For some people, theidea of waking up at5 a.m. the day afterThanksgiving to bat-

tle mall crowds is about asappealing as Tofurkey. Butfor others, even in the ageof Cyber Monday and freeshipping, it’s all about thehunt.

“Every year we see an in-crease of people turning toonline shopping, but withBlack Friday you still getlots of crowds,” says AndreaWoroch, a consumer andmoney-saving expert for Ki-noli Inc. “There are peoplewho like to find those door-busting deals, and sureenough, there are still greatdeals to be had out there.”

That said, even Black Fri-day die-hards can learn a lit-tle from their tech-savvycounterparts. Here areWoroch’s top tips for shop-ping smart in the midst ofretail madness.

Have a plan“One of the most importantthings you can do is planahead and find out what the

deals are going to be acrossseveral different stores,”says Woroch. “Let’s saythere’s a huge discount on aTV at Target — call aheadand ask how many theyhave in stock. Map out aroute, or go to a mall wherethere are a variety ofstores.”

Hit the road earlyYou’ll want to set the alarmfor a disturbing hour notjust for the deals, but to en-sure a leisurely day. “It paysto be out there early be-cause the door-busters willbe limited in quantity. Theearlier you shop, the moretime you have to hit retail-ers and feel like you can getlunch. That’s important —you should also enjoy thecrazy holiday shoppingfrenzy.”

Take advantage of price-matching“Remember that big mer-chants like Sears, Home De-pot and Wal-Mart are reallybeefing up their price-matching guarantees.

They’ll meet or beat a com-petitor’s price. Have yoursmartphone with you todownload and present bar-codes that cashiers canprice-match while you’re atthe store.”

Load up on appsThere are a ton of apps outthere to help you shopsavvy. Woroch recom-mends Amazon’s free PriceCheck app — which allowsyou to scan barcodes and

compare them to in-storeprices — and Sale Saver, asupercalculator that com-putes the actual price of anitem after that additional20 percent off, sales taxand coupons. But the goldstandard is Coupon Sher-pa, which synchs withyour GPS to find paperlesscoupons, which cashierscan scan right off yourphone.

Only buy what you need“Retailers are already outthere offering deals,” saysWoroch. “They want to cre-ate a sense of urgency —but they’ll offer that 40 per-cent off again. Do your re-search, know how muchthings cost and take advan-tage of a deal only whenyou need it.”

hordes as a sleepy Thanksgiving zombie Money-saving expert Andrea Woroch on making the most of deals on Black Friday and beyond

Pro tip

If you know what storesyou’ll be shopping at in advance, visit Giftcardgranny.com, whereyou can buy gift cards at lessthan face value from sellerswho would rather have thecash. “You can save any-where from an additional 5percent to 35 percent,” saysWoroch.

Shop with your buds— yourearbudsHoliday carols through thespeakers at the mall? Bahhumbug! On Friday, makeyour own soundtrack androck out with this playlist.

‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,’ CultureThere’s nothing wrong withgetting into the spirit of theseason, but do it on your ownterms. Sometimes, your ownterms might mean this chillreggae version of a classic, soyou don’t feel like it’s some-thing you’ve already heard amillion times.

‘Oh No,’ Girl TalkThis mashup has thecolossal layering ofpersonalities thatthe shopping ex-perience offers.Plus it combinesBlack Sabbathpower chordswith Ludacris, say-ing “Move b—, getout-the way.”

‘Pretty BoySwag,’Soulja Boy Tell’emSpeaking of “get out-the way,” you might

want to make this one youranthem too, and say “prettyboy comin’ through.”

‘Bittersweet Symphony,’ The VerveEver see the video for thisone? Singer Richard Ashcroftis just walking through thecrowded street, banging intoeverybody else, totally oblivi-ous that they’re there becausehis song is so awesome. Thistune will make you be thatguy as you steamroll throughthe mall.

‘Albatross,’ Fleetwood MacYou’ll definitely need a fewzen moments with your head-phones as you brave this ag-gressive shopping climate. This wordless tune by an earlyincarnation of FleetwoodMac is a great start. If this in-strumental gives you that cru-cial inner peace, also tryR.E.M.’s “New Orleans Instru-mental,” and Yo La Tengo’s“Return to Hot Chicken.”
