Definitions of Medical Specialties

tissues and organs of the body that cause or are caused by disease .

Pediatrics deals with the study of the development of children and adolescents including the treatment and prevention of childhood diseases .

Psychiatry deals with the diagnosis and treatment of mental, emotional and behavioral health disorders .

Pulmonary Medicine (Pulmonology) deals with the diagnosis and treatment of the respiratory system, such as chronic obstructive lung disease, emphysema, and asthma .

Radiology deals with the use of X-ray, mammography, CT scan, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, MRI and procedures to visualize the body and its organs .

Rheumatology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis and other diseases of the joints, muscles and bones .

Urology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of the urinary tract in men and women, as well as the male reproductive system .

Anesthesiology deals with the administration of anesthetics to alleviate pain and suppress consciousness, as well as monitor aand support life functions during surgery . This specialty also deals with the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain .

Cardiology deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the heart and blood vessels .

Ear, Nose, and Throat (Otolaryngology) deals with the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the ear, nose, and throat .

Emergency Medicine deals with the evaluation and treatment of unexpected injury and illness such as accidents, heart attack, and respiratory failure .

Family Medicine deals with the provision of continuing and comprehensive primary healthcare for patients of all ages and all medical problems .

Gastroenterology deals with the treatment of disorders of the digestive system and diseases of the stomach, intestine, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas .

General Surgery deals with a wide range of surgical procedures, including the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques .

Gynecology deals with the medical and surgical treatment of women’s diseases, including endocrinology, reproductive, and urinary functions .

Hematology/Oncology deals with the treatment of diseases of the blood and blood-making tissues and cancer .

Hospitalists are physicians whose clinical practice is hospital medicine, and they typically do not have a private practice . The Oconee Medical Center hospitalists are Family Medicine and Internal Medicine physicians providing primary care coverage for adult

patients without a physician preference who present to the Emergency Department . In some cases, the patient has a physician in the general vicinity who does not come to the hospital but resumes care once the patient is discharged .Infectious Diseases deals with the treatment of a disease process as it relates to an infectious disease and/or the suppression of the immune system .Internal Medicine deals with adult medicine to include special study and training focusing on the prevention and treatment of adult diseases . You may hear physicians in this specialty referred to by several terms including “internists,” “general internists” and “doctors of internal medicine .” Internists are equipped to deal with whatever problem a patient brings – no matter how common or rare, or how simple or complex . They are specially trained to solve puzzling diagnostic problems and can handle severe chronic illnesses and situations where several different illnesses may strike at the same time .

Nephrology deals with the kidneys, their functions and diseases .

Neurology deals with the treatment of diseases and disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system .

Obstetrics deals with care for women before, during, and after pregnancy, and at menopause, as well as the medical and surgical treatment of the female reproductive and urinary systems .

Ophthalmology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of vision disorders and diseases of the eye .

Orthopaedics deals with the treatment of deformities, diseases, and injuries of the bones, joints, and muscles .Pathology deals with the study of body tissue and fluids relating to the structural and functional changes in the

What does it mean to hold Active Staff status?

Physicians who hold Active Staff status at Oconee Medical Center regularly admit or are involved in the care of a minimum of twelve (12) patients per year at Oconee Medical Center .

What does it mean to hold Senior Active Staff status?

Physicians who hold Senior Active Staff status at Oconee Medical Center have served on the Active Staff for a minimum of twenty-five (25) years and/or are a member of the Active Staff and have reached a specified age.

What does it mean to hold Consulting Staff status?

Physicians who hold Consulting Staff status at Oconee Medical Center do not admit patients to the

hospital but provide consultative services to patients at the request of an Active or Senior Active Staff physician . They may also provide expertise in a specialty or subspecialty that is not otherwise available from an Active or Senior Active Staff physician .

What does it mean to hold Affiliate Staff status with clinical privileges?

Physicians who hold Affiliate Staff status with clinical privileges at Oconee Medical Center do not regularly practice at the hospital but provide coverage for one or more members of the Active or Senior active Staff in the same specialty or sub-specialty with like clinical privileges . Patients admitted or treated by a physician providing coverage will be transferred to the Active or Senior Active Staff member for whom coverage is being provided as soon as practical .
