Net assets increased by $24 million to $130.3 million, mainly due to positive investment activity. Our most recent patient and resident surveys have been excellent. And, just as the fiscal year was wrapping up, we received word that Connecticut magazine had selected Masonicare as one of twenty “Best Places to Work” in the state.

We have good news to report on many fronts. Throughout our continuum, we have a healthy census and many exciting initiatives underway. We have received over $1 million from Medicare for our early migration to “meaningful use,” which is an electronic medical recordkeeping protocol, and $75,000 from CHEFA for a much-needed wireless upgrade at our Newtown facility. We are hopeful of receiving additional grant money to fund health reform-based opportunities such as case management/patient navigator and community education.

Financially, the good news continued with nearly $173 million in total revenue this fiscal year, which is almost $4 million more than in 2011, and our non-operating income improved by $1 million. Net assets increased by $24 million to $130.3 million, mainly due to positive investment activity.  Our most recent patient and resident surveys have been excellent. Along those lines we were voted “Best Assisted Living” by readers of the New Haven Advocate in the spring, and a few months later received the same designation from the Connecticut Law Tribune. And, just as the fiscal year was wrapping up, we received word that Connecticut magazine had selected Masonicare as one of twenty “Best Places to Work” in the state.

But for all the good news, there remain the very sobering events that took place at the end of the calendar year. First, Superstorm Sandy hit, leaving significant coastal damage and hundreds of thousands of utility customers without electricity. Fifty-two nursing homes in the state were operating under generator power. At our Health Center in Wallingford — where we have over 400 beds — our employees came through with flying colors, arriving early and prepared to stay as long as necessary. In Newtown, for the third time in 15 months, we welcomed townspeople to come in and take hot showers. And in our Norwalk home health office, the hospice team went to extraordinary lengths to make sure their patients had shelter, supplies and the support they needed.

And then, the unimaginable tragedy of December 14. Sandy Hook Elementary School is located a few miles from our Newtown campus, where we employ over 300 people. The outpouring of support and concern from every level of our organization has been tremendous. We are very proud and grateful to all of our employees for their compassion and leadership throughout this difficult time. We continue praying for the families, school staff and first responders as they do their best to go on. Looking ahead, we know Connecticut has a serious budget crisis. We expect to feel the impact in some way — what that will be, we don’t know right now. With two-thirds of our long-term care revenue coming from Medicaid, the potential effect is very concerning. We continue to advocate that both the state and federal governments do everything possible to ensure that frail seniors who need high quality nursing home and at-home care continue to receive it. Thank you for your continued support of Masonicare and our mission.

2012 Financial Performance

In 2012, Masonicare reported total revenues of $172.8 million. This is a $3.8 million increase from the 2011 reported total revenues of $169.0 million.

Operating costs of $175.3 million were $6.6 million higher than the previous year, and non-operating income improved by $1.0 million. This resulted in excess of revenues over expenses of $7.6 million as compared to $9.2 million in 2011.

At the same time, the company’s net assets increased to $130.3 million from $106.2 million, mainly due to positive investment activity.

Note: Certain items on the financial statements were required to be reclassed due to new GAAP requirements. For comparative purposes, these reclasses were made to both years.
