    Samuel move his family to Harbor Springs Michigan in 1875. During our research on August 24 - 25, 2006 in Harbor Springs, we, Michael and Ruth (Parker) Adams were told by a very knowledgeable Senior Librarian of the Harbor Springs Library that many Civil War Veterans moved to the Harbor Springs area because the Government was giving it's Civil War Veterans land in the Harbor Springs area (120 acres). This would explain why they moved from Birghton, Livingston County, Michigan to Harbor Springs.

    Source Cemetery Information: Lakeview Cemetery- This cemetery is in northern Harbor Springs. One corner of it has the Catholic cemetery land cut out, but they are two separate cemeteries. Contributors: Dianne Johnston - I transcribed this cemetery in Jan 2003 from records obtained from the cemetery sexton. It contains both marked and unmarked graves. Copy of Transcription on file. Transcribed information was as follows: Barber Sam, date of death Aug. 13, 1897 Barber Elizabeth, date of death Oct. 6, 1891 Barber Harry, date of death Dec. 24, 1890 Note: Death record can be found at the Emmet County Clerks Office located in Petoskey, Michigan, Liber 1, Folio 123.

    Death record information as reviewed by Mike and Ruth (Parker) Adams on August 25, 2006 while at the Emmet County Clerks Office. Ruth is Samuel's and Elizabeth's great, great granddaughter. Death record reads as follows: Name: Samuel S. Barber Date of death: Aug 13, 1897 Sex: male Race: White Marriage status: Widowed Age:69 Death Location: Harbor Springs Cause of death: Brights Disease Place of Birth: New York Occupation: Merchant Father's name: James Barber Father's birth place: New York Mother's name: Emma Barber Mother's place of birth : New York Note: two record discrepancies were found- one was Samuel's middle initialS., it should have been L. as indicated on his grave stone and all other records found. The other Discrepancy was his mothers name, it should have been Mary and/or Polly not Emma.
