All good things must come to an end; and so it is with the past six years serving on the WatershedCouncil board; the past three years as Board President. I have truly enjoyed the experienceincluding working with my fellow board members,consulting with the staff on various issues, meeting the interns that helpeach summer and most importantly gaining a greater understanding ofour water resources in Northern Michigan and the dedication requiredto protect those resources for all of us.

For someone who spends almost every day on, in, looking at, frustratedwith and loving Little Traverse Bay; I am amazed at how little I knowabout this small piece of Lake Michigan, which is just a small piece ofthe Great Lakes, which is just a small piece of the Great Lakes Watershed.

Sometimes the daily tasks seem overwhelming, because they can be, butthe Watershed Council staff always stays grounded in the science of theproblem, with an extraordinary ability to communicate the problem andits potential solutions to you and me.

As the Watershed Council board transitions into a new year, rest assuredthey are in good hands and that there is no shortage of enthusiasm forthe challenges ahead.

We are all so fortunate to have such a wonderful organization working toprotect the vital resources of Northern Michigan. The work that ourdedicated staff does protecting, restoring and celebrating our lakes,streams and wetlands everyday is so important, it is an effort that trulygoes on 365 Days a Year!

In 2012, we significantly expanded the Prescription and Over-the-counterDrug Disposal (POD) program. Twelve additional POD boxes were installedin 2012 at the following law enforcement agencies: Antrim County Sheriff,Elk Rapids Police Department, Mackinaw City Police Department, EmmetCounty Sheriff, Tuscarora Township Police Department, Cheboygan Departmentof Public Safety, Petoskey Department of Public Safety, Charlevoix CountySheriff, City of Charlevoix Police Department, Grand Traverse County Sheriff andSt. Ignace Police Department. By the end of 2012, we had 17 departmentsparticipating with 20 POD boxes throughout Northern Michigan. The boxesand collection events continue to be heavily used by the public with over3,100 pounds total collected in 2012: 2,400 pounds collected from thePOD Boxes and 700 from community collection events. We have collectedand properly disposed of almost 6,300 pounds of drugs since the inceptionof the program.

We also help obtained passage of a bill to help safely dispose of unusedprescription drugs. The bill, HB 5090, is part of a bipartisan package oflegislation that will improve the system of reusing and disposing of medicationsthat are no longer being used.

In 2012, we increased protections for water resources from oil and gas hydraulic fracturing by working with the DEQ to modify policies and provideinformation to the public including disclosure of Material Safety Data Sheetsand baseline testing procedures.

We also conducted significant educational efforts on hydraulic fracturing,including education of DEQ staff, legislators, industry representatives, andthe public to build a foundation to move forward with legislative action.

The Watershed Council co-hosted a Legislative Breakfast on hydraulic fracturing for Michigan’s elected officials and industry representatives.

We also assisted in the development of the National Wildlife Federation report “Hydraulic Fracturing in the Great Lakes Basin: The State of Play in Michigan and Ohio.”

2012 was a great year for Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council,both financially and operationally. Membership income exceededour budget by 8% and surpassed 2011 by 13%. Because ofour major project with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agencyin the Little Traverse Bay Watershed, our grant income wasover two and a half times more than last year. Expenses werebelow budget. Our investment portfolio was up, thanks to ourinvestment manager’s good work and the positive market.Cash flow provided sufficient funds for operations all year.

The market and our good management provided an increaseto our net assets of nearly $120,000. Our asset Repair andReplacement Fund (ARRF) is now in its second year and increasing in value. We had a successful year obtaining new grant projects beginning in 2013 to continue the work to protect what you love – Northern Michigan waters!

With all the work there is to do all year long, you might think we nevertake a break. At least one day each summer the entire team takes a fullday to spend enjoying what we fight so hard to protect, our vital water resources. In 2012, we decided to perform a “very detailed recreationalassessment” of the sandy beaches at Sturgeon Bay. We are happy to report that fun and relaxation opportunities remain plentiful there.
