2012 ANNUAL REPORT

These numbers provide a snapshot of the Foundation’s “vital signs” – those measurements that give an indication of health and well being. They’ve changed quite a lot in the last 10 years . . . from a total asset figure of around $325,000 in 2002 to well over $6 million in 2012. The lifeblood that has nourished and sustained that growth is a mirror image of our

community – reflecting the faces of our friends and family of donors. We celebrated and honored all our donors in July with a special event held at the Almont Resort – our wonderful hosts, along with

Three Rivers Resort. Food, fun and fine music by 18-Mile Radius added the final sparkle to an unmatched summer evening in the

Gunnison Country. We know that our Valley is a better place because of these generous folks – our donors - who make their home here.

It was also a time to honor two exceptional, long-time friends of the Foundation with “The Quiet Philanthropist” Award. John and Sandra Cosentino have formed a habit of giving, which has sped the Foundation on its path to living its mission in the Valley. As Charter Members of the early Gunnison Area Foundation, they’ve provided the now merged Community Foundation with its home since 2004. Not only gifts to the Foundation; gifts through the Foundation as well. To the parks, to the schools, the

hospital and so many more. Outside the Foundation, others can share similar stories. Rotary, St. Peters, the CB Land Trust, Gunnison Ranchland Conservation Legacy, the schools.

Asked why they give, Sandra replies, “Because we care. If you care about something, you want the best for it. Gunnison is our home, and we’re so proud of this community.” John adds . . . “the main thing is to be able to help if we see a need. It’s satisfying enough to know we did it – anonymity has always been fine with us.”

We honor the Cosentinos for their friendship and for their approach to “giving back.” We also thank them for coming clean and letting us tell others how one couple has made a big difference to the work of the Foundation.

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS

Types of Funds

DONORS ...From the early conceptual stage, CFGV has been

an avid fan of Six Points’ plans to raise funds for a new roof over their heads. Since 1975, Six Points has filled a wide gap in our community’s support of developmentally disabled adults by providing work training and opportunities, residential support, and a sense of community. Thirty-four successful and growth-filled years later, it was time to have a space that was truly theirs, and they acquired land north of the Community Center – a busy, open-for-business part of Gunnison.

They had reached the 36% mark of their $1.63 million goal when two Donor Advised Funds of

the CFGV collaborated to offer a challenge gift of $45,000, effectively doubling donations made to the fund up to that amount. Original donor funds, The Hemminghaus Family Fund and The William B. Endner Fund, were joined by other donor advised funds and donors to boost the challenge to over $54,000.

We’re excited to be part of this long-awaited venture, which will allow Six Points to serve more clients, expand training opportunities and better serve the entire community through their thrift store. We salute this exceptional organization for helping to build our community with compassion and energy.

We all leave a mark as we travel through life. Through philanthropic gifts, we’re able to extend our joy, passions and experiences to others, unlimited by time and space. Being “here for good,” the Foundation is in the perfect place to help our donors reach out and share their passions as well as their resources, now and with future generations. We’re also “here for you” – and we vow to remain true to your intent so your gift works the way you want it to.

Unrestricted FundYour gift to the Unrestricted Fund at CFGV

supports the Foundation’s work in the community, addressing a broad range of needs – including future needs that often cannot be anticipated at the time your gift is made. Notably, our Board, Advisors and Staff generously cover 100% of our internal operating expenses, so your gift to the Foundation goes fully to work, directly impacting our community in a myriad of ways. We track all aspects of community well-being, including arts and culture, athletics and recreation, community development, education, environment, health and human services and domestic animal welfare. Your unrestricted gift provides flexibility to the Community Foundation’s program experts to respond to the most pressing needs, today and tomorrow.

Donor Advised FundsDonor Advised Funds allow donors to actively

engage in the grant-making process in a longer-term way. You – and those you name – may recommend grants to the Board, becoming an integral arm in strengthening and lifting up the Valley in the ways that especially resonate with you.

Field of Interest Funds Donors who wish to impact a certain area of

endeavor may establish a Field of Interest Fund, enabling them to specify those areas they choose, such as the arts, the environment, human services. The CFGV Board identifies specific grantee organizations in the area chosen.

Designated FundsA Designated Fund provides perpetual support for

one or more selected organizations of the donor’s choice.

Agency Endowment FundsA nonprofit organization may secure its own

future with an Endowment Fund, which provides perpetual support for operations or other more specific projects or programs.

Scholarship FundsScholarship Funds are established to assist

students with education expenses. They are tailored to meet the intent of individual donors and are often established as memorials.

Fiscal Sponsorship / Pass-Through Funds

Fiscal Sponsorship Funds fulfill a particular community purpose. Commonly established as a short-term fund for charitable groups seeking IRS 501(c)(3) designation, they can also provide administrative support for a project or organization that will benefit our community.

No matter the type of fund a donor chooses to create, funds remain permanently in the donor’s name while the Community Foundation offers all the administrative support to honor the donor’s philanthropic intent. Anonymity is always an option.

Call Pam for more information about opening a fund. (970) 641-8837 or (970) 349-5966

Ways to giveCash

Cash is the easiest way to contribute to the Foundation and will qualify for the maximum allowable income tax deduction.

Stocks and BondsAppreciated stocks and bonds may be given to the Foundation. Donors deduct their current market value, allowing the donor to receive a full charitable deduction and avoid capital gains tax on the appreciation.

Real EstateReal Estate may be given to the Foundation at its current market value, allowing the donor to receive a full charitable deduction and avoid capital gains on the appreciation.

Life InsuranceLife insurance can be used to create a major gift to the Foundation in two different ways. First, the donor can transfer ownership of a policy to the Foundation and receive a current income tax deduction in the year the transfer is made. Second, the donor, while retaining ownership of the policy, can name the Foundation as beneficiary of the policy.

Retirement PlansDonors can use an IRA or other retirement assets to establish a new fund or make a direct donation to the Foundation.

BequestsBequests to the Foundation allow a donor’s charitable intentions to be carried out in perpetuity and can significantly reduce the estate taxes otherwise payable upon death. This insures that the donor provides a lasting legacy for the causes about which he or she cares the most.

Convert an Existing Private FoundationAdministering a private foundation under IRS rules can be burdensome and expensive. Transferring the assets into a donor advised fund at the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley provides a cost-effective alternative for administering these funds well into the future.

Call the Foundation office when you have questions! (970) 641-8837 or (970) 349-5966

A-Ford-able Giving

Through a novel approach to giving, CFGV Advisor Robert Pickering and his wife, Mary, brought some sparkle to the summer and some funding to Foundation operations. A classic car devotee, Robert offered his eye-catching 1928 Model A Ford Pickup to the Foundation for a silent auction, and the Little Red Truck became a regular at summer events throughout the Valley. While at the Car Show, it pulled on the heart strings of Carolyn McCutchin, whose husband Ronnie fondly recalls his experiences with his own 1928 Model A Pickup.

Carolyn surprised Ronnie for his birthday with the Little Red Truck, which has become a welcome member of their mechanized family. The proceeds from the truck in turn provided a welcome boost to the Foundation’s Cornerstone Fund, and we gratefully thank the Pickerings for their thoughtful, creative, and most generous gift and the McCutchins for their love of the Little Red Truck!.

GIVING REDEFINED

A TIMELY GIFT

CONNECTING TO

Gifts to the community

come in all sizes and shapes!

Have you noticed the clock at the Four Way Stop in Crested Butte? It hasn’t been there forever, though it looks like it’s right at home.

Jim Bertelsmeyer, an advisor to a fund at the F o u n d a t i o n , l oves “ r ea l ” projects. He was on a trip in the Midwest when a clock in a town park caught his eye. Immediately in his mind popped up the vision of a clock in CB – he could just see it!

The clock does tell us the time, and it also tells a story of love of “place.” Jim didn’t take long to call the Foundation to see if his vision could become a reality. After a bit of negotiating with the Town, in the fall of 2012 that clock just appeared at the corner – the perfect place for all to enjoy . . . a gift from the Bertelsmeyer, Snapp and Westbrock families.

Do YOU have a vision? Call the Foundation . . . we’re the place where dreams can come true. 970-641-8837 or 970-349-5966.

DONORS will find many varied opportunities to connect with

community needs through a fund at the Foundation. We handle all the

administrative chores, and are happy to advise you of what organizations

are doing and how you can help.

EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING

IMAGINATION LIBRARY

Can you imagine a better gift for our little ones than having the world delivered to their doorstep? A collaboration among generous Community Foundation donors, CFGV itself, and Dolly Parton’s Dollywood Foundation brings a new, free, age-appropriate book each month to Gunnison and Hinsdale County children age 1 – 5 who are enrolled in the program.

Parent and child develop strong emotional ties as they read together and encounter all manner of old and new adventures, knowledge and images conjured up in the mind. Reading to young children increases vocabulary, creativity, focus and language skills, which slip into the experience almost unnoticed. Reading also builds knowledge and information processing skills, stimulates the right side of the brain and is an excellent stress reducer.

Thanks to our many wonderful donors, 337 young readers received 4,079 books in 2012. A year’s worth of books for each child costs $30. If you’d like to mold young minds through the wonder of books, we’d love to welcome you as a sponsor! Just go to our website at cfgv.org and click on the donate button, or reach us by mail or phone: (970) 641-8837 or (970) 349-5966.

Can anyone even imagine nonprofits without volunteers?

Volunteers are the lifeblood of any nonprofit organization. Yet who can quantify their value to an organization and to our way of life without payroll entries to calculate? The Corporation for National and Community Service tackled the math for 2011 and reports that in Colorado, volunteers provided a value of $22.43 per hour given to the receiving nonprofit. Nationally, this calculates to a staggering $171 billion in volunteer service!

Notably, unemployed individuals who volunteer over the next year have 27 percent higher odds of being employed at the end of the year than non volunteers.

The Gunnison Valley is bustling with 113 active nonprofits, each with its treasure of volunteers whose passion impels them to share and give for the best of reasons. The vibrancy of our nonprofit community shines forth each year when the Community Foundation requests nominations for its Volunteer of the Year Award. The recommendations contain remarkable accounts of selfless giving and dedication.

The Foundat ion’s 2012 Volunteer of the Year award

honored a husband – wife team for their tireless support of the Valley they love to come home to. Beverly and Balie Griffith split their time between Austin, Texas, and Crested Butte, and make time to give to a long list of nonprofits in both home towns. Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, Union Congregational Church, the Trust for Public Lands and 1% for Open Space combined to nominate the Griffiths for

this award, appreciating their generous involvement in these and countless other organizations. The award provides a $1,000 donation from CFGV to the charitable fund of their choice, for which the Griffiths selected Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory as their beneficiary.

Other recent awardees include Jeff Walker (Partners) and Cliff Clawson (Habitat for Humanity and St. Peter’s Knights of Columbus).

Beverly and Balie Griffith

Honored by her peersWhat better way to shape the future than to teach?

And what better way to salute this vital profession than to honor an exceptional teacher each year? The prestigious Dan Tredway Memorial Excellence in Teaching Award does just that. The twelfth annual award given in 2012 went to Dr. Marta J. (Jody) Coleman, Gunnison High School English teacher, together with a $2,000 cash stipend.

Dr. Coleman has shown a consistent commitment to the Gunnison School District and to her students, in part through her pursuit of numerous academic degrees in both arts and academics. Many students point to her as preparing them for success in higher education, even as she continues to be a resource to many graduates beyond the halls of GHS.

One of Dr. Coleman’s students remarked, “Dr. Coleman is an amazing woman! I have learned so much and am obsessed with her class!” A former student added, “She is hugely dedicated to teaching, always available, puts in enormous hours and cares deeply about her students.”

The award memorializes the late Dr. Dan Tredway, longtime WSCU professor and pioneer in rural education. He lived the principles of inclusiveness, faithfulness, love of family and humanity. Criteria for the award include classroom creativity, dedication to students, commitment to the community and the ability to spark an excitement of learning.

Previous recipients include Mark High, Kaylonn Tredway, Ellie Ferguson, Leo Malloy, Alicia Belgiovane, John F.X. McCarthy, Mary Nordberg, Karen Alton, Ann Landwehr, Bob Howard and Emily Kowal.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING AWARDTen years’ worth of concern for

young driver safety equates to ten highly skilled Gunnison teen drivers – and safer roadways for us all. Since 2004, donors Lee and Polly Spann have provided a gift to our community that resonates “down the road.” After sending their grandchildren to the MasterDrive Program in Colorado Springs for defensive driving skills training, they wanted to widen the safety

circle to include other aspiring young drivers in our community.

MasterDrive was conceived by a former racecar driver after an accident caused by a drunk driver took his daughter’s life. The program he developed teaches defensive driving skills and proper reactions in sudden perilous driving situations.

The 2012 winning application was submitted by Taila Oulton, who attended the two-day skills course in June. Taila reported her favorite skill training was practicing skid recovery on a skid pad. Erica Viehman, who won the first award in 2004 and

who now lives in Alaska, credits her MasterDrive training with saving her from the cold waters of the bay after recovering from a 180° spin on an icy causeway. Her grateful parents, Dick and Cindy Viehman, have added their support to the program to widen the circle of opportunity even further.

Helping to save lives – it’s hard to think of a better return on investment than that! Our grateful thanks go to these wonderful donors. If you’d like to join them so more young drivers could benefit, we’d be delighted to welcome your support.

GUNNISON VALLEY

LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Along with the Gunnison Country Chamber of Commerce, the Foundation is proud to sponsor the Gunnison Valley Leadership Program (GVLP). The nine month experience offers individuals who have community leadership potential the opportunity to develop knowledge and sharpen leadership skills through a series of sessions focusing on issues affecting the Gunnison Valley. Goals for participants are to identify and develop a personal leadership style; to observe other paradigms of leadership and learn how to work best with those styles; and to find inspiration to serve the community in a personalized leadership capacity.

2012 graduates of the program include Katie Bainbridge (WSCU), Margo Patton Blair (Cattlemen’s Days), Andrew Butterfield (CBMR), Laura Cass DeFelice (CB Center for the Arts), Megan Dougherty (Gunnison County Juvenile Services), Annie Dyar, (CBMR), Carlie Kenton (Gunnison Arts Center), Heather Leonard (WSCU), John Mahoney (WSCU), Maya Silver (ORE), and Julena Swanson (Partners).

The sponsors have exciting plans for the future, including a restructuring of GVLP I and a new GVLP II. Be sure to stay tuned!

East River ValleyDuring 2012, CFGV continued to

facilitate thoughtful dialogue about issues that impact people and resources in the Gunnison Valley. In the spirit of creating a safe place to talk about difficult issues, particularly in this case how public lands should be used and managed, CFGV has served as the neutral convener for conversations among people and groups with vastly different views on this topic.

The project, referred to as R3G, began in the Fall of 2012 with a series of one-on-one interviews with more than 50 individuals. Ranching, Recreation, Research, Government, and environmental concerns were all represented. Followed by a series of small group conversations throughout 2013 and based upon insights gained during the interviews, multiple stakeholders connect and identify shared interests, explore critical concerns, pose questions of one another, and generate actionable next steps.

A convocation is anticipated in early 2014 that will invite a larger group of interested stakeholders to share the thinking and work of various smaller group meetings in 2012 and 2013. The convocation will foster a broader-based community to support effective use and management of public lands in the Upper East River Valley.

Help getting off the ground

Starting a nonprofit or even a short-term community project can be like hiking cross country without a topo map. Without direction and guidance, navigating IRS rules and regulations can be a tricky and confusing business. CFGV has been Fiscal Sponsor to 33 organizations throughout the years, getting them on their feet while they get off the ground. Many of these “graduate” nonprofits now perform vital roles in our community. We were happy to serve the following organizations as Fiscal Sponsor in 2012:

STEP PROGRAM

A STEP in the Right Direction

The Community Foundation’s Community Grants Program offers one of the most direct and practical helping hands to our nonprofits – cash money. By providing funding to an organization in exchange for its proposal describing and authenticating its need, CFGV donors fuel its activities that in turn invigorate and strengthen community life. An amiable chain reaction, one might say: CFGV through its donors serving the nonprofits, who serve the community.

There are things that money can’t readily buy in a rural location such as ours, though – or it would take a fair-sized pile of it. Things such as how to set up a good nonprofit bookkeeping system – or how to satisfy Uncle Sam’s requirements for a 501(c)(3) – or ways to build a more effective board, run a successful capital campaign or develop a workable strategic plan. Since those things are all a part of the Foundation's knowledege bank, it seemed a useful extension of our Grants Program, with a bit of a twist. With much excitement, we inaugurated our STEP Program for granting consulting services in July of 2012.

“STEP,” when expanded from its acronym, reveals its qualities: Sustainable, Tough, Efficient, Purposeful. Numerous CFGV staff, Board members, Advisors and Valley consultants have specialized expertise in those areas that can help launch nonprofits to higher levels. CFGV Advisor, Maryo Ewell, is our kind “STEP Mother,” serving as the bridge between the nonprofits and our wonderful panel of volunteer consultants.

Recipient organizations in 2012 include Six Points, Hospice, Trailhead Discovery Museum, Sustainable Development Strategies Group, Partners, Paradise Place Preschool, ORE, KBUT, Crested Butte Mountain Theatre and Mountain Roots Food Project. Consultants who have generously given of their time and expertise are Noelle Hagan, Paul Duba, Gail Digate, Janice Welborn, Brian Krill and Tina Brudzinski.

With help from our friends and donors, we’re building a stronger community, one STEP at a time.

CONNECTING OUR COMMUNITYDONORS ... CONNECTING

The Upper Gunnison River Valley that we call home is as ancient as the landmarks that define our space in this magnificent neighborhood of Colorado. The presence of “us” among these volcanic features and the traumatic events of millions of years past is recent and brief. We can glimpse some small perspective through the tracings of local historians, noting with surprise what life was like for the likes of us 100 or more years ago.

Our pioneering forebears gathered into communities through shared purpose and the almost instinctual understanding that things worked better when they shared the load, divvied up the chores, and brought their own unique approaches to the situation at hand.

We are now living our own story – soon enough to be

“history” – building upon the foundations created by those who first looked with amazement at the beauty around them as they built their lives among the mountain peaks and the broad valleys. We find connections are everywhere – often subtle and unnoticed, but always there if given a little thought and reflection, giving us a leg up and carrying us forward.

In the big picture, The Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley is among the new kids on the block, with roots going back to 1997 - the end of the last century. What brings us purpose and joy is finding, strengthening and maintaining those connections that are the life force of community. Where, though, do we find the energy and resources to fulfill this work?

The power of connection is our strength – and that strength returns to us through our community. Our donors join with us and we become community, connecting gifts with needs, helping each other reach our best selves. In 2012, the Community Foundation connected 21 fund advisors to needs and causes close to their hearts. Gifts to all CFGV funds totaled $952,037 –just imagine the power behind that number to our community!

We are immensely grateful for the trust our donors place in us. We’re “Here for Good,” as we keep our eyes open to the present while looking to the future, aware of how quickly it can arrive.

...THE FOUNDATION

The relationships CFGV fosters with our loyal donors, our committed nonprofits and our beloved community are the cornerstone of building for the future.

There is no question that the Gunnison Valley is filled with caring, giving, loving individuals and organizations – caring for one another in more ways than any one person can count.

We embrace our donors as the heart of CFGV. For it is their caring and their giving that energize the work we do with the Valley’s nonprofits. Some donors have funds that the foundation stewards; some donors focus on one area – and we are so thankful for those who love the Imagination Library, our scholarships and Defensive Driving Award! A little known fact is that the Foundation’s Board, Advisors and Staff – 100% of them – supported the internal operations of CFGV in 2012 and have committed to do the same for 2013. That is an amazing (and worthy of shouts from the mountaintops) fact. Their generosity allows the dollars contributed by the general public to go right to work in the community.

We support our nonprofits as organizations focused on the aspects of life in the Valley that make us special and unique. It is hard to even begin to think what would be missing in our “place” without the focused work of the nonprofit agencies. There are the organizations that are front and center with their cultural pursuits that feed the souls of those who listen to the music, breathe in the scent of the wildflowers and watch our little ones (and big ones) dance – our cultural festivals feed not only our souls, they help drive our economy. More subtle is the work of our environmental organizations – always protecting

our view corridors, our water and our natural habitat – keeping the pristine parts of our "place" safe. Even more below the radar are those agencies that work one at a time with those who suffer – physically or emotionally. We count on them to keep us healthy.

It is the combined support of our donors and our nonprofits that make our community strong.

Our third area of focus is the community as a whole – and our Board and Staff are involved in so many community aspects from the Gunnison Valley Leadership Program to holding public office, to serving our schools. When we come together to plan our work – it is the vision of a strong, vibrant community we keep in mind. What help can we offer . . . what programs need support . . . which nonprofit staff members ask for coaching . . . which nonprofit programs need monetary support?

Donors make it all happen. And the Foundation is grateful to each and every one.

Relationships are the key to solutions

2012 End of Year Financial Summary

VALUESAt the core of all we do are four essential values, guiding our

actions and service to our community:

IntegrityCFGV is committed to independent governance, objectivity, and honest leadership. Together these qualities preserve the public

trust. Understanding the importance of innovation, we seek diverse perspectives when identifying needs and determining effective means to address them. All persons and ideas are treated with

respect, openness and fairness.

StewardshipCFGV funds belong to the community. As responsible stewards, we seek to gather, invest, and distribute funds with wisdom and compassion. We manage our entrusted resources in a diligent

and prudent manner. Our grantmaking is relevant, effective, and efficient. While we grow our permanent endowment for the future,

we confidently address today’s needs with today’s dollars.

TransparencyCFGV Board, Advisors and Staff are open and honest with one

another, the community, donors, and grantees. We encourage the highest standards of conduct and ethics in all we do. A culture of respect permeates all activities. We strive to connect all segments

of our community (residents, donors, nonprofit organizations, government and other funders) to the Foundation in order to expand

the effectiveness of our resources. Clear, coherent, and simple communication advances our mission by enhancing the impact of

our image, grantmaking, and strategic use of resources.

InclusivenessVery simply, the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley

exists for everyone in the Gunnison Valley.

Voluntary National Standards criteria exist for community foundations to ensure they are performing at the highest and best level possible. CFGV received the National Standards quality seal in 2007, and is committed to maintaining “operational quality, integrity and accountability” in donor services, investments, grantmaking and administration. It’s an honor we work hard for and take very seriously.

MaintainingHigh Standards

OUR BOARD,ADVISORS & STAFF

This wonderful group of people are Givers with a capital “G” – sharing their time, energy, expertise and resources with the community they love. Through their unparalleled generosity and 100% participation, all of the Foundation’s operating internal costs are covered. This provides donors the knowledge that their gifts go directly to the community – not to administrative costs.

Our Board and Advisors bring associations from many fields of endeavor, including business, nonprofits, banking, investment, gove rnmen t , educa t ion , accounting, law, architecture, industry, art, real estate, environment, volunteerism, – some full-time, others part-time, actively working or actively retired.

We appreciate, honor, and gratefully thank each and every member listed below.
