Dear NLA Community,

Thank you for opening this year’s edition of the New Life Academy Annual Report. As you will see, it has truly been an exciting and historic year here at NLA. I hope you enjoy reading about the many accomplishments of our students and staff and see how God continues to richly bless us.

For me, summer is often a time of reflection on the past year and a chance to envision the future. While recently visiting my folks in Kansas, I began to think about my father’s legacy as a farmer and as a follower of Christ (I was even sitting on the tractor!). Although he was very involved in his church, the majority of his fifty-nine years of vocation were not spent in formal ministry but in the fields.

One of my father’s core beliefs was that it was critical, in order to be a good farmer, to plow straight. That philosophy permeated almost all my work with him. I can almost hear him saying, “Do a good job.” “Don’t short change anything.” “Your work is a reflection of you and of the God we serve.”

Living out the philosophy was not and is not always easy. It requires a tremendous amount of faith. Faith that rain will come, that putting almost all your resources into a job well done will be blessed and bear fruit, knowing that there are no guarantees.

How does this impact our mission at NLA to educate and energize each student to impact their world for Jesus Christ and to reach their full potential in scholarship, leadership, and service out of love for God and one another?

ScholarshipPart of plowing straight is to make sure we offer an excellent educational experience. Our faculty works diligently on assessing learning strategies, students, and updating curriculum to match student needs. Our students continue to perform well on standardized assessments as we continue to cultivate a culture of continuous improvement.

LeadershipOur students demonstrated leadership throughout the year in fine arts, athletics, academics, and service. This year our faculty engaged in mentorship training to encourage students to confidently become who God is calling them to be.

ServiceOur students continue to amaze me with their heart of service. Whether it is serving on the chapel band, through team service projects, raising funds for water wells in Uganda, or helping people in their community, our students stand out in this area. Our design, as a Christ-centered community, is to continue to provide

opportunities for service and to keep Christ as the motivation and object of that service.

It is my prayer that our students, whether in formal ministry or in professional vocation, would be followers of Christ and men and women that plow straight. I pray that they would plow straight in their families and in their churches. I pray that their faith would be a constant, transforming them and those around them. And finally, as articulated in our mission, I pray that they would live out of a genuine love for Christ.

I am very thankful for the fruit that I see and trust that you will be encouraged by seeing a glimpse of that fruit in the following pages of this annual report. I want to thank you for your prayers, support, and partnership as we continue striving to “plow straight.”

Blessings,

Letter from Chair of the Governing Council

3

Dear Families and Friends,

This has been an exciting year for the New Life community and the Governing Council. It has been an honor to serve as Chair of this dedicated group of talented individuals.

The work of the 2012-13 Council has been noteworthy.

We partnered with New Life Church to add a new addition to the building and start remodeling many areas of the campus. We launched the Unlock the Potential Building Campaign and, together with the church, have raised more than $5,000,000 toward our $6,000,000 goal. Academy Trustees have brought much time, talent, and treasure to the effort. They have provided financial leadership by starting the campaign off with combined commitments of more than $1,090,000 to the project. I am truly grateful for their impact and support.

Our second major accomplishment was the first year of successful completion of SEED 2015: our three-year strategic plan. It is the role of the Governing Council to be visionary and plan for the future, so we created this plan as a blueprint for the years to come. This comprehensive plan lays the groundwork for a stronger New Life Academy that continues to embrace academic improvement, steadfast governance, and financial stability. We are excited for what the future holds for the school and for your child.

As I step down from my role as Chair, I want to thank New Life Academy for the opportunity to be a small part of a very strong community. Steve Tourek will be our new Chair and brings decades of valuable experience and success to his new role. We are grateful for his volunteer commitment.

Thank you to New Life Church, whose prayerful visionary leadership started New Life Academy more than thirty-six years ago. We are still benefiting today from their commitment to Christian education. Thank you to all the parents who entrust their children to us. Thank you to our alumnae, donors, and the community at large for generously supporting our mission.

Thank you to our Head of School, faculty, and staff for taking so seriously the importance of educating our children and my grandchildren in a Christ-centered environment. Thank you to all the Academy Trustees for giving so much of yourselves: your time, your energy, your intellect, and your financial support. You truly make the difference.

Gratefully,

Keith Freeburg | 2012-13 Chair of the Governing Council Parent of Alumni and Grandparent

Building CampaignAfter much prayer and the identification of the facility as a critical aspect in the school’s Strategic Plan, SEED 2015, the Governing Council and the Academy’s administration, along with New Life Church’s leadership, decided to move forward with a larger vision that would meet the needs of our whole community.

Our success over the last thirty-six years has only been possible through God’s grace and the support of parents willing to make the necessary sacrifices to send their children to New Life Academy. Without these willing donors, volunteers, families, and the surrounding community, New Life Church and Academy would not be where it is today.

For years, New Life Church has been preparing to build a facility to further encourage its youth, create programs that stir hearts for Christ Jesus, and provide a gathering space for church worship and ministry.

After much prayer and the identification of the facility as a critical aspect in the school’s Strategic Plan, SEED 2015, the Governing Council and the Academy’s administration, along with New Life Church’s leadership, decided to move forward with a larger vision that would meet the needs of our whole community.

Incremental building improvements are no longer enough. It is time to secure the long-term future of the school. We must make sure

that New Life Academy continues to grow. If we are not moving forward, we will certainly fall behind. The Academy and its community must make investments to sustain and exceed our current standards. It is critical that every aspect of the school and grounds reflects the superior academics and the character taught inside the walls.

“I believe we have the best educational experience to offer at New Life Academy. But sometimes the space limitations that you have force you to make an extraordinary effort to overcome those challenges. This project creates a much better educational environment: one that provides greater opportunity, more flexibility, and more

space that will enable us to really expand our offerings.”

Steve Tourek 2013-14 Chair Governing Council Parent of Alumni and Current Parent

Maintaining the status quo is not acceptable. It is not consistent with our mission or the high expectations we place on ourselves. We must make every effort to reach more students and impact their lives through the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Because of this, the Unlock the Potential Building Campaign was born. What was going to be an add-on to the west side of the building has become a unifying structure that will bring our campus and community together. By moving the project to our front entrance, new doors will literally be opened to create a facility that not only optimizes the delivery of a 21st-century education but will now reflect the academic excellence, leadership, and service that is being constructed within each student.

To complete this historical project, a $6 million dollar campaign was launched. Our

It is time for New Life Academy to plant the seeds for its future: how will we ensure a future of educating generations of Christian youth? Before embarking on the process, we prayed for God’s wisdom and guidance. He blessed us by sending us good counselors who care passionately about the school, our students and our mission. The team was comprised of several Governing Council members as well as administration. The final work was reviewed and organized by Gary Floss, a nationally recognized quality assurance and continuous improvement expert.

The team worked diligently for several months to develop a three-part plan that focuses on continuing to provide high-quality academics in an environment that transforms student lives for Christ. The plan also begins to focus our efforts on building a strong foundation for a thriving and sustainable future for the school.

Part I expands and strengthens our spiritual development programs and culture. Part II introduces a new concept in teaching and learning that will positively impact our academic excellence and better prepare students for the life in the 21st century. Part III includes programs to provide professional support for our dedicated, hardworking teachers.

The planning committee also identified four critical and foundation-building areas: facility, financial planning, philanthropic support, and enrollment growth.

It is our mission to touch and transform as many young lives for Jesus Christ as possible. Great stewardship, smart planning, and managed growth are the keys to delivering our mission today and for generations to come.

Financial Planning, Philanthropy & Growth

Building CampaignAfter much prayer and the identification of the facility as a critical aspect in the school’s Strategic Plan, SEED 2015, the Governing Council and the Academy’s administration, along with New Life Church’s leadership, decided to move forward with a larger vision that would meet the needs of our whole community.

5

goal, while bold for such a small community, is clearly within our grasp. Together with the Church, the Academy has raised more than $5,100,000 for the effort.

However, at this point in time, we have not yet raised enough to complete all the projects. The Church and Academy has a critical, unfunded project yet to complete: We still have more than$1,000,000 left to raise.

The time for unlocking our students’ potential is now. Let’s embrace this unprecedented opportunity that God has offered to us. By expanding and renovating our school, we will dramatically and positively impact our ability to serve you, your children, and our growing community.

BUILDING BENEFITS TO ACADEMY STUDENTS AND FAMILIES

• New Addition with a dramatic new entrance and gathering space, youth ministry space for worship and youth groups, fireplace and comfortable seating, new bathrooms and even a coffee cafe So that we can better develop the mind, body, and soul

And increase positive social interactions and collaboration • Three (3) secondary classrooms and two (2) Early Education classrooms So that we can serve more students for Jesus Christ • Newly renovated and expanded student cafeteria and commons area So that students can eat together in increased community without tension and urgency and have time to rejuvenate and foster enduring friendships • Renovation of a 36-year-old gymnasium and Jr. High locker rooms So that student athletes can better compete and engage in sports with each other • Sustained Annual Giving and student program enhancement during the campaign So that the programs and resources that support our students, staff, teachers, and the current facility can continue operating at a level of excellence

WHY NOW?

The Academy has grown to 700 students this year and projections are that of 800 students by 2016. We are in dire need of the additional space to accommodate the demand for Christian

Education in and around Woodbury. Waiting lists for the current year are existent in seven grades, and the 2014-2015 waiting lists are already forming.

Our mission compels us to serve all students who want a Christian education.

Overview of SEED 2015

Part I Spiritual

Development:

Attain an exceptional level of excellence in more consistently and uniformly creating an educational environment which both teaches and reflects Christian values and encourages students in their spiritual life to become genuine Christ-followers.

Part II Academic Excellence:

Consistently deliver an exceptional educational experience that is competitive with the local public and private schools in terms of measurable academic achievement in core areas. The Academy’s co-curricular programs will both encourage participation and consistently achieve competitive performance levels.

Part III Professional

Development:

Make professional development a priority and will support a uniformly high standard of pedagogy among Faculty which models and encourages excellence in teaching that is student-focused.

Facility Enhance, improve, optimize, and maintain the current facility to fully support the exceptional spiritual and educational learning experience envisioned. We will create strategic partnerships with others in order to secure reliable access to fields, facilities (and programmatic resources) which are lacking.

Finance Implement a disciplined financial model designed to ensure long-term institutional viability characterized by sufficient tuition and fee revenue to cover the cost of education per student, appropriate reserves relative to the annual budget, and a program of tuition assistance that strikes an appropriate balance between Mission and Vision on the one hand, and sustainability on the other.

Philanthropy Create a more vibrant and impactful culture of giving in order to ensure that the Academy’s facility, programs, technological capabilities, and tuition assistance program are sufficient to fully support its Mission and Vision.

GrowthIncrease the Academy’s enrollment in the current facility to 800 students with a waiting pool in response to the consistent and continuously improving delivery of an exceptional spiritual and educational learning experience.

continuous growth for teachers, as well as students.

One goal within the Professional Learning Communities at NLA has been to focus on formative assessment and feedback. NLA is integrating technology and providing opportunities to meet the learning styles of the many different learners on the team. Reading articles, viewing technology, discussing ideas, and creating plans are all a part of the professional development process.

Accreditation

NLA has been awarded continuing accreditation with the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA-CASI). This action was taken at the AdvancEd Accreditation Commission meeting held on June 22, 2013. Five standards that drove the accreditation process include:

• Standard 1: Purpose and Direction • Standard 2: Governance and Leadership • Standard 3: Teaching and Assessing for Learning • Standard 4: Resources and Support Systems • Standard 5: Using Results for Continuous Improvement

According to the AdvancEd review community, NLA falls in line with these standards and best practices. They validated and encouraged NLA to further develop our ability to record and manage data in order to make strategic decisions that are based on numbers. As an accredited institution, NLA is part of a network of over 32,000 schools and systems in over 71 countries that are committed to continuous quality education.

sDifferentiated Learning

Teachers at NLA work hard to differentiate their instruction to meet the needs of all students and incorporate technology as a learning vehicle and supportive tool. One-to-one learning helps each student reach his or her full potential in a disciplined and measurable way.

Cade Lambert, Head of School, says “Map testing is a vital comprehensive assessment tool that measures students’ holistic growth. We want to understand our students’ needs and then develop them through individualized instruction.”

This process allows NLA teachers to maximize the God-given differentiated gifts of each student so he or she can develop them to impact his or her world for Jesus Christ.

Technology Advancements

Staying current and technologically advanced is a priority to NLA. Due to generous gift donations given by parents and grandparents in the NLA community, all students at NLA have access to 75 iPad Minis, 50 Macbook Airs, and 150 Chromebooks. This technology cache creates a dynamic and advanced educational environment that supports our commitment to the SEED 2015 Strategic Plan.

New Life Academy’s early childhood programs are also integrating iPad technology into their curriculum. Jennifer Greener, a NLA pre-kindergarten and 3’s preschool teacher said, “We’re living in a fast and rapidly changing world of technology, and it’s important for our students in the early childhood programs to develop iPad skills.”

Greener said that by integrating the iPad technology into the early childhood curriculum, it assists in building up the students’ educational foundation. By using age-appropriate applications with specific intentions and combining them with other traditional early childhood classroom activities and materials, Greener said that using the iPads tends to help accelerate students ahead of their peers who are not using this technology. “Applications are learning-based, such as using the sounds certain animals or letters make, teaching pre-reading skills, and even fun counting games; all the while, they’re learning and using the tools of technology and learning how to navigate their way around on the iPad.”

Professional Development

NLA has Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) that meet bimonthly to learn, share ideas, and extend the professional learning to ensure

athleticsAs the largest non-denominational Christian school in the east metro, NLA has established highly competitive athletic programs. “When you play sports, you are not just playing for New Life Academy. You are playing for Christ” says Chloe an 11th grade varsity soccer and softball player. NLA places high value on using athletics as an avenue to build character and produce godly leaders. Jake, a 10th grade athlete at NLA adds, “I have developed as a person and in my faith because the coaches make it a priority to mentor athletes and encourage us to become godly men and women.”

New Life Academy’s mission is to educate and energize each student to impact their world for Jesus Christ and to reach their full

potential in scholarship, leadership, and service out of love for God and one another. This mission is built into the ethos of NLA athletics.

“Playing sports at NLA allows me to use all my leadership skills that I have been blessed with. Playing alongside other Christian athletes has challenged me to be a role model for Jesus Christ because we keep each other accountable. The way we play with great sportsmanship demonstrates Christ’s love on and off the field,” says Sam a 10th grade three-sport athlete. Praying before and after games is a common practice for many teams at NLA. This unity between athletes creates a bond that often forms lifelong friendships.

Teams not only strive to model Christ while competing, but they also give back to their community through team-building activities and service projects. John, a 10th grade baseball and basketball player says one of his favorite memories as an athlete was to serve at Feed My Starving Children alongside his teammates. Playing competitive sports at NLA is not just about the game; it’s about character transformation.

NLA is committed to growth and delivery of excellence and continuous improvement in the competitive athletic programs. Athlete Director, Curt Wetsel, says 68% of NLA students participated in sports in the 2012-2013 school year.

arts

“Something unique about NLA is that students have the opportunity to take private lessons during the school day. It’s not just about competition. It’s about spiritual growth and creating a well-rounded experience – maybe a choral competition one day and a worship service the next. Music is a reflection back to God and how beautiful and creative He is.” –Mrs. Krizek, Elementary Music & Junior High Choir Director

The Fine Arts department helps nurture and cultivate the talents and desires God has given many of our students. As each grade progresses, students flourish in the pursuit of creative expression and are exposed to greater discipline and challenging curriculum. Opportunities are presented that will allow each student to build a foundation in the arts, and if desired, ultimately achieve excellence in those areas that will lead a student beyond their primary education.

Music, theatre, and visual arts are an integral part of the educational experience at New Life Academy. Serving a critical role in developing the whole person, NLA students are exposed to basic techniques and theory of the arts from the day their journey begins in Preschool.

Spotlight on “Hello Dolly!”“Hello, Dolly!” received Outstanding Awards in overall production and performance in the Hennepin Theatre Trust’s Spotlight Musical Theatre program. Six students were also recognized for their performances in leading roles: Tom Hunt, Amanda Heidmann, Michelle Cremers, Noah Eigenfeld, Miranda Lockner, and Erik Holmquist.

Serving out of love for God and one another.

“My goal is to help students develop a clear understanding of who they are in their relationship with Jesus Christ. Understanding this will give them a strong foundation and a constant truth that will guide them throughout their lives.” -Lynn Atkinson, Principal, Secondary School

“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28

Service“I’ve learned that we are to be disciples of Christ,” says Mackenzie Jensen, who attended NLA for 13 years and graduated in June 2013. “We’re supposed to represent Jesus and be His hands and feet.”

And many have noticed Mackenzie’s differences. During her senior year, as Project Serve Coordinator, she organized service outings—everything from raking leaves for the elderly in St. Paul to passing out coats to the homeless at the Dorothy Day Center—giving NLA’s high school students the chance to experience the joy that comes with serving others. Mackenzie recently traveled to Costa Rica to teach Vacation Bible School to kids and minister to them through fun activities and service.

“Her initiative and passion to serve is a great example of what NLA hopes for all of its students,” says Campus Pastor Lawrence Simmons. “We really try to foster an environment in which students take the lead on outreach and service. It helps them mature and grow into their knowledge of God and His Plan. And once they understand the bigger picture, they start to see how they fit and what they can do.”

Along with serving others, NLA’s weekly student-led chapel, regular prayer, and strong, bible-based curriculum taught by committed teachers help students solidify the mission for themselves as Jesus’ hands and feet. And this mission takes them far beyond NLA’s walls—alumni across

the world are infusing their careers and ministries with faith.

“It’s one of the best parts of working at NLA,” says Lawrence. “You form relationships with men and women that last through the years, long after graduation. You see them come to that deeper understanding of what it means to walk with Christ.”

Headed to the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire, Mackenzie plans to major in speech pathology and says she intends to get involved with Campus Crusade for Christ and remain devoted to serving: “I want to continue to help others and bring the love of Jesus to them.”

Throughout the school’s history, New Life Academy has had a growing culture of philanthropy, giving, and volunteering. This culture continues to allow our school to flourish and become one of the top non-denominational Pre-K through 12th grade Christian schools in the metro. Our Annual Giving program is supported each year by parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, and corporations. The culture of giving here at NLA is healthy, generous, and broad-reaching. Last year more than 576 donors contributed more than $769,000 to our annual campaign. That is an impressive number of supporters and dollars for a community our size. Clearly, the mission of Christian Education is dear to many—and we see the fruit of it in the lives of our students every day.

The school is also supported by hundreds of volunteers who give selflessly of their time and talent each year. These are both mainstays of the school’s efforts and have made all the difference in distinguishing our school.

Did you know that each year, New Life Academy’s Tuition Assistance program funds 25% of all students and 23% of all families at the Academy? Our goal is also to provide a high-quality, affordable, Christ-centered education to as many students as possible.

In order to keep providing all families with access to the Academy, we must increase our ability to offer Tuition Assistance to as many students as possible. Each year some students and families are not able to attend due to the lack of available funds.

More than $750,000 is allocated toward

Tuition Assistance each year, and only 10% of that is funded through Annual Giving. As families and supporters of NLA, we have an opportunity to fund an even larger portion and free up more dollars to be used for educational programs, student development, and a host of other things that impact your child’s schooling.

As you know, one of the biggest barriers parents face is the cost of tuition. Year after year, our costs increase. However, fortunately, our Annual Giving campaign is attracting more willing donors each year.

But, this only covers a portion of the demand placed on our financial resources

By giving to the Tuition Assistance Fund, you can help provide a student with the opportunity to energize his or her heart and mind in a Christ-centered environment, to be involved in a close community, and to be able to learn in a setting filled with teachers who care.

Give today, and open the door for another student to join the New Life Academy family.

We are deeply grateful for the time and talent people choose to invest into NLA students. A special thanks to theses hardworking council and committee volunteers.

Become Blessed by Blessing Others

The mission of the Parent School Partnership (PSP) group is to support NLA and its mission by fostering input, communication, and encouragement among faculty, staff, administration, parents and students in all aspects of educational and spiritual development. The PSP group includes every parent/guardian of a current New Life Academy student.

PSP is aimed at getting parents involved and making the school more unified. The evidence is overwhelming: students who have highly involved families get higher grades and have fewer discipline problems. We encourage each family to strive to volunteer in some way at least 5 hours per school year.

“Will you join us? Come serve the Lord and our students by volunteering! It is our hope that we can partner together with you to carry out the Lord’s will here at New Life Academy. We encourage each family to volunteer in some way as much as your schedule allows. Even contributing five hours per school year can make a tremendous impact on NLA and our children. We believe in placing volunteers where God has gifted them, and where their heart leads them.” –Michelle Schumacher, President of Parent School Partnership (PSP)

Ways to Get Involved

There are several ways to become involved at New Life Academy. Opportunities exist throughout all facets of school operations. A few specific PSP volunteer opportunities include:

• New Family Welcome Program • Room Parent Program • Prayer for Teachers, Staff & Students • Teacher and Staff Appreciation Events • Jump Start Playdates & Family Picnics

Why Get Involved?

• Promote the mission of New Life Academy. • Raise funds to enrich New Life Academy school curriculum. • Provide fellowship opportunities for families. • Recognize faculty and staff effort.

New Life Academy, along with the PSP, would love to see every family involved to foster fellowship and build school community at New Life Academy!

Parent School Parntership (PSP)

“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. –John 13:13-17

2013 Teachers of the Year

14 17

“Effective Christian education is not simply adding chapel and Bible class to a traditional academic curriculum. Rather, its mission is to forge a new mind—a transformation that begins through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and is then nurtured and developed by deliberate and strategic integration of Biblical truth into every curricular area.”

Ken Smitherson President, Association of Christian Schools International

To honor its many outstanding and committed

teachers, New Life Academy established The Eagle

Award ten years ago. Annually, two individuals are

selected by their fellow teachers and are recognized by

the NLA community for going above and beyond

in educating and caring for their students.

The 2013 awards go to Mimi Broderick (elementary)

and Carole Brumley (secondary).Mimi Broderick

With a degree in elementary education from the University of Minnesota, Mimi Broderick taught students for over thirty-six years. After starting at a public school, she moved to Malaysia to teach missionary children and then came to NLA where she served for the past seventeen years until her retirement in June 2013.

“Every day was different with new challenges,” says Mimi, who taught 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades, as well as math and science for 7th and 8th grades during her time at NLA. “Working with children can be very rewarding as you see them grow in many different ways.” And one of those ways was spiritually. Of teaching at NLA, she says she most appreciated having the opportunity to share and watch God work in their lives.

“Years ago, one of my students asked me to meet with him after school so that he could pray to become a child of God,” she recalls. “Then the very next day, he brought his younger brother to my classroom so that he could do the same!”

Although NLA staff and students will miss Mimi, her faith and dedication have made a lasting impact.

Her plans for retirement? She says that golfing, spending time at her family’s cabin in Wisconsin, reading, cooking, gardening, walking, biking, volunteering, and maybe even a part-time job are among her future endeavors.

Carole Brumley

“We are given some pretty specific instructions in the Bible on how to communicate with each other, and theatre is just another form of communication,” says Carole Brumley, who has been teaching drama and Bible at New Life Academy for 10 years. For her, theatre and faith go hand in hand, and she jumps at the opportunity to not only teach her students theatre basics—stage presence, diction, projection, concentration, etc.—but to also analyze what’s being said to the audience in light of scripture.

“I use the example of 1 Corinthians—the church is like a body. The Body is perfectly designed by God to work together, each through his or her own gifting for His purpose,” she explains. “In so doing, each individual part is fulfilled and finds peace, and in community, great things are accomplished. It’s a beautiful picture.”

And, indeed, great things were accomplished last year. Her students’ production of “Hello, Dolly!” received Outstanding Awards in overall production and performance in the Hennepin Theatre Trust’s Spotlight Musical Theatre program. Four students were also recognized for their performances in leading roles.

Carole is already gearing up for NLA’s 2013-2014 production of “Fiddler on the Roof,” which she says is rich with character development, historical merit, and the potential to learn about our Jewish heritage.

Class of 1985

Jeffrey Stone (‘85)Jeffrey Stone is the founder and CEO of Navy Island Inc. He explains, “We are a manufacturer of architectural wood products. We have two plants in West St. Paul: one that manufactures architectural doors, frames, and windows and another plant that manufacturers acoustical wall and ceiling panels.”

Jeff started his company during his sophomore year of high school at New Life Academy. He began by making and restoring antique furniture in his father’s garage, and many of his first employees were friends from NLA. Jeff says, “Over the years, the company grew and diversified into other types of wood products. After my two younger brothers, Chad (‘87) and Ben (‘93), graduated from New Life, they eventually joined me in the company and are still with the company today. Chad is vice president of engineering, and Ben is our marketing manager.”

In regard to NLA, Jeff explains that the school established a strong faith and strong self-confidence within him. “On average, the teachers at New Life were more concerned with their students’ spiritual and personal development than at many other institutions. Life is so volatile during the teenage years, and while New Life was no guarantee of future success, it significantly improved the odds that I would be more established in my faith and could handle the risks and pressures of starting and running a business.”

Jeff values the friendships he had with many of the students at NLA as well as the opportunities he had to play multiple sports while he attended the school. He says, “Even though I was just a mediocre athlete, I got a lot more play time than I would have if I would’ve had to compete at a much larger school. We were still very competitive in our division, but I sure had a lot of fun running around a field or a court.”

He says that his mother, Karen, was one of his favorite teachers at NLA. But second to her, he says, “…Without question, Paul Stein was the coolest teacher I had. Nothing could rile him, and because he commanded such respect, no one even tried. He was a great communicator, had a great sense of humor, he was patient, smart, a sharp dresser, and had nice shoes.” Now, Jeff and his wife, Kathy live in Woodbury, MN and have four children: Macayla, Julia, Kendra, and Jeffrey. Three of their kids are currently at New Life Academy, and Macayla, who recently graduated from NLA in 2012, is currently attending the University of Northwestern – St. Paul.

Some of their favorite activities include traveling the country in their RV during the summer months and vacationing in Florida and Arizona during the winter. Jeff is also an avid golfer (“…Not a good one,” he says, “I just do it a lot…”), and he enjoys windsurfing and skiing as well.

New Life Academy hopes to foster an enduring relationship between NLA and its alumni. We have successfully graduated generations of students who have filled many vital roles and professions throughout the nation. Long after obtaining their diplomas, our alumni continue to share friendship, support, and the NLA experience with their fellow graduates.

We want to share their stories and have recorded many on our website and one such story here in our Annual Report. What our alumni learn about “scholarship, leadership, and service” at New Life Academy has helped to prepare them for success and has helped them impact people for Christ both in college and later, in their chosen fields.
