HEAD COACH

12 DAVIDSON WILDCATS

Caroline Price enters her 30th season in2011-12 as the head women's tennis coach. She began her exemplary tenure at

Davidson in 1983 and has since guided the Wildcats to onenational championship and 22 winning seasons, including sevenstraight years, before Davidson went 12-12 in 2008-09.

The women's tennis program is one of two female programsat Davidson to make a national tournament appearance, andamong active Davidson coaches, Price has the highest overallwinning percentage (.602) of any women's team.

Entering the 2011-2012 women's tennis season, Price has anoverall record of 401-265 and is 109-65 in Southern Conferenceduals.

Last year saw Price break in five freshmen as Davidson wentjust 5-20 overall and 1-9 in league play. It was the first time theWildcats finished under .500 since the 2001 team went 8-13. The2011 season was still a milestone year as the veteran coachreached the 400-win plateau for her career, getting it on Feb. 18in a 7-0 win at home vs. USC-Upstate.

The 2010 campaign saw Davidson finish in the top-four of theSoCon standings with a 7-3 mark, while Price guided the 'Cats toa 15-8 overall record. The 'Cats advanced to the SoConTournament, as only the top-four teams made it, before seeingtheir season come to an end with a defeat to eventual championCollege of Charleston. The 15 wins made it the sixth time in thelast seven years the Wildcats have tallied at least that many winsin a year and marked the ninth straight season they have had awinning record in league matches.

After opening the season 4-7, Price guided the Wildcats to an8-5 mark down the stretch, including a 4-1 win in the 'CatsSoCon Tournament opener against Georgia Southern, to finishthe 2009 campaign at 12-12 and 6-4 in league play. The winningmark in SoCon matches was the eighth straight season theWildcats have sported a winning record against their SoCon-foes. Davidson also again had a winning record at home, sport-ing an 8-4 mark.

For the third time in the past four years, Price led theWildcats to the finals of the SoCon Tennis Championships asDavidson concluded with a 19-6 overall mark (7-2 in SoCon) in2008. The 19 wins marked the fifth straight season the Wildcatshad taken home at least 15 wins or more in a single season. Ofthe 19 wins, 10 of them came on the Wildcats' home court asthey won their first 10 straight home matches, before falling toclose out the regular season.

The 2007 campaign saw Price guide the Wildcats to an 18-7overall mark and appearance in the 2007 SoCon Women’s TennisChampionship Semifinals before falling to College of Charleston.

Price garnered her third and most recent SoCon Coach of theYear honors during 2001-02 season when her team posted 18 vic-tories. The 2002-03 team followed with a 13-6 season and anappearance in the Southern Conference championship match forthe first time since the format of the tournament changed in1998. And last year, although their hopes for a championshipwere dashed by College of Charleston in the semifinals of theSoCon Tournament, the Wildcats posted eight regular-seasonconference wins, the most ever in school history.

In Price's second year at Davidson, she led the team to the1984 NCAA Division III National Championship, the only

national championship ever earned by a Davidson athletic team.In 1985, the Wildcats returned to the NCAA Tournament but lostin the finals to the University of San Diego. That year, the 'Catsset a new school record for wins in a season with 21.

Coach Price was faced with a new challenge in 1987 asDavidson began competing at the Division I level without theadvantage of scholarships. Despite the lack of funds and themarked increase in competition, Price's teams still managed togarner more wins than losses. It was not until the 1990-91 sea-son, the first time Davidson College offered scholarships towomen, that Price was able to offer scholarships to her players.

In 1993, Davidson started competing as a member of theSoCon after a successful two-year stint (including one leaguechampionship) as a member of the Big South Conference.Moving up yet another level in competition, the Wildcatsresponded to the newest challenge by finishing the season 12-5for a second-place finish in the league.

Since their introduction to the SoCon more than a decade ago,Price's teams have found great success. Thanks to the 'Cats'impressive 6-1 record in conference play in 1994, Price earnedSouthern Conference Coach-of-the-Year honors. She was recog-nized again in 1996 after leading the Wildcat squad to a 5-2league record.

A 1972 graduate of Furman, Price earned a bachelor of artsdegree in physical education. Before her arrival at Davidson, sheserved as East Carolina's Director of Men's and Women's Tennis.

On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22 footballplayers traveled to Atlanta to represent Davidson Collegeagainst Auburn, one of the most formidable teams in theSouth. The Plainsmen had massacred their first fouropponents, outscoring teams, 141-6.

According to one account, they were “big, quick, andundefeated” and heavily favored in the day’s matchup.Davidson was 2-4 and started a line averaging 20 poundsless.

Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated the game, out-gaining the “Red and Black” 240 yards to Davidson’s 91yards. Astoundingly, Davidson pulled together an offen-sive attack through the efforts of running back A.R.“Buck” Flowers and quarterback Henry Spann, deliveringa “bewildering array of forward passes.”

Davidson defeated one of the most powerful teams in

the South that day, 21-7, with scrappiness that cap-tured the awe and respect of Atlanta sportswriters. They wrote of the “Wildcats” from Davidson College, whose small stature and ferocious style proved over-whelming. One account notes that Morgan Blake ofthe Atlanta Journal remarked of the Davidson team,“No other team ever put together in these UnitedStates of the same weight as Coach Fetzer’s teamcould ever get the verdict over the flock of wild menfrom North Carolina.”

The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and ithas been used ever since, replacing former, milder ref-erences such as “Red and Black,” “Presbyterians” and“Preachers.”
