MAL M. MOOREA T H L E T I C S D I R E C T O R

Th e University of Alabama’s Director of Athletics since 1999, Mal Moore has made an indelible mark on one of the nation’s most storied athletic programs, leading a department that has enjoyed tremendous success athletically and academically while enjoying an unprecedented period of growth during his tenure.

Th rough his guidance, Alabama’s athletic department remains focused on his vision of having all Crimson Tide athletic teams and student-athletes competitive at the highest level nationally while continuing to elevate athletic facilities at the Capstone to premier status nationally for all sports.

During his tenure as Director of Athletics, Moore has overseen more than $200 million of capital improvements to University of Alabama athletic facilities. Th ose projects have encompassed the entire scope of all Crimson Tide athletic programs and have benefi tted every Alabama student-athlete, coach, and administrator.

Th roughout his multi-faceted career, Moore has worked with a diversifi ed fi eld of constituents, from fellow coaches and former players, to fans and the business com-munity. All of those experiences and relationships - in addition to his ability to unify those many constituents - have made him the ideal person to lead Alabama athletics in the 21st century.

His leadership has been crucial in helping guide Alabama through a period that has been, at times, extremely challenging. His guidance and eff ort helped Alabama ath-letics weather the storm, while continuing to move in a positive direction toward a future that holds great promise.

Moore’s dedication to, and love of, the University of Alabama was recognized on March 28, 2007, when as a permanent tribute to his lifelong contributions to Th e University of Alabama, the Board of Trustees of Th e University of Alabama System offi cially dedicated the facility formerly known as Th e Football Building as the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility.

Under Moore’s direction, Alabama’s athletic teams have produced three national championships – the 2009 football title and the 2002 and 2011 NCAA gymnastics championships – as well as several Southeastern Conference championships, win-ning titles in football, gymnastics, men’s basketball, women’s golf, men’s golf, men’s cross country, baseball and softball; taking SEC tournament titles in both baseball and softball. Alabama athletes have earned some of the highest honors the SEC and NCAA have to off er, including SEC Athlete of the Year, SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, NCAA Top VIII, NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and NCAA Sportsperson of the Year. Th ese honors are over and above the individual conference and national ti-tles that Alabama athletes continue to bring home to the Capstone on a regular basis.

In addition to making his mark on Alabama, Moore has also had a national impact as a key member of several prestigious NCAA and college football committees. Moore has served on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee, the SEC Athletic Directors Bowl Advisory Committee and the Big Six Conferences Minority Coaches Forum.

Moore’s distinguished record of service to UA began more than 50 years ago when he joined the Crimson Tide football squad as a scholarship player for Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1958-62. Moore has the distinction of being a part of eight national championship teams (1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992 and 2009) with the fi rst coming as a player, the next six during his coaching career and the most re-cent during his tenure as director of athletics. As a player and coach, he was also part of 14 SEC championships and 27 bowl trips. He is the only individual connected with the Alabama program to be a part of eight national championships.

During a coaching career that spanned 31 years, Moore spent 22 of those at Ala-bama with stops at Montana State, Notre Dame and the NFL’s St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals. At Alabama, Moore started as a graduate assistant under Coach Bryant in 1964, then as defensive backfi eld coach for six seasons (1965-70) before becoming quarterbacks coach from 1971-82, serving as the Tide’s fi rst off ensive coordinator starting in 1975. He would go on to coordinate all of the off ensive plays for several of Alabama’s national championship football teams.

A 1963 graduate of Th e University of Alabama, Moore holds both an undergradu-ate degree in sociology and a 1964 Master’s degree in secondary education from the Capstone. Moore was born December 19, 1939, in Dozier, Ala. He and the late Mrs. Charlotte Moore have one daughter, Mrs. Steve (Heather) Cook of Scottsdale, Ariz., a granddaughter, Anna Lee, and a grandson, Charles Cannon.

Billy Pate, who is entering his 10th season at the helm of the Alabama men’s tennis team, has built a program that is consistently among the nation’s best. Over the past nine years, Pate has led his squads to a Crimson Tide record seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including a pair of trips to the NCAA Sweet 16.

Th roughout his tenure, he has coached fi ve indi-viduals that have advanced to either the NCAA Singles or Doubles Championships on seven oc-casions. In addition, Pate has guided six of his teams to the top 40 of the fi nal national rank-ings, with three of those teams fi nishing in the top 20.

Th e 2011 season saw the Tide collect 10 wins including a pair against Southeastern Confer-ence foes. Alabama came back from a fi rst round loss at the prestigious Blue Gray National Ten-nis Classic to claim the consolation draw fi nals in February. During last season, Pate was also instrumental in developing Daniil Proskura, who was one of six league rookies named to the All-SEC Freshman Team.

In 2010, Pate’s team fi nished with a 13-14 re-cord appearing in a fi fth-straight NCAA Tour-nament. Th e 2010 season also saw one of the most successful all-around student-athletes in program history in senior Saketh Myneni. Myneni entered the season as the No. 10 singles player in the nation, tying the highest ranking ever by a Tide player. In addition, he became the program’s fi rst SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year and fi rst ESPN Th e Magazine Academic All-American.

Th e 2009 squad compiled a 21-8 record and fi nished 16th in the fi nal rankings. Alabama earned the right to be one of the 16 host teams for the NCAA First and Second Rounds, the

fi rst time a team had done that in school history. Th e Tide also had two players and two doubles teams fi nish in the top 100 in the nation. Four players fi nished the season with at least 20 wins, including an impressive 32-9 record from senior Michael Jung.

Th e 2008 season was another successful one un-der Pate as the team fi nished No. 24 while com-piling 19 wins along the way. Alabama opened the year with seven-straight victories and took down several ranked opponents. In 2007, Pate led his squad to its best fi nish and highest team ranking since 1993. Th e 14th-ranked Crimson Tide made its second consecu-tive trip to the NCAA tournament where Ala-bama cruised by East Tennessee State and upset Duke to make its fi rst trip to the Sweet 16 since 2003. Juniors Daniel Buikema and Mathieu Th ibaudeau qualifi ed for the NCAA tourna-ment as the 23rd-ranked tandem and earned their fi rst spot in the doubles draw. Buikema and Th ibaudeau became only the 13th doubles pair in Alabama’s tennis history to compete in the NCAA doubles draw. Th e team’s success earned Pate recognition as well. Th e 2007 SEC Co-Coach of the Year earned the South Region Coach of the Year honor from the Intercollegiate Tennis Associa-tion (ITA), after transforming Alabama tennis into a Southern powerhouse in a region that fea-tures the nation’s fi ercest competition. In 2006, Pate led Alabama to its fi rst winning season in three years and a berth to the NCAA tournament. Under Pate’s guidance, junior Jo-seph Jung made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament’s singles draw and posted his third 20-win season. Jung would achieve an-other 20-win season in 2007, the only Alabama player in history to reach that accomplishment. Pate’s fi rst recruit at Alabama, Jung fi nished the 2006 season nationally ranked three times and led the Tide from the No. 1 singles slot the ma-jority of his career.

Mississippi State, 1992

BillyPATE

In his fi rst year at the Capstone, Pate led Ala-bama to its fi rst trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 in fi ve years. Th e Tide defeated Marist and Harvard before falling to Baylor. Pate made his move to Division I college ten-nis in 2000 when he joined Bobby Bayliss’ staff at the University of Notre Dame. During Pate’s stint with the Irish, Notre Dame consis-tently fi nished in the Top 10 nationally, ranking as high as No. 4 nationally. In 2002, Pate was named National and Region IV Assistant Coach of the Year by the ITA. As a part of the Irish coaching staff , Pate was the recruiting coordina-tor and served as the team’s primary liaison to the strength and conditioning program. No stranger to success, Pate came to the Cap-stone after an illustrious coaching tenure at Georgia Perimeter College. In four years at GPC, Pate’s teams posted a 87-43 record and won three consecutive Junior College National Championships. Th e three-time recipient of the Max Grubbs Award, given to the National Junior College Coach of the Year, has been named Coach of the Year 13 diff erent times by fi ve organizations, including the United States Professional Tennis Association, the ITA, Georgia Professional Ten-nis Association and the National Junior College Athletic Association. Prior to his position at Georgia Perimeter, Pate served as the assistant coach of Atlanta Th under of the World Team Tennis League, and in con-junction with his position with the Th under, he was the Stadium Operations Director and Com-munity Relations Director from 1993-1995.

Pate received his undergraduate degree in 1992 while playing tennis at Mississippi State. He earned his Master’s Degree in Sports Adminis-tration from Georgia State in 1995.

Former Ball State assistant coach Jeff Nevolo is enter-ing his fi rst season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Crimson Tide. Nevolo, a native of Gurnee, Ill., graduated from Ball State University with a master’s degree in executive development for public service in May.
