Let’s work together to bring information to our friends and neighbors to the betterment of our community.

Bob Mariani - General Manager

Committee Activitiesby Bob Mariani

Several of the committees were on full or partial hiatus this summer but are gearing up for important activities or are undergo-ing a change in format. So that you’ll be

aware of what is transpiring, I’ve briefly outlined what you can expect from some of the committees as they serve the Community. SPC (Special Projects Committee): Among other projects that may be assigned to the SPC, this assem-bly will be reviewing the governing documents for the purpose of removing conflicts between, for example, the CC&Rs and Bylaws. The committee may also rec-ommend amendments that are deemed beneficial to the Association and that will bring the governing docu-ments in compliance with State statutes. GAC (Government Affairs Committee): This com-mittee is currently chaired by Jack Evert. He and the committee members are currently planning State can-didate forums to take place in October. Once these fo-rums have been completed, Mr. Evert will step aside as chair of the GAC, and will become the chair of the Properties Committee. Combined with this change, Sally Evert will be appointed as the chair of the GAC. Properties Committee: As noted above, Jack Evert will assume the chair responsibility of this committee and appoint additional members. This committee did not meet during the summer and will have several proj-ects to catch up on during the next few months. Landscape Committee: Due to the thought that there is not a need for a landscape committee that meets on a regular basis, this committee has been disbanded. As projects come along, ad hoc landscape committees will be appointed. Budget and Finance: This committee has been rela-tively inactive over the summer. However, the Board has asked the committee to develop a funding plan for any proposed fitness center project that will be voted on by the membership in March. Marketing: The Marketing Committee will not only be working with the staff in regard to an advertising pro-gram but will also begin to focus on customer service. There are several committees that I did not men-tion, but they are working hard for SCOV and should be thanked for all they do for the Association.

association news

From The Board of DirectorsOur MISSION as the SCOVCA Board is to lead in main-taining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are avail-able online and in the SCOV Library. Board meet-ings are open to residents.

Communityby Janice Fischer

Now that we, who live here year-round have traversed through another Arizona summer, we welcome back those who abandon the rest of us for cooler climates

during the heat in Arizona. We also welcome all the new residents who have joined our community during the past few months. Committees that were dark for the summer begin to come alive once more and the Board of Directors con-tinues the hard work of handling the issues which affect all of us. Community is defined as people who reside in one lo-cality and are subject to the same rules and regulations, the common sharing and participation of common inter-ests. Our common interests and diverse backgrounds define our community and make Sun City Oro Valley a vibrant, alive community. We have been fortunate to have a group of individuals, both past and present, who have given of their time, energy and knowledge, year in and year out, keeping our community functioning like a well-oiled machine. We should be proud of past accom-plishments but there is much work that still needs to be done to inform our friends and neighbors of what goes on in our community. Your participation and information is an important part of making our community the best it can be. We are in need of volunteers to populate the various committees that keep us functioning and informed. We all have something to contribute from our other lives or from our experiences outside SCOV. Even if you are not chosen to serve on a specific committee, you may at-tend the meetings and contribute your knowledge and/or experience. You might suggest something no one knew before and it may be useful information. Your input is important and necessary. The Board of Directors’ policy dictates that a chairper-son serves from May 1-April 30 each year and commit-tee members serve the same one-year term. A chair-person can serve a two-year term and a committee member can serve for three years. If you are interested, know that your volunteer term may only last 1 year, un-less the Board of Directors votes to extend a volunteer’s term. I challenge those who can and/or have a desire to serve, both new and longtime residents, to volunteer for any committee which may be of interest to you. If you do not know what that committee does, attend and see if it is something in which you are interested in. I also challenge each and every one of you to at-tend the meetings and, if interested, join that committee.

Community Assistance CommitteeChair George Holthus 818-1042; Carolyn Carson 825-1514 Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for Sun City Oro Valley. Deposit only empty, clean aluminum cans in the box outside the Social Hall kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans, which attract bees and may become a hazard. CAC volunteers delivered their first load of cans for the fiscal year, 500 pounds which netted $280. The Community Assistance Committee operates the Loan Room, located at the end of the Cart Barn. The Loan Room offers medical equipment, roll-away beds and cots, tables and chairs and some children’s equip-ment for loan to residents of SCOV. Now is a good time to make reservations at the Loan Room for items you may need for welcome-back parties and the com-ing holidays. The Loan Room is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM.

Fitness Center CommitteeBob Mariani 917-8064Wednesday, 1-4 PM, Social Hall/Papago. Based on a community survey and other input, a list with important items to be considered in the fitness center was developed and shared with four architects. The committee voted unanimously to recommend to the Board STG Designs which was involved in the de-sign of some of our original buildings. STG is currently designing fitness centers for active adult communities for Del Webb/Pulte and well aware of the active adult market. The committee feels a project cost of around $1.6 mil-lion would be better received by the community. Three different schemes being considered will be reviewed by the committee. At the FCC’s recommendation Board approval was given for STG’s proposal and $15,000 was allocated for the preparation of three conceptual designs and a final plan for presentation to the community, including a statement of probable cost. The FCC will review and recommend a single plan to the Board for approval and

further community approval. The Board also directed the Finance & Budget Com-mittee to come up with funding options for the project.

Check out the Artist of the Month display in the center front window. Sandy and Curt Gates are jewelry mak-ers extraordinaire. Their original jewelry would make wonderful gifts as well as a real treat for any of us. The holidays are fast approaching, so now is the time to select one of their one-of-a-kind pieces. Mark your calendar for this year’s Arts and Crafts Festival, Saturday, November 3. The Social Hall will be brimming with items to suit every taste.

Have You Recently Returned? If you just returned from being away for awhile, the mon-soon season this year caused trees, grasses, shrubs and weeds to really grow. Pre-emergence applied to your yard will stop the germination of seeds, therefore you won’t have as many weeds next year. Check with your landscaper or pest control professional. Don’t for-get to remove weeds in cracks of your driveway, side-walk and where the cement meets the blacktop of the street. Plants protruding over sidewalks need trimming back so as not to injure passing walkers. Trees at cor-ners need trimming so stop signs may be seen. Suckers under trees should also be cut off down to the ground. Take a close look from the street–can you see the num-bers on your house, day and night? For safety’s sake, trim back any plant, or change light bulbs, if your house

number is not clearly visible. This is important should an emergency vehicle need to find you. Welcome back, and please continue to take pride in your property.

Robin Coulter - Assistant ManagerResort Fee

On a recent trip, we were charged a $25 resort fee. The hotel presented us with a card listing the services this fee covered. While I had an internal argument with my-

self about why the fee wasn’t just included in the price of the room (since I didn’t have the option to not pay the fee), I was reasonably impressed with their list and hadn’t thought of the many benefits I receive when staying at this particular hotel. Often, it’s the little things that make something really special. This reminded me of the many benefits available to SCOV residents. It might be good to remind you of these because perhaps, like me, you may have forgot-ten or not been aware of some of them. Did you know you can read the AZ Daily Star at the Kachina Lounge? Also, we currently have four WiFi lo-cations (Social Hall, Vistoso Center, Café and Catalina Vista). The Desert Oasis will have WiFi soon. If you’re in need of a public notary this service is provided to you at no charge at the Vistoso Center. All residents take 10% off meals at the Café and 15% off the public rack rate for golf and many merchandise items in the Pro Shop, excluding sale items and golf balls. There are very few golf courses that allow walkers and riders during off hours, but we do and it is a beau-tiful place to spot some of our desert flora, fauna and wildlife. There are not many active adult communities that have monitors in their buildings to provide the level of customer service available to SCOV residents. This list could go on and on and I may have missed your favorite amenity, but it’s a good reminder of what a wonderful place SCOV is and why it is a premier ac-tive adult community.

Pam Sarpalius - Programs/Facilities DirectorOctober

October means different things in differ-ent parts of the country. When I lived in Il-linois, it meant falling leaves, shorter day-light hours and colder weather on the way.

All this meant was that things were slowing down. But in Sun City Oro Valley, it means busy times are start-ing. Clubs and committees start up their meetings af-ter a summer’s rest, we greet our seasonal residents and share what we all did over the summer months and start to plan for family and friends to come visit us over the winter to escape the cold and snow. We are lucky to be in such an active community and area that offers us so much to do. Take advantage of all that SCOV has to offer and plan to visit an attraction in the Tucson area that you have been wanting to see.

Feeding Our Wild Animal Friends Oro Valley Police Department Crime Prevention Of-ficers have received numerous complaints of preda-tor animals entering populated areas and/or attacking pets. One of the reasons these animals may enter resi-dential property is to find food. They are attracted to pet food leftovers, bird feeders and other edible materials that might be present. The Arizona Game and Fish De-partment recommends citizens pick up pet food dishes immediately after feeding, refrain from using bird feed-ers and keep patio/yard areas free of pet waste and other materials that attract wide animals. Also, please remember that it is unlawful to feed and/or provide drink for nondomesticated animals. See the following description of the Oro Valley Town Code 18-4-1 which governs feeding predatory animals. Violation of Article 18-4-1 is a Civil Infraction punishable by a monetary fine.

ARTICLE 18-4-1 No person shall feed and/or provide drink at any time for one (1) or more nondomesticated mammalian pred-ators including, but not limited to, coyotes, raccoons, foxes, javelinas, skunks and opossums. To keep wildlife away from your yard, try to remove access to things that could be attracting unwanted ani-mals, including:• Birdseed. Make sure to feed birds in an enclosed yard, preferably with a feeder and a tray to prevent seed from falling on the ground. Place seed blocks in an enclosed area or on a raised platform.• Water sources, including dog dishes, ponds and foun-tains.• Vegetation, including flowering or non-native plants and fruit that have fallen from trees.• Garbage.• Pet food. To report someone for feeding wildlife, call the Opera-tion Game Thief hot line 1-800-352-0700.

SCOV Library Meet Our New Librarian Marnie Goodbody

It gives me great pleasure to accept the position of Sun City Oro Valley Li-brarian. A recent Sun City Oro Valley resident, I moved here from Sydney, Australia, where I was a college librar-ian. Before that, I worked in and man-aged libraries in Washington, DC and Maryland. Everyone I talk to is enthusiastically supportive of our library, with its informal, friendly atmo-sphere and I am excited to be able to contribute to its future. I envision a library that strengthens our sense of community, fosters friendships, supports community groups and encourages life-long learning. It is your li-brary, and I welcome your suggestions and comments.

Friends of the Library Your membership in the Friends of the Library expires at the end of June each year so please remember to renew it now if you have not already done so. The Li-brary depends on your donations to purchase books and videos. Just ask a library volunteer for a member-ship form.

Lonnie Davis - Recreation and Fitness Is it better to break up my exercise sessions, or exercise longer?

There are two distinct thoughts on this issue: both pres-ent fairly reasonable arguments. First, it takes 15-20 minutes to get your metabolism into the fat-burning zone that many people desire for an aero-bic workout. Once you have reached this level, your body tends to obtain more of its energy from fat than carbohy-drates. Using this argument, a single 90-minute workout will allow you to exercise in this fat-burning-zone for at least 70 minutes while two 45-minute sessions would al-low you to be in this zone for at least 50 minutes (2 x 25). This logic supports a single, longer workout. Second, for six or so hours after a workout, your body remains in after-burn mode, burning more calories at rest than it would have if you had not worked out. Using this logic, two sessions would produce two after-burn-peri-ods and result in more fat being burned than for a single workout session. The real bottom line is that if you exercise for 90 min-utes a day, you’re interested in more than just fitness (don’t get me wrong, this is perfectly OK). To stay in reasonable cardiovascular shape, you need to perform aerobically for 20-30 minutes at least three times a week. If you wish to be in better than the minimum acceptable shape, remember that the returns are not geometric—you won’t be in twice as good shape if you work out for twice as long. Kim Griggs - Head Golf ProfessionalWelcome back everyone! We hope you had a great summer and are ready for an-other fun season at The Views Golf Club. The staff is certainly ready for another busy year and we are eager to serve our golfers, residents and nonresidents to the very best of our ability.

The GolfNow program continues to be a success, as does inviting outside groups to experience our spectacular golf course. These groups will be booked around our annual pass holder times as much as pos-sible. Please remember that pass holders do have a nine day advanced booking option. Stop by the Pro Shop to pick up a Pass Holder benefit card to keep up with special benefits for pass holders. The golf course is currently closed for overseeding and will remain so through Thursday,October 11. We will reopen Friday October 12 and will be cart-path-only until Saturday, October 27. Our schedule will be as follows when we reopen: tee time days, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday will begin at 7:30 AM; Tuesday’s Shotgun will begin at 11:30 AM and will include The Views Women’s Golf club and lim-ited open play (pass holders, please take advantage of your advance booking option on this day),Wednesday’s shotguns 8 AM and 12:30 PM. Thursday’s Shotguns will be 8 AM and 11 AM. All traffic, pedestrian or vehicu-lar, during overseeding and in October must remain on the cart paths to protect our immature grass.

Michael Kropf - Superintendent In previous years, October was a wel-come sight for the golf course. The fair-ways, tees and greens had been over-seeded with a new coat of winter rye grass that hid all the bare areas from the previous summer. The golfers quick-ly forgot about all of those areas as the

new grass was so beautiful with a new thick canopy to play on which hid the problems underneath. How-ever, this summer the fairways received an extensive re-grassing project early in the summer so there were almost no bare areas to hide during overseeding. The golf course was already beautiful with a thick canopy of Bermuda grass going into overseeding this year. The major goal of establishing the summer grass early was accomplished. There are several benefits for having a good Bermu-da grass base going into overseeding. The Bermuda grass provides an ideal environment for germinating rye grass seed. The seed is protected from the wind and heat while also maintaining good moisture. The bare areas left the seed exposed to the elements so extra water and mulch were required to help the seed establish. The biggest advantage is the reduction in water required to germinate the seed. When too much water is applied, the ground becomes so saturated the seed sitting in low areas doesn’t germinate. This ex-tends the time period required to get a good playing

surface because all the low areas need to dry before that seed starts to grow. All the work to get good fairways this summer was not only for great summer conditions but also great winter conditions.

Golf AdvisoryChair Preston Sheriff 825-3101First Wednesday, 2 PM, Vistoso Center/Apache Welcome back golfers and seasonal residents. Su-perintendent Mike Kropf was thanked by all those pres-ent for the great job he and his staff have done on the course this summer. The course is now closed for over-seeding and will reopen Friday, October 12. This year holes number 6, 9, 11 and 16 will not be over-seeded. All our golf clubs will be converting to the USGA’s handicapping system, GHIN. This change will take place in October. If you have any questions, both the AGA and AWGA websites have information about this change. Both Kim and Rick, and representatives from the clubs, will be attending training classes in early Oc-tober. Over the last few months you might have noticed the golf team from CDO high school using our facilities. They want to thank our community for the opportunity to practice and play here. The next meeting is October 3.

featureSCOV Artists Prepare for the4th Annual Arts & Crafts Fair

by Nancy Njaa “A painting should be interesting,” says Judy Bjorling, “not just the first time you look at it, but every time. You should always find something new to like.”

Artist Judy Bjorling and one of her paintings.

Judy is one ofover 60 artists and craftspeople participating in this year’s Arts and Craft Fes-tival Saturday, November 3. As a senior in high school, she won a Na-tional Scholas-tic Art Awards scholarship and attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. However, while work-ing part-time she was diverted into a business career. Later she returned to school and after receiving her MBA went on to run a successful consulting business that included Fortune 500 clients. In 1989 an owner of an early water color asked, “So why is it you are not painting?” This question resonated with her feelings at the time, and she soon returned to her artistic interests. Before long, she became a full-time artist. In 1991 Judy took up sculpting in clay, working from models. Since 1993: her watercolors, drawings, sculp-tures, and prints have appeared in regional and inter-national exhibits and her artwork is owned by private and corporate collectors. She has taught painting and sculpture to students both privately and through vari-ous organizations. Judy first painted in watercolor but now works in all media, frequently combining them. Critics have said that color and movement are the elements that define her abstract painting style. Believing it’s texture that has been most important in her current work, she usu-ally creates a highly-textured background and then lay-ers subject matter on top of that. Her most recent works are in acrylic on canvas and are totally non-objective (i.e., no definable subject matter), and in only variants of three colors: red, yellow and blue. Examples of Judy Bjorling’s work may be seen at this year’s Arts and Crafts Festival.

tHank you cornerThis section allows residents to express thanks to the community. Ar-ticles should not exceed 50 words and should not contain thanks to specific persons.

I wish to thank my golfing compadres and the Commu-nity Center and Golf Club staffs for what you bring to each week of the year. We said goodbye to Jane on September 10. We will remember her...she will remember you.

Ed Bakke Hugs and thank yous to all my wonderful caring neigh-bors and friends who guided and supported me through Bob’s many health problems and during his recent pass-ing. God bless all of you!

Lynn Fellows

During this time of sorrow we know what our family and friends mean to us. We are ever grateful for your prayers, flowers, cards and kindness you have shown to us.

The Michael Murphy Family

William (Bill) Ransom passed away of cancer on August 29 quietly at home here in Sun City Vistoso. His wife of 50 years Emily would like to express her gratitude for all of the calls, cards, and offers of help and support. You have all been wonderful at this difficult time, thank you so much.

The Ransom Family

We want to thank our friends for your expressions of love, thoughtfulness and concern during my surgery and recovery from breast cancer. All the cards, phone calls, emails, visits and meals were greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Kathy & Richard Roelke

The position of Sun City Librarian has been the most rewarding experience of my retirement years. I have thor-oughly enjoyed the opportunity to learn something entirely new and have had great fun doing it. It has also been a great satisfaction to participate, with a superb group of volunteers, in the unprecedented growth of the library. Meeting so many wonderful residents has been an un-expected reward of living in SCOV. The support I’ve re-ceived these many years I’ve been at the library and the many friends I’ve made has been overwhelming at times. Thanks to those who have helped make my departure a happy event. Come in and meet your new librarian, Marnie Goodbody. You will be in excellent hands!

Book ClubsBook Club

Lillian Vittenson 825-5522, Eileen Rotman 825-5434 First Monday, 1:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Pima

Though the name of the author and the title of the book were omitted from last month’s Tipster, we will be discussing Emma Donoghue’s Room on October 1 with newcomer Sue MacDonald as our leader. The subject of confinement, especially as understood from the perspective of a child, offers interesting pos-sibilities for analysis.

Our November selection ventures into the realm of medical ethics and scientific discovery as depicted in Rebecca Skloot’s non-fiction account of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Join us to examine the poten-tial conflicting motivations of protecting and respect-ing individual human lives while furthering research in an effort to save the lives of others. Add a profit incentive and the issue becomes more complex and the need for moral (and legal) parameters more com-pelling.

Great BooksPres. Barbara Gates 825-7645; VP, Sharyn Rafieyan 825-6762October-May, First and Third Wednesdays, 2 PM, Catalina Vista/Tohono After a summer filled with reading, relaxation and re-flecting, our new season begins with a month-long ex-amination of Marcel Proust’s Overture, the first selec-tion from Living with the Past, available from The Great Books Foundation, www.greatbooks.org for just $5. Due to the length of this year’s selections, many have been divided into two or three readings with different discussion leaders for each. This not only lessens the number of pages to be read, but also broadens our interpretations of the works as different leaders focus on different aspects. Proust himself says “The only real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes”. Voyaging through these great writings and sharing the experience with others adds new dimension to our vision, our under-standing of the work and, perhaps, of life itself. We meet October 3 and 17.

Writers ClubAdrian Korpel 818-0544 At present the Writers Club’s only organized activities are in poetry. Please see the Poet’s Corner. Poets’ CornerSharyn Rafieyan 825-6762Mondays, 9:30-11:30 AM, Desert Oasis/Aztec Unlike artists who create images with the stroke of a brush, poets conjure images with pen strokes or keystrokes. While artists might disagree with his con-clusion, poet Rick Barot discusses the difference be-tween images and details in The Wooden Overcoat proclaiming that “the difference doesn’t matter, except in poetry”. In this poem someone refers to a coffin as a wooden overcoat “an image so heavy and warm at the same time that you forget it’s about death”. Using imagery is an effective poetic tool that enhanc-es the poem and enables the reader to grasp exactly what the writer wishes to convey. Writers have a whole toolbox to help them with their craft. They also rely on their fellow craftsmen and women. Join our weekly workshop for advice, encouragement and often a dose of amusement.
