DistribuTECH, the largest U.S. conference that covers the smart grid from-end-to-end held in San Antonio, Texas Jan. 24-26, finished the week with record-breaking registration numbers. DistribuTECH is the utility industry’s leading smart grid conference and exposition, covering automation and control systems, energy efficiency, demand response, renewable energy integration, advanced metering, T&D system operation and reliability, power delivery equipment and water utility technology.

This year, the conference featured 14 conference tracks, 78 conference sessions, more than 135 utility speakers, more than 350 speakers overall and 21 Utility University courses. DistribuTECH continues to lead the way in information exchange and utility education. From instructional courses to experts delivering the latest industry details, DistribuTECH had a lot of power knowledge in the Lone Star State.

In addition, DistribuTECH had two co-located events in San Antonio this year, the Utility Products Conference and Exposition and the Electric Light & Power Executive Conference. The Electric Light & Power Executive Conference preceded DistribuTECH, Jan. 22-23, 2012, at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio. PennWell Corp., a worldwide media company based in Tulsa, Okla, owns DistribuTECH, Utility Products Conference & Exposition and Electric Light & Power Executive Conference.

“Smart meters may be one of the most powerful drivers for changing the way energy is distributed and consumed, but it can be difficult to sell a customer on a change that they never thought they needed and did not ask for.” – Bill Harmon as he discussed the importance of engaging customers and some of the programs Reliant Energy is using to engage the customer.

“In this new energy economy, economic development and R&D can work together to boost clean and renewable technology,” – Doyle Beneby as he talked about the CPS Energy’s initiatives to becoming greener, adding renewable generation and improving operations.

“I am here to thank you because without electricity, we’d all be miserable,” – Ben Stein as he closed the Keynote Session with his dry, witty insight into the country’s economic and political situation.

conference

DistribuTECH 2012 officially kicked off with an opening keynote session on Jan. 23 with more than 2,500 attendees. The keynote featured Doyle Beneby, president and CEO of CPS Energy; Bill Harmon, vice president of residential marketing and product development of Reliant Energy, and Ben Stein, actor, author, economist and pop culture icon.

Pre-conference courses were offered Jan. 22 - 23. Courses were taught by recognized experts in their respective fields and are held in a classroom environment to maximize the learning experience. Eleven full day pre-conference courses and 11 half-day pre-conference courses were offered Jan. 22 – 23.

“Electricity must be consumed as fast as it’s produced, it can’t be interrupted. If reliability slips, there will be blood in the streets — so your work is not only essential, it’s also cool,” – Ben Stein, actor, author, economist and pop culture icon.
