Web Application Firewall Market Overview The Southeast Asia Web Application Firewall (WAF) market registered a healthy growth of 13.0 percent on a Year-on-Year (YoY) basis. The healthy growth experienced in the market segment was mainly contributed by an accelerated paradigm shift in IT security. This new paradigm - as epitomized by the arrival of new concepts surrounding ‘webified’ business processes, cloud computing and mobile computing - has definitely introduced different challenges for enterprises on both the business and technology fronts. The security convention known to most enterprises would be to adopt the firewall as the first line of defense in a network security setup. However, due to the growing sophistication of cyber attacks, as well as changes in user behaviors, the protection offered by the traditional firewall is increasingly insufficient to handle the threats of today and tomorrow. In many cases, “malware” such as worms and bots, are entering networks on ports typically left open by most traditional firewalls, thus leaving the networks in a precarious position. Consequently, enterprises in Southeast Asia have started to realize that the WAF can help them identify malicious traffic that traditional firewalls cannot, thus leading to greater adoption in the region. In addition, the proliferation of mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets was also key in facilitating the migration of business processes over to the Web. As a result of this greater Web exposure, enterprises were increasingly wary of the threats and risks posed by the cyberspace. Moreover, the rising prevalence of application-layer cyber attacks also forced enterprises to look at enhancing the security posture of their Web deployments, particularly with SQL injections and XSS (cross site script) emerging as main techniques for attack. With many of these attacks looking to infiltrate security systems and steal valuable customer data, enterprises were also keenly aware of the consequences pertaining to reputational and financial losses. The market is expected to witness a robust CAGR of 37.8 percent in the Southeast Asia region between 2012 and 2018.

Key Benchmarking Criteria for the Company of the Year Award For the Company of the Year Award, the following criteria were used to benchmark Imperva’s performance against key competitors:

• Growth Strategy and Implementation • Degree of Innovation into Business Processes • Leadership in Customer Value and Market Penetration

Decision Support Matrix and Measurement Criteria To support its evaluation of best practices across multiple business performance categories, Frost & Sullivan employs a customized Decision Support Matrix (DSM). The DSM is an analytical tool that compares companies’ performance relative to each other with an integration of quantitative and qualitative metrics. The DSM features criteria unique to each Award category and ranks importance by assigning weights to each criterion. The relative weighting reflects current market conditions and illustrates the associated importance of each criterion according to Frost & Sullivan. Fundamentally, each DSM is distinct for each market and Award category. The DSM allows our research and consulting teams to objectively analyze each company's performance on each criterion relative to its top competitors and assign performance ratings on that basis. The DSM follows a 10-point scale that allows for nuances in performance evaluation; ratings guidelines are shown in Chart 1. Chart 1: Performance-Based Ratings for Decision Support Matrix

This exercise encompasses all criteria, leading to a weighted average ranking of each company. Researchers can then easily identify the company with the highest ranking. As a final step, the research team confirms the veracity of the model by ensuring that small changes to the ratings for a specific criterion do not lead to a significant change in the overall relative rankings of the companies. Best Practice Award Analysis for Imperva The Decision Support Matrix, shown in Chart 3, illustrates the relative importance of each criterion for the Asia Pacific Best Practices Award and the ratings for each company under evaluation. To remain unbiased while also protecting the interests of the other organizations reviewed, we have chosen to refer to the other key player as Competitor 1 and Competitor 2. Criterion 1: Growth Strategy and Implementation Imperva is seen as one of the pioneering vendors in the WAF segment, especially among Southeast Asian enterprises. The strength of its WAF product, SecureSphere lies in its accuracy and comprehensive data protection. Furthermore, their reporting is highly appealing to the enterprises due to its granularity, which gives enterprises greater insights into their security posture. On top of that, their WAF solution is also able to meet stringent datacenter requirements for security, monitoring, performance, deployment, operations, and regulatory compliance. Furthermore, the vendor’s decision to offer cloud-based WAF services has enabled them to extend their market reach and cater to the increasing demand coming from the SMB segment. Most of all, Imperva’s Dynamic Profiling technology automatically learns behavior pattern and adapts to application changes over time, thus providing enterprises with up-to-date defense intelligence against attacks without manual configuration. This capability is highly

sought after given the rapid changes experienced by enterprises in their immediate environment and the larger context of the IT world. Criterion 2: Degree of Innovation into Business Processes At Imperva, they understand the need of aligning business processes together with technology. The vendor understands that the technology is not only seen as a tool but an enabler for businesses. As such, Imperva is seen to be leveraging on PCI-DSS regulation to drive forth WAF adoption among Southeast Asian enterprises. Such an approach also saw the vendor strengthening its reputation in security conscious verticals such as the BFSI and government sectors. In addition, the introduction of Cloud DDoS Protection enhanced the value proposition Imperva is able to offer customers on top of its market-leading SecureSphere Web Application Firewall. With global cyber attacks becoming more prevalent, coupled with evolving hacking methods such as DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) and Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs), this has heightened the need for enterprises to have these complementary capabilities in their setup. In many ways, Imperva managed to expand their customer base by continuing to innovate their WAF solution, despite the vendor already having a best-in-class reputation and a strong mindshare among enterprises. Criterion 3: Leadership in Customer Value and Market Penetration Imperva continued to experience substantial growth, particularly in countries like Malaysia and Philippines in 2011. Their well-established network of channel partners was key in extending its market reach across the region. The vendor’s commitment to delivering greater value to their customers also caused them to constantly look for technology and local partners. For instance, Imperva struck up more alliances with numerous industry-leading vendors in several categories, including Vulnerability Assessment, Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), Application Delivery and Identity Management to name a few. The synergies experienced with these partners enable Imperva to offer complete solutions that address organizations’ top data security challenges, and further strengthen its mindshare among enterprises. .

Conclusion Imperva is expected to grow more rapidly in the Southeast Asia region due to their increasing mindshare and installed base among the enterprises. Moreover, the introduction of their cloud-based WAF services will enable them to expand their presence in the SMB segment. With increased attacks happening in the enterprise space, this has led SMBs to be more security conscious and will certainly encourage them to adopt services from third party vendors to provide them with the protection they need. By relying on the strength of its WAF solution, which offers a wide array of capabilities, as well as constantly innovating on the technology front, such an approach will help Imperva to propel themselves higher into the enterprise mindshare and extend their lead over the rest of the competition in the Southeast Asian market.
