PALESTINE ISD Friday, March 1, 2013

2012-2013

Hello everyone,

Jason Marshall, Superintendent

The countdown has begun, there are 19 days until the first day of Spring on Wednesday, March

20th, and we have Spring Break to look forward to coming up the week of March 11-15th.

I saw my first Dogwood bloom of the season this week, just in time for the 75th Annual Dogwood

Trails Festival that begins the weekend of March 15th-17th and continues the next two weekends.

There will be lots of family activities to enjoy each weekend. For a complete list of events go to

www.texasdogwoodtrails.com.

The community is invited to attend an open house hosted by Palestine High School in the newly renovated Career and Technology Building on Tuesday, March 5th at 5:30 pm. Free hotdogs, drinks, and desserts will be

served in the Wildcat Café.

I enjoyed visiting with many of you this week at the

Lunches in the Lounge. Thank you for your participation

and for all that you do each week. Many thanks to our

PHS Culinary Arts Department for the wonderful lunches.

We know that education is the key to success, so we must

continue to work for what is right for all students to ensure

they receive every opportunity to reach their full potential.

Remember to contact our elected officials and share your

concerns for public education.

The conference will focus on mobile devices in education, best practices to integrate in curriculum, management & infrastructure, and classroom ideas. The event is open to everyone from classroom teachers, administrators, to technology directors. If districts are in the planning stages of acquiring mobile devices or if they have had a 1:1 structure for a while or need ideas to bridge technol-ogy and curriculum, we would love your participation and collaboration. This is an excellent opportunity to net-work with area schools, and share ideas and transform our educational practices to reflect 21st century job skills.

Palestine ISD will be hosting an Educational Technology Conference entitled “iHeartDevices” on August 8, 2013 co-sponsored by

TCEA (Texas Computer Education Agency) and Apple.

Registration is open at tcea.org and more information can be found on the website iHeartDevices.weebly.com. For more information contact Shannon Leisure at extension 1270 or Kim Nelms at 1272.

Black History Month Programs

Thank you goes out to Portia Rodgers Deckard, former PISD Teacher for coming to read to our students. She read the story “ The Coming

of Night”. Long, long ago, when the earth was new, the great river goddess Yemoya sent her daughter Aje to marry a handsome earth chief in the Land of Shining Day. At first Aje was happy, but soon she started to pine for the cool shadows of her mother's realm. So her husband asked Crocodile and Hippopotamus to bring Aje a sackful of Night. As they carried it back, the animals heard strange noises coming from the sack - and curiosity finally got the better of them...James Riordan's retelling of a Yoruba tale, gives an enchanting explanation of the coming of night to our world. Ms. Deckard also read a story called “What Does the President Do?”

The PHS Varsity Choir ended our Black History Month Activities with lots of songs and Mrs. Couch reading “Ragtime Tumpie” to our students The students had a fun time waving their hands and shouting Raz-ma-taz

when it was time to turn the page. The story was about Tumpie, a young black girl who will later become famous as the dancer Josephine Baker. She longs to find the opportunity to dance amid the poverty and vivacious street life
