School-wide Principles for Success

(Behavior Expectations/Standards) A common goal of the staff, parents, and students of Hayden Elementary School is to follow our 6 Pillars of Character and treat one another with respect. We believe that if everyone does what is expected of him/her, our school will be a very positive and productive place to learn. It will also make the school a safer place for everyone.

MANNERS DO MATTER Two basic expectations for all students, parents, and staff members of Hayden Elementary School are as follows: 1. Respect • Treat others as you wish to be treated. • Be prepared. • Be courteous. • Use appropriate language. • Keep hands and feet to self/no fighting. • Listen to each other. • Remember that you represent yourself, family and community. 2. Responsibility • Try your best at all times. • Follow directions. • Complete your school work. • Walk in the building. • If you make a mess, help clean it up. • If you make a mistake, be honest. • Take care of your equipment/school property. • Be on time. Our School-wide Principles for Success are organized into six major categories. 1. Classroom Procedures/ Standards 2. Lunchroom Procedures/ Standards 3. Playground Procedures/ Standards 4. Hallway/Entrance/Exit/Bathroom Procedures/Standards 5. Assembly Procedures/Standards 6. General Standards

HAYDENS 6 PILLARS OF CHARACTER 1. Caring 2. Citizenship 3. Fairness

4. Respect 5. Responsibility 6. Trustworthiness

CLASSROOM STANDARDS Classroom standards/procedures will vary slightly within each student’s classroom, but will be in line with school district policy and the Hayden Elementary School Progressive Discipline Plan. Each teacher will prepare classroom procedures that will be sent home to parents to review and will be available in the office. This is a general list of what a student should be doing to be successful in class: • Treat others as you wish to be treated. • Be prepared. • Be courteous. • Use appropriate language. • Keep hands and feet to self/no fighting. • Listen to each other. • Try your best at all times.

• Follow directions. • Complete your school work. • If you make a mess, help clean it up. • If you make a mistake, be honest. • Take care of your classroom equipment and

school property. • Be on time.

• If a student’s behavior becomes disruptive or unsafe, a teacher may ask the student to go to the office where school-wide procedures and consequences will be considered and implemented.

• A student can be sent to the office if a behavior merits an office referral. • If a student receives three office referrals* (5 minor referrals in the classroom will lead to an office

referral), this may lead to in-house suspension, a Required Parent Conference, or general suspension. It may also lead to an assigned school service project (generally taking the form of helping in the lunchroom or picking up trash on the playground or a mutually-agreed-upon project by the student, teacher/administrator and his/her parents). *Office referrals are generally major incidents that cause a disruption to the learning environment

PLAYGROUND STANDARDS

• Follow directions of staff. • Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself. • Use polite and respectful language and

manners. • Throwing rocks or other dangerous things is not

permitted. • Use playground equipment safely as directed

by staff and following P.E. rules. • Play on the play station assigned to your grade

level. • Go to dots immediately when the school bell

rings to end recess.

• Don’t leave the school grounds or property during school hours.

• Walk on the blacktop as you move from game to game and as you line up.

• No football or tag during morning/lunch recess. • Do not bring personal sports equipment to use

during recess time. These items include, but are not limited to, basketballs, footballs, soccer balls and baseballs.

Rules For Climbing Equipment • Climb in one direction only • Don’t put head or feet between the rungs • Never climb when it is wet • Watch for swinging feet

• Equipment is used for upper body strength only (Not hanging by knees or upside down, and not to sit on top of the bars)

Rules For Slides • Only one person at a time sliding • Quickly move away from the bottom of the

slide • Slide down feet first, always sitting up • Don’t hold on to the sides

• Don’t crawl or run up the slide or go down backwards or head first

• Don’t jump or crawl over the side of the slide

Horizontal Ladders and Rings • Never jump beyond the first rung • Get a good hand grip before your feet leave the platform • One person on a rung at a time • Everyone travels in the same direction • Never walk below people using the equipment • Don’t put feet, legs or your body through the rungs

• No climbing on fences • Don’t throw rocks, dirt, sticks, etc. • No chasing or tagging on the playground • Run in the grassy areas not around the

equipment

• Children should not enter the building without a teacher’s permission

• Follow all safety rules for the playground equipment

• Respect the equipment and others

LUNCHTIME STANDARDS Students at Hayden Elementary School have a 40 minute lunchtime period. After approximately fifteen minutes of lunch recess, students will enter the multi-purpose room to eat lunch. Students should demonstrate responsible behavior in the lunchroom. Students are generally assigned to a group of tables based on grade. We often suggest to students to use their “inside voices (Yellow, quiet conversation voice level),” therefore maintaining a more pleasant eating environment.

Students should walk in an orderly manner as they go to lunch recess and then line up to enter the multi-purpose room to eat lunch. Students will remain seated at their tables, talk quietly, and be courteous during their lunch. Students are expected to behave in the school lunchroom in the same courteous manner as they would at a special dinner or a restaurant. Here is a list of lunchroom expectations: • Once outside for recess, during the first part of the lunch period, students may only re-enter the school

with the permission of a staff member. In an emergency, students will be allowed to come straight into the school’s health office.

• Follow directions of lunch supervisors and those who are on lunch recess duty. • Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself (No throwing of objects/food). • Sharing food with friends is not permitted. • Use inside voices (Yellow, quiet conversation voice level. Children may visit with friends to the left and

right that they are seated with, but shouting, yelling, and being boisterous is not permitted. Turning around behind is not permitted).

• Get utensils, napkins, and condiments before sitting down. Remain in your seats until dismissed. Deposit garbage when dismissed. If you make a mess, help clean it up.

• If you make a mistake, be honest. • Take care of school property. • If a student’s behavior becomes disruptive or unsafe, a teacher or other staff member may ask the student

to go to the office where school-wide procedures and consequences will be considered and implemented. • A student can be sent to the office if a behavior merits an office referral. • If a student receives three office referrals, this may lead to in-house suspension, a Required Parent

Conference, or general suspension. It may also lead to an assigned school service project (generally taking the form of helping in the lunchroom or picking up trash on the playground or a mutually-agreed-upon project by the student, teacher/administrator and his/her parents/guardian).

HALLWAY & BATHROOM STANDARDS • Walk in the hallways using Hayden HALLS (Hands appropriate, All eyes forward, Lips zipped,

Low speed, Space between). • Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself. • Move silently in the hallways during class-time and transitional periods. • Use assigned entrances and exits. • Wash hands (1 push of soap, 1 push of water, 1 paper towel). • Help keep bathrooms clean. If you drop a towel pick it up.

Page 7: 2012-2013 - Clark County School Districttc.ccsd.net/hayden/documents/student_handbook.pdf · School-wide student management plan : ... the School pledge , ... • Show that you have

7

• Use bathrooms appropriately. • Playing with water or in the bathroom is not permitted. • Stay outside during lunch recess period and do not loiter in the bathrooms or exits at any time. • If a student’s behavior becomes disruptive or unsafe, a teacher or other staff member may ask the student

to go to the office where school-wide procedures and consequences will be considered and implemented. • A student may be sent to the office if a behavior merits an office referral.

ASSEMBLY STANDARDS • Walk in the hallways using Hayden HALLS as you come to an assembly or gathering. • Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself. • Move silently in the hallways. • Use assigned entrances sitting quickly, quietly, and leaving a center aisle. • Be patient as students arrive to the assembly or gathering and wait until your teacher seats you. • When at an assembly or gathering, listen to the presenter, clap with your hands to show your gratitude,

and remain seated. • Show that you have good manners by not talking or playing with your neighbor while at an assembly or

gathering. • When the assembly or gathering is over, wait for your teacher or the assembly leader to dismiss your

group. Stay seated until your group is called to leave. Use appropriate exit. • If a student’s behavior becomes disruptive or unsafe, a teacher or other staff member may ask the student

to go to the office where school-wide procedures and consequences will be considered and implemented. • A student can be sent to the office if a behavior merits an office referral.

ASSEMBLIES AND SPECIAL PROGRAMS A number of assemblies and special programs will be scheduled for students throughout the school year. These include programs that will extend and reinforce the school curriculum. Students are expected to be courteous and respectful during assemblies (See Assembly Standards). Teachers will schedule field trips during the school year. Field trips reinforce curricular objectives and provide a fun enhancement to the school routine. Parents or guardians are encouraged to support the logistics of a field trip by being chaperones.

GENERAL STANDARDS The following guidelines apply to all six categories of the School-Wide Principles for Success: • Following directions of staff (teachers, teacher assistants, custodians, librarians, secretaries, school

volunteers, and administration) is expected the first time they are given. • Kicking, fighting, pushing, shoving, tripping, and play fighting are never allowed. • Bullying, teasing, swearing, spitting, and name calling are not allowed. • Throwing of dangerous objects such as rocks, sticks, and sand/pebbles are forbidden. • Games that involve tackling, tagging, kicking, hitting, grabbing, or pushing others are not allowed on the

playground. If a student has a question about the appropriateness of a game, he or she should talk to the P.E. Teacher. There are many games that are physically demanding, fun, and safe that the P.E. Teacher can suggest.

• Use playground equipment and structures safely. For example - slide down inside the slides rather than walking up the slide; do not climb on the outside of the slide; slide down one at a time, rather than piling up in the slides; do not intentionally throw balls at anyone on the play equipment or play tag on the play structure.

• Please do not climb trees and/or break branches. • Climbing of fences or walls in any area of the school is unsafe and forbidden.

DISCIPLINE Good behavior is expected of all students to ensure a positive learning environment.

SCHOOL-WIDE STUDENT MANAGEMENT PLAN

Hayden ES will use a 3-Tier Model for discipline:

• Tier 1- Behaviors which are handled by the teacher in the classroom. *(Minor documentation as needed)

• Tier 2- Behaviors in which administration must speak with the student. • Tier 3-Behaviors in which the student must be removed from the classroom immediately.

*Classroom Teacher Discipline Plan: All classroom teachers will use a form of progressive discipline. Each classroom teacher will create and provide a copy of this to the school office and to the parents of each student in class. These plans will vary slightly from each other, but teachers will design plans that align with the school-wide discipline plan, school district policy and those common practices associated with disciplining students at an elementary school.

Examples of Tier 2 behaviors which warrant a major office referral: o Threat with intent to harm o Unacceptable language directed at an adult o Property Damage/Vandalism o Threatening/intimidating behavior

o Habitual Bullying o Harassment o 5 Tier 1 Offenses (Attach Tier 2 Behavior

Log)

Examples of Tier 3 which warrant immediate removal from class: o Violence to another person (One-sided

physical contact) o Fighting o Inappropriate touching of another student o Sexual Harassment

o Arson/Combustible o Fire Alarm Pull o Possession of Weapons/Narcotics o Attempting to leave school grounds

9

SCHOOL-WIDE CONSEQUENCES FOR TIERS 2 OR 3 When students are referred to the office for either Tiers 2 or 3, the structure for discipline is below and is in alignment with Pub 777- Behavior Positively in School for Elementary Students:

Tier 2

• Office referrals are sent to the office • The student(s) are picked up from the classroom • A student conference/Investigation is held • Redirection & Admonitions are always used: Students are strongly warned against displaying

behaviors that are against classroom or school-wide rules/procedures. Students are redirected toward correct behaviors and plans are put in place for corrective action. Either 1 or more of the following will also follow:

o Informal Talk o Documented in SASI o Mediation with other students as

needed o Parent Notification o Time out in the office o In-School Discipline

o In-School Suspension o Logical/natural consequence o LUNCH DETENTION (if assigned in

the office, student will be supervised in the office)

o RPC with or without removal o Suspension

Tier 3

• Office is called to have the student removed from the classroom. If the student can be escorted by another student, that is an acceptable option.

• A student conference/Investigation is held • Redirection & Admonition are always used: Students are strongly warned against displaying behaviors

that are against classroom or school-wide rules/procedures. Students are redirected toward correct behaviors and plans are put in place for corrective action. Either 1 or more of the following will also follow: • Documented in SASI • Mediation with other students as

needed • Parent Notification • Time out in the office • In-School Discipline • In-School Suspension • Logical/natural consequence • LUNCH DETENTION (if assigned in the

office, student will be supervised in the office)

• RPC with or without removal • Suspension • RPC with Temporary Removal,

SUSPENSION, and EXPULSION Recommendation: An administrator or designee can only give this consequence. This consequence is reserved for severe behaviors and habitual behavioral referrals.

STUDENT INCENTIVE PROGRAMS

STUDENT OF THE MONTH Students strive to achieve more when they know that an incentive is attainable. This year, all teachers in grades 1-5 will submit one student each month to be the Student of the Month. These students will be recognized during morning ceremony and be honored with a certificate, a prize, and lunch with the Principal.

TRIMESTER AWARDS ASSEMBLIES Awards assemblies will be held at the end of each trimester to honor students for excellent citizenship, exemplary trimester attendance, academic improvements, progress, and honor roll (third trimester only).

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR INCENTIVE PROGRAMS Each class has a classroom management plan that includes consequences and rewards, which requires the cooperation of staff, students, and parents. Your child’s teacher will communicate with you regarding classroom rules. You will be notified if your child’s behavior needs your attention. Repeated misbehavior may result in a conference among the teacher, student, and parent. Frequent communication between the school and home is encouraged. Our goal is to accentuate the positive!

HAYDEN TAGS Students receive points for displaying positive characteristics and can exchange these points for a tag. Examples of some of these characteristics are: Fairness, Trustworthiness, Citizenship Respect, Responsibility, Caring.

HARASSMENT POLICY Hayden is a NO PLACE FOR HATE/BE KIND SCHOOL

No Place for Hate Promise: I promise to do my best to treat everyone fairly. I promise to do my best to be kind to everyone-even if they are not like me. If I see someone being hurt or bullied I will tell a teacher. Everyone should be able to feel safe and happy at school. I want our school to be a NO PLACE FOR HATE. Clark County School District Policy, 5141.2, is in effect prohibiting all forms of student harassment. In summary, the policy states: • “Harassment is any verbal, visual, or physical conduct which is sufficiently severe, persistent or pervasive

that it adversely affects or has the purpose or logical consequence of interfering with the student’s educational program or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive school atmosphere.”

• “Harassment, whether it is by students, staff, or third parties in the community, is strictly prohibited, and will subject the perpetrator to disciplinary action.”

• “Harassment, regardless of its basis, is prohibited.” Common types of harassment include, but are not limited to: unwanted touching, threats, slurs, epithets, verbal abuse, derogatory comments, gestures or pictures, unwelcome jokes or propositions, graphic comments about an individual’s body, display of sexually suggestive objects in the educational environment, and retaliation against an individual who reports a violation of this policy. Any student who feels that he or she is a victim of harassment should contact his or her teacher or principal. Copies of the full policy are available in the school office. If, as a parent, you are upset about how another child has treated your child at school, the best course of action is to inform the school office. We will help mediate the situation so that the process and resolution is kept safe for all parties involved.

BULLYING, CYBER-BULLYING, HARASSMENT, and INTIMIDATION A. Bullying means a willful act or course of conduct on the part of one or more pupils which is not authorized by law and which exposes a pupil repeatedly and over time to one or more negative actions which is highly offensive to a reasonable person and is intended to cause and actually causes the pupil to suffer harm or serious emotional distress. B. Cyber-bullying means bullying through the use of electronic communication. “Electronic communication” means the communication of any written, verbal or pictorial information through the use of an electronic device, including, without limitation, a telephone, a cellular phone, a computer or any similar means of communication. C. Harassment is any verbal, visual or physical conduct that is sufficiently severe, persistent or pervasive that adversely affects, or has the purpose or logical consequence of interfering with a student’s educational program or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive school atmosphere because of that person’s actual or perceived race, color, national origin, sex (including non-conformity to gender stereotypes), sexual orientation, age, disability, and/or religious preference. Harassment, whether it is by students, staff, or third parties in the school community, is strictly prohibited, and will subject the perpetrator to disciplinary action. D. Intimidation means a willful act or course of conduct that is not otherwise authorized by law and:

a. Is highly offensive to a reasonable person; and b. Poses a threat of immediate harm or actually inflicts harm to another person or to the property of another person.

Examples of bullying, cyber-bullying, harassment and intimidation include, but are not limited to, behaviors that ridicule, degrade, or harass a person because of that person’s actual or perceived race, color, national origin, age, sex (including non-conformity to gender stereotypes), sexual orientation, disability, and/or religious preferences such as: 1. Unwelcome comments, ethnic, racial, or anti-gay slurs or jokes, threats; 2. Cartoons, graffiti, posters, visuals, etc., with offensive connotations though nothing shall prohibit use of such materials for genuine academic, educational, or instructional purposes; 3. Sabotage, criticism, unreasonable monitoring of student’s work, etc., and or 4. Hitting, intentionally blocking the path of, body, hand, or facial gestures.

CCSD Regulation 5141.2 Discipline: Harassment and CCSD Policy 5137 Safe and Respectful Learning Environment provides further detail regarding the district’s policy against harassment

WEAPONS There are stringent guidelines, according to Nevada State Law and C.C.S.D. Regulation 5141.1, regarding weapons. Please be sure that the following items DO NOT come to school with your child: • Guns, knives, other weapons (including but not limited to razor blades, ice picks, dirks, or other sharp

instruments, nun-chucks, brass knuckles, pipes, Chinese stars, billy clubs, and machetes) • Inflammable material (including but not limited to bombs, fireworks, or firecrackers, or any other items

that may cause bodily injury or death) • Simulated weapons which include, but are not limited to, any “toy” or nonfunctional implement that bears

a substantial visual resemblance to any item noted above. Please talk to your child about the importance of these regulations. When we have reasonable safety concerns, backpacks and/or desks will be searched. Be advised that if weapons are found in your child’s possession, he/she will be suspended.

12

EMERGENCY ILLNESS OR INJURY If your child becomes ill or is injured during school hours, he/she will be sent to the nurse’s office. You will be contacted to pick up your child so that he/she may be properly cared for at home. It is essential for the school to have emergency data: a current phone number for your residence and place of employment and emergency numbers in case of accident or illness. If this information changes during the school year, please notify the school immediately. Clark County School District provides a school nurse for one or two days per week and a qualified First Aid Safety Assistant is available during the school day. Elementary schools do not have facilities to care for sick or injured children for an extended period of time.

MEDICATION If a child under a physician’s care is well enough to be in school but requires medication during the school day, Form CCF-643 (Medication Release – Legal Release Information Regarding Medication During School Hours)- must be completed by the parent/guardian and placed on file in the health office. Complete instructions and guidelines for receiving medication at school are outlined in a separate “Elementary School Health Services” brochure (these are available at our office). Please refer to this brochure for more detailed answers to some of the common problems and questions about school and health. If you need further information, please call the School Nurse or First Aid Safety Assistant for additional information. Under no circumstances is the school allowed to give any medication without a prescription and a signed medical release. This includes over the counter medication such as cough drops, headache medicine, etc.

CURRICULUM The school district has implemented the Common Core State Standards. You can find more information about these standards at www.corestandards.org. Teachers will be prepared to use a variety of instructional materials, resources, and activities to help students understand skills or concepts. Parents or Guardians are welcome to schedule a conference with their child’s teacher at any time regarding the curriculum, textbooks, or subjects to be taught. Students are ultimately responsible for their own learning. Even the best-planned quality instruction requires an attentive and receptive student.

READING COMPREHENSION Points of discussion for Fictional stories:

1. What is the setting (where does the story take place?)? 2. Who are the main characters? 3. What is the plot (What happened in the story? Beginning? Middle? End?)

a. What was the problem/conflict? b. What was the sequence of events? c. What was the outcome or resolution to the problem?

4. What was the theme (What big idea did the author want the reader to take away from the story?)? Points of discussion for Non-fictional stories:

1. Identify who or what (person, place, or thing) a paragraph is mostly about. 2. Identify the most important information about who or what. 3. Write one main-idea statement of 10 words or less for each important paragraph 4. Identify key highlighted vocabulary in the reading. 5. Identify titles, sub-titles, pictures, graphs, or definitions.

Self monitoring while reading: 1. Do I have a sense of when and where the story takes place (Non-fiction: Topic)? 2. Have I identified the main character (Non-fiction: Subject of study)? 3. Do I understand the problem (Non-fiction: What I am learning about)? 4. Am I following the plot (Non-fiction: Do I understand what I am reading)?

ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT WORK In accordance with the Clark County School District, it is the policy of Hayden Elementary School to measure students’ growth on the achievement of mastering grade level skills as aligned to the Common Core State Standards. It is the responsibility of each teacher to assess student work and to keep accurate records of student mastery on assessments. Proficiency toward mastery of grade level standards is reported on progress reports and on report cards as Emergent, Approaches, Meets, or Exceeds standards. The growth a student demonstrates on his/her report card should not come as a surprise to parents or guardians. The proficiency levels reflected on the formal report card should reflect the information received on periodic (at least every 3 weeks) progress reports. It is recommended that parents carefully review progress reports sent home, homework, classwork, projects, and any graded assessments. If a parent hasn’t received a periodic progress report, they should contact their child’s teacher immediately.

Student grades are based on a student’s performance on assessments administered after students have had ample opportunity to master the Common Core State Standards. Students will work toward mastery and communicate their level of proficiency through homework, classwork, participation, writing, reading, listening, speaking, and various group activities. All of these learning activities are important for the teacher and the student, but will not be recorded in the gradebook. Students’ achievement will be marked and graded as follows: Ex=Exceeds the standards-Your child consistently makes in-depth inferences and applications that go beyond what was taught and expresses in-depth understanding at high levels, sometimes a likened to expectations at the next grade level. Me=Meets the standards-Your child independently demonstrates mastery of all learning targets in the Meets and Approaches levels both in isolation and in conjunction with skills from other standards within the grade level with no major errors or omissions. Ap=Approaching the standards-Your child demonstrates all of the learning targets at the Approaches level according to the grade level rubric with no major errors or omissions. However, (s)he still exhibits major omission or errors in the more complex ideas and processes, requiring some occasional prompts, cues, or assistance to reduce those errors and complete grade level tasks related to this standard and/or skills from other standards. Em=Emergent-Your child demonstrates limited understanding of the learning targets in the Approaches level and requires significant assistance in order to complete grade level tasks related to this standard and/or skills from other standards.

HOMEWORK POLICY The Clark County School District’s policy is that homework assignments should generally be an outgrowth of classroom interests and activities. The student should always understand the purpose of the homework assignment and be certain as to what to do or what to look for. Additional homework assignments may be assigned to meet student needs, focus on special projects, or complete make-up work. The purpose of homework is to practice and maintain previously learned skills. Additionally, homework builds student responsibility, develops study skills, and promotes family involvement in the child’s education. Additional reasons for homework can be Preparation: an introduction of material presented in future lessons. These assignments aim to help students learn new material when it is covered in class; extension: asking students to apply skills they already have in new situations; or integration: requiring students to apply many different skills to a large task, such as book reports, projects, creative writing. Along with regular homework, your child should be reading or be read to at least 15 minutes a night at the primary level and longer in the intermediate grades. A quiet and well-lit space should be provided for homework. Parents can participate by examining the work, but not completing it for the child.

SCHOOL VISITS All parents or guardians are welcome to visit in order to participate in school functions, volunteer, or just come by to see the work students are doing. Please inform the office upon arrival and set up a time with the teacher to visit. All visitors are required to sign in and obtain a visitor’s pass.

LIBRARY POLICY Students may check out books from the library. Books are checked out for one week and may be renewed. Please be aware that students are responsible for the books they check out. • If a book is lost or damaged, the student must pay for it. • Pencils may be purchased in the library. The main goal of the library program is to promote a love of reading. Various reading incentive programs will be held throughout the year, such as the Accelerated Reader Program. Parents are encouraged to become involved in their children’s reading by listening to them read, talking about the story, reading together, or having the child read to family members. One of the most powerful ways a parent can influence a child’s reading skills is by simply reading to them as often as possible. Choose a book that you and your child/children would enjoy no matter what level and read to them. This simple act can increase a student’s comprehension skills and can build positive family memories.

ATTENDANCE & TRUANCY What happens if a student continues to be truant? When a student exceeds two (2) unexcused absences (truancies), the student is declared a habitual truant, and the school must report the student to the local law enforcement agency or school police to file an educational neglect complaint (Child Protective Services) for elementary students or the issuance of a truancy citation for secondary students. What are the consequences for being cited as a habitual truant? Elementary school truancy violations will be referred to Child Protective Services(CPS) for investigation. The possible consequences that may be imposed for secondary student violators are as follows: first offense-supervision by a probation officer or warning; second offense- court appearance, eight to sixteen hours of community service at the school of attendance, suspension of the student’s driver’s license for 30 days-6 months or a delay of 30 days from the date a student can apply for a first-time license and a $100 fine. The consequences for a secondary school student who is issued a misdemeanor truancy citation cannot be appealed through the school. In addition, students who exceed the limitation of absences are subject to the consequences as set forth in CCSD Regulations 5113 and 5123. What happens if the habitually truant student is cited again for truancy? Another misdemeanor citation is issued to the secondary school student. The consequences for subsequent citations- assigned additional hours of community service, court assigned curfew and/or house arrest, 60 days-1 year suspension of driving privileges, suspension of work permit and $200 fine. In addition, if the parent/guardian, to whom notice of the habitual truancy has been given, fails to prevent the child’s subsequent truancy within that school year, the parent/guardian is guilty of a misdemeanor. Parents/Guardians of habitually truant elementary students who do not attempt to insure their children’s regular attendance at school will be referred to Child Protective Services for investigation of educational neglect or to law enforcement for possible issuance of a misdemeanor citation. Regular attendance at school is a necessity if students are to achieve to their fullest potential. Parents/Guardians are urged to work with school personnel to resolve issues that may interfere with their student’s school attendance. Who must attend school? Pursuant to Nevada Revised Statute (NRS) 392.040, students between the ages of 7 and 17 years of age must enroll and attend school for the entire time the school is in session. Students who are 6 years of age must attend school, if enrolled, for the entire time the class in which they are enrolled is in session. Enrolled students who are 17 years of age are subject to the state truancy laws until they reach their 18th birthday. ALL students enrolled must follow the rules of the school district including those relating to school attendance. What is the procedure that should be followed after an absence? Students who have been absent must provide notice from the parent/guardian to the school explaining the reason for the absence within three (3) school days after their return from the absence. Parent/Guardian explanations should include the following information: 1. The first and last name of the student; 2. The date(s) the student was absent; and 3. The reason the student was physically or mentally unable to attend, how the absence was related to the student’s disability, or the nature of the emergency. The principal/designee will determine whether the absence is classified as excused or unexcused. Students or parents/guardians are allowed three school days after the return from a student’s absence to request homework. Schools must provide at least three school days for the assignment to be completed and submitted. Failure of the student to make up missed work from an excused absence will result in an unexcused absence counting toward the limitation of absences. What happens if notification regarding the absence is not provided to the school within three (3) school days? If an acceptable explanation of the absence is not provided within three school days, the absence is unexcused and, in accordance with NRS 392.130, is deemed a truancy. How do parents/guardians arrange an absence? Parents/Guardians must submit a written request to the school prior to the absence(s). The maximum number of arranged absences is 10 per school year. Forms to request an arranged absence are available at each school.

2What happens if a student is late to school or class? Students who are late are marked tardy. Each school is responsible for establishing a tardy policy that defines tardiness and establishes the consequences for students who are late to class. In addition, secondary students who miss more than 30 minutes of any class period are counted absent for that period only. Schools with unique schedules will establish a time limit equivalent to the traditional schools. What is the limitation of absences? The limitation of absences for elementary students is twenty (20) total absences per year. The limitation of absences for secondary students is ten (10) total absences per semester. Schools with unique schedules such as a block schedule, will establish the absence limitation comparable to the secondary schools using the traditional class schedule. Arranged absences in excess of 10 during the school year and any arranged absences for which the makeup work was not completed and submitted, as required by the teacher, count toward the limitation of absences. What are the consequences for exceeding the limitation of absences? Elementary students may be retained in the current grade. Secondary students will receive a denial of credit for any course in which the limitation of absences has been exceeded. Students in grades 9-12 who fail three or more courses may be retained and/or referred to an alternative program. Secondary schools are required to provide written documentation to students and parents/guardians regarding options for making up deficient credits. Is there an appeal process to address possible retention and denial of credit? All schools are required to provide a written copy of the appeal process procedures to parents/guardians. If a parent/guardian believes that extenuating circumstances, issues that may have led to the excessive absence and/or mistakes in the record have been made, the parent may appeal to the principal/designee. The established final level of appeal is the appropriate Performance Superintendent. When attendance problems arise, is assistance available to students and parents? Each school has developed an Attendance Incentive Plan and compiled a list of resources and interventions that may be helpful to students and parents. Parents/Guardians should contact the school counselor or school administration for further information and/or to schedule an appointment. When is an absence considered truancy? When a student is absent from school without a valid excuse, did not secure prior permission for the absence or did not make up the class work for an excused absence, the absence is unexcused. In addition, failure to provide an excuse within three (3) school days will result in an unexcused absence. In accordance with NRS, an unexcused absence is deemed truancy. The goal of attendance enforcement is to: • Increase student achievement through improved attendance • Communicate to parent/guardians the importance of regular attendance • Communicate the value of the educational opportunities provided by our instructional staff • Collaborate with parents in developing a plan to promote your child’s success in school through daily attendance

PERSONAL BELONGINGS Many personal items brought to school are lost or broken. It is impossible for the school to assume responsibility for such items as telephones, radios, iPods, pocket PC’s, tape recorders, toys, rollerblades, scooters, pets, sports equipment, money, etc. The best way to prevent loss of personal items is to leave them at home. Dangerous items such as bats, skates, skateboards, and hardballs are not allowed on campus. Personal sports equipment such as cleats, basketballs, footballs and dodge balls are not allowed at school. The school will provide any needed sporting equipment.

LOST & FOUND A Lost and Found bin, which generally holds clothing and lunch pails, will be available and placed in the multi-purpose room. Loss of student items will be greatly reduced if student items are clearly labeled with the child’s name and room number. We do not recommend that items be marked on the outside of an object (for example: A child’s name placed boldly on his/her backpack). As lost and found items are collected, we will periodically lay all the items out for students to see during the lunch period. If lost items are not claimed over a long period of time, the items will be donated to local organizations that can utilize used or slightly used clothing or items. Unfortunately, we are unable to house large numbers of clothing or lost items for extended

periods of time.

STUDENT STORE Students may purchase various items at the student store. Some of these items may include pencils, erasers, stress balls, drinks, and snacks that fall within the health guidelines of the Clark County School District. The Student Store will be open during lunch. Students are allowed to spend no more than one dollar.

EARLY DISMISSAL POLICY Extreme care is exercised at all times in the release of children to adults. If it is necessary for your child to leave school early for a medical reason, family obligation, etc..., he/she should bring a note from you stating the time he/she is to be dismissed and give that note to his/her teacher. The child will be released, by the office, from his/her classroom when the parent or guardian arrives to pick the child up. At that time the parent or guardian will be required to sign the office release log and will be asked to show a photo ID. • A child will not be released to a person who is not listed on the enrollment card (Registration Application #705). If, as a parent or guardian, you have someone you would like to add to your child’s enrollment card, please come to the school office and update this information. If an adult comes in to pick up your child, and he/she is not listed on the child’s enrollment card, you will be contacted to verify that this particular person is authorized to take your child. • Students may not be picked up after 2:45 p.m. as it involves a disruption of instructional time to all students. Students being picked up prior to 2:45 p.m. will not be called down to wait in the office until the authorized person who is picking them up has presented proper identification to the office staff.

SCHOOL TELEPHONE The school office is the center of activities and is busy at all times. The school telephone may be used by students in case of an emergency or necessity; however, it should be used with discretion – not to obtain permission to visit with friends, etc. Students are encouraged to use good judgment in phone use and to be patient when waiting to use the phone. It is also recommended that when a student uses a personal cellular phone that they notify his/her teacher that they are calling home or trying to contact parents. Use of cellular phones must be based on the Clark County School District Policy. CLARK COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT POLICY 5136 Personal Communication Devices I. The use by students of personal communication devices such as cell phones, pagers/beepers or other

similar electronic communication devices, is prohibited at all district school campuses during the instructional day. As long as use is not disruptive, students may use these devices during scheduled nutrition or lunch periods and while on district buses.

A. These devices must remain off during instructional time including passing periods. B. Students who violate this policy will be disciplined as provided for in the Clark County School District’s

Behavior Guidelines for Secondary Students and the Elementary Students Behaving Positively at School.

SCHOOL RECORDS Twenty-four hour notice is required for copies of report cards, cumulative folders, or test results. Only legal guardians may receive copies of student records.

PARENT CONFERENCES Keeping informed of student progress is important and conferences are encouraged. Since teachers’ schedules vary, it is best to arrange appointments with teachers by contacting the office and leaving a message, either hand written or by voicemail, for the teacher. Teachers are unable to meet or speak with parents during class time, as this is a disruption to the learning process. There will be at least one formal parent conference period scheduled during this school year, but parents are welcomed and encouraged to contact their child’s teacher anytime they have a question or are interested in discussing the progress their child is making. There may be a time when you need to contact someone at the school regarding a concern about your child or another issue.

Here is our list of procedures: 1. What is the first step? If you have a “classroom” academic or behavior concern, please contact your child’s

teacher by calling the school office. If your child’s teacher is unavailable to come to the phone, please leave a detailed message and your child’s teacher will contact you. If your concern has to do with a school-wide procedure, please contact the office.

2. When is it time to involve an administrator? In most cases, an academic matter can best be resolved through contacting the teacher and discussing the concern over the phone or in a parent-teacher conference. Because your child’s teacher is your best link to the classroom, it is essential that you speak with the teacher about your concerns. If the matter seems to remain unresolved, it is then appropriate to contact the school office and set up an appointment with an administrator. It cannot be emphasized enough that an essential step in resolving any classroom concern is to contact your child’s teacher. This will give you more information and will give the teacher an opportunity to explain or clarify the situation. In most cases, the principal or assistant principal will invite your child’s teacher to come to the meeting you have scheduled, unless you request otherwise. Getting everyone together that has a vested interest in your child’s success is the best way to assist you, the teacher, and the principal in identifying the concern and more effectively assisting with any future decisions regarding your child.

Sometimes it is helpful to have your child present. A child’s presence in a meeting with a parent and the teacher is a delicate matter, and as a team, we will need to determine if your child’s presence will help in resolving the matter. Most of the time, a child’s presence does assist the team in more clearly identifying a need and determine all the facts surrounding a circumstance. Special note: At Hayden E.S. we want to resolve concerns professionally, compassionately, and efficiently. Whenever an important decision needs to be made regarding a child, scheduling an appointment can help all parties prepare the best course of action. It is essential that we work together as a team to settle any disputes or concerns. When contacting the school, please provide a detailed message which will be given to either the teacher or principal, especially if you are unable to speak directly to the teacher or principal at the time that you call. Under most general circumstances, you should receive a call back during that school day or within a 24-hour period. Sometimes a matter can be resolved through a phone call. When a meeting is more appropriate, a meeting can be scheduled by you with your child’s teacher or with the principal. A meeting may be terminated if any team member is extremely discourteous, uses profanity, or is inappropriate in gesture or language. It is in the best interest of your child and the school to resolve concerns without confrontational language which creates additional stress. All team members (parents/guardians, teacher, and the principal) have a vested interest in your child’s success as a student and in the resolution of any concerns.

Campus Club is our authorized vendor and can assist you in making clothing purchases. The following is the CCSD general dress guideline: The Clark County School District (CCSD) reserves the right to insist that the dress and grooming of students be within the limits of generally accepted community standards and those students shall be required to show proper attention to personal cleanliness. Students’ dress, personal appearance and conduct are required to be of such character as to not disrupt or detract from the educational environment of the school. Any style that tends to diminish instructional effectiveness or discipline control by teachers, or which is a potential safety hazard, is not acceptable. CCSD Regulation 5131 stipulates the following:

• Require the wearing of shoes with soles. House slippers and shoes with wheels are not permitted. • All clothing must be sufficient to conceal any and all undergarments. No skin will show between

bottom of shirt/blouse and top of pants or skirts at any time. • All sleeveless shirts must have straps at least three inches wide. Prohibited tops include, but are not

limited to, crop tops, tank tops, strapless, low-cut clothing, clothing with slits, or tops and outfits that provide minimum coverage.

• Require that all shorts, skorts, skirts, and jumpers/dresses must be at fingertip length. • All jeans, pants, and trousers must be secured at waist level. Sagging is strictly prohibited. Jeans, pants,

and trousers are not to have rips or tears that expose undergarments and/or are located mid-thigh or higher.

weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or drug paraphernalia, or clothing that contains threats are prohibited.

• Spiked or studded clothing, jewelry, and/or accessories are prohibited. • Outerwear such as coats, mittens, and scarves must be removed upon entering the

classrooms/buildings. Administrators, teachers, and staff may use their discretion as appropriate based on the temperature in the facility.

The principal shall retain the authority to grant exceptions for special occasions and/or conditions. For the safety of students, tennis shoes are requested for P.E. Students riding bicycles to travel to and from school should observe common safety rules. No bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, or Heelies are allowed on the playground, in the bus parking or the parking lot in front of the school on the Hayden campus. Racks and a locked enclosure are available for bicycles; however, students who ride them must have a lock to secure their bicycles inside the enclosure. Please remember that expensive bicycles are at risk for theft and vandalism during school hours. The school assumes no responsibility for theft or damage. Due to safety reasons, we strongly recommend that Kindergarten students do not bring bikes to school. In the event that a half-day Kindergarten student rides his/her bike to school, he/she may lock up his/her bicycle inside the kindergarten play area that is surrounded by fencing.

SAFE KEY SAFEKEY is a before and after school supervised program for school children. The program is a service provided by the North Las Vegas Recreation Department. For more information regarding the SAFEKEY Program, call 633-1608.

SUPPLIES & TEXTBOOKS Textbooks are furnished by the school district. However, the students must pay for books that are lost or damaged. At the beginning of the school year, the teachers will send home a list of requested items. Parents are under no obligation to provide any of these items. Providing any additional resources is on a voluntary basis and is at the discretion of the parent or guardian. During the year, teachers may request that students purchase current event publications or other materials for special classroom activities. Pencils can be purchased in the library.

TRANSPORTATION Riding the bus is a privilege. Students who live two miles or more from school are eligible for bus transportation. Strict rules of behavior for students have been adopted by the Clark County School District in order to protect the safety of the students. Safety is a priority at Hayden Elementary and the transportation division of the school district. A student’s transportation experience begins from the moment they arrive at a bus stop until they are dropped off at the bus stop later in the day. The bus driver may issue citations to students who do not obey school bus regulations or if it is determined that a child acted inappropriately at the bus stop. Transportation privileges may be revoked if a student’s behavior on the bus or at the bus stop does not meet bus behavior standards on a consistent basis. To find out if your child is eligible for bus transportation please go to: http://transportation.ccsd.net If a student misses his/her bus after school, he/she is to report to the school office immediately where office personnel will contact a parent/guardian. Arrangements will need to be made by the parent or guardian to pick up the child from school. Please note that a parent or guardian will be required to sign the office release log and will be asked to show a photo ID when picking up a student. A child will not be released to a person who is not listed on the enrollment card (Registration Application #705). If, as a parent or guardian, you have someone you would like to add to your child’s enrollment card, please come to the school office and update this information. If an adult comes in to pick up your child, and he/she is not listed on the child’s enrollment card, you will be contacted to verify that this particular person is authorized to take your child.

HAYDEN PARKING LOT / TRAFFIC FLOW MAP Drop-off / Pick-up Procedures: The map will be distributed at the beginning of the school year and periodically throughout the school year. The parking lot is closed to drive through drop off and pick up traffic. You may enter the parking lot, to park only, and walk your child to and from the campus. Otherwise take advantage of the park and rides located around the school (On Rome Blvd, The road between Duncan and Hayden, and the road behind the Hayden campus on the Legacy side) where students can then walk safely on sidewalks onto campus.

HAYDEN ES SCHOOL T-SHIRT Students or parents can purchase school shirts at our school office for a nominal cost. Just contact the office if would like make a purchase.

PARENTLINK ParentLink is a communication system designed to assist parents, students and teachers. It provides attendance information and school/classroom news. Parent Link is a district-wide system and is expected to be an important and essential system that each school community uses to keep informed. Attendance information is uploaded regularly. We do not upload gradebooks to Parentlink as it does not purely report proficiency levels. CCSD is working with Edline to bridge this gap. Parents must have a password to enter the system. If parents have not already received a password, one can be provided. Please contact our school office for more information about passwords and entering the system. Each password should function correctly and allow parents to sign into the system. Families with more than one child can access all of their children’s attendance information using the same password. This feature is very convenient for families with more than one child and when the siblings in a family are attending different schools due to the age of each child. Parents can access academic information from ParentLink through a cell phone or online at: https://parentlink.ccsd.net Periodically and throughout the school year a phone message may be sent to parents or guardians indicating a specific event and/or to communicate information about the school. Parents cannot opt out of these messages. We commit as a school staff to limit these cell phone or home phone electronic messages to a minimum and only when it is essential to remind parents about an important matter or when it is essential to communicate school related information to families. The Parent Link system is accessible at any time and whenever a parent feels a need to log on to the system.

UPDATING PERSONAL INFORMATION When it becomes necessary to update information on your child’s registration card, please do so immediately by coming into the office and presenting picture I.D. For the safety of your child, no changes will be made over the phone. Parents are required to notify the school office promptly if there is a change of address or phone number. Please be sure all home, employment, and emergency contact phone numbers are kept current. Correct phone numbers are essential in case of an accident or other emergency.

BIKE RIDING Students riding bikes to school are required to walk their bikes while on the school grounds. Due to the large number of students and automobiles at dismissal time, this rule will be strictly enforced. To ensure the safety of your child’s bike at school, please invest in a bike lock. All bikes are to be parked in the bike parking area. The school is not responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen bikes. Students are not to share a lock with another student (unless they are siblings). HELMETS are HIGLY RECOMMENDED. SKATEBOARDS, SCOOTERS, AND ROLLER-BLADES ARE NOT ALLOWED ON SCHOOL GROUNDS.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS Please check with your child’s classroom teacher about his/her policy BEFORE making plans or sending treats. Birthday “parties” and passing invitations are not permitted. Treats during lunchtime in the Multipurpose Room will not cause disruptions to the instructional day and are our preferred time for parties. Parents/guardians and the teacher must be present to supervise these special occasions. Home-made treats are not allowed.

COUNSELOR An elementary school counselor is specially trained to help children be better students and citizens. Counselors help promote the six qualities that the Clark County School District believes are basic to positive human conduct. They are integrity, respect, responsibility, courage, justice and empathy. The counselor is here to help with any problems students may have. Counselors help students help themselves and assist before a small problem grows and becomes a major obstacle in the student’s education or personal life. The counselor conducts guidance lessons in the classrooms, helps identify special needs of children and sees children individually and in small groups with parent permission. Counselors serve as a partner with parents and teachers in assisting students to have a quality educational experience. Parents may call the counselor for community referrals and assistance when a crisis occurs in the family. Please feel free to drop by and visit with our counselor, Ms. Carmen Garcia. She may be reached by calling the school office.

FAMILY RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT Parents or guardians have a right to review educational records kept by the district pertaining to their child, according to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). The law also allows parents or guardians to challenge any items in the records that they believe are inappropriate. To inspect these records, parents or guardians should call the school office to arrange an appointment with the principal or counselor to review the records. A copy of school district regulations pertaining to the privacy rights of parents and students is available upon request from the principal's office. The federal law, however, does allow school officials to provide what is called “directory information” without the consent of parents. Other information may be released only by parental consent or by court order. Directory information includes student’s name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, dates of attendance, and names of schools attended. Parents who do not want directory information released must file a written statement with the principal annually at the start of each school year.

FIELD TRIP POLICY The elementary child’s learning environment should be extended beyond the home and school if she/he is to expand knowledge and continue to fulfill the need for independence. Field trips reinforce curriculum objectives and give the child the opportunity to exercise research skills necessary for gaining more knowledge about life. The following procedures may be implemented as part of the field trip experience. All field trip activities require parent’s written permission.

1. The field trip experience may serve as an opportunity for introducing a unit of study. 2. Field trips may be a follow-up completing preliminary activities. 3. Field trips may take place as a culminating experience. 4. All school/district rules are to be observed during field trips. The field trip experience is not considered to be merely a pleasure or recreational trip. It is an extension of the classroom program. Parents are more than welcome to serve as chaperones or resource people. Only Don E Hayden students may attend field trips. Parents must sign a permission slip at the beginning of the year for the student to go on field trips. Appropriate behavior will be expected by all students.

EMERGENCY DRILLS State law requires that schools have regular fire and other emergency drills, such as Shelter-In-Place. Careful procedures are worked out to provide protection for students in the event of fire or other emergencies. Teachers review the procedures with students periodically. It is mandatory that all students obey and understand the procedures for such drills. Successful drills can mean lives saved in an emergency.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS In the event that the school or outside areas need to be sprayed for bugs or weeds, painted, etc., parents will be notified by letter 5 days prior so that students who may have allergies or are sensitive to certain chemicals will have early notification, and parents can plan accordingly.

ILLNESS AT SCHOOL

If a student becomes ill at school, parents, or other designated persons, will be contacted. Please do not send an ill child to school. Children returning to school from an absence due to a contagious or infectious disease should bring a note from a competent medical authority. Students should report to the health office with a pass from the teacher. The health office is the only place that can release a student due to illness. Students should not call home from a cell phone or class phone.

INJURY If a child is injured at school, every attempt will be made to contact parents. It is very important to fill out and return emergency contact/phone numbers, etc. Any changes in this information should be reported to the school immediately. (Please refer to excerpts from CCSD Regulation 5150 at back of this handbook) Health cards should also be completed. Be sure to note allergies and other special needs both for teachers and office records.

LUNCHES AND BREAKFAST A complete hot lunch with white or chocolate milk is available for all students. A monthly menu will be sent home with each child. Breakfast is available consisting of juice, milk, and a choice of a nutrition roll or cereal. TRANSFER All students attend their assigned school based on grade level and address of parent or legal guardian. When the parent or guardian moves, the student is reassigned to the appropriate school

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Children in the State of Nevada are to be taught that the American flag is to be accorded the respect befitting the loyalty and gratitude to the United States held by those who enjoy its benefits.

• The “salute to the flag” is to be a part of the daily exercises in all schools. • The flag salute is to be conducted in a dignified and reverent manner (stand, face the flag, and place

right hand over your heart). • Time should be taken to discuss what the flag and the salute represent. • Students are to be taught to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

Students and staff who have religious or conscientious objections to participating can be excused from participating, but should not be allowed to distract.

• The American flag is to be appropriately displayed in every classroom and is to be flown outside of the school on every school day.

SILENT CONTEMPLATION In accordance with Nevada Revised Statutes NRS 388.075 Period of silence. Every school district shall set aside a period at the beginning of each school day, during which all persons must be silent, for voluntary individual meditation, prayer or reflection by pupils. P.E. Game Rules

Catch It - Game consists of 8 players on the volleyball court lines (4 on each team). There are a number of ways to get

out in this game but you must first understand the basic concept of the game. The player with the ball must throw the ball and bounce it into the other team’s square. If the bounce does not land in the square he/she is out. If the ball hit’s the line that is a good throw. The players receiving the ball must catch the ball after one bounce. If a player touches the ball before it bounces then that player is out. If a player attempts to catch the ball after it bounces and drops it and the ball hit’s the ground then the player is out. Any player who touches the ball before it has bounced a second time can be called out. If no player from the receiving team catches or touches the ball then the whole team is out.

When a player is out, they go to the end of the line. A new player enters the game and goes to the team of the player who got out.

The first player in line is the referee and calls who’s out. This is very important that they watch the game and not talk to their friends. Players do not argue with the referee. If they don’t like the way a referee is calling a game they can always go to the other game. Only the teacher can overrule a call.

Tetherball - Game always begins with rock, paper, scissors (RPS) to determine who chooses ball or side. If the winner

of RPS chooses ball then the other player gets to choose their side. The player hitting the ball has determined which way they’re going when they hit the ball. They can announce it, but it is not required.

Same rules apply to the referee in tetherball as to catch it.

There are several penalties that can cause a player to lose. 1. If you touch the string after the opening hit, you’re out. 2. If you touch the metal pole, you’re out. 3. If you walk into the other players half circle, you’re out. 4. If you catch the ball, you’re out. 5. If you kick the ball, you’re out. 6. If you push the ball along instead of strike it, you’re out. 7. There are other rules that students may create but they are not part of the game such as calling for another player to assist you, or popcorn in which the player taps the ball in the air with their fingers or palms several times before hitting it.

The winner of the game is the one who completely tethers the ball around the pole.

Kickball - To start, players must have a batting order and no cutting is allowed. If a player comes to the game

later they must enter at the end of the batting order and of course they will ultimately change the order of the original group.

To get a player out you must force them out at a base by touching the base they are attempting to reach. Baseball rules are in place when trying to force runners out. This can be confusing for all students who have never played baseball. This is explained in great detail to students during P.E. and we spend a lot of time explaining this concept but it is a hard concept for them to understand.

The other way a player can get someone out is by touching them with the ball. They are not allowed to throw the ball at players. The last way to get a player out is by catching the ball from the air that has never bounced.

Pitchers must make an honest attempt at rolling the ball so the player can kick it. It is also the responsibility of the kicker to explain to the pitcher how they would like the pitch.

29

After 3 outs the teams switch sides. When the team comes up to kick again the player who was next up should be kicking while the last player to kick should be last in line and the batting order should stay consistent with how it was set up in the beginning.

4 square - There are 4 players each in a box. The rest of the players are in line waiting their turn. The same

referee rules apply to 4 square as used in catch it. The president always starts with the ball and must serve the ball to any of the 3 players by bouncing it first and then hitting the ball to one of the squares. The next player has to let the ball bounce in his/her square before contacting the ball. You’re out if you touch the ball without letting it bounce.

If the ball bounces on a line then the player who bounced it is out. You cannot catch the ball. You cannot throw the ball but you can push it along to another square. If a player is out, all players shift up a level accordingly. So If the President is knocked out of the game, the 3 players still in the game move up a level and the new player enters at the lowest level of the game.
