IntroductionThe past year has seen a number of changes inthe independent sector, both in terms of acuteprovision and mental health regulation.Nevertheless, and despite the challengingeconomic climate, many thousands of patientshave used the services and treatmentsprovided by independent hospitals in Scotland.
Yet the understanding of the sector’s scale andcontribution remains somewhat variable acrossour communities. We employ more than 1,100people and treat tens of thousands of patientsevery year, either as inpatients or on anoutpatient basis. Furthermore, we are workingmore and more closely in an advisory andcollaborative way with both the ScottishHealth Government and Local Health Boards. Our collective activity therefore does make areal and meaningful contribution to bothhealthcare provision and the economy inScotland.
The Scottish Independent Hospital Association(SIHA) was formed several years ago and aimsto provide a single co-ordinated voice tofacilitate consultation and share practiceacross the sector, helping to streamlinecommunication and avoid repetition andengagement with a multiplicity of individualorganisations.
We have compiled this Report to provide somekey facts and figures about the independenthealthcare sector in Scotland. A detailedsummary is available of the result of the audit.
I hope you find this report helpful and pleasedo contact me if you would like moreinformation about the SIHA, its members, orthe work of the independent health sector inScotland.

The mental health units:

• Of these, more than 32,100 were NHS patient bed days.
All SIHA members have a commitment toquality assurance as a key part of thedelivery of safe and effective services topatients, and they have systems in place toidentify the central cause of any issuesraised which help to ensure that problemsdo not recur.
In addition, the sector makes a sizeablecontribution to both Scottish employmentand the Scottish economy by providinghigh quality jobs for a large number ofpeople, while the majority of the goods andservices are bought locally.
These include areas such as foodstuffs, supplies, engineering support, groundsmaintenance, and building andconstruction.
