Hoke County Schools recently broke ground on a new Middle School—Sandy Grove Middle—which will be the first newly constructed school in the state financed through a public-private partnership. Metcon Construction is the Construction Manager at Risk for the 75,000-square-foot facility that will serve 600 students.

The school system wants the project to set a precedent for leadership in energy and environmental design. The school will be a “Net Zero” facility that incorporates extensive LEED and Green Building components including large Photo Voltaic and Geo-thermal systems. It is the 1st “Net Zero” school in North Carolina and the first privatized, net zero building in the nation that incorporates QSCBs, NMTCs and solar tax credits. The school is designed to achieve LEED GOLD certification.

As a result, the school will generate more electricity onsite than it consumes; excess energy will be sold to a utility company and will serve as a source of revenue for the school system.

The new school is being financed through an innovative public-private partnership that has never been used in North Carolina for school financing.

Firstfloor K-12 Solutions and SFL+a Architects is partnering with Metcon Construction to help make their vision a reality. Partnering with Metcon has been integral to the project’s success.

Robbie Ferris, President and CEO of SFL+a Architects, commented on Metcon’s vital role in the project, referencing their construction expertise and their overall commitment to the project.

“As you can imagine it’s a very complex project not only from a design standpoint but from a legal standpoint. Metcon has been that partner that we’ve needed, absolutely essential to make that project a success,” said Ferris.

The project is located at the corner of Chason and Arabia road in Lumber Bridge, NC.

Robeson County Commissioners, State representatives and other local leaders gathered in late April to celebrate the completion of the long-awaited multi-purpose pavilion at the Southeastern N.C. Agricultural Center in Lumberton.

Speakers at the ribbon-cutting celebration–including state commissioner of agriculture Steve Troxler– emphasized the opportunities for economic growth the facility brings.

“If we continue to move forward, this will be a huge economic engine for Southeastern North Carolina,” Troxler said. ‘This is just the beginning.”

Several events have already been held. The Borderbelt Horseman’s Association held a horse show and the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina held their annual “Dance of the Spring Moon” Powwow in May.

The facility was funded in part from a $3.7 million allotment from the state General Assembly and a $1.2 million contribution from the state Golden LEAF Foundation.

The building includes office space, restrooms and other support space. Eventually, other amenities such as stalls for horses, air conditioning and a more permanent flooring (for non-livestock events) will be added.

The NC Indian Economic Development Initiative (NCIEDI) is partnering with Woodline Solutions to provide “LEEDing The Way... Green Education Courses” to their members and partners.

On June 1st, representatives from Woodline Solutions taught a six-hour “LEED 101” course at the Metcon Corporate Office in Pembroke. This course is designed to introduce contractors and suppliers to LEED standards and green building concepts. Understanding the terms, categories and classifications associated with new sustainability trends are key to success in the green building market.

The course—and the associated one-hour weekly study sessions–will prepare program participants to take the LEED Green Associate Exam to receive their LEED Green Associate credential. This credential attests to the candidate’s knowledge of good environmental practice and skill, and reflects an understanding and support of green

design, construction and operations. The LEED Green Associate credential is the first step towards becoming a LEED Accredited Professional.

JocCole “J.C.” Burton of Woodline Solutions led the training session. Ms. Burton has more than 15 years of development, program management and construction experience. She has penned several published articles, most relating to sustainability; she remains on the forefront of implementing green technologies and standards.

Tony Hayes, NCIEDI Chief Executive Officer, commended workshop attendees for their commitment to bettering themselves and their companies, and spoke briefly about the need for green education throughout the state.

As part of the training initiative, program participants agreed to track their progress towards achieving LEED certifications and record any associated future successes they may be able to achieve due to the specialized training.

We talked about how do we bring green education to the American Indian community because of the lack of green that was in the Indian community–and in the minority community overall–and we’re just extremely happy that we can hopefully do something together to benefit all of us moving forward,” said Tony Hayes.
