What are the End-of-Course (EOC) tests? The EOC tests measure the knowledge and skills a student is expected to have mastered by the end of a specific high school course. The tests, recommended by the Louisiana High School Redesign Commission, are designed to ensure consistent and rigorous instruction for high school students across the state.

Who takes the EOC tests? All students enrolled for credit in any of the specified courses—regardless of their enrolled grade—are required to take the EOC test upon completing the course.

Are the EOC tests high stakes for my child?Yes. Freshmen entering high school in the 2010–2011 school year and thereafter must pass one EOC test in each of the following categories to meet the assessment requirement toward earning a standard high school diploma:

(a) Algebra I or Geometry, (b) English II or English III, and (c) Biology or US History.

Pass means a student scores Fair or above on an EOC test. Each year the District must provide 30 hours of remediation in the course content for each EOC test a student does not pass. For information about achievement levels for each test, consult the EOC Tests Interpretive Guide, available online at http://www.louisianaeoc.org/Documents/LDE-Interpretive-Guide.pdf.

Which tests must my child pass to meet the graduation requirement? If your child was a 9th grade student for the first time in the 2010–2011 school year or is currently a first-time 9th grade student, the EOC tests will be used to meet graduation requirements. If your child was repeating 9th grade or in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade during the 2010–2011 school year, the GEE tests will be used to meet graduation requirements.

First-time 9th graders in 2010–2011 who are eligible for LEAP Alternate Assessment, Level 2 (LAA 2) may use their EOC test results or LAA 2 grade 10 and 11 content area test results to meet graduation requirements. For specific information about your child’s testing requirements, contact the guidance counselor at your child’s school.

What type of test items are on the EOC tests and how are they administered? The EOC tests contain multiple-choice and constructed-response (short answer or essay) items. The tests are administered to students at their school using a secure online system. Students log in to the system with secure passwords. Although there are suggested time allowances, the tests are untimed.

What accommodations are available to students taking the EOC tests?Accommodations are available to qualifying students who are identified under IDEA, or Section 504, and/or limited English proficient (LEP). Large Print and Tests Read Aloud accommodations are provided through online accommodated forms. Braille test forms are also available. Other available accommodations include Assistive Technology, Communication Assistance, Individual/Small Group Administration, and Extended/Adjusted Time. For further information, please consult the EOC Assessment Guides, available at www.louisianaeoc.org under Instructional Resources.

How can students prepare for EOC testing?Rigorous classroom instruction based on the Grade-Level Expectations provides the best preparation. In addition, students can practice their skills using other Louisiana online assessment systems, such as PASS (Practice Assessment/Strengthen Skills) and EAGLE (Enhanced Assessment of Grade-Level Expectations).

For more information on these assessment systems, refer to the Louisiana PASS http://www.doe.state.la.us/lde/uploads/12956.pdf and EAGLE parent brochures http://www.doe.state.la.us/lde/uploads/14990.pdf.

What impact do the EOC tests have on my child’s course grades? For details about how the EOC test scores contribute to your child’s course grades, refer to your district’s grading policy.

When are the EOC tests administered, and which tests will be administered this year? The EOC tests are administered in December and May. Students take the appropriate EOC test at the end of the semester in which they complete any of the specified courses. In the 2011–2012 school year, the following tests will be administered:
