Spring Picnic – Older Americans Month CelebrationThe Shelby County Spring Senior Picnic at American Village on May 24 was a great success. Wayne Alexander’s Band entertained as well as Edwina Chappell, Ms. Senior Alabama 2008. The patriot presentations by the American Village re-enactors gave seniors a reminder of our heritage and sacrifices made in our history.

Yellow DotThe Shelby County Yellow Dot program has enrolled over 2000 Shelby County residents. Our goal is to enroll 10,000 residents.

Yellow Dot enrollment centers include: Chris Dorris State Farm

Remember, the first sixty minutes in an emergency, known as the “GOLDEN HOUR”,is critical and gives first responders vital information that may save your life.

AWARE – Aging Workers Are Reliable EmployeesAWARE is a career counseling program designed for clients age 50 or older. The program is sponsored through Positive Maturity, A United Way Partner. Resume writing, interview skills, computer training, and job placement are some of the services available to help senior adults compete in today’s job market.

Genice Mahand and Enoree Patterson are the Shelby County representatives in the program. They can be reached at 670-6750 or 669-3291. Call for a schedule of computer assistant classes.

RSVP BusIn order to clarify the use of the RSVP bus, a minimum of 6 passengers are needed to travel. Because of fuel and driver costs, less than 6 passengers make our trips very expensive. Most passenger cars can haul 5 people which is more economical. A minimum of 6 people is a must. Sorry for the inconvenience.

New FormsStation managers please find the new application form in the mailing. You may also find the new application on our website – www.shelbycountyrsvp.com Please use the new form when enrolling new volunteers.

Volunteer OpportunitiesYellow Dot Enrollment – seeking individuals who can help in the enrollment of Shelby County citizens in Yellow Dot program. We want to expand the program and increase the number of events.

Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging (M4A) – M4A is requesting two volunteers, once a month, to go into their own communities in Shelby County, and give a 15 minute or less presentation about various topics involving Medicare fraud. A written script will be furnished which gives suggested locations that are at the most susceptible for Medicare fraud. M4A would appreciate any help to end fraud against our seniors and those disabled receiving Medicare. Crystal Crim, M4A, will do the training with anyone interested in the program so that they are confident about speaking about Medicare fraud. M4A wants our volunteers to know that Medicare fraud is dangerous to any and all Americans and if we can do one presentation and alert even one senior to fraud, we can hopefully end this cycle of hurt.

Plant Project - The Plant Project Program is a Horticultural Therapy Program that is an intergenerational approach to helping children achieve, vocational, and life skills they need by pairing them with mentors over the age 65 and using planting activities and nationally recognized environmental education.
