2012 ANNUAL REPORT

We found homes for 9,617 companion animals in 2012. We ad-opted out more pets than any other shelter facility in Wisconsin, and we never set time or space limits on how long an animal stays in our adoption program. “As long as it takes,” is our stead-fast committment to the dogs, cats and small animals seeking a second chance in a new home. In 2012, the average stay for a dog in adoption: 2 days; average stay for a cat in adoption: 3.3 days.

8,263 children ages 2-18 were reached through classroom pro-grams, Camp Critter, the PAL program, Project CARE, PACK, Scout Nights, Story Times, Gosling Guild and Club BARK, Read to Rover, Birthday Parties, Young Advocates Club and outreach programs.

7,276 spay/neuter surgeries were performed in 2012, including 739 surgeries for our Spay Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) for animals from low-income homes. Spay/neuter continues to be critical in reducing the number of homeless animals in our community. WHS did 543 dentals and 184 surgical procedures other than dentals, including “cherry eye” repairs, tumor remov-als, amputations and fracture repair.

An incredible 1,169 volunteers dedicated their times and talents to the Milwaukee and Ozaukee Campuses in 2012. That’s over 57,662 hours in one year alone! Volunteers make miracles hap-pen for the animals every single day.

More than 60 Milwaukee police officers were trained in 2012 about best practices in animal abuse law enforcement at an AS-PCA seminar hosted by WHS. We also served 20 animals and 9 families as part of the new program, Safe Haven, which provides temporary shelter for animals affected by domestic violence.

In 2012, our Wildlife Rehabilitation Center cared for 5,179 wild animals of 149 different species. Staff and volunteers performed 1,043 wildlife rescues, and 180 volunteers dedicated their ener-gies to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing Milwaukee’s urban wildlife.

990 dogs participated in classes and workshops in 2012, and behavior staff performed over 1,000 personal consultations for members of the public. We extended outreach for special needs dogs, placing 169 dogs into “Shelter Smart II,” a specialty shelter program for behavior rehabilitation, made possible by a grant from The Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust, a Keybank Trust.

The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) is an animal welfare organization whose mission is to build a community where people value animals and treat them with respect and kind-ness. WHS provides temporary animal shel-ter to thousands of stray, abandoned and in-jured animals each year. WHS is the largest animal shelter in Wisconsin and was founded in 1879. WHS receives no general govern-ment funding and relies entirely on the com-munity’s support to fund lifesaving initiatives.
