Senior Project Reflection 

The initial idea for my senior project was to find an ugly or trashed wall and to paint a mural on it. Over time, it’s evolved into something different: a multi‐canvas painting, which will be hung in CSA’s B‐wing. The theme of the artwork is the senior class and its four‐year progression. 

While the format of the idea changed, its core stayed the same. Our plan to paint over a graffitied wall went out when we (our group) could not find a suitable location. So our next plan was to paint somewhere close to CSA, such as on a nearby brick wall. That idea never went anywhere either. Then someone suggested an alternative to a permanent outdoor painting: canvases. On canvases, the artwork would be transportable, indoors, and removable. This was a major turning point. From there, it was just a matter of refining our ideas. Two of my group mates drew up a design for a multi‐piece canvas. They then constructed it out of hardwood and cardboard. For the theme of the artwork, we chose to represent our class, the 2012 CSA seniors.  

I believe our project is revolutionary, especially in relation to CSA. Being a STEM school, CSA has never focused much attention on the development of artistic students or the creation of art projects. There are art classes and there have been a few notable creative works by students, but overall it cannot be said that art is in CSA’s spotlight, especially compared to most of the math and science classes. That’s why I think my project is revolutionary. No one else thought of visually representing the class of 2012, or leaving behind a legacy of creativity to future students. Our project is going to be the one hanging up for everyone to see, ooh and aah over. 

The journey to the point we are at now was not easy. In the early stages, I was tearing my hair out trying to wrap my mind around the large scope of what I was envisioning. I didn’t like my original group at first either. It was too large and too vague. Everyone had a sort of a blurry mental picture of what they wanted, which caused conflict. However, time whittled down the size of the group to a few dedicated members. 

By then we were approaching the end of the first semester with absolutely no plan. Figuring out where to place the mural was a real issue. There were also a lot of schedule conflicts. For several months, the project got set on our mutual back burner and became a source of stress, as life got in the way‐ internships, community service, jobs, and homework. Occasionally, we would have a group meeting or a CFG, but that was all. 

Around the middle of third quarter, the realization that we were running out of time hit us, and we began hammering out the project. We decided to place the artwork in the B‐wing hallway. Built and designed the canvas.  Put the project on the back burner again for a few weeks as I completed my internship. Recently, we got cracking again, and right now we’re in the process of designing the artwork. Hopefully we will paint it within this week, and then all that will be left is the presentation.  

I feel that we were most successful in persisting, despite all the hurdles we had to jump over. This project went through a lot of points where nearly everybody was ready to give up. But even though it’s going to be finished late, I think that the artwork will turn out really well. I’m not really satisfied or dissatisfied with the project. I wish that I hadn’t procrastinated nearly as much. I wish I’d known from the beginning that simpler is better when it comes to artwork. I overcomplicated the entire situation in my mind when I first started, and it threw me off for a long time. But at the same time, I am proud of the way we have been able to pull it together recently. I feel like I’ve gained a lot of knowledge about leading a project.  

This project will totally be useful to me in the future, because I’ll have the bragging rights to completing a mural in high school, which is pretty respectable in my field (graphic design). I also can use it to prove that I’m driven and creative, two skills that are really valued in designers.

Senior Project Reflection 

 

  My Senior Project was to paint a mural. Our plan was we wanted to plan a themed mural and then paint it somewhere in Columbus, in the thought that we would help “Beatify Columbus.” We had plans to fundraise money for supplies, and contact people of the community who could help us find a location that would be appropriate. Unfortunately these plans fell through.  

  Our project changed, from the “Beatify Columbus” plan, to designing our own canvass and painting a mural that will be put on the wall here at CSA. The canvas is made up of four pieces and resembles a tree in a way. I am not sure how I feel about our project, but I do know that I am not satisfied that it not as revolutionary as I would like it to be. While at the same time I am pleased we still painted a mural and that people get to see and appreciate it. It is also rewarding to know that our second plan pulled through and work out nicely. It’s something that I can look at and be proud of.  

  Our greatest struggle, I would say, was our procrastination/ working out our schedules with each others.  It just seemed like we kept putting off and putting off. We were trying and slowly moving toward our goal but when we ran into to trouble with our initial plan we started to worry, but pulled through when we came up with our second plan. This was building our own canvas and painting a mural full of all five of our personalities encompassed within the art work and was a success. I am very satisfied with the painting that we came up with and the work that I contributed in the mural.  

  I wish that at the beginning I would have known how time consuming painting a big mural is. In that case it probably would have helped us in our planning and strategizing to get it finished in a timelier manner. You have to think about the execution of building the canvas our self’s so that it is unique to our project, and then there is the amount of time it takes to plan the shape of the canvass its self.   And 

when you take into consideration the planning of what is going to be drawn and painted on the canvas. It seemed as though we were procrastinating because we were thinking that it’s going to be too hard that we were almost afraid to start.  

  Completing this project directly relates to what I am doing after high school. I am going to school for photography, and some art.  Painting this mural helps me when it comes to being creative, and having an eye for color. Art is something that I love, and enjoy. So things such as painting a mural, photography, and music as well, are like an outlet that I can escape into. So painting this mural can be something I can refer to as stepping stone for when I am creatively stumped or something that I can just use for a portfolio in the future.

Senior Project Reflection 

My senior project was an artistic creation intended to leave behind the legacy of the first graduating class at Columbus Signature Academy. We were aware of the bland and spacious corridor next to the front desk area and came up with a canvas shape that would utilize the long and narrow area.  

Initially the project was meant to be a mural in an outside area. The group discussed how difficult it would be for everyone to have time to work on it together so we decided it would be better to create a hanging piece of art so that we could work on it in different locations. We also thought about the time we would be most likely to work on this project and we decided that most of it would get done in winter. This called for an inside location to be approved.  

I am very pleased with how revolutionary the project is. I feel that we have utilized alternatives well. The group thought outside the box and I was grateful for the courage to do so. I feel that the project is revolutionary simply because the intentions behind it were innovative and problem‐solving.  

The struggles I encountered during the project were mainly from working with a group of people who wait for someone else to take on the leadership position. Eventually it came down to me and one other group member to finally put our project into action. Every time we completed a part of the canvas was a triumph. We were worried about how it would actually turn out and it was wonderful to see it in real life.  

Thinking of cheaper and alternative materials was the most successful part of the project. Another successful piece was creating a layout for our canvas. I am not yet satisfied with my project because of the ongoing issue of what we are going to put on this canvas we 

have created. I would have started the project months before we actually did. The brain storming part is the hardest.  

I think this project will benefit me for the future. Being pushed to take charge was an important experience. Pushing through the procrastination barriers was huge for me to overcome. I am thankful for Columbus Signature Academy pushing me to be as good as I can be, especially when I’m too lazy.  

The project related significantly related to my goals for the future. I want to be able to be creative and artistic in whatever career I come across. This project has done just that. I was glad to apply my mathematics skills to the canvas layout. I enjoy both math and art. The combination came straight from my heart.

Senior Project Reflection At the Beginning of the year, I joined the Mural Project group. At first the plans were a little shaky and we didn’t have a whole lot figured out about our final product. After a couple of meetings filled with brainstorms we decided on a large four piece mural that would hang in our school and reflect the senior class’s four years at Columbus Signature New tech. The mural is in four parts and three of the parts are shaped as arrows representing the students growing in the school and moving forward to graduation. Each arrow is filled with many different types of art and art styles. Each member of the group put their own ideas and interests into the mural and that made it special and unique. 

  When it came to thinking outside of the box and coming up with a neat design, I feel that my team and I came up with a very unique way of making the canvas and also a creative shape for it. The overall project was pretty basic but our team put our heads together to think of neat twists to put on the project.  While working on the project, we encountered some problems with getting the entire group together to work on the project which was understood since everybody in the group had part time jobs.  Another problem that we encountered in the beginning was finding a way to fund the project since our original ideal included large and expensive canvas that could only be bought at local craft stores. I think that the most successful parts of the project was building and constructing our homemade arrow canvases. For the most part, I am very satisfied with the project and think it was a good idea and am glad it was carried out into action. The thing that our group knows now that we wish we would had known in the beginning would be; how hard in can be to construct murals of such a big size with the little construction knowledge that we had. 

  I think completing this project will leave a positive impression in the next group of students at CSA. I also think that I would be neat for every graduating class to add something special from there four years to the mural to keep it growing in size. Everybody that was in the mural project group was interested in some form of art and most of us are planning to use art in our future careers. Every group member had the chance to add their own art ideas to the mural. Everybody in the group has taken an art class at CSA so in was really neat to see what they took away from the art classes provided here. It has definitely been a blast working with my senior project group and I am really excited about the finished product. I think the mural will impact the incoming students at CSA for years to come and will show our love for this school.
