Kidding aside… the Chamber Board of Directors and Staff have developed a great plan of work for the coming year – look for the Helena Area Chamber of Commerce to continue as the leading business organization for area businesses.

As a business owner myself, I rely on the Chamber for its many programs and services that are available to all business members and their employees. The chamber has seen great stability in member support, even through a less than stellar economy. This is testimony to the strength of our chamber and the work that the chamber does. With over 830 members, the Chamber provides strong advocacy at the local and state levels.

There is a saying “The Chamber –doing things people think just happen” and I think that is very true! Many do not know that the Chamber responds to and sends information to over 30,000 inquiries each year from potential visitors and potential residents. The chamber also works hard to communicate with our members with current business news, member events, and more. The Chamber does many networking, educational and member events to add value to membership.

Planned for 2012 is a Chamber trip (destination to be announced!) and we also have several new member benefits coming up, plus the Chamber Board will stay focused on securing land this year for a new visitor information center.

A big project in the Helena community that will affect business is the Custer Interchange, which will start again in February and conclude this coming fall. The Chamber will work closely with the Montana Dept. of Transportation, the contractor and businesses along that corridor during the project to keep all businesses informed and to drive business to those who will be challenged during the closure of the bridge. We are encouraged with the end in sight for a much needed and long-awaited infrastructure improvement to a major business district in Helena.

I would encourage any business that is not currently a member to give Mike Sell, Membership Director at the Chamber, a call to find out all that the Chamber can do for your business. The Chamber is working hard to keep relevant and provide great benefits. I definitely see the value of the Chamber for my business.

I look forward to my role of Chairman for the coming year. I know the Chamber Board and Staff will work hard for you and your business.

Helena Chamber of Commerce l 2012 Report To The Community l 7

As the Chamber looks forward for our 2012 calendar year (122nd year as a chamber – Montana’s oldest), we are encouraged by progress over the past few months in our community to overcome challenges of a slower economy. Despite some of our industries facing a less than stellar year, Helena emerged as #2 in the nation out of 577 micropolitan cities (under 50,000 people) for economic strength. That says a lot about our community and what makes this a great place to live!

We are buoyed by the fact that the chamber membership has remained strong with nearly 840 members – now the third largest chamber in Montana (only behind Billings and Bozeman). With strong support from our members, we can continue to provide strong lobbying efforts such as our work this past year at the state legislative session that saw our chamber lobby on more than 100 bills in support of a better business climate. Most notable was efforts on the workers compensation costs that were lowered by an average of 20% and the work on lowering the business equipment tax.

New this past year and very popular with our members are the reports sent within a couple of days of each city commission meeting that keeps our members on the cusp of what is going on in the city that may impact their business.

One of our programs that saw the biggest growth was the Young Professionals. Not only did they grow in numbers of members, but they were very successful in obtaining good sponsorship dollars that enable them to provide great programs, discounts, and networking opportunities for the younger business people in our community.

Every year in my tenure at the Helena Area Chamber of Commerce (presently at 12.5 years here!) we have added more benefits for our members. We already have 3 new programs planned for 2012 that will again increase value for investment in the chamber.

We encourage our members (and remember – every employee of every member business IS a member!) to get involved, attend, participate, and volunteer for one of our many active committees or great events. With your help, we can make a real difference for the business community, for your business, and for Helena.

We have a staff of 7 highly qualified, loyal, hard-working people who concentrate on business success every day – I encourage you to get to know them! The Helena Chamber is your business advocate and the voice of business for the Helena Area.

8 l 2012 Report To The Community l Helena Chamber of Commerce

The biggest Chamber highlight of 2011 for me was the Helena Area Chamber of Commerce continued to be a stable force in Helena for its members. The Chamber staff and the board of directors continued to Serve, Promote and Protect our members. The Chamber staff, under the direction of Cathy Burwell, managed

to provide the exceptional service we are all accustomed to and keep the Chamber profitable during a very trying economic time.

It was a busy year with the 62nd Montana Legislative Session. The Chamber did a great job of monitoring legislation and weighing in to promote or oppose legislation when appropriate for business. There were also many

networking opportunities with legislators provided by the Chamber.

Because the Chamber has been doing an outstanding job for so long in providing business networking events we sometimes take them for granted. I would like to thank the Chamber Staff for their continued great job in this area. Leadership Helena continues to be a great success and the Young Professionals continue to grow. The Chamber sponsored Bill Rancic event was also a great success.

Thank you for your continued commitment and support, the Chamber is only as strong as we, the members make it. Incoming Chairman, Trevor MacDonald, of Sandy Mac’s Distributing, will do a great job guiding the Chamber during 2012. I have enjoyed serving as your 2011 Chamber Board Chair; it has been a great honor. Thank You!

Peter Sullivan was born and raised on a ranch in the Townsend area. After graduating from Carroll College in 1957, he started his career as a “repo man” for First National Bank here in Helena. He later “moved up” to a loan officer position.

An entrepreneur, in 1963 he struck out on his own selling insurance, pensions, and investments. Forty-nine years later, he is still running Sullivan Financial Group – a comprehensive financial planning firm in downtown Helena.

He and his wife Sheila raised six children – all successful in different careers – who have given him nine grandchildren.

Success in business has given him many honors over the years. He has been a member of the Million Dollar Roundtable for 35 years and was inducted in 2000 into the ING Financial Partners Hall of Fame for being in the top 10 of production for over 10 years.

Peter continues to be very supportive and involved in the Helena Chamber. He served as Chamber Board Chairman in 1979, has served as President of the Chamber Ambassadors (Red Coats) and served on an extensive list of foundation boards, community organizations, the Helena Navy League, Kiawanis, and the Helena Parking Commission /Business Improvement District.

He was appointed by 3 different governors to serve on the Governor’s Task Force on Philanthropy. He also received recognition as a Four Georgians Legacy Award Winner.

When there is a strong need or a very good cause that needs fundraising, Peter has been the “go-to” guy. As Chair of the recent Cathedral of St. Helena Capitol Campaign, he led this committee and was instrumental in raising $4.2 million of which many have said, Peter raised $3.8 million of that total. The campaign was expected to take place over several years, Peter’s leadership took the committee to completion in just 6 months. He was amazed at the level of contributions from Catholics and non-Catholics for this landmark and gem in Helena.

He has helped the Ambassadors raise money for the Friendship Center, the Old Glory Flag project, and many other efforts by the group. Peter was the Pacesetter for United Way for many years in getting commitments for larger employers to allow their employees to contribute to the local campaign. He and Sheila have been honored by many organizations in Helena – the list is too long to include here but very impressive!

2011 business of tHe YeArHelena Sand & Gravel

Helena Sand & Gravel has provided asphalt and concrete services to the Helena area since 1935. In 1976, Maronick Construction purchased Helena Sand & Gravel. The combined companies made for a strong, well-diversified company providing construction services and aggregate materials to the greater Helena valley. In 2000, Helena Sand & Gravel purchased Big Sky Ready Mix and in 2002 the company was purchased by Oldcastle Materials Group. The company is still managed from Helena with many of the traditions and practices established over the years.

Helena Sand & Gravel has expanded keeping pace with the recent growth in Helena. They aggressively seek all types of aggregate material supply and heavy construction work. Along with supplying concrete and asphalt, they also provide all types of sands and gravels, road mixes, washed sand & rock, crushed asphalt and topsoil. Their landscape center, located on Canyon Ferry Road, offers a variety of landscape rock including river rock, scoria rock, lava rock, Missoula red rock and crushed glass. Their construction crews perform all types of site work including underground utilities, all types of excavation work, grading, gravel work and asphalt paving.

They have recently performed contract work for Montana Dept. of Transportation, Montana Aeronautics, City of Helena, Helena Regional Airport, Montana Dept. of Environmental Quality and various private development companies.Helena Sand & Gravel takes pride in their reputation built on a safe work environment for our employees, quality workmanship and customer service. They strive to develop long standing relationships with our clients and with the Helena community.

In support of local schools and the military, the company spent their own money to paint their 4 mixer trucks with logos of Carroll College, Helena High School, Capital

High School, and the Montana Army National Guard. They are big supporters of Lewis and Clark County 4-H and the Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds.

In 2011, during the extensive flooding that plagued the county, they donated over $20,000.00 in sand to aid area residents with their staff and equipment delivering round the clock deliveries and help wherever they could. They also allowed flood waters into their gravel pit along Lake Helena Drive which essentially made the pit unusable for the 2011 season. They are very community-minded and support an extensive list of organizations in Helena, in the region and state-wide.

Please join us in congratulating Helena Sand and Gravel in being awarded the Helena Chamber’s 2011 Business of the Year!

2011 sMAll business of tHe YeArCapital Sports & Western Wear

Capital Sports and Western Wear was established in 1970 by Arthur C. Keeler. The store was then purchased in 1994 by Edward Beall and Art Keeler Junior and flourished under Ed and Art Jr.'s ownership until 2008 when Art Jr. retired from Capital Sports. Ed then took on 3 new partners- Dave Tobel, Bart Bratlien and Jay Sherley, all long term employees of Capital Sports, in 2008.

Capital Sports is a full service retail sporting goods store featuring a complete gun repair shop as well as a ski and bike service shop. Some of the store’s key departments include outdoor footwear and clothing, fishing, skis, bikes, hunting products and, of course, guns.

The employees of Capital Sports are definitely what keeps the store functioning as well as it does. Capital Sports employs an average of 32 people many of whom have been with the store 20 years or more. Their business model is based on offering a superior level of customer service and this would not be possible without their dedicated staff.

Supporting the Helena community is a big part of their success at Capital Sports. They average over $30,000 per year in donations to local Helena organizations. Some of the many organizations they support include Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Last Chance Stampede, Small Fry Football, Babe Ruth Baseball, Walleyes Unlimited, Helena Exchange Club-Coats for Kids, Carroll College and many more. They are also active in many of these same organizations, donating time in support of the community. They have a strong base of regular customers that they interact with at these events throughout the year and they always remember Capital Sports when they are ready to purchase sporting goods.

Even in this era of on-line shopping and price checking on smart phones, they are confident that there will always be place for a local retail store selling quality products at reasonable prices and offering impeccable customer service.

Leadership Helena continues to have a great enrollment success. Thirty-one candidates graduated in 2011. This program has become well respected in the community. We are finding this is a great source of future volunteers for our committees, leaders for other organizations’ boards and even to serve on the Chamber Board. Mike Mergenthaler & Chairman Dean Mack do an excellent job leading this.

Convention and Visitor Bureau: This Council is doing an outstanding job of planning and utilizing the bedtax dollars that the Chamber/CVB receives. Notable this past year:

• Targetede-mailcampaigntoapprovedaddressesthat have indicated they want to receive vacation information.

• Continuetosendane-newslettersenttohundredsof potential visitors who want to receive area information – this is sent out every other month and currently has nearly 700 regular recipients.

• PurchasemonthlyoftheSmithTravelReportthattracks occupancy of local hotels and thus measures level of visitors that come to Helena and stay overnight. A valuable tool for measuring the tourism sector of our economy.

• AirportDisplayhasbecomeourlargestoutletformaps, vacation guides, and brochures.

• HelpedwithvolunteerdeficiencyincoverageofVICby hiring person to fill in end of season.

• Websiteupdatestokeepoursitecurrentandhelpfulto potential visitors.

• WarmSeasonmagazineadvertisingplankeepHelenaas a destination and also capitalizes on our location between parks.

• Sentoutnearly2500relocationandover20,000vacation packets in 2011

SWISH Basketball Tourney – SWISH had another good year as a tournament. It was great to see more teams enter than before and this year’s event went off without a hitch! - Big impact to the local economy of about ½ - ¾ of a million dollar impact.

Government Affairs Committee – This committee worked hard to prepare for the 2011 Session. Government Affairs Chair Howard Skjervem, Board Chair Jim Stanger, our lobbyist Ronda Wiggers, and Chamber CEO Cathy Burwell worked to keep things flowing and within the policies set forth by the committee and members. We hosted legislators for breakfast, gave them all a welcome packet and gift, and hosted their spouses on a tour/lunch out and about Helena. We also co-hosted the Friday meetings at the Capitol with Hometown Helena all through the session – this year providing lunch to encourage legislators to attend.

In June and November, we had workshops for members customer service with Steve Beck. As usual, we also had our Assistance for Business and Familiarization Tour trainings. Over 300 members took advantage of these affordable training opportunities.

Chamber Spotlight TV Program/Spot – This program with KTVH Channel 12 and CW-10 continues to be a great promotional tool for the Chamber and for our members. Each year we will have interviewed nearly 50 of our Chamber members. Great exposure for the Chamber and a good benefit to the members featured. The value to members interviewed is around $700.00 for the week of their spotlight.

Member Lunch on Evolution of Print Media and Marketing – Featured Randy Rickman (Publisher of the IR) and Toni Broadbent (owner of Allegra Print Imaging and Web Design) who presented to our membership.

Member Lunch on “Big Business in Small Town” – ”. Boeing Helena, Northrup Grumman, and Heritage Propane (all Fortune 500 Companies located here) presented excellent information about their companies.

Young Professionals – This group continued to see progress – with nearly 200 members, (great amount of growth from the first year) The steering group planned at least 1 event per month and is moving toward more learning and professional growth opportunities in addition to their networking and social events. They were very successful in securing sponsorships to offset program costs. Another program they are now working on is a mentoring program. This is a very vibrant group within the Chamber!

Seeking to try something new for our members, we held a Celebrity Speaker Event in October. The Bill Rancic event had over 300 members attend and was a high quality event that had a different demographic than other events – mostly under 40 aged members attended.

2012 Marks Fourth Year For

Young Professionals GroupThe Helena Chamber’s Young Professionals group begins their fourth year stronger and more involved than ever before! The YP’s were created in 2009 with the goals of getting young working members of the Helena community involved with the Chamber, and to offer young professionals a means of networking amongst their peers. The group meets every month, and the meetings include everything from networking luncheons, to lounge series speakers, to after work socials. The YP’s have had the chance to hear from many nationally renowned speakers, and has grown in size to over nearly 200 members! In addition to networking and learning, the Young Professionals have contributed to many local charitable organizations, including Helena Food Share, Toys for Tots, and Coats for Kids. Last year, the YP’s learned the ins and outs of opening and operating your own business, participated in a Toastmaster’s meeting, listened to a lively debate from young, local congressmen during the legislative session, and toured the Helena Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank to learn of the Bank’s impact on the Helena community. In addition, they also served as the Bucket Brigade to raise money for the Symphony Under

The Stars, collected toys for the Marine Corps “Toys For Tots” program, and donated goods and time to Helena Food Share!

If you are between the ages of 25 and 45, the Helena Chamber invites you to participate in the Young Professionals group! Young Professionals is a great networking, socializing, and professional development opportunity targeted to this age group. They have an Executive Steering Committee that creates a program agenda for a monthly function that is specifically designed to involve young members in the Chamber in a different venue then currently offered to all members. The Steering Committee also elects one member each year to serve a one-year term on the Chamber’s Board of Directors. This also helps businesses recruiting younger employees to Helena, to get them connected with others their age very quickly. If your business is looking for a great way to develop your young talent, please call either Barry Houser or Mike Sell at the Chamber at 442-4120.

The Helena Chamber is proud to announce our 2012 Artist of the Year, Paul Graham! Paul was born in Helena in 1967. He was raised in the Helena area and currently lives with his wife Beckie and daughter Chase in the mountains near Helena.

As a fourth-generation Montanan, Graham naturally acquired a passion for the outdoors. An artist since childhood, he is continually influenced by the freedom and beauty of the mountains and wildlife around him. Whether it’s a fishing trip on the Missouri, a white-water rafting trip, or working with his wife on their small mountain ranch, each day brings new ideas for another unique creation.

Graham has worked in several mediums including oils, clay, photography, and stained glass. In 1997, he completed a one-year internship in stained glass and

worked as a teaching assistant at Carroll College, a Catholic liberal arts college in Helena. In early 1998, Graham discovered his own process of combining sculpted molten metal and bent stained glass in a single piece. Graham experimented with abstract designs, and eventually began to sculpt images. In November 1998, his dream of becoming a full time artist became a reality when he resigned from his position as Financial Director of the Airport Authority.

Graham has expanded glass and metal designs to include plates, antler pieces, free standing sculpture, and chandeliers. He has also developed a complete line of fused glass pieces. Although his process is just a few years old, Graham’s work has been accepted in galleries and shows across the United States. He has displayed at several national shows across the northwest. Graham is also a supporter of many local organizations

Graham feels extremely blessed that God gave him the ability to create. He plans on using his talent as he works toward his life-long goal, to be happy and decorate the lives of others.

Leadership helena Kicks begins30th Year With 2011-2012 Class

The Leadership Helena Class of 2011–2012 began in September with an overnight retreat at the Blacktail Ranch! This year’s class is excited to begin the 9 month session that focuses on becoming an informed, effective leader and qualities and traits that make a good leader. The class will also explore a variety of topics that affect the Helena community such as Government and Law, Education, Health, Community Services and Growth and Planning.

While at the Blacktail Ranch, the group had the opportunity to get to know each other and the diversified backgrounds that they each come from. They also learned about their own individual leadership characteristics and the pros and cons that pertain to them. The class will continue to meet the second Thursday of each month and conclude in May with a graduation ceremony and reflection of the training and events of the past year.

The Helena Area Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all of the businesses who support Leadership Helena by allowing their employees the opportunity to participate in this great program.

Tiered Membershipenhances Chamber Benefits

Over the past several years, the Helena Area Chamber of Commerce has implemented and improved a dues structure known as Tiered Membership. Prior to our Tiered Dues Structure, a Member’s dues investment was based on the number of employees rather than their need for products and services. Under the Tiered Membership program, a business or organization can choose from several different levels offering a wide array of benefits. It’s as simple as picking the level that’s right for you! The Chamber currently boasts a total membership of 850 members. Membership in the tiered program has more than doubled since its inception in 2006, with over 20% of Helena Chamber businesses now participating in this new structure!

Tiered Membership offers eight different levels to choose from with each increase in level providing more benefits and offering a better value than purchasing the same products and services separately. Members can choose to participate in the level that best meets their business needs. In addition to the savings, all Tiered Members receive:

Working for a Strong Business Climate in HelenaGovernment Affairs

The Helena Area Chamber of Commerce represents businesses from the greater Helena area. We act as the voice for business and are committed to ensuring a favorable economic, legal, and regulatory climate for the Helena Area business community. Each policy position we have taken has been carefully reviewed by our board. Our mission is to publicly support policies that will facilitate economic growth in our community. We hope that you will take the time to become engaged in these issues and, in turn, communicate with your elected representatives.

At all levels of government, well-intentioned initiatives often have unintended consequences. Without input from the business community, these initiatives could adversely impact the ability of businesses to generate jobs and to create higher standards of living. However, when business leaders communicate with their elected officials, better public policies result.

The Helena Area Chamber of Commerce is an advocate for business and believes in free enterprise. We are pro-business. The Government Affairs Committee

(GAC) is the advocacy arm of the Helena Area Chamber of Commerce. The role of the committee is to evaluate public policy from the City, County, State, and Federal levels. The Committee assists and promotes business participation in government and legislative affairs as well as promotes the interests of the Helena area business community in the political process. The Chamber currently has the support of a professional lobbyist to assist our Committee with these efforts. The Government Affairs Committee meets periodically to discuss and update legislative positions and appropriate positions on local issues. We may invite our elected officials and representatives to join us and give us updates from their jurisdictions. All Chamber members are welcome to attend

meetings. Committees will be appointed by the Chamber Board Chair and the Vice Chair of the Chamber’s Government Affairs Council.

During the 2011 Legislature, the Chamber worked on over 100 bills and was instrumental in the successful passing of many of those. The Chamber’s GAC worked diligently to stay on top of bills sent to us for input and decisions. We would love to hear your input on legislative issues that may and will affect your business. Please call the Helena Chamber at 442-4120!

In addition, the Helena Chamber also participates in the Coalition of Montana Chambers. This group is comprised of the Chambers from our state’s major population centers, including Billings, Bozeman, Butte, Great Falls, Kalispell, and Missoula. The Coalition meets annually to focus attention on state-wide issues, and to share notes on what each is doing successfully. The Helena Chamber is an advocate for business to represent a strong voice – the voice of nearly 850 businesses in the Capitol City!

the helena Area Chamber of CommerceRecommends... YOUR Business!

On any given day, the Chamber office receives dozens of phone calls and the lobby is filled with walk-in traffic. These customers might be visitors to our community/state/country, or even local people and they are looking for recommendations on variety of things including dining, lodging, shopping, recreation, etc. for the Helena area. Did you know as part of your membership in the Chamber that the Helena Area Chamber of Commerce recommends your business?

As a result of these inquiries, the Chamber started “The Chamber Recommends” brochures. These brochures are industry specific and list all Chamber members within that category. A member’s business, address and telephone number are automatically included for free!

The “Chamber Recommends” brochures have proven so popular that we have had to add additional categories and are now up to 23 different brochures. In addition to the categories listed above other brochures include: Real Estate, Autos, Boats, RV’s, Insurance, Banks & Financial Services, Home Improvement, Computer Services, Construction, etc.

Brochures are available in the Chamber lobby, Visitor Center locations located at the Helena Regional Airport and the Walmart parking lot, and on-line on the Chamber website at www.helenachamber.com/newslettersandbrochures. Your listing in a “Chamber Recommends” brochure is in addition to your alphabetical and category listing in the Membership Directory. As members join, their business is added to the brochure. This is an invaluable membership benefit that directs customers to only Chamber members!

The “Chamber Recommends” brochure program is an incentive for you to visit the Chamber website at www.helenachamber.com to see the categories that business is listed in. Call Mike Sell at 447-1945 today if you would like to join the Chamber and have your business included in these brochures.
