the snowy Mountains of Music Festival has very quickly become an iconic event for my community.there is nowhere in australia quite like the nsW snowy Mountains and this exciting event shows off the distinctive qualities of the
Mountains and the community which i’m very proud to represent. the nsW government has a vision to make the nsW snowy Mountains one of the world’s premier winter destinations. diverse and varied cultural events like this music festival will play a key role in making this vision a reality.i wish all the performers and guests a very warm welcome to the snowy Mountains and all the best for an entertaining and enriching weekend.John Barilaro Member for Monaro
Welcome to the high country!
What a great way to spend a weekend at the snow and kick off the ski season and winter proper.
the snowy Mountains of Music is one of the most important events on the regional
calendar giving a chance to experience the wonder of the high country in Winter whilst showcasing some fantastic local and international talent.
this year the festival has an outstanding line up with something for everyone, including the sounds of world, folk, roots, celtic, acoustic, song, dance, poetry and yarn-spinning.
australia’s high country is one of the jewels in australia’s tourism crown. a music festival to kick off the snow season will be a great way to show the high country off to tourists.
this region offers tourists so much more than skiing, surfing and fishing. the music festival is part of a rich music and arts culture that is also drawing many new visitors.
i am looking forward to this years snowy Mountains of Music Festival, with impressive artists like the black seeds performing, it’s sure to be huge.
i would like to congratulate and thank the team at the perisher resorts Chamber of Commerce for putting this great program of music together.

What a great way to be celebrating the official start to the australian ski season!
this fabulous four-day event presents an amazing and eclectic mix of live music talent that has wowed audiences around the world.
the perisher snowy Mountains of Music Festival promises to make perisher Valley, smiggin Holes and guthega alpine Village the most vibrant - if not coolest - place in australia this Queen’s birthday long weekend.
tourism snowy Mountains congratulates perisher resorts Chamber of Commerce, and artistic director david de santi, on producing this fourth annual music festival.
as the event continues to grow each year, the organisers are delivering a program of multifaceted genres appealing to broad tastes, and attracting audiences from around australia. its economic impact is growing in significance - and what a great way to kick-off the winter season in snowy Mountains.
the event also needs to be recognised for its role in stimulating home-grown talent as a valuable crucible for emerging artists.
at tourism snowy Mountains, we are delighted to have facilitated support for the festival through destination nsW and the regional tourism partnership Funding program, as part of our Mountains of events development project.

this may be your first music festival, so here’s some tips:
• once you’ve arrived and have your wristband, find a location to sit down, grab a refreshment and take a few minutes to study the program.
• there are 8 venues to choose from. you can either decide who you want to see and when or just take pot luck! Having a highlighter pen or coloured pen is a good idea. Mark the events you want to catch.
• plan your day allowing adequate time to catch the Free shuttle service around the festival. if the weather is inclement it will obviously take longer to get about.
• remember to have fun, keep warm and dry and be courteous to your fellow patrons when leaving!
• don’t panic if you can’t make up your mind! Chances are you won’t know many of the acts. try and get to all the venues to enjoy the varying atmospheres. this is an intimate and cosy festival so you’ll be up close to the artists. you’ll discover music you’ve never heard or you’ll end up dancing, reciting or just watching. if you don’t like what you see move onto another venue!
• at the end of the day (night) and if you’ve still got energy then hang around the bars (sundeck, smiggins) as the musicians may be up for a tune or two. sometimes the best music is played spontaneously at these late sessions! ask musicians where they will be jamming to confirm the venue.

Known for his rendition of ‘the Man From snowy river’ in 15 different accents and his adventures with sticky tape, the voices and characters in his poems and yarns could be the result of medical experimentation or maybe he’s just a freak of nature. Whichever it is, this three-time australian bush poetry champion brings a multitude of characters to life whenever he performs. great SnoW!!!
Jake taylor, 7 years old
dalgety Public School,
When the snow arrives I shiver –
Just from excitement!
It makes me smile
And fills me with glee.
It’s so fun when the snow’s around.
I make snow angels on the ground.
Even I ski up on the mountains.
It makes me happy!
I feel like there’s a rainbow in the sky...
When the clouds come over
and it starts to rain
I don’t mind because
I come down again – for my lunch.
Then I rise back up the mountains again...

We had skied the Bogong High Plain
and were gathered ’round the fire
in a hut beneath the snowline,
warmth and friendship to acquire,
while reflecting on the doings of the day.
We recalled the thrill of drifting
through the powder, gliding free,
in an isolated region
where mankind would seldom be,
with the worries of the world a world away.
There’d been white-caped silent snow gums
standing sentry, row on row.
There’d been trails of tiny paw prints
tracking pristine, virgin snow.
So we shared the joys and visions we had seen.
We all marvelled at the wonders
of this land’s diversity,
of its snow topped peaks, red outback,
of its beaches by the sea,
nothing like it anywhere we’d ever been.
As we mellowed in the firelight
and the gluhwein warmed us through,
so we looked towards each other
(as one often tends to do)
sharing glimpses of our homes and who we were
The old weathered, creaking hut
was leaning in to hold us close,
in a hushed and hallowed silence,
(just its visitors verbose)
as it strained to hear the stories and confer.
We had come from far flung places,
many different walks of life,
mottled band of well-worn trav’llers,
(weather beaten signs were rife)
with a common love of skiing here to share.
As we proudly told of homelands,
talked of roots and family trees,
one withdrew from contribution,
with her arms hugged ’round her knees,
only embered coals reflected in her stare.
Then she haltingly put forward
she’d no family at all,
just a string of foster parents
that she’d rather not recall,
with her early home a long forgotten place.
She’d been born in Larkspen, England,
lived in every town on earth,
passed around and left unwanted
since her mother died in birth
and her flippancy belied the tragic face.
“Did you say the town of Larkspen?
I could scarce believe I heard.”
said a woman, not much older,
who had hung on every word.
“It’s a tiny little village, scarcely known.”
“There were two of us adopted
and my memory serves me clear.
Did you say your name was Beth, then?
Let me draw the lantern near.”
Ah, the seeds of possibility were sown.
“Too much of a coincidence.
It just could not be true.
And yet - it’s unmistakeable -
I do look a lot like you...”
Oh, the shock of recognition like champagne.
And the wind paused in its whistling
and the hut basked in the glow.
Then four trembling steps were taken
as the tears began to flow,
and two sisters held each other once again.
a 2011 Broken Ski Winning
Poem (open section)...
traILSCarol Heuchan
For more than 20,000 years the Snowy Mountains were home to a number of Aboriginal groups with a unique way of life. The coming of summer each year saw the arrival of large numbers of Aboriginal groups for a time of feasting and ceremonies in the high country. This coincided with the migration of the bogong moth from southern Queensland to the region. The moths were collected by the Aborigines, cooked in hot ash and a very nutritious meal eaten. The mountains were first explored by Europeans in 1835. In 1840, Edmund Strzelecki ascended Mount Kosciuszko and named it after a Polish patriot. The high country was first settled in earnest by European stockmen, graziers and landholders in the early 1800s. This endeavour, immortalised in Banjo Paterson's poem 'The Man from Snowy River', created
a myth that has become part of Australia's identity. In the 1860s thousands of people from across Australia, Europe and Asia flocked to the gold rush town of Kiandra. Miners came in search of wealth and found gold along with a life that could be lived nowhere else in Australia.Skiing as a sport first appeared in Australia, at the goldrush town of Kiandra in 1861. Originally referred to as 'snow shoeing' and later as 'ski running', skiing also served a vital purpose, allowing Kiandra's residents to maintain contact with the outside world when roads were closed by heavy snows.Come the mid 1900s, the Snowy Mountains attracted surveyors, hydrographers and engineers who sought a way to harness the power of the high country's great rivers. The Snowy Mountains
Hydro-Electricity Scheme was launched in 1949, and today it provides power to three states. The project employed a hundred thousand men, two-thirds of whom came from thirty other countries during the post-World War II years taking twenty-five years to complete. The entire project was completed on time and to budget, costing approximately A$820 million.Socially this project symbolises a period during which Australia became an ethnic "melting pot" of the twentieth century but which also changed Australia's character and increased its appreciation for a wide range of cultural diversity.Today, these high mountains have also become a place of recreation and entertainment.

a 2011 Broken Ski Poem
(runner up)...
tHe Fate oF tHe BruMBYd.g.(don) adams
the stallion was restless. despite the lush grass
he niggled and bullied his mares
away from the flats where the cover was sparse.
He wouldn't be caught unaware.
the reason he worried was not really clear;
no sign of the humans who caused him such fear,
no challenging stallion seemed anywhere near.
but still, something warned him- beware!
With quivering nostrils he searched all around,
while in him uneasiness grew.
His ears flicked and reached for the first foreign sound
that told him his instincts were true.
then, poised like a pointer, alert and alive,
he heard a faint buzzing like bees from a hive.
He waited no longer. He knew he must drive
his small herd still further from view.
a sound from his past life, he'd heard it before,
was sure it brought panic and pain.
that strange birds would come with a frightening roar
to drive them again and again.
away to the bush at his urging they sped.
but 'terror birds' caught them and whirled overhead.
Confused by the noise the mob scattered and fled
to danger- the wide open plain.
alarmed, he surged forward to wheel them but they,
in whinnying fear, blundered on.
the 'terror birds' flanked them and, to his dismay,
he knew they were finally gone.
Wherever they bolted those birds seem to loom
to drive them through fences with less and less room,
'til crushed into yards, iron gates clanged their doom!
and death would be host from now on.
but not the great stallion- he'd never submit,
no matter how loud the whips crack.
no halter could hold him, no bridle or bit.
imagine- that horse as a hack?
or slaughtered! great Heavens, could you use a gun
on such a fine creature? no, he's born to run
in dawn's misty light or the hot midday sun-
and only a breeze on his back.
He made for the gullies, the rough broken land,
a 'terror bird' low in pursuit.
a crewman leaned out with a rifle in hand,
and set himself ready to shoot.
but- then he sat back and, still gazing below,
he smiled as he shook his head, murmuring, 'no.
i couldn't shoot you, mate. no. go fella! go!'
and he lifted an arm in salute.
the herd is no longer, the mares and the foals,
all butchered for sale overseas.
no longer to rest by the watering holes
in shade from the sheltering trees.
or frisk and cavort in the first flush of light,
and kick up their heels in exuberant flight.
the stallion? He wanders by day and by night,
still searching and fretting, for he's....
...alone in despair now, so sadly alone.
no more to stand guard on the herd,
or mate with mares, or to fight for his own,
to run, to be free as a bird.
yet he's from a line which had once charged the boers,
had helped carry troops and drag guns in two wars.
With his death they're finished- and we'll be the cause.
and no one is saying a word.
