UNCW Women’s Soccer Head Coach Paul Cairney

The UNCW wom-en’s soccer program continues its rise to na-tional prominence under the leadership of former collegiate standout and veteran coach Paul Cairney. Now in his 17th season as head coach, Cairney has been with the women’s program since its inception in 1994. He served as as-

sociate head coach with the team for two years be-fore taking over the reins of the program in 1996.

A four-year letterman with the UNCW men’s team, Cairney has amassed 153 career victories and posted a winning record in seven of the last 10 seasons as he has developed the Seahawks into one of the CAA’s top clubs, His teams have quali-fi ed for four of the last six CAA Women’s Soccer Championships, one of only three programs in the league to accomplish the feat.

A record six Seahawks - Linsday Henry, Amanda Holmes, Caitlin Hunter, Megan Novak, Meagan Simeone and Stephanie Rose - earned All-CAA honors in 2010 as the Seahawks recorded nine or more victories for the 12th time in Cariney’s 16 sea-sons at the helm and posted a winning record in league play for the fi fth straight season.

The 2009 campaign saw Cairney guide UNCW to its fi rst CAA Tournament championship and fi rst NCAA Tournament appearance as the Seahawks edged Hofstra with a 2-1 overtime victory in the semifi nals before knocking off James Madison, 1-0, in the tournament championship.

UNCW fi nished that season with a 13-8-1 overall record as it equaled the program’s single-season mark for victories for the second time in four cam-paigns. Cairney’s squad was well recognized for its success as Megan Novak and Stephanie Rose were Second-Team All-CAA selections and Ashley Myers was a Third-Team All-CAA pick. Rose and fellow newcomer Lindsay Henry were also named to the CAA All-Rookie Team while Novak garnered additional accolades as she was made an All-Re-gion selection by the National Soccer Coaches As-sociation of America.

Cairney’s team posted its fi rst winning season in 1997 with an 11-9-1 mark, and then pulled off an up-set of No. 1 Old Dominion in the 1998 CAA Tourna-ment en route to a 10-10-1 record. The Seahawks reached the CAA semifi nals again in 1999 before bowing to eventual champion William & Mary.

In 2004, UNCW opened the season with nine straight wins, outscoring opponents, 33-9. Senior midfi elder Caroline Renkin was named Second-Team All-CAA and Cauble was selected to the All-Rookie squad. The Seahawks also achieved a milestone for the program when they were ranked in the Top 10 of the Southeast Region by Soccer Buzz. Cauble then became the program’s fi rst First-Team All-CAA selection in 2005.

The 2006-07 squad enjoyed one of the best sea-sons in program history as the Seahawks fi nished with a 13-6-0 ledger and posted a second-place fi nish in the conference at 8-3-0. Cairney shared CAA Coach-of-the-Year honors after helping the Seahawks close out the year ranked 47th among NCAA Division I schools in RPI.

Cairney wasn’t the only Seahawk to be rewarded that season. Junior midfi elder Jenny Cauble and sophomore striker Kelly Renkin each made First-Team All-CAA while junior forward Ashley Church garnered Second-Team honors and freshman goalkeeper Jamie Balzarini collected All-Rookie Team laurels.

The 2008 squad matched the program record for CAA victories in a season with an 8-3 ledger and the Seahawks matched their highest fi nish in the regular-season standings with a tie for second. The team also established a new mark for shutouts in a season with nine. For his efforts, Cairney was named CAA Coach-of-the-Year for the second time in three seasons, becoming one of just fi ve manag-ers in league history to earn the distinction on more than one occasion.

Four Seahawks were also acknowledged for their outstanding play as senior Kelly Renkin be-came the fi rst player in program history to earn First-Team All-CAA honors three times in her ca-reer and the second to be named All-CAA in each of her four seasons. Freshman Erin Pardini was a Second-Team All-CAA selection and senior Brittany Croce earned Third-Team All-CAA distinction. Par-dini and fellow freshman Kelly Dodd were named to the CAA All-Rookie Team while Pardini became the fi rst Freshman All-American in program history when she earned the honor from Soccer Buzz On-line Magazine.

Cairney was a two-time All-Conference per-former in the backfi eld during his playing career. He served as team captain for three seasons from 1991-93 and led the team in scoring as a junior.

A USSF “A” Licensed coach, Cairney has devel-oped his coaching talents by working at numerous soccer camps and workshops over the last few years. Cairney, who is also a Scottish Football As-sociation licensed coach, was a guest clinician at

the NCAA Youth Education through Sports (YES) clinic held in conjunction with the 2003 Women’s Soccer College Cup in Cary, N.C.

Cairney recently joined the NCYSA (North Carolina Youth Soccer Association) coaching education staff. He helps teach state level coaching courses and serves as a head coach for the North Carolina ODP (Olympic Development Program). He is also a NSCAA Premier Coaching Diploma recipient.

As a student at UNCW, Cairney excelled in the class-room. He earned several academic honors, including Co-SIDA/GTE Academic All-American in 1993, the Phi Delta Kappa Outstanding Young Educator award, Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society, the Chancellor’s Cup for Academic and Athletic Excellence and the Alumni Achievement Award for Academic Excellence. He graduated with the highest grade point average of UNCW’s Class of ‘93.

“I truly believe that the student in ‘student-athlete’ comes fi rst,” Cairney says. “Success in the classroom, unlike suc-cess on the soccer fi eld, is something that my players will take with them when they graduate. Therefore, it is impor-tant that academics are a priority from day one through graduation.”

Cairney’s teams have been recognized for their academic achievements by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), receiving the College Team Academic Award in 11 of the last 12 seasons, including each of the previous nine campaigns. The 2002 and 2008 squads were honored with an NSCAA Ethics award for its disciplined style of play. “We strive to be the best in the classroom and on the fi eld,” Cairney says, “and we structure our program to achieve these goals.”

Cairney’s program picked up an additional honor in 2004 when Renkin was named a fi nalist for the prestigious John Wooden Trophy by Athletes For A Better World. Cairney and Renkin traveled to Los Angeles, Calif., for a special ceremony to recognize several of the nation’s top student-athletes.

Cairney completed his Master’s Degree in English from UNCW in 1995, and received a postgraduate scholarship provided by the CAA and Richfood, Inc.

Paul and his wife, the former Donalda Kirsop, have three children, Cameron (15), Tess (12) and Lily (9).

UNCW Women’s Soccer Assistant Coach Melissa Barnes

Melissa Barnes, a four-year starter at goalkeeper and mem-ber of two NCAA Tournament teams at Furman, is in her fi fth sea-son as an assistant women’s soccer coach at UNCW. She assists veteran head coach Paul Cairney in all facets of the program.

Barnes has played a key role in helping UNCW reach new heights during her time with the program. In 2008, she tutored the Seahawks keepers on their way to recording a program-record nine shutouts as UNCW matched its record for CAA victories in a season and equaled their highest fi nish in the regular-season standings with a tie for second.

The 2009 season saw the Seahawks netminders combine for eight shutouts as UNCW matched its single-season mark for victories, capturing its fi rst CAA Tournament championship and made its fi rst NCAA Tournament appearance.

During the 2010 campaign, UNCW’s keepers teammed up to record fi ve shutouts and Caitlin Hunter became the fi rst goaltender to earn All-CAA honors as she was a Third-Team All-CAA selection.

“Melissa is an invaluable part of our success,” said Cairney. “Her experience as a goalkeeper has helped our keepers get better and her knowledge of the game is excel-lent. She has a great presence as an on-fi eld coach and she has taken great steps to enhance our game analysis and this has helped our team immensely. Her infectious en-thusiasm and magnetic personality have been true assets to our program.”

Barnes joined the Seahawks after having served as an assistant coach for three sea-sons at her alma mater, helping guide the Lady Paladins to a 41-22-4 overall record and 20-6-4 Southern Conference mark. She played a key role in helping the program claim the 2007 Southern Conference Tournament Crown and make its fi fth appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

A native of Prospect, Ky., Barnes starred in goal for the Paladins from 1998-2002 and helped Furman compile a 66-21-1 record in that span. The three-time All-Southern Con-ference selection posted the 10th best goals against average in the nation (.067) in 1999 and was named team MVP in 2000.

Barnes began her coaching career as head varsity girls’ coach at Spartanburg Day School in 2002 and 2003 before joining the University of South Dakota coaching staff in 2004, helping USD to a school best 15-9 mark and NCAA Tournament appearance. A member of the Region III Olympic Development Program’s goal-keeping staff since 2005, Barnes also worked with the Lady Paladin program as a volunteer assistant during the 2002 campaign.

UNCW Women’s Soccer 2009 CAA Champions

Led by the heroics of Most Outstanding Player Erin Pardini, the UNCW women’s soccer team captured its fi rst conference championship in program history at the 2009 CAA Women’s Soccer Champion-ship, hosted by Northeastern University in Brookline, Mass. Serving as the No. 3 seed for the four-team event, the Seahawks saw their semifi nal match against No. 2 seed Hofstra go to

overtime after both teams got on the board in the open-ing 30 minutes. Midway through the fi rst overtime session, Pardini created separation from the Hofstra defense on the left side and sent a shot from near the endline that beat the Pride keeper and crossed the goal line just in-side the right post for the 2-1 victory. The overtime triumph sent the Seahawks to their fi rst championship game appearance, where they would face No. 4 seed James Madison, who dispatched host and top-seed Northeastern, 4-1, in the other semifi nal. With the championship game scoreless in the 80th minute, Pardini once again rose to the occasion, con-verting a penalty kick opportunity for the game’s only

tally. Seahawks keeper Caitlin Hutner kept the Dukes at bay all af-ternoon, making fi ve saves to earn the shutout. For their efforts, Pardini and Hunter were named to the All-Tournament Team along with UNCW teammates Brittany Croce and Lindsay Henry. The victory also gave the Seahawks their fi rst NCAA Tournament appearance, garner-ing the league’s automatic bid into the 64-team fi eld by winning the confer-ence championship. UNCW was the named the No. 3 seed in the Chapel Hill Regional, falling to Southeastern Conference opponent Georgia in its fi rst-round matchup.
