PRESIDENT’S REPORT April 2013
Over the last couple of months I have talked about some DEC projects
that are coming up and an information day has been organised with
Terry Goodlich from DEC for all 4WD Association club members to hear
what DEC hope to achieve with their projects/track adoptions and for
you to be able to ask questions.
One of the projects in Karratha has not had any interest and the money
has been reallocated to the Mundaring powerlines track which has been
adopted by the 4WD Association.
Hopefully there will also be some information about access to sections
of the state barrier fence in return for some volunteer work for the De-
partment of Agriculture.
It has been requested that Kaarakin be opened up on the day so club
members and their families can see some of the work being done by
the Black Cockatoo Society.
Saturday 20th April at Kaarakin 322 Mills Road East, Martin
from 11.30 with BBQ supplied by the Association at 1pm. Please see
page 7.

TRIP CO-ORDINATORS REPORT April 2013
This month I’m struggling with coming up with something to write
about. So what I’ll do is copy something from the last episode of the
TV show Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations.
“If I have any advice for any one, it’s to move. As far as you can as
often as you can. Across the ocean or simply across the river. The
extent to which you walk in somebody else’s shoes or at least eat their
food is a plus for everybody. Open your mind. Get up off the couch.
Move.”
He said it better than I can write it, but it’s good advice all the same.
See you all out there.
Go to https://secure.woodslaneonline.com.au/promotion/wa4wd/
travel-australia-with-boiling-billy which will give you the discounted
prices automatically and quote "WA4WD" at the check-out. Wood-
slane will ship the order directly to each member, however you do
have to create an account with them and pay by credit card.
Cheers,
David
STOP PRESS We have been invited to hold our next general meeting in Subaru Australia’s Regional Office at 21-25 Ilda Road Canning Vale on April 9th at the usual time of 7:30.

There are a number of options but we have decided on the standard ‘Arrive & Drive’ 20 lap race where the first driver to reach 20 laps signals the end of the race. Unfortunately we are unable to book this type of race and it goes on a first come first served basis so you might not be racing against Su-baru members.
The cost for this is $35 each race, $55 for 2 races or $70 for 3 races.
For more information visit www.kartworldbelmont.com.au
Where: Kartworld, 8 Cowcher Place, Belmont

TRIP & SOCIAL REPORTS
Southwest Rest – Day 1 – Saturday, 2 March 2013
I arrived at the meeting point (the Caltex service station at the corner of Safety Bay and Baldivis Roads) at about 8.20, in time for the 8.30 departure. John, Raj and visitors Jo and Liz were already there – 4 cars in total.
After a quick briefing, we were away, heading south down the Forrest Highway. Our first stop was at the Gull service station at Stratham, just north of Capel, arriving at about 10.00. After filling up, we no-ticed a “lady in distress” in the service station car park. She had managed to catch her bumper on a tree as she was reversing out of a parking space, and the bumper was hanging down and dragging on the ground. All the main mounting points were broken/had let go – amazingly, they were only made of hard plastic. However, there were still a couple of minor mounting points intact at end each of the bumper. So, John quickly swung into action and soon had the bumper free of the car. We then gave it to the lady and suggested she simply put it in the rear seat of her car. Unfortunately, she wasn’t all that relaxed about what had just happened, and was concerned
Page 18
SUBARU 4WD CLUB NEWS
that she now had no front indicators (they were in the bumper)! We then left her to her own devices, adding (when she suggested it) that we didn’t think the RAC was going to be able to fix the problem!
After that little “exercise”, we were back on the highway, heading south for our destination – the DEC Point Road campsite, a short distance south of the Conto’s Field camp-site, both of which are within Leeuwin Naturali-ste National Park. We arrived there at 12.00, with plenty of time to set up camp and have some lunch. The camp site was very pleasant, with lots of tall, shady gum trees and the tent pegs went in easily. There was also a long drop toilet. And, thankfully, there weren’t too many other campers at that point although, later in the day, we learnt that DEC were directing campers to Point Road from Conto’s Field (which was full).
At 1.30, we headed off for Boranup Beach – North Point, via forest tracks. Some of the tracks were better than others. They were all very dry and dusty and the dust hung in the air, as there was very little wind. One track (Davies Road) didn’t look like it had been used all that recently at all (very scratchy) and we had to take another track (Formation Road),
Page 19
SUBARU 4WD CLUB of W.A. INC
before getting on to Boranup Drive and continuing on to Bo-ranup Beach. The ac-tual track into the beach was interesting, with a few challenges for our visitors, Jo and Liz.
We eventually arrived at the beach, which was rocky, with a small sandy beach from which you could access the water. There were some others there – guys and girls who were going to camp there. They were playing very loud heavy metal music – I think the idea was to ensure that we didn’t also chose to (illegally) camp at the beach.
Members of the party went for a swim. The wa-ter was good and the swim was enjoyed. After we left the beach, we de-cided to head for the trig point at Salmon Patch. John had been there pre-viously and you can ac-cess it from the Cape to Cape walk.
We went perhaps a kilo-metre or so along the track before John decided that it was simply too closed in and scratchy.
Page 20
SUBARU 4WD CLUB NEWS
So we turned around and headed back the way we had come, ex-cept that, this time, rather than take dusty dirt tracks back to camp, we chose to take Caves Road. We reached camp at about 5.00, just in time for happy hour. There are plenty of nibbles to enjoy and drinks to wash then down with. There were also some young people camped near us – two Welsh boys with their girlfriends, one of whom was Bulgarian the other of whom was Brazilian. Interesting matches! One of the Welsh boys had an old short wheelbase Pajero with a nice, fairly new, roof top camper.
They joined us in conversation. It was a very pleasant evening. My thanks to John for a great trip.
Tony Richards.
Southwest Rest – Day 2 – Sunday 3 March 2013
The morning was bright, dry and cool, and we were all up and about and cooking breakfast by 6:30am.
All reported having had a good night’s sleep in spite of some loud music coming from some of the campers some distance away. One of the Welsh boys snored loudly all night, and John mentioned that he also heard “other” noises coming from the chap’s tent! Noise trav-els quite well in these campsites!
Breakfast over, and we were on our way at 9am sharp.
The track in/out of the Point Road camp is quite narrow, rocky/
Page 21
SUBARU 4WD CLUB of W.A. INC
gnarly with many overgrown roots and some corrugations, and very dusty, but the Foresters had no difficulty whatsoever in navigating this track.
First stop was Conto Spring, at the end of Point Road west. After parking the cars we walked down to find the spring.
Next, we drove back on Conto Road and joined Caves Road, going south to Hamelin Bay. We found an old Landrover on the beach near the jetty, but could not see how it could have got there as there did not appear to be a vehicle access to the beach. Anyway, we looked up some tourist information on the old Hamelin Bay jetty. It was built in 1882 by a company to service the local jarrah and karri tim-ber mills. The jetty could berth 3 ships at a time which were loaded with timber to send all around the world, but mostly to the UK, to use as paving for road and wharf construction.
We had wanted to access the beach at Hamelin Bay, but you were not able to do so. Beach access was only possible further north. So, we had to go back to Caves Road and then take a left down Re-serve Road to get to the beach. The track was very challenging with large rocks and dips and washouts dotted all over and we navigated these with full tyre pressures. Many sections of this track were probably worse than most of the challenges we had encountered on the Mundaring Powerlines track.
As we neared the beach access, the track became quite sandy and steep downhill. Just before a sharp, narrow downhill turnoff which led to the beach, there was enough space for our cars to stop and let the tyre pressures down (we reduced the pressures to around
Page 22
SUBARU 4WD CLUB NEWS
18psi). Jo’s car still had the plastic sump guard, and although John and Tony of-fered to take it off, Jo decided to park her car there rather than risk damaging her vehicle. So, Jo hopped in Tony’s car (as driver) and Liz joined John, and off we went to the beach. Much to my surprise, the narrow downhill turnoff did not pose any problems, and we drove a couple of kilometres on the beach. The sand was soft and deep, but our cars coped extremely well. The only problem was the steady stream of heavies coming the other way which did not want to risk going left or right to make way for us. Anyway, we managed quite well and reverse parked on a slope. We saw a few heavies getting bogged, probably because they hadn’t let their tyres down.
We all had a good swim and, thanks to Tony, some of us even had a fresh-water shower.
The drive back was perhaps just a little bit easier, maybe because of the lowered tyre pressures or experience of just having driven on the track on the way in. However, John’s car suffered a damaged front strut whilst climbing up the hill when leaving the beach, due to a large hole cre-ated by the heavies driving with full tyre pressures.
Back up over the hill, we stopped after hitting the tarmac to pump up. Then we headed to Hamelin Bay Wines for lunch. There we tested some

of their excellent wines and some of us decided to buy some for cel-laring or drinking that evening. The lunch menu, however, did not entice any of us, so John suggested that we try the Berry Farm, off Bussell Highway, for lunch.
Lunch at the Berry Farm was very good. We were even fortunate enough to have a New Holland honeyeater visit our table and nibble at Tony’s jam. Tony took some excellent pictures of this encounter.
After lunch, some of us felt like a swim to cool off and “get some ex-ercise”, so off we went, back down to Conto Road, where Jo found a perfect little enclosed swimming hole, well protected from the mas-sive waves by extra-large rocks. Jo, Liz and John cooled off in the water, whilst Tony and I just took photographs.
We arrived back to the campsite about 5.30 and within a short time started the beer o’clock. This comprised nibblies, beer and fine wine. Our Welsh friends had departed and the campsite was almost empty by now, so we managed to enjoy some peace and quiet, good food and drinks and good company and lots of conversations. This is what camping is all about!
We achieved so much on day 2, and a good time was had by all.
Thank you, John, for leading such a wonderful trip.
Raj.
