In just his third season, Kimble led the team to a first-place MIAC finish, the fourth MIAC Championship title in program history. The season included an eight-game win streak, highlighted by a win over nationally ranked Carleton. Following their 1-0 win against Concordia College that clinched MIAC Tournament title, Kimble advanced the team to

the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament. There they were defeated by No. 12 Washington University of St. Louis (Mo), ending their season ranked No. 22 in the nation.

2011 Review

Under the direction of third year coach Steve Kimble, the Saint Benedict soccer team finished with an overall record of 13-7-3. The Blazers finished as the MIAC Regular Season Co-champions (Carleton) before winning the MIAC Tournament. The Blazers also earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament where they advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the second time in program history. Their post-season efforts earned them No. 22 in the final national ranking.

A significant moment during the season was their 1-0 defeat against nationally ranked Carleton College, thanks to sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Lauer (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) and her lone goal, and to first-year goalkeeper Megan Favorite (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) with six saves. Following the win against Carleton, the Blazers continued on an eight-game unbeaten streak, going 10-1-1 in their next 12 games.

The Blazers ended their regular season as the top seed for the MIAC playoffs. Hosting Macalester College in the first round, the Blazers won 2-0 in a shootout. In the MIAC Tournament championship game, they faced third-seeded Concordia-Moorhead and neither team budged in the first 99-plus minutes of the game. In overtime, Colleen Bouchard (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) finally paired up with sophomore defender Kerrie Dingmann (Wayzata, Minn./Orono) for the lone goal that gave the Blazers a 1-0 win and the conference’s postseason crown.

The MIAC playoff title gave the Blazers an automatic entry into the NCAA Tournament, where they traveled to Dubuque, Iowa for the first round of play. Their first game against Carroll University ended in success with another shootout victory. The second round of the NCAA tourney was against No. 9 ranked Loras College, and the Blazers stayed strong, beating the host team by a score of 2-1. The win advanced them to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 1998.

The Blazers ended their incredible season with a 2-1 loss to No. 12 Washington University of St. Louis. Things started well, though, taking a 1-0 lead in the game’s first three minutes. The advantage lasted well into the second half, but it was the final minutes of the game that proved to be their downfall with Washington scoring two goals with just five minutes remaining. The Blazers made a few final pushes but were unable to score again.

The season’s success earned many distinctive awards. Coach Kimble was named MIAC Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year and NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year. Senior Sami Meyman was named All-MIAC, NCAA All-Region and NCAA All-American. Colleen Bouchard was named MIAC Co-Player of the Year, All-MIAC, and NCAA All-Region. Kaitlyn Lauer was named All-MIAC. Kelsey Faber and Megan Favorite were named All-MIAC Honorable Mention and Stephanie Gibbs was named to the MIAC Sportsmanship team.

In the Blazers year-end Awards Program, Sami Meyman was recognized as the CSB Athlete of the Year, and Megan Favorite earned Rookie of the year. Olivia Wee earned Scholar Athlete of the Year and the Blazer soccer team was crowned the Blazer Athletics Academic Champions with a team GPA of 3.49.Colleen Bouchard (L) & Laura Kosch celebrate during the

Blazers second round NCAA Tournament win over Loras that sent them to the sweet sixteen.

Coming off its best season in over a decade, the Saint Benedict soccer team carries high expectations into 2012. Entering his fourth year at the helm, head coach Steve Kimble welcomes back the MIAC Co-player of the Year along with a pair of All-MIAC returnees as the Blazers begin the defense of their 2011 MIAC Championship.

With an 8-2-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) record, on their way to an overall record of 13-7-3, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team finished last season as the MIAC Co-champions, sharing the crown with Carleton. Following a MIAC Tournament title and run to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament, the Blazers begin 2012 picked second in the preseason MIAC Coaches Poll.

Saint Benedict opens the season just behind Concordia in the preseason poll, despite beating the Cobbers in last season’s conference tournament championship game. The two teams tied for the scoring lead in 2011, with each burying 19 goals in MIAC play a season ago. They were one and two in total points last season, while tying for third for fewest goals allowed.

Each also went on deep NCAA Tourney runs, and if the season shapes up the way it’s expected, sparks should fly when the two teams meet on the final day of the regular season.

Colleen Bouchard leads the Blazer returners in her junior season, after claiming All-Region and MIAC Player of the Year honors in just her sophomore year. She is joined by fellow All-MIAC returnees Megan Favorite and Kaitlyn Lauer, but the Blazers have the tall order of replacing All-American defender Sami Meyman. Meyman became the first CSB soccer player to become an All-American since 1998 and just the fourth ever.

Bouchard returns after scoring a team-leading 21 points (7G/7A) in 2011. A starter in 40 consecutive games heading into the year, she had a knack for finding the net at the right time last season. She scored a pair of game-winners, assisted on the winning goal in the MIAC Championship game, and scored the opening goal in the eventual win over Loras in the NCAA Tournament.

While Bouchard’s 21 points return in 2012, the Blazers must replace fellow 20-point scorer Heather Beshears (7G/6A). Helping pick up the slack will be Jess Pellegrene who returns for her senior season after a career high four goals in 2011, and Alli O’Brien will look to build on a first year where she scored three goals and found herself in the starting line-up as the Blazers opened the NCAA Tournament.

No other returner brings back more than two goals, meaning the Blazers will need a talented group of first years to adjust quickly to the college game. Alyssa Hoffman and Peggy Renier join the team after all-conference careers at Benilde St. Margaret, and Grace Vaughan was conference MVP while starring at Shakopee High School.

Also new at forward is junior Kristina Burk, who makes the move up top from the backline, adding additional experience to the Blazer attack.

Anchoring the defense will be Favorite in the nets, who started 17 matches in her rookie campaign posting 11 wins with 10 coming by shutout. Returning to the back line in front of her will be sophomore Heidi Hanson, who appeared in all 23 games while starting 12 in 2011, including each game in the MIAC Tournament as the Blazers pitched back-to-back shutouts.

Like the scorers, the defenders will use their newcomers to fill the holes left by graduation, and Ellie Mullen and Leah Powlison make the long trip over from Oregon expected to contribute right away. Also in the mix will be fellow rookie Megan Lenz, a three-time all-conference defender from Centennial High School.

The ability to blend the returning talent, with the incoming youth will be key to the success of the Blazers in 2012, as they look to retain their spot among the MIAC’s best.
