Dozens of little girls decked outin brightly colored leotardshuddled together on the floormats at Exxcel Gymnastics andClimbing in Newton yesterday, sharing big smiles and lots oflove for their hometown hero,Aly Raisman of Needham.

The girls watched a giantprojection of Raisman, whotrained at the gym years ago, asshe competed in the individualfloor competition at the Lon-don 2012 Olympics, and nailedit, nabbing a gold medal with ascore of 15.6.

“She was really good; awe-some, actually. It’s the bestshe’s ever done,” said 9-year-oldBella Valente.

When asked what it feelslike to train in the same gym asa gold medalist, 8-year-old Emi-ly Schoen said, “It makes mefeel like a mini-Olympian.”

“It inspires me to workharder. I want to be in theOlympics,” chimed in OliviaShih.

As Raisman stood at the topof the triad, medal in one handand the other hand on heart,Exxcel coach Tatiana Ka-

marskaya teared up a bit. Shecoached Raisman during herpre-teen years.

“It’s amazing. It feels likeanybody can do it. She was oneof those kids,” Kamarskayasaid, motioning to the throngof excited 8-year-olds nearby.

“She was one of many, andyou would never tell that shewould end up in the Olympics, but you always believe in everysingle kid, but you never know... What I remember about Alywas her unbelievable strength— she was very strong.”

Laura Fields, another coachat Exxcel, said Raisman’s tri-umph translates to a lot of in-spiration to her gymnastics stu-dents.

“They’re all standing up andscreaming, and jumping. Forthem to see someone who wentto this gym, then went for herdreams and won gold, it’s so in-spiring to the kids. They willprobably be extra motivated atpractice, so it’s good for uscoaches too.”

A few miles away, in Rais-man’s hometown of Needham,Mark Slade stood in front of

Town Hall to photograph a ban-ner congratulating her on lead-ing the U.S. team to victory lastweek.

“I saw her practice at thehigh school,” said Slade, whoworks at Needham High. “She’spretty phenomenal and she’sgot a good head on her shoul-ders. She’s very down to earth.A lot of this exposure she’s go-ing through maybe it’s not her, because she’s very ‘behind thescenes.”

“The town is definitely be-hind her.”

Strolling around downtownNeedham, that point is obvi-ous.

At Taylor’s Stationary, bal-loons and signs outside thestore encouraged and congratu-lated Raisman, and furtherdown the road, a window muralof Raisman adorns the windowof Sudbury Farms supermarket.

“I am sure there will defi-nitely be some kind of celebra-tion when she gets home,” saidCorina Adriescu, a friend ofRaisman since the sixth grade.“It is so weird to see her on (TV).She seems exactly the same.”

President Barack Obama saidyesterday that mass killingslike the shooting rampage at aSikh temple in Wisconsin wereoccurring with “too much regu-larity” and should prompt soul-searching by all Americans, buthe stopped short of calling fornew gun-control laws.

“All of us are heartbrokenby what happened,” Obamatold reporters at the WhiteHouse a day after a gunmanopened fire on Sikh worship-pers preparing for religiousservices, killing six before hewas shot dead by a police offi-cer.

But when asked whether hewould push for further gun-control measures in the wakeof the shootings, Obama saidonly that he wanted to bringtogether leaders at all levels ofAmerican society to examineways to curb gun violence.

That echoed his pledge lastmonth in a speech in New Or-leans to work broadly to “ar-rive at a consensus” on thecontentious issue after a dead-ly Colorado shooting spreehighlighted the problem in anelection year.

But like his earlier com-ments, Obama offered notimetable or specifics for suchdiscussions and did not calloutright for tighter gun con-trol laws. REUTERS

London-based StandardChartered hit back at the NewYork State Department of Fi-nancial Services (DFS) threatto tear up its state banking li-cense yesterday, dismissingthe charge that it was a “rogueinstitution” that “schemed”with the Iranian governmentas a distortion of the facts.

Bank insiders were asshocked as investors by the fe-rocity of the DFS accusationsover its involvement withIran, which is subject to U.S.sanctions over its nuclear pro-gram.

Chief Executive PeterSands scrambled back fromhis vacation as the bank heldhastily convened conferencecalls to plan its defense andtry to limit the damage causedto its reputation.

The U.S. agency said Stan-dard Chartered hid 60,000 se-cret transactions with Iraniancompanies, to generate hun-dreds of millions of dollars infees over nearly ten years.

One institutional investor, who asked not to be named, said: “Some of the languageused is very disturbing. Ofcourse, it could be that theAmericans are exaggerating, but somehow that doesn’tseem to be the case here,” theinvestor said.

NBC respondsto theOsbournes Sharon Osbourne quit hergig as a judge on “America’sGot Talent,” claiming thatNBC unfairly axed her sonJack from a new realityshow, “Stars Earn Stripes,”after his multiple sclerosisdiagnosis.

NBC is delicately sayingthat this isn’t quite true —it’s more that he’s justplain out of shapecompared to the

professional athletes, train-ers and former boy bandmembers (looking good,Nick Lachey!) who made thefinal cut.

“As a company that caresdeeply about the healthand safety of everyone onour shows — especially onelike ‘Stars Earn Stripes’ thatrequires dangerous waterstunts, strenuous physicalactivity and uses liveammunition — we requiredall potential participants toundergo medical vetting,”NBC Chairman Bob Green-blatt explained in astatement.

power struggle in songwritingwith Dinosaur leader J. Mascis,Barlow began pursuing hismore autonomous endeavors.

In contrast to the toweringguitar-based rock band thatMascis and Dinosaur Jr. wouldbecome known for, Barlow andhis work with Sebadoh soonled to a reputation as a pioneerof the lo-fi sound revolution.

Though at this point, hedoesn’t seek any credit for it.

“I guess I never thought toomuch about it,” he says. “It wasreally just about making music. In the ’80s and early ’90s, goingto a studio was a sure way tokill your music. Rock records in

the ’80s and ’90s were horren-dous-sounding to me. I just didwhat I did to keep it interestingfor myself. Generally I wantedto keep it kind of crunchy andnatural-sounding. I mean, wealso literally recorded things on

Walkmans. But to me that wasn’t a radical statement.”

Barlow saw his most prolificdecade of releases in the ’90s.Besides Sebadoh releases,Barlow would go on to releaserecords as Sentridoh (his soloacoustic project) and FolkImplosion, a better producedendeavor that gave him his firstTop 40 hit, “Natural One.”

If Sebadoh releases mayseem sluggish in recent times,it could be due to Barlow’s sur-prising reinstatement in Dino-saur Jr. as part of the recentreunion trend. But he says thishas only helped Sebadoh.

“When Dinosaur got back

together it sort of gave me the fi-nancial means to get Sebadohback together,” he says. “I wasable to make a leap and make ithappen for everybody. To becompletely happy in Dinosaur,I have to be doing other stuff. ...If I’m doing other stuff, I’m per-fectly happy doing Dinosaur.”

Augustine says he practicesevery night for about 30 min-utes and sends about 100 textmessages a day. He says his

Augustine’s texting maysometimes distract him fromhis chores (his parents havetaken his phone away as apunishment in the past). But ifhe wins this competition, itcould mean more than$50,000. It could mean theend to any future complaintsfrom his folks about overusinghis phone.

Texting since he was 13,Augustine first learned aboutthe competition by watching acommercial on MTV.

“I stumbled upon thisgame about three years ago.Back then, they had it on MTVwhere during a commercialbreak, they’d have a quote onthe screen where you’d text itto them, and that’s how you’dget in, but I’d never reallywin,” says Augustine.

While yes, vacation tempta-tion exists in the form of all-you-can-eat buffets, poolside

daiquiris and unlimited chipsand guac, you can sneak in agood workout without evenhaving to pack your sneakers(though you should, to get insome extra walking!). We askedMaskeroni to teach us somemoves you can do in the com-fort of your hotel.

Wake-up walk-outs“This is a great dynamic totalbody warm-up to get your en-tire body and muscles ready forexercise,” she says.

1Stand up straight and stretchyour arms up and over your

head, making a big circle.

2Once your arms are back atyour side, in one fluid

motion, bend knees until yourhands reach the floor.

3Walk your hands out into afull plank position. Here you

should be in one straight linefrom heels to top of head, gazeslightly forward of the thumbs, wrists under shoulders, abs

drawing gently towards thespine, legs active. Hold for onefull inhale and exhale. For anadded challenge, add a push-upat the end of the plank.

4Begin to walk the handsback, bending the knees,

and keeping the hips low.

5Once the heels reach theground, draw the

abdominals in and come tostand. For added cardiovascularexercise, reach the arms overhead.

6Repeat 10 times.

Lateral leg lifts

1Start in standing position, with your hands on your hips.

2Lift your left leg out to theside about 30 degrees (or as

high as you can keeping yourhips even), keeping it straight.

Keep a slight bend in the stand-ing leg, abdominals engaged, and the torso upright as youmove.

3Bring the leg back in (keepleg lifted) and repeat. Do 12-

15 repetitions. Then, switchsides.

Squat shuffle

1Enter into a squat: Bend yourlegs, keeping your hips back,

knees above your ankles, abdominals engaged, as if youwere about to sit in a chair.

2Step your right leg outslightly wider than shoulder

Step up, balanceand lunge“Use your hotel’s staircase totone your butt and thighs whilealso working your core.”

Justmake sure that they’reunsweetened — it should sayon the label.”Granola bars: “Make sure thatwhen you look on the ingredi-ent label you recognize the in-gredients on there. And makesure it has at least 8 grams ofprotein so it’s gonna give yousome sustaining energy.” If it’sa snack, the bar should be“around 200 calories.”Single cups of oatmeal: Usethe coffeemaker in your hotelroom for hot water. “Do plainoatmeal and then have yourtrail mix to add sweetness andsome protein with the nuts.”Jerky: “It is a really greatsource of protein. Stay healthyon boardyour flightSitting on an airplane sur-

rounded by coughing, sniffling and sneezingneighbors is unnerving

indeed. Aerosolized dropletscontain the viruses that spreadcolds, and a number of scientif-ic studies have documented thepresence of illness-causing bac-teria and viruses on surfaces ofairplane cabins and restrooms. These upper-respiratory infec-tions and the gastrointestinalviruses that cause nausea, vom-iting and diarrhea are easilytransmitted from person to per-son. They can be inhaled ortransmitted when you rub youreyes, nose or mouth after com-ing into contact with contami-nated surfaces. Washing yourhands frequently with soap andwater, or using hand sanitizer,

is the best way to avoid catch-ing and transmitting these ill-nesses. Avoid shaking hands ifpossible. If you are particularlyvigilant, wipe your tray tables,

arm rests, seat console controlsand overhead buttons with dis-infectant towelettes, and ig-nore seat-back magazines andpamphlets. It may attract un-wanted attention, but germo-phobes can wear a disposablesurgical mask while on board. And in hotels, don’t forget towipe down the TV remote con-trol.

Traveler’s diarrhea also canbe inconvenient, so if you goabroad, avoid eating raw foodand vegetables, only drink orbrush your teeth using bottledwater and ask for no ice cubesin your drinks.

If you do get sick, bring astash of your favorite over-the-counter cold, cough and fluremedies along in a first aid kit.As a last resort, ask your doctorfor “just-in-case” prescriptionsfor antibiotics to cover respira-tory illnesses and traveler’s di-arrhea, which may save the dayif all else fails.

Every time I fly on an airplane, people all around me arecoughing and sniffling. Howcan I avoid getting sick andruining my vacation?

The question:

Bring your own reading material to avoid the germs crawling around in your seat pocket.

Alwaysexhausted? What it could meanTiredness is part of our dailycycle. But if you’re constant-ly exhausted, there could besomething amiss.

“If you take a nap or get agood night’s sleep and feelready to go, then [fatigue]isn’t anything to worryabout,” says Dr. Kent Holtorf, who specializes in fibromyal-gia and fatigue at the HoltorfMedical Group, which has of-fices in Philadelphia. “Or ifyou exercise and feel better, then you’re healthy. If youexercise and feel worse, thenyou should think [about]chronic fatigue syndrome.”

Unrestful sleep, muscleaches, cognitive dysfunctionand depression are all symp-toms of CFS.

“Chronic fatigue

syndrome is a bad term — itdoesn’t tell you anything,”Dr. Holtorf adds. “The causesare hard to determine andtherefore hard to treat. Itcould be a low immune sys-tem causing multiple infec-tions. Most people get infect-ed by Epstein-Barr, but fightit off. Most people areexposed to viruses, but mostsuppress it. People with lowimmunology don’t.”

Dr. Holtorf says that cer-tain people are more suscep-tible to CFS than others. “It’susually a Type A personality,”he says. “They don’t rest andthe body is overwhelmed.”

Coverage of Sikhtemple killingsfound wantingI’m very disappointed atsome media coverage of theshooting at Wisconsin Sikhtemple as an act of “mistak-en identity.” The implicationthat those cowardly murdersof innocent lives were chieflymistaking turban-wearingSikhs for Muslims on thepart of the perpetrator seemsto me, as a humanist, utterlydeplorable. Bin Laden, JaredLoughner, the suspect JamesHolmes and Anders Breivik— none of them committedthe murders “mistakenly.”They were rather premeditat-ed and well-planned. To avertsuch terror in the future, thenews media could help bymore in-depth analysis of thetopic, in contrast to superfi-cial leveling such as the “mis-

I’ve noticed a surprisingly lowlevel of coverage concerningSunday’s attack on the Sikhtemple in Wisconsin, and todate no letters on it appearingon this page. I sincerely hopethis is because people are en-gaged in some serious con-templation about our society’sgun fetish, and not simply be-cause the victims were non-Caucasian and non-Christian,and thus not worth the time.JOSEPH CONNELL, VIA E-MAIL

If Misty May-Treanor andKerri Walsh-Jennings aregoing to win an unprece-dented third straight gold

medal in beach volleyball, they are going to have to de-feat America.

Just hours after May-Tre-anor and Walsh-Jennings de-feated the favored Chinesepair of Xue Chen and ZhangXi, they were joined in thegold medal final by the otherAmerican duo of April Rossand Jen Kessy.

Ross and Kessy battled theNo. 1 seed and defendingworld champion Brazilians Ju-liana and Larissa at HorseGuards Parade in a cold, driv-ing rain. The Americans spenteach timeout with their feetin buckets of warm water tokeep them from going numb.

May-Treanor and Walsh-Jennings captured the nation’sattention in 2004 when theywon gold in Athens. Theydominated the sport for thenext four years and won againin Beijing.

But over the past fouryears, the duo went their sepa-rate ways as Walsh was mar-ried and had children in May2009 and May 2010 and May-Treanor partnered with NicoleBranagh. In the interim, theChinese and Brazilians domi-nated the sport.

A year before the LondonOlympics, the duo got back to-gether for one last go atOlympic gold, and after yester-

day’s win, they will have thatchance.

“We want to seal the dealthat we’re the best team that’s

ever happened,” Walsh-Jen-nings told reporters after thematch. “Misty has changed mylife. I just love her. I want towin tomorrow for us.”

Ross and Kessy, mean-while, were making theirOlympic debuts and as the No.4 seed weren’t necessarily ex-

pected to figure in the medals.“I had a picture in my head

at the beginning of the seasonof how I wanted us to play, and we’re living that picture,”Walsh-Jennings said.

An emotionalrollercoaster

Things went from doom and gloom to exuberancefor Raisman Earns spot in history with floor gold

There were several momentsyesterday afternoon in Londonwhere it looked like Aug. 7,2012 would go down as one ofthe more crushing days in thelife of Needham’s Aly Raisman.

Just a few days removedfrom missing out on her firstindividual medal due to a little-known tie-breaker rule in theall-around, it looked like Rais-man was about to get her heartbroken again, this time due toquestionable scores by thejudges in the beam final. Herinitial score was 14.946, butcoach Mihai Brestyan filed anappeal. The new, higher scorewas soon-after announced and

the crowd went wild. Whoknows, maybe the rush fromthe controversy propelled herto gold a little over an hour lat-er? In over two weeks ofOlympic games, yesterday willbe known as Raisman’s day.Mark it down: Aug. 7, 2012.

When it comes to an-tique homes, archi-tecture is the initialstriking element of

But then, there’s history, too. Who lived there? Thishouse is known as the EdwardCrane House, begging thequestion that even the suppos-edly mighty Google can’t an-swer: Who was Edward Crane?

“I Google[d] him and stilldid not find anything,” sayslisting agent Patricia Ng.

Ed Crane, man of mystery? "Its primary significance is

architectural, having been de-signed by prominent archi-tects Loring and Phipps. I notethat no research was doneabout the owners or inhabi-tants of the house at the timeit was submitted,” says Kristen-na P. Chase, Preservation Plan-ner for Somerville's HistoricPreservation Commission.

STARTING AT THE BEGINNING

By Attorney George Warshaw

Ireceived an email from a

reader asking:

“If I want to buy a house

what is the proper place to

look for information and also

a good price?”

Whether you’re a beginner

or an experienced buyer,

the place to start is with a

mortgage lender, unless

you’re lucky enough not to

need one.

Almost every seller wants

to know if you have been

“pre-approved” for a loan; in

other words, that a bank has

checked out your income and

credit and all that is needed to

give you a loan is an appraisal

of the property, verification of

the information provided and

a few routine details.

The pre-approval letter will list

a loan amount that you qualify

for based on your income and

credit.

With that in hand, choose

the area where you want to

live and start shopping online

for properties that that fit

your price range – but avoid

registering online with a

broker if you can (you may get

more solicitations than you

can handle). You can usually

get property details elsewhere

Don’t skip the spa appointment “In the bathroom, candles arereally important forambiance,” stresses Garcia. She also suggests stocking upon accoutrements for a bub-

ble bath. “Normally peopletake a shower because every-one is in a rush, but whenyou’re going to lounge youwant to make sure thatyou’re taking bubble baths. They make you feel way morerelaxed.”

Start with the bedfor the best R&R“The bed is really importantwhen you want to feel likeyou’re in a hotel,” says Garcia. The first step: Upgrade tohotel-quality sheets. “All the

sheets should have at least500-800 thread count,” shesays. Also, stay in a neutralcolor palette.

“Whites on whites, creamson creams. You never go to areally nice resort and they haveall different pattern sheets.

White and crisp is always best.”Another key trick, she says, isto layer your bed. “Make sureyou have a duvet insert or acoverlet on top of the sheets.”

TAKE A STAY-CATION

“Make sure that pillows are nice and plush,” says Garcia. “These are all things that make you feel very comfortable.”

Edit your stressful junkIf you want to feel like you’resomewhere far from yourreality, eliminate your usualclutter, says Garcia. “Whenyou’re at home, you don’t

notice all the papers piling upbecause you’re used to seeingthem every day — but if youjust ran in and put those thingsaway, got really colorful pillowsand popped in your iPod, youwould feel like you’re not inyour space.”

Next step: Light some candles.
