brazil is experiencing a time of great vitality and prosperity. Thanks to the unique characteristics of

its economy, it was among the first countries worldwide to overcome the 2008-09 credit crunch.

Furthermore, Brazil will play host to two major sporting events—the 2014 World Cup and the

2016 Olympics—which are not only arousing interest in the country but are also creating many local business

opportunities and jobs, thus generating income for large segments of the population. It is with this vision for

a brighter future in mind that we proudly present the fourth edition of the IDEA/Brasil Award, a competition

that grows bigger with each passing year and has positioned itself as Brazil’s most important design awards.

IDEA/Brasil

a brIghter future

Organized by the Objeto Brasil Association in partner-ship with Apex-Brasil (the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency), Sebrae (the Brazilian Support Service to Micro and Small Businesses) and the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development (ABDI), the IDEA/Brasil Award gathers together projects from both small multinational companies that are designed by major offices and local design studios as well as a large amount of student work.

In 2011 the IDEA/Brasil jury granted awards to 87 proj-ects, which all stand as outstanding examples of Brazilian design. Despite the diversity of themes, some striking fea-tures of design produced in Brazil can be observed, such as the fun and playful aspects of projects from diverse areas, the freedom in the use of colors and the creative combination of natural materials, such as wood and rustic fabric; with advanced technology products, such as state-of-the-art plastic and cutting-edge equipment. Some of the winning projects used the forthcoming World Cup and the Olympics as a reference and sought to express the Brazilian culture through a more universal language that will be instantly familiar to the guests who will be visiting the country from various parts of the world.

Concern for sustainability took the lead among the winners of the IDEA 2011/Brasil Award, from the use of recycled and recyclable materials to the concern for

conserving natural resources translated into streamlined production processes and low energy consumption. This year’s winners also show that traditional brands have been using design in their renewal and expansion strategies into new markets in Brazil and abroad. Similarly, multinational companies are strengthening their local design teams and developing products geared exclusively to the domestic market, a recognition of the maturity of Brazilian design and consumers. The jury also identified projects that express the quest for new solutions in areas of the Brazilian industry in which design is not traditionally used, such as heavy-duty machinery and veterinary equipment, providing a competitive advantage to manufacturers in these sectors. Also noteworthy are the urban solutions, from furniture to transportation.

In this year’s edition, we had two new categories: ser-vice design and textiles, which was created as a channel of expression for one of the most dynamic sectors of the local economy. Both the textiles category and the existing jewelry category are exclusive to the IDEA/Brasil Award and help make this award an expression of the most advanced seg-ments in the Brazilian economy and of the good design pro-duced in the country. They are also a vehicle for promoting our products in the international market. Congratulations to all the winners of the IDEA 2011/Brasil Awards. n

A complete listing of all the IDEA/Brasil winners can be found on page 201.
