• We cannot require a social security card for registration
• There will be potential personal litigation if there is failure to comply with state and local guidelines

Rights of an ESOL Student
• Protected under federal, state and local guidelines & Office of Civil Rights
• ELLs are entitled to modified assignments, grades, tests
• Modifications provided on state mandated testing are as needed and given throughout the school year
• Form is required for a failing ELL with modifications listed
• Students cannot be failed if it is due to language acquisition issues

Language Acquisition Process
• Sequence of language acquisition: listening, speaking, reading and writing
• * Silent period may last up to several months
• * Social language learned in about 2 years and academic one in 5 -7
• * State mandated service guidelines = Level 1 and 2 need at least 1 hour a day
• Level 3 less than an hour

Facts about Mayan Culture:
• The Mayans were excellent builders and many of their temples and buildings are aligned to help observers monitor position. For example, many buildings pointed towards the equinoxes or midsummer.
• While other buildings had doorways and windows aligned with the north or south rising of Venus. It is one of the most important celestial bodies to the Mayan culture.
• The Maya Civilization, in and around Guatemala, discovered and used the concept of Zero, before any other culture in the world. It was represented by a shell.
