Presidents Report from Natalie Jupe
Gday everyone,
What a huge board meeting we had last week thanks to everyone for sitting through and listening to two monthsworth of stuff I was just glad we had a quorum so we could get through it all. Once again thank you everyone!
Unfortunately due to the wet weather the Mental Health BBQ was postponed Doug will provide us with more detailsas to when it will be rescheduled.
It was just Roni and I for coffee and cake on Saturday morning, unfortunately Bill and Kristin had to pull out, but I didbump into Joan afterwards and had a quick chat with her. Once again, these Friendship beyond club functionsevents are purely social, and a good chance to have a catch up with members and friends in a social setting. It is sooften we get caught up in things at our meetings that we really do not get to know one another. Be sure to look out forour next event (Movies in November).
We are looking forward to Bethany coming along to help us make our origami peace cranes this weekdont forgetthe aim is for every Rotarian to make 3 cranes each, therefore our club need to make 33. These cranes will then betaken to the district conference.

Volunteers Required This October marks breast cancer awareness month with Pink Ribbon Day falling on Monday 22
October. Pink Ribbon Day aims to help raise awareness about breast cancer, as well as raise funds for
research, early prevention and patient support programs.
Between Thursday 18 October and Monday 22 October we have 25 merchandise stalls running at most
shopping centres accross the ACT and we desperatelyneed volunteers to help out with these stalls.Volunteering at stalls is easy - 2 stalls being held @ Riverside & Karabar
All you need to do is look after a table of our merchandise and serve customers who walk by. You won't be
by yourself - there are two people on each shift and each shift runs for two hours.
If you are able to help out we would love to hear from you!
Many thanks,

Volunteers for the 2012 AWD Junior Championships
The 2012 Athletics Australia Athletes with Disabilities
(AWD) Junior Championships will be held at the AIS
Track and Field facility in Bruce on 10-11 November. Our
club (ACT Junior Talent Squad for Athletes with a
Disability) has been asked to provide volunteers tosupport the event and its officials. Although some of the
volunteers will come from within our small club we would
appreciate assistance from members of your club to
ensure that there are enough volunteers for things to run
smoothly.
The Championships (for 12 to 19 year olds) run from 2-
5pm on Saturday 10 November and from 9.30am 12pm on
Sunday 11 November. Volunteers are given an Athletics
Australia T-Shirt and hat to wear and are provided with
meals and drinks. Athletics ACT will also be running its
regular Summer Series athletic event to cater for Open
athletes (those over 19 years old) during the weekend.
We need volunteers to undertake the following simple tasks:
Athlete Check-in/Call Room Assistants
Basket Handlers
Meal Assistants (2)
Scoreboard Operators (2) Medal Assistants (2)
Athlete Check-in Assistants need to be start at around mid-day on Saturday to check athletes into
their events and provide them with their number patches. This job will be busy for several hours on
Saturday and again for a short time Sunday morning. Call Room Assistants will be required to take
paperwork between the Call Room and the officials in the Commonwealth Room office in the Grand
Stand. Basket Handlers duties include providing baskets at start lines for athletes to put clothing
and personal items in and getting them back to athletes after their events. Meal Assistants will be
required to hand out pre-made rolls and drinks to officials and volunteers at lunch times and set out
salads etc and cook sausages for an evening BBQ. Scoreboard Operators will be stationed at field
events to put up scores cards on low boards for the officials. Medal Assistants will help officials
with medals at Medal Ceremonies. It would be great to get your help to ensure that the 2012 AWD
National Championships is a success and that young athletes with disabilities have support to reach
their sporting goals. Let me know by [email protected] phone 0408 714378 if you are
able to help.
Kind Regards,
Jenny PricePresident, ACT Junior Talent Squad for Athletes with a Disability

Using vocational service to build peacePosted onOctober 2, 2012By RI President Sakuji Tanakahttp://blog.rotary.org/2012/10/02/tanaka_vocservice/
In Japan, we place great importance on the value of work. Whatever we are called to do, we
should do it to the very best of our abilities, with dignity and with pride. Whether the job isrunning a country or shining shoes, there is honor in every vocation.
I grew up embracing this belief, but I had never stopped to contemplate it. One day, in mythird year in Rotary, we had a speaker at our club who talked about the purpose of ones
livelihood. He asked, why do we work hard? What is the importance of our work?
I had never thought about this before. I never saw it as a question. We work to earn money. We work to be successful. We work because it is required of us. To me, this was all.
On that day, I learned about the idea of vocational service. It was the idea that through ourwork, we can serve others. We think about others needs, and grow to care more for the
needs of our communities. We build positive connections between people, and a morepeaceful world.
This is the idea that has changed my life. It did not change how much I worked, or how hardI worked. But it changed why I worked, and how I experienced my life. It has made me see ahigher purpose in everything I do.
The idea of Service above Self is an idea that is unique to Rotary. But it is an idea that can beembraced by anyone. And I believe very much that in Rotary, and beyond Rotary, we canbuild Peace through Service.
Joke of the week
Q: What does Godzilla drive?
A: A monster truck!

Soldiers Club on Saturday 27 October. The ConferenceCommittee is trying to keep the conference reasonablycasual for the whole weekend and that would includethe dinners on both Friday and Saturday night. People
are encouraged to come dressed as they feelcomfortablereminding everyone that there is adress code for access to the Soldiers Club so no
bikinis, Speedos (thank heavens!) or thongs. Somewill wear beach themed gear while others will wear
