Dear Portsmouth Friends,

“Understand and take responsibility for yourself, pursue your passions in a world of new

opportunities, and act in the interests of your fellow global citizens. You will be successful!

You are prepared!” With these words I concluded my Commencement remarks to the

Portsmouth Abbey Class of 2012.

Everyone who has offered time, talent, and treasure to our School has helped to pre-

pare the most recent Portsmouth graduates for the future. Our yearly collective efforts to

sustain and enhance Portsmouth Abbey School’s ability to execute its Mission are palpable

as Sixth Formers become alumni on the Holy Lawn each May.

Through contributions in support of people, programs, and plant under the auspices

of Growing in Knowledge & Grace: The Campaign for Portsmouth Abbey School we have

achieved significant accomplishments during the last eight years: the construction of two

major houses, St. Brigid’s & St. Martin’s; a thorough renovation of the Abbey Church of

Saint Gregory the Great; installation of two energy-efficient, environmentally friendly

faculty residences; creation of 19 new endowed scholarship funds; and the establishment

of faculty chairs in Mathematics and English.

Additionally, through Annual Fund participation since 2004-05, literally thousands of

alumni, parents, and friends have become capital campaign donors. I, along with my

colleagues on the Board of Regents, am tremendously thankful for the unrestricted operat-

ing support provided yearly by the Fund. I call your attention to the donors listed in this

Annual Report whose names are followed by one or more Ravens. These icons recognizing

years of consecutive giving denote loyal friends of Portsmouth who have made the School

a priority year after year, decade following decade. In this context I direct you to the

announcement of Portsmouth’s inaugural class of Regents Emeriti that follows this letter.

The alumni comprising this special group have truly had Portsmouth’s best interests in mind

for decades.

By taking responsibility for our School we are preparing Portsmouth, and in turn its

graduates, for the future. I thank all who are playing a part in this process. I look forward

to the exciting year ahead as we conclude Growing in Knowledge & Grace: The Campaign

for Portsmouth Abbey School and celebrate Jim and Deb’s final year.

Sincerely,

John M. Regan III ’68, P’07

Dear Friends,

I wish to express my sincere thanks to all members of the Portsmouth Abbey community for the warm

manner in which you have responded since the January 20 announcement that the 2012-13 academic year will

be my last as Headmaster. Deb and I have already heard from many alumni, parents and friends, and your

reminiscences of our relationships over these nearly 40 years are wonderful and sincerely appreciated. We look

forward to many more exchanges with members of the Portsmouth Abbey family during the coming months.

The year we chronicle with this 2012 Annual Report was, as has become the norm over the last decade, one

of substantial, tangible progress for our School: the installation of the new Blu Homes for faculty families; the

completion of St. Martin’s House construction; and the naming of the inaugural holder of the Kearney Chair in

English. Not to be overlooked is the wonderful St. Andrew’s Day dinner at the Yale Club at which we remem-

bered Dom Andrew and celebrated the establishment of the Jenks Mathematics Chair, our best-ever Annual

Fund result, and a major new commitment for Portsmouth’s first endowed merit scholarship. All of this work was

done with the singular aim of providing the resources to achieve our important Mission.

With a profound sense of gratitude I note the countless hours of work provided the School by volunteers.

From the Board of Regents to our newest alumni Class Leaders, so many are giving the precious commodity of

time to produce positive results for Portsmouth. I would be remiss in not specifically citing the work of Campaign

Chairman Charles Kenahan ’77, P ’12, ’12, ’12. Chuck completed his term of service on the Board of Regents in

June, but fortunately he will continue to Chair Growing in Knowledge & Grace: The Campaign for Portsmouth

Abbey School until its completion in June 2013. His personal enthusiasm and the commitment (including the

graduation of his triplet sons in May) of his family have been deeply meaningful to me personally and to the entire

campus community. Tom Anderson ’73 completes three years of substantial service as Chairman of the Annual

Fund during a period in which alumni leadership of the all-important Annual Fund reached new heights. I thank

Chuck and Tom, but these sentiments are meant for every volunteer.

The next year will bring more achievement to Portsmouth Abbey. I am excited by the opportunities we will

have to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and anticipate the future. I am pleased to announce the

School’s plan to endow its third faculty chair ⎯ The Wolverton Performing Arts Chair will honor Dom Ambrose’s

lifetime of work and will further bolster the School’s Performing Arts Department. Additionally, I am delighted to

share news of Portsmouth’s decisions to proceed with raising funds to underwrite the construction of two turf

athletic fields. These initiatives, along with our ongoing efforts to augment scholarship aid (particularly merit

scholarship funds), secure planning funds for the new science center, and significantly advance our Annual Fund,

will give us much on which to focus.

Once again Deb and I thank the Portsmouth Abbey community for your warmth and support. We look

forward to seeing many, many of you this year.

Sincerely,

James DeVecchi

2 0 1 2 Annual Report 5

Ten years ago the 2002 Annual Report recapped the events of Portsmouth Abbey School’s 75th Anniversary year,

heralded the quiet profound generosity of a recently deceased alumnus, and underscored the preeminent position of

Portsmouth’s Mission in guiding the School’s efforts. Five years ago the 2007 Annual Report celebrated the opening

of St. Brigid’s House, an all-time record for yearly fundraising, and wide ranging initiatives being undertaken to real-

ize the goals of the School’s Strategic Plan. This 2012 Annual Report builds on all that has been accomplished dur-

ing the last decade and the thousands of donors who have made these achievements a reality. We proudly celebrate

advances for plant, people, and programs made possible by Growing in Knowledge & Grace: The Campaign for

Portsmouth Abbey School.

Donations for the year ending

June 30, 2012 were $4,271,152.

This was the sixth consecutive year

that Portsmouth Abbey has received

gifts totaling more than $4,000,000.

Contributions (including cash and

multi-year pledges) for the period

July 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

equaled $4,990,335. 1,878 donors

made nearly 3,400 gifts to

Portsmouth last year!

The Annual Fund achieved a

best-ever result of $1,195,473, and

for the seventh consecutive year the

Fund surpassed the $1.1M level.

The total number of Annual Fund donors equaled 1,614 while the total gifts from these alumni, parents and friends

increased by 27 percent to 2,700. This growth reflects the increasing appeal of monthly recurring donations as a won-

derful means of structuring a gift to Portsmouth Abbey.

The 2011-12 year saw advancements for several major capital campaign initiatives including: the construction

of St. Martin’s House, opening of two new faculty homes north of the Manor House, establishment of the new

Alumni Merit Scholarship Fund, and the naming of Dr. Michael Bonin as the inaugural holder of the Kearney Chair

in English honoring Dom Damian. Growing in Knowledge & Grace: The Campaign for Portsmouth Abbey School has

now spanned eight years and encompasses nearly $42M in charitable giving to Portsmouth Abbey.

The recently published 2012 Summer Bulletin outlines the School’s plans for Growing in Knowledge & Grace:

The Campaign for Portsmouth Abbey School (also available on the Campaign website www.portsmouthabbey.org/cam-

paign). As we enter the Campaign’s final year, the School community is excited by the announcement of plans to

endow the Wolverton Performing Arts Chair honoring Dom Ambrose (see inside back cover of this report) by May 2013.

The excitement for the future is heightened by the generosity of past donors and the knowledge that Portsmouth’s

alumni, parents and friends are invested in the ongoing success of our distinctive School.

2 0 1 2 Annual Report 17

To the Portsmouth Abbey Community,

I am pleased to report that the Annual Fund reached $1,195,473 this year, a record amount for unrestricted

giving. We are thankful to the Board of Regents who led the campaign early in the fiscal year by virtually dou-

bling their gifts from the previous year. The Regents’ generosity set the tone and momentum for all other giving

groups, most notably the alumni, which had a 16.6% increase in dollars donated compared to fiscal year 2010-

11. We also achieved 31% alumni participation, which matched last year’s total, and had significant help from

current parents, parents of alumni, friends and corporate matching gifts.

Every year, the Annual Fund contributes approximately 8% to the operating budget, which helps ensure a

quality student experience. The Annual Fund plays a critical role in helping manage tuition increases while pro-

viding needed revenue for scholarships, faculty salaries, student and residential life activities and critical needs

of the School.

This has been a year of remarkable accomplishments with the completion of St. Martin’s Dorm for boys, the

new Blu Homes for faculty housing, the completion of the Kearney Chair and the new Lourdes-style Grotto. The

generosity of all of Portsmouth Abbey’s constituents – alumni, parents, parents of alumni, faculty/staff, friends

and corporate sponsors – have allowed this institution to continue to grow and prosper. We are deeply indebted

to their unwavering generosity and belief in the mission and values that are espoused by this very special place.

For the past three years, it has been my privilege and honor to serve as Annual Fund Chair of our School. I

have had the wonderful opportunity to meet many alumni, parents, faculty and staff that I would otherwise never

meet and all of them have made deep impressions on me. As I pass the torch to Pat Gallagher ’81, P’15 to lead

the Annual Fund for the next three years, I’d like to thank Mac Regan ’68, Jim DeVecchi and Abbot Caedmon

for their support and faith in me in leading this endeavor. I don’t think we could have accomplished what we have

for the Annual Fund without the tireless efforts of Polly Antol, Director of the Annual Fund, and the wonderful

people in the Development Office. I have valued Polly’s counsel and encouragement these many years and look

forward to working with her as I return to focus more fully on my own class. Lastly, I thank my fellow alumni

who serve as decade chairs, notably Bryan McGuirk ’81, Jim Sturdevant ’64, George Carter ’85, Michael Anselmi

’97 and Alex Mouligné ’00, as well as the members of the Alumni Leadership Council for their dedication to and

enthusiasm for the School. Portsmouth Abbey’s future is looking very bright indeed.

Yours in Portsmouth Abbey,

Thomas D. Anderson ’73

PortsmouthAbbey School

Green Club

We want to send special thanks to

those members of the Portsmouth

Abbey School Green Club who

have chosen to set up monthly

recurring giving through credit

cards and bank account with-

drawals. Each member is conserving

the School’s resources monetarily

and environmentally. These donors

are marked by a turbine symbol [A]

next to their name in the donor lists.

Monthly recurring giving allows

donors to increase their Annual

Fund gift by donating over many

months in each fiscal year. Thank

you for your support of the Annual

Fund and the Portsmouth Abbey

School mission!

26 Portsmouth Abbey School

reunion giving statement

Over the past few years reunion classes have increased giving to

Portsmouth in support of the excellence of Portsmouth’s faculty and

students. In 2011-12, funds donated by reunion classes ending in 1’s and 6’s

raised the bar with restricted and unrestricted donations totaling $845,035.

We need to continue to build on this momentum as we look to the 2012-13

fund year.

If you find yourself in a reunion year, I hope you will do, or have done

the following:

1. Attend Reunion – get back to campus and see the continued

progress and investment in the School’s students, faculty, facilities,

and programs.

2. Plan Ahead as a Class – think about how your class might make

your reunion gift special with a challenge or larger than usual

annual fund gift. Polly Antol, Director of the Annual Fund, would

be happy to work with your class in identifying what a good goal

might be. In addition, I will be available at reunion to speak with

your class and share ideas if you would like.

3. Give Back – Make a conscious effort to make your reunion gift

special.

My hope is that classes celebrating milestone reunions will continue to

follow in these footsteps with both increased participation and donations.

Thank you to the many alumni and their families who have come back, and

also to those who have given back!

Best regards,

Bryan McGuirk ’81

Headmaster Jim DeVecchi is pleased toannounce the establishment of the WolvertonPerforming Arts Chair in honor of Dom AmbroseWolverton, O.S.B. The Chair recognizes FatherAmbrose’s lifetime commitment to Portsmouth’sstudents, his fidelity as a teacher, and the pervasivesense of humility and excellence that have been hall-marks of his work for decades.

Father Ambrose is a graduate of Phillips ExeterAcademy and Harvard College. While at Harvard, Fr. Ambrose majored in Music. He attended TheJulliard School in the summer of 1950 where he studied piano with Beveridge Webster. He later studied at the Chicago Conservatory of Music andsubsequently taught Latin and music at The ChoateSchool. Father Ambrose entered the Monastery onAugust 15, 1958, and made his profession of vows onSeptember 29, 1959. He hasbeen at Portsmouth Abbeysince then, serving as choir-master, novice master, directorof vocations, and prior. Withinthe School he has been ahouseparent, choral directorand accompanist in addition to teaching Latin, English and music. Dom Ambrose

The Wolverton Chair is the third endowed faculty position that the School is working to create aspart of Growing in Knowledge & Grace: The Campaign forPortsmouth Abbey School. Associate Headmaster DanMcDonough was named the inaugural holder of theJenks Chair in Mathematics in May 2011, and Dr.Michael Bonin was appointed the first holder of theKearney Chair in English in May 2012.

The Wolverton Chair has a minimum fundinggoal of $1,000,000, and the School seeks to realizethis objective by May 2013. Once this level isachieved, the annual distribution from the endowedfund will support the chair holder’s compensationand provide discretionary funds to be used in
