matters IS personal. That’s why we integrate our philanthropy directly
into our corporate operations. Barbara and Patricia’s dream for a
future free from breast cancer has created an undeniable ripple effect.

The Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer Classic is the largest
amateur women’s golf and tennis charity event in the country. Since
1994, committed participants have been taking to the fairway and
the court for a weekend of friendly competition. With the support
of 2,500 valued sponsors and partners, community members and
friends, the Vera Bradley Classic raised more than $1 million in
2012—and has raised $9.3 million to date.

A Gathering of Girlfriends
For the past nine years, more than 500 of our
girlfriends have joined us for a special evening
at Vera Bradley headquarters to celebrate
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Guests
always enjoy the behind-the-scenes Vera Bradley
experiences, food and entertainment, and silent
auction, as well as meeting the research team,
all in the name of a great cause. Together, in 2012,
the ladies-only event raised $78,141.

Updates from the Vera Bradley Foundation
for Breast Cancer Research Laboratories
In just four years, the Vera Bradley Foundation for
Breast Cancer Research Laboratories has become
a hub for scientifi c breakthroughs that are changing
the face of cancer. Today, this “house that hope
built,” located at the Indiana University Melvin and
Bren Simon Cancer Center, hosts 22 labs and 36
university-wide researchers working on 85 different
projects with one shared goal: to end breast cancer.
The Science of Hope The Science of Hope
The Vera Bradley Foundation for
Breast Cancer Research Laboratories
is a hub for scientifi c breakthroughs
that are changing the face of cancer.
Located at the Indiana University Melvin
and Bren Simon Cancer Center, it hosts
22 labs and 43 university-wide researchers
working on 85 different projects with
one shared goal: to end breast cancer.

The latest research fi ndings, all with a single focus:
better outcomes for patients.
Genomics: understanding a person’s genetics may be important in knowing how the cancer spreads
within the body and in how we treat patients to minimize side effects.
Personalized medicine: Through the study of genomics, researchers have
found biomarkers that indicate chemotherapy-induced neuropathy side effects.
Telomerase: an enzyme in cancer cells that keeps them from growing old — think of telomerase
as the fountain of youth for breast cancer cells.
Targeting tumor survival: A novel therapy targeting telomerase is being
tested in patients of various breast cancer types. Research is showing that telomerase
inhibitors work well together with the standard drug Herceptin to halt tumor growth.
Triple-negative breast cancer: when breast cancer cells test negative for estrogen receptors
(ER-), progesterone receptors (PR-) and HER2 (HER2-) —three hormones we can target.
Triple-negative treatment: Genetic sequencing is revealing biomarkers for
potential treatment targets and methods of early detection for this particularly aggressive
form of breast cancer.
Bone health: Drugs
commonly used in heart
patients to help stop
muscle wasting are being
studied in the lab to see
if treatment will work in
the clinic to help patients
maintain strength.
Memory improvement: Researchers are finding
new ways to improve
memory and brain function
(without taking drugs) in
survivors who have had
chemotherapy.
High risk factor improvement: A
common Type 2 diabetes
drug is in Phase I clinical
trials to see if it might help
change breast density
in overweight or obese
women at high risk.
Reduction of side effects: Experiments
with acupuncture to help
improve sleep as well
as reduce hot fl ashes
in postmenopausal
breast cancer survivors
are being conducted.

Team member Bryan P. Schneider, M.D., is lead investigator on a study of 5,000+
breast cancer patients from around the world, with the goal of offering patients personalized
treatment based on which drugs will cause the fewest side effects.
Foundation lab researcher Anna Maria Storniolo, M.D., is leading the Susan G. Komen for
the Cure Tissue Bank, the only normal breast tissue bio-repository of its kind in the world.
It provides healthy tissue samples to investigators around the world—an invaluable key to
research advancements.
