Old School Traveller Keith Wright, of Queensland,Australia, really likes backpacking. He is about to set out on his 8th trip in

10 years and is planning a 2 month trip to Europe, where he intends to visit

Madrid, Vienna, Munich, and Paris. He will add a side trip to Britain to watch

his favourite Australian horse - Black Caviar - race at the Royal Ascot. So

with Australias renown for sending backpackers out into the world, whats

the big deal? Well, Wright is 95 years old only started travelling solo after

his wife Barbara passed way a decade ago. He sold his house so he could

start seeing the world, and when he ventures into foreign lands he stays

in youth hostels and cheap hotels. I have seen things that most touristshavent seen, because I walk the back streets and take trains or buses to

nearby towns for the day. He prefers travelling alone versus the packaged

bus tours more popular with most people his age. If you have 20 people on

a bus you get one bad apple, youre stuck with them for 20 days.

Robot Fish A team of American and Italian researchers saythey have succeeded in getting live sh to follow robotic ones through the

water. Engineer Maurizio Porri at the Polytechnic Institute of New York

University and his team tested their latest robot sh in a tank with live

zebrash. They painted the robot to look like a fertile female with stripes

and bright colours. The team is trying to control sh behavior in order to

protect them. We would like to use these robots for guiding sh away

from danger. Porri hopes his work will eventually be used to lead wild

sh away from oil spills, or to lure invasive species into a net so they can

be removed from sensitive habitats. While the sh were attracted to the

robot, they were just as attracted to other real sh. Porri admits this

leaves the door open to more research and development before the team

reaches its goals. We want to make sure rst that we do have an attraction

and that the sh are conditioned for the attraction.

Not So Kiddy Castle A German couple has spent the last37 years working on a special project in their backyard. In their spare time,

Heinz and Hidegard Schonewolf of Dudweiler, Germany, have built a 350

sqft fairy tale castle that is over 50 feet tall! Heinz, a 76 year old retired

bricklayer, put his tradesmans skills to the test to create the structure.

It is built out of stones, brick and thousands of bags of cement. He told a

German newspaper that the project started out as a retaining wall which

he kept adding to and rening over the years. The pair started work on it

in 1975, and did a little bit every day - even forgoing holidays. The only

trip they took was to see Heinzs mother in nearby Hessen. The couple

has opened their backyard to the public do not charge admission. They

estimate they have spent about $64,600 CAD so far, but say they will

continue working on the project for as long as they can.

Cloud Nine If youre on cloud nine, you must be pretty happy. Youre also

probably from North America, and grew up after 1957, because thats when this

term was rst printed in George P. Elliots book Among the Dangs. At least, thats

when it was rst printed as cloud nine. Various sorts of clouds were popping up

in American literature for a few decades prior to 1957, with 1937s The Underworld

Speaks by Albin Jay Pollock giving us the biggest clue to the origin of the phrase.

Pollock, in a section where he discusses the street slang of the time, denes cloud

eight as befuddled on account of drinking too much liquor. So cloud nine can
