 15 when the Super Why gang heads off on their around the world adventure. The summer learning initiative will also include themed programming on-air, online and on mobile, as well as partnership activities to support increased literacy. With content that is both educational and engaging, this initiative is designed to help kids and parents build skills while having fun dur-ing their break.

Check out our PBS KIDS weekday programs to help keep your kids reading this summer and follow our WV PBS KIDS (Raising Readers) Facebook page to stay up to date on programs, events, book suggestions and more. Antiques Roadshow in Palm SpringsMonday, June 10 at 8 p.m.From the 13th season, this episode features a mix of great good fortune and an equally staggering loss. At one extreme, experts discover the most valuable object ever appraised on the series: a 1937 painting by noted American abstract expressionist Clyfford Still conservatively estimated to be worth $500,000. At the other, collector Jim McCarty invites viewers to join the hunt for stolen works from his private collection of California plein air paintings.

Muddy Waters & The Rolling Stones LiveSaturday, June 22 at 11 p.m.On November 22, 1981, the Rolling Stones arrived in Chicago prior to playing three nights at the Rosemont Horizon. Long influenced by the Chicago blues, the band paid a visit to see legendary bluesman Muddy Waters perform. It didn’t take long before Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Ian Stewart were joining him on stage. Luckily, this amazing blues night was captured on camera and has now been restored from the original footage.

Annie: It’s the Hard-Knock Life, From Script to StageFriday, June 28 at 9 p.m.The show-stopping musical Annie, its characters and its songs are timeless and classic. It’s been 35 years since the little orphan Annie first stepped onto a Broadway stage. For Annie’s return to Broadway, this documentary offers a memorable behind-the-scenes look at every step of a single Annie production number, from the earliest phases of discussion among the creative team, rehearsals with actors, to opening night on Broadway.
